here is a fresh-water spring in Oak Creek Canyon near where I live. Last week I drove there with my empty 5-gallon water jugs in perferct 75 degree weather with the top down on my convertible. The sun warmed my skin and the wind blew my hair while I listened to my favorite music. It was awesome. Oak Creek Canyon is a visually unique part of the world. Hundreds of thousands of people visit this place every year because of an unforgettably beautiful steep terraine of red rock cliffs, tall, happy trees, well-kept hiking trails and of course a creek running through it all. Unfortunately, the lovely memory of my “water run morning” will have to suffice for awhile. The very next day, a wildfire started in Oak Creek Canyon. That was a week ago. At the point I am writing this, there are 14,000 acres burned and around 10% containment. Hundreds of people were asked to leave their homes in a volunteer evacuation and hundreds of structures are threatened. This news saddens the hearts of many in my community. It’s hard to comprehend that one day something beautiful exists, and the next day it has been scarred beyond recognition. When things like this happen, I am reminded of how grateful we must be for the beauty around us every day. Take it in. Put it in your memory banks so that you can recall it later and appreciate it over and over again. Lisa Petty, Editor Equal Opportunity Employment Journal

any industries are banding together to actively recruit and train returning military. Below is a look at some of the existing programs and opportunities available to veterans in sectors where military skills have proven to help individuals excel.

Manufacturing: Get Skills to Work

According to the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University, there are an estimated 600,000 advanced manufacturing jobs unfilled in the U.S. and more than 2.5 million industry jobs that will open up within the next five years. In response to the growing number of manufacturing jobs, GE, Manufacturing Institute, Alcoa Inc., Boeing and Lockheed Martin teamed up to launch the Get Skills to Work coalition that trains veterans for jobs in advanced manufacturing. The Get Skills to Work coalition focuses on: accelerated skills training for U.S. veterans; helping veterans and employers translate military skills to advanced manufacturing jobs; and empowering employers with tools to recruit and mentor veterans. Visit www.GetSkillstoWork.org for more information.

Technology: Veterans Technology Program

The Veterans Technology Program is a non-credit certificate program offered by the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. This no-cost program is available to both employed and unemployed, post-9/11 veterans with a minimum of a high school diploma, and is comprised of four certificates. The courses are delivered entirely online, enabling veterans to participate from any location and access their coursework at any time. The Veterans Technology Program is presently underwritten in its entirety by JPMorgan Chase & Co. Additional information regarding the application, including requirements, can be found at the Apply webpage.

Commercial Trucking Industry: Vocational Training using the G.I. Bill

Right now, the shortage for truck drivers is between 20,000 and 30,000 nationwide, according to the American Trucking Associations’ quarterly trucking activity report. The post-9/11 G.I. Bill now allows any veteran who has served in the military to obtain free truck driving training, allowing veterans the preparation they need to obtain a CDL license with no out-of-pocket costs. This financial assistance includes the cost of exam fees as well as housing, if necessary.

Franchise Opportunities

More than 400 franchisors belong to the International Franchise Association’s Veterans Transition Initiative – VetFran – and offer incentives to military veterans – often in the form of discounts on franchise fees. It is estimated that 75,000 spots are available for veterans and military spouses and another 5,000 for disabled vets by 2014. Visit www.vetfran.com for a complete list of participating franchises and for more information.

Guide to Federal Jobs

A

by Steve Ressler

pproximately once a month, I get an email from a family member or friend that goes something like “My cousin/neighbor/babysitter is really interested in federal jobs. S/he can’t figure out the process. Can you give her some inside guidance?” Whether OPM wants to admit it or not, the process is still way too confusing for outsiders. They don’t know what job series they qualify for, can’t figure out what grade they could qualify as, and sure don’t understand KSAs. Most of the job application advice is written in bureaucratic-speak or so vague that it is not really helpful. I’ve written these job searchers dozens of emails (and phone calls) with my advice. Rather than repeat myself, I thought I would publish my guide in one place and offer it to all individuals looking for a federal job. I’d love to hear your comments and I’ll continue to revise the piece to provide the most comprehensive “Unofficial Guide to Landing a Federal Job”

1) Start with USAJOBS.gov

You’ve probably been here but almost all government jobs are posted here. The trick is learning to navigate the system and its filters to find the job you want. There are too many jobs there so you need to do a good job filtering to find the jobs you want. (A) Job Series - First, you have to find what job series you qualify for. If you are an engineer, you shouldn’t be applying for jobs as an auditor. Use series search and browse through all the occupatinal series to find the ones you are most interested in. If you are a generalist, you probably want to search for Management and Program Analyst positions (343) as it is a large category. Other key series are 2210 (IT Specialist), 511 (Auditor), 1811 (Criminal Investigator), and 1102 (Contract Specialist). One good way to find what you qualify for is USAJOBS list of job series by college major. (B) Grade Series - Second, you have to figure out what grade you qualify for. Federal grades range from 1 to 15 (highest) with a special series for senior executives. Read the specifics of each job announcement but here’s some general guidance on what grades to apply for. Entry-level college graduates should apply for GS-5 or GS-7 (if you have If you are a geographically restricted, over a 3.0 GPA). Recent master’s graduates should apply for GS-9 positions. PhDs and make sure you refine your job search by Lawyers should apply for GS-11s. If you are coming to the government with experience, it is difficult to gauge what specific grade you would come in at. city. Make sure you include the names (C) Promotion Potential - Make sure to pay attention to the promotion potential for the job. It should say in the job announcement and the higher the promotion potential of surrounding towns and cities. For the higher your potential salary can be in the future. For example, in a GS-9 job with a example, when searching for jobs in the promotion potential of GS-13, you can move from making $45,000/yr to $80,000/yr in Tampa/St. Petersburg area, don’t forget three years if you perform well. (D) City Search - If you are a geographically restricted, make sure you refine your to include the city Bay Pines which is job search by city. Make sure you include the names of surrounding towns and cities. nearby and had a ton of federal jobs. For example, when I was searching for jobs in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area, I forget to include the city Bay Pines which is nearby and had a ton of federal jobs. (E) Agency search - It is helpful if you have any ideas on specific agencies or work you want to do. The gov’t is big (2.8 million employees) so obviously there is variation and thre may be a better fit based on your interests - environment, homeland security, foreign affiars, etc. If you are pretty flexible, that is good as well as some agencies are harder to get into (such as Department of State, EPA) and The City of Tempe is a diverse and exciting city to police. you may find other agencies just as rewarding. The Tempe Police Department protects an ever-growing www.tempe.gov/policejobs (F) Write Good KSAs - I’ve written a whole community of over 160,000 residents and is home to Arizona State University, the Mill Avenue District, spring post here about writing good KSAs. weeks to 4 months. There can be a variety of factors affecting this ranging from ineffecient HR processes to competing priorities and budget freezes. While I used to complain about this time lag and black hole, I applied for a number of private sector jobs approximately a year ago and I have to say it wasn’t much better and had just as much variety. One consulting firm put me through about 8 interviews over a 4 month period before pulling the job due to funding issues. And there were many more similar stories. (I) Learn How to Read USAJOBS - There’s a real art to reading USAJOBS announcements. By law, agencies must post their opportunities on USAJOBS even if they really have an inside candidate they want to hire. A couple tips....make sure the job is even opening to outside candidates. It should say on the job posting whether it is open to all citizens, only current feds, or only employees at that current agency. Additionally, check to see the number of positions they are hiring for. Generally, I do not like to apply for a job unless they have multiple vacancies. If they only have one opening, they may have an inside candidate. This changes a little as you get to the higher grades but is still somewhat true. Additionally, look how long the job is open for. If it is too short (7 days), they normally have an inside candidate. If it is continuous and open, I find they are often black holes and may not be even hiring, just collecting resumes. I personally prefer 2 to 4 week openings. A dream opening for me would be multiple positions and open 3 weeks.

2) Entry-Level Leadership Programs

There are a number of good sites to look at outside of USAJOBS. One of the best opportunities are the 2-year entry-level leadership development programs created by federal agencies.

The gov’t is big (2.8 million employees) so obviously there is variation and there may be a better fit based on your interests - environment, homeland security, foreign affairs, etc. If you are pretty flexible, that is good as well as some agencies are harder to get into (such as Department of State, EPA) and you may find other agencies just as rewarding. The Presidential Management Fellows program is the most well-known and is for recent graduates with advanced degrees to work at a range of federal agencies. If you’re interested in learning more about the PMF application process, check out PathtoPMF.com, featuring resources and advice on each part of the application process. Many agencies have also started their own programs either based on agency or career field. I’ve listed a number of them at GovLoop.com under Resources/Recruitment Programs. These programs often start recruiting in fall/winter for individuals to start after graduation in May so they may not be a good fit if you missed their application dates.

3) Networking is Key

The truth with any job search is networking is important. Contact any federal employees you know whether through neighbors, alumni associations, previous co-workers, etc. Take them out for a cup of coffee for

By law, these individuals can’t directly give you a job but they can let you know about opportunities and guide you through the process. A key part of networking is joining groups that help your case. JoinGovLoop.com, a social network for govies, and look for openings and reach out to relevant members for their guidance.

Widespread Efforts Promote Manufacturing AsViable Career Choice

T

here is a burgeoning movement to motivate students in America to consider careers in the unlikeliest of places – the factory floor. Even in the face of job cuts amid the current economic turbulence, U.S. manufacturers have great concern about the growing shortage of young skilled labor needed to make products used in industries ranging from aerospace and medical devices to alternative energy and infrastructure improvements, according to industry experts. Those heralding the cause include leading trade associations, regional economic development groups, TV personalities such as Jay Leno and John Ratzenberger, and even a teenage race car driver. “Although there have been significant job losses in certain industries and regions, many areas of the country are clamoring for skilled employees,” said Mark Tomlinson, executive director and general manager for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. “In Texas, the oil and gas industry has created a thriving manufacturing community. Parts of the Southeast have seen tremendous growth in several segments.” A recent poll conducted by sponsors of the FABTECH International & AWS Welding Show revealed executives cited the lack of employee skills as a leading obstacle to growth. “That supports what we’ve heard for a couple of years from leaders in the metalforming, fabricating and welding industries. They report their biggest challenge today is finding skilled workers, especially young people, who have the knowledge to handle the increasingly sophisticated tasks required in manufacturing,” said Jerry Shankel, president and CEO of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association

International (FMA). “For example, we are using laser light to cut metal now, and it requires a person proficient in math and science skills.” The outreach to students and educators is taking two parallel tracks in response to the challenge. One dispels the negative image many have of factories as dark, dingy and dangerous, and such work as unfulfilling. The second highlights the chance to use fun, high-tech, computer skills and the opportunity to secure a career that pays well and offers advancement. “Part of the problem is the media and Hollywood, who often portray manufacturing in a poor light, denigrating anyone who works with their hands,” said actor John Ratzenberger, star of the comedy “Cheers,” host of the factory-focused Travel Channel show “John Ratzenberger’s Made in America” and founder of the Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs Foundation (NBT) that encourages young people to consider careers in manufacturing.

A report from the U.S. Department of Labor also noted, “Popular perceptions of manufacturing jobs as dark, dangerous and dirty are largely outdated as advanced robotics and other ‘intelligent’ systems become pervasive throughout the manufacturing process.” “The manufacturing community must do a better job informing children that working in a factory is rewarding both personally and financially,” said Ratzenbeger. “It all

starts with getting young people to take pride in tinkering and inspiring them to work with both their hands and their minds.” Many agree with Ratzenberger. “The image of manufacturing is still very much misunderstood; people, particularly young people, believe that we have the manufacturing plants of the 1950s and ’60s,” Dr. G. Edward Hughes, president and CEO of Gateway Community and Technical College in Edgewood, Ky., recently said in a Cincinnati newspaper interview. A report from the U.S. Department of Labor also noted, “Popular perceptions of manufacturing jobs as dark, dangerous and dirty are largely outdated as advanced robotics and other ‘intelligent’ systems become pervasive throughout the manufacturing process.”

Combating this image and shining a spotlight on the career opportunities in manufacturing now represent missions of more and more organizations, whether these are grassroots or national efforts. Here are just a few of the hundreds of initiatives taking place across America: The Cleveland-based Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network sponsors videos shown in seven Ohio high schools that illustrate why manufacturing is a good career choice. A recent program on welding even featured Jay Leno, who extolled the virtues of the welders who restore his prized autos. Two business groups in Manitowoc County, Wis., sponsor “Project MiniChopper” that showcases career opportunities by giving students real-life experiences with manufacturing. Student groups actually build motorcycles as school projects. Ratzenberger’s NBT offers more reallife manufacturing experiences by issuing grants to educational and not-for-profit institutions that conduct summer manufacturing camps for kids with courses that focus on designing and building things. “The camps give the kids a tangible experience to make something they can be proud of and take home,” said Ratzenberger. “I can think of no enterprise more worthy than one devoted to inspiring the next generation of engineers, builders and manufacturers.” The Oklahoma State UniversityOkmulgee MidAmerica Industrial Park in Pryor, Okla., conducts a two-day program called, “All About Manufacturing,” that targets K-12 educators and teaches them about manufacturing as a career choice – knowledge they can pass on to their students. FMA is now in its second year of featuring Florida teenage race car driver and welder Brennan Palmiter in efforts to reach young people. Initiatives include the “GO Brennan” scholarship program in which students apply by posting videos on YouTube, and a “Be True to Your School” program tied to FMA magazine Practical

Welding today that has Palmiter visiting schools accompanied by his race car, to talk about welding, racing and manufacturing. “It’s important that people my age realize there are opportunities in the manufacturing field for them to pursue,” Palmiter said. “If parents and teachers don’t have personal experience in today’s manufacturing, they can’t guide their children with accurate opinions and information about manufacturing careers,” said Pat Lee, FMA public relations director and a member of the Rockford, Ill., Chamber of Commerce Manufacturers Council. “That’s why our council compiled a Web resource on manufacturing careers and provided it to the local high school district. The district then created a Web page on its site that is visited regularly by both students and parents.” FMA’s Shankel sees this movement is starting to change the nation’s mind-set on manufacturing. “So many organizations now are committed to make this happen and we’re beginning to see results,” he said. “Applications for our scholarships have reached record levels. Educators are paying attention. And, young people are flocking to manufacturing camps. Positioning industrial jobs as desirable and rewarding will fulfill specific needs of manufacturers and, without question, strengthen our economy.” Based in Rockford, Ill., Fabricators & Manufacturers Association International is a professional organization with more than 2,300 members working together to improve the metalforming and fabricating industry through technology councils, educational programs, networking events and the FABTECH International & AWS Welding Show. FMA also has a technology affiliate, the Tube & Pipe Association, International (TPA), which focuses on the unique needs of companies engaged in tube and pipe producing and fabricating. Sexuality in the Workplace: The Dilemma Continues by Lenora Billings-Harris, CSP

B

usinesses who embark upon launching diversity initiatives often struggle with the issue of sexual orientation in the workplace. Frequently leadership itself has no acceptable response to the above comment, which is made by many employees. Neither the government nor businesses expect workers to change their beliefs or values as it relates to sexual orientation or any other difference among people at work. However, it is expected that all employees will be held accountable for their own behavior. When GLBT * (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered) jokes, gestures, and rumors are tolerated at work, it creates an environment that negatively affects productivity even if there are no GLBT’s present. Such behavior can also be offensive to heterosexuals who are not biased in this way, and many workers who have friends and relatives who are other than heterosexual.

Each time people say something inappropriate they run the risk of making the company liable. One of my clients learned first hand what this means. Luckily they responded appropriately in the eyes of the EEOC, thus avoiding an extensive investigation and negative press. A new employee had been hired. Soon thereafter, a peer worker started a rumor about the “new guy.” Several people heard the rumor about his perceived sexuality, including the new employee. He filed a claim with the EEOC, charging the company of tolerating a “hostile environment.” I had begun diversity awareness training for all employees and managers several months before this claim, and had instructed management on how to handle such situations. They made it clear to everyone that such behavior would not be tolerated, and repeated inappropriate behavior would be grounds for termination. Because the company was able to prove

July 2014 they were in the process of delivering diversity awareness training to everyone, and they had documented who they had spoken to and what was said to the offending employees, the EEOC dropped the claim. The bottom line is this. Whether an employee is GLBT or straight she or he has the right to earn a living in a non-hostile environment. The more heterosexuals are able to recognize the double standard imposed on people who are other than heterosexual, the sooner those standards can be removed and everyone can focus on getting the job done. The government is an excellent example of what not to do, in its efforts to treat people fairly. It says, “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” If you are straight, imagine how much energy it would take to work for eight or more hours a day when you are compelled to hide your sexuality. That is what this rule requires. As busy as everyone is at work, people do not sit around talking about their social life, however the subject does come up occasionally. Think about what you would say when someone asks, “So what did you do for Memorial Day?” If you had to live by the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” rule, you would not be able to refer to your loved one as your wife, husband, boyfriend, or girlfriend. You might feel compelled to avoid answering the question, or lie. Neither are good alternatives when talking to people with whom you need to develop a trusting work relationship. People fear that which they do not understand. This ignorance leads to the perpetuation of irrational beliefs and stereotyping. During my seminars, often individuals say that they are afraid that a gay person will try to “pick them up,” or that all GLBT’s want to do is talk about sex. GLBT’s do not think about sex any more often than straight people do. “Hitting on” someone at work is inappropriate behavior, and management would be expected to take appropriate actions whether the offender was GLBT or straight. If GLBT people were interested in other GLBT people, why would they waste their time trying to develop a romantic relationship with someone who is straight? Fears are often illogical. Many people use their religion as the reason to be bigoted toward those who are different. I am not an authority on religion, so let’s just examine logic again. Most if not all religions teach some version of the “Golden Rule.” Most if not all teach some variation of “Love thy neighbor.” If one excepts this as a

equal opportunity employment journal value to be practiced, how than can harassing, beating, and discriminating against a person solely based on sexual orientation be tolerated and condoned? Regardless of religious beliefs, the reality is that GLBT’s are in the workplace and in the marketplace. Each time prejudice is tolerated the business runs the risk of litigation, lost business, and a lost opportunity to attract and retain the best talent for the job, regardless of sexual orientation. The following suggestions and resources may help you and your work colleagues learn more about this issue. By developing a deeper understanding of people who are different you will become better equipped to say the right thing at the right time to stop the perpetuation of biased and prejudiced behavior. Make a commitment to do at least one of the following: Write down the reasons your • think you are or would be uncomfortable working with a person whose sexuality is different from yours. • Talk to your religious or spiritual leader about this issue. Be willing to seek clarity regarding contradictions you perceive about behavior and your faith’s teachings. • Have the courage to talk to someone whose sexuality is different than your own. Inform the person that you want to learn and understand. Ask for permission to ask her or him a few questions. (Remember that the answers represent that person, not everyone in the group.) • If your company has a support group for people who are other than heterosexual, attend a meeting. • Visit “chat rooms” on the Internet, and ask questions about your fears and beliefs. • Whenever you find yourself wondering what a person’s sexual orientation is, ask yourself what difference does it make as it relates to your interactions with them or with getting the job done. When fears are confronted, they become much less of a threat. You will probably find that GLBT people are just people who have a different sexual orientation than your own. Otherwise they are just like everyone else. Careers in The Growing Field Of Information Technology Services

omputers and information technology (IT) touch nearly every aspect of modern life. Information technology can help with such diverse tasks as driving motor vehicles and diagnosing diseases. IT enables seamless integration and communication between businesses anywhere in the world. To keep IT systems running, a large workforce is needed to maintain networks, create new software, and ensure information security. In addition, the proliferation of smart phones has given rise to a new “app economy,” in which new employment opportunities are available for workers who create the programs that run on mobile devices. Unlike many other sectors of the economy, employment in the computer systems design and related services industry (commonly known as IT services) was not significantly affected by the recession of 2007–2009. The industry lost about 1 percent of its employment in 2009 but regained momentum in 2010, when it surpassed the employment numbers from 2008. The high demand for the services provided by this industry has created a large number of fast-growing and high-paying IT jobs.

6 Steps To A Killer Cover Letter

M

by Colleen McMahon

ost job hunters hate writing cover letters, and it shows. They write ho-hum cookie-cutter letters and simply plug in the company name: “I am excited about the possibility of working at (your company here).” Bored writing it? You can bet whoever reads it will be just as bored. Some candidates even make the mistake of skipping the cover letter completely and just sending a resume. By forgoing the cover letter or settling for a boring regurgitation of the information already on your resume, you miss out on a big opportunity! Your cover letter is a chance to personalize your pitch to a potential employer. A skillful cover letter gets the recipient genuinely excited to turn the page and look at your resume. If the gatekeeper reading your letter likes it, he or she scans your resume looking for reasons to keep you in the hiring pool, not screen you out. So how do you write that letter, individualize it for the companies you target, and grab their attention? Follow these six steps:

THE POWER OF

Y

Page 17

by Michel Neray

ou probably already know that positive people are more fun to be around; that it doesn’t feel good when people say ‘no’ to you; and, that being open-minded is generally better than being critical or close-minded. But what you may not know is just how overwhelming the evidence is a ‘yes’ mentality can help you in almost every aspect of your life and business. In the 2008 movie, ‘Yes Man’, Jim Carrey’s character totally transforms his life (mostly for the better; always for the laugh) by saying ‘yes’ to any and all offers and requests. If you saw the movie, you might have found it funny – according to the film review site, Rotten Tomatoes, many people didn’t – but either way, it probably didn’t convince you to say ‘yes’ more. The original book by Danny Wallace, however, provided a much more compelling and realistic argument. But I digress. Let’s take a look at the overwhelming evidence I referred to earlier.

Say ‘Yes’ To Creative Thinking And Better Brainstorming.

Although different creativity experts may have different specific processes to facilitate innovation and brainstorming, all agree that a key element involves ‘divergent thinking’. According to Wikipedia, ‘Divergent thinking is a thought process or method used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions.’ Divergent thinking requires suspension of judgment. In other words, just say ‘yes’ to every idea that comes up. Tim Hurson, author of Think Better, says that “‘no’ kills ideas before they have a chance to breathe. The secret of creative thinking is let ideas live long enough to make them better.” Someone with a ‘no’ mindset will tell you why an idea can’t be implemented. Someone with a ‘yes’ mindset will come up with a way for how it can be done. That’s when innovation happens.

Say ‘Yes’ To Higher Sales And More Persuasive Conversations.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of how people communicate, think and change behavior at both the conscious and subconscious levels. For this reason, it is used in sales training as well as by some psychotherapists and life coaches. In NLP, we learn that the quickest way to get someone to say ‘yes’ is to say ‘yes’ first. Linda Ferguson, Master NLP Trainer and founder of one of the largest NLP training companies in the country, explains it this way. “Our natural programming as human beings is to match the communication of people we want to understand. People who hear us say ‘yes’ are naturally conditioned to say ‘yes’ back to us.” This is absolutely consistent with the law of reciprocation described in Robert Cialdini’s book, Influence. If this sounds obvious, I should add that when I am taking participants through the Sales Telepathy workshop, I get a lot of eyebrows raised when I focus as much as I do on the first step of the process: identifying all the things you genuinely believe the prospect is doing right! After all, salespeople and marketers know that the value they add is directly related to the gaps and challenges that their prospects – so why focus on what they are doing right? Because it demonstrates you honor and respect your prospect, and it improves the likelihood that they will honor and respect what you have to offer. In my years as an Account Executive in advertising agencies, I credit the

Someone with a ‘no’ mindset will tell you why an idea can’t be implemented. Someone with a ‘yes’ mindset will come up with a way for how it can be done. That’s when innovation happens.

You may think you say ‘Yes’ all the time. In fact, you may think you say ‘Yes’ too often! And maybe you do. But in my experience, many people say ‘Yes’ even though they are thinking ‘No’. Are You Ready To Say ‘Yes’ To This Challenge?

Do you really have a ‘yes’ mindset? You may think you say ‘Yes’ all the time. In fact, you may think you say ‘Yes’ too often! And maybe you do. But in my experience, many people say ‘Yes’ even though they are thinking ‘No’. ‘No’ may be the automatic first response because it was one of the first words we heard (repeatedly) as babies. Or maybe we tend to say ‘no’ out of fear of change or fear of the unknown or simply out of habit. Whatever the reason, it’s time to take yourself off auto-pilot and become consciously aware of your responses. Here’s the challenge: Walk around with a little notepad or scorecard. Each time you hear the little voice in the back of your head saying ‘Yes’, mark it down on. Each time it says ‘No’, make a note of that too. No one has to see your score but yourself. Try it for one day. Go on, I dare you. Say ‘Yes.” Michel Neray, MBA, B.Sc, Certified NLP Practitioner, helps his clients discover, communicate and focus on their greatest value and true competitive advantage — for massive increases in sales, leadership effectiveness and happiness! Three Big NO-NOs of Networking That Almost Everyone Makes…(even you!)

N

etworking puts you in front of several people who you can meet in a casual environment and talk about what you do. If you hit on someone who needs what you have, bingo! You’ve got a chance to get a new client. That’s the theory, anyway. The fact is that while most people see the value of networking events—and continue to go in massive numbers—few people know how to use networking events effectively. Now don’t worry, I’m not going to re-hash the same networking bumpf you read about all the time. No, I’m going to assume you already know all that stuff. But I bet you still make at least one of the mistakes I talk about in this article, and maybe all three. Don’t believe me? Read on and rate yourself!

NO-NO #1: Do You Toss Your Business Cards Around The Table As If They Were A Deck Of Cards?

You must have seen this a hundred times: you go to a lunch or dinner networking event, and as people sit down at your table, they pass their business cards around as if they were dealing a deck of playing cards. Admit it. You’ve done the same thing yourself. Unfortunately, every time you toss your business cards around, it gives people the impression that you don’t think much of your own business. Even worse, people perceive you as being only interested in pushing your product or service on them. No thanks. Next time you go to a networking event, hold onto your business cards and say this: “You might have noticed I didn’t pass around my business cards. Let me tell you a bit about what I do first. Then, if you think there’s a fit with what you do, I’d be more than happy to give you my card. And I’ll do the same for you—I’ll ask for your card if I think I could use your service or if I think I can refer some business to you.” Now, after that little intro, you had better make a sincere effort to help those people sitting around the table. After all, that’s what you just asked them to do for you.

NO-NO #2: Are You Genuinely Interested In The Other People?

At a networking event that I was facilitating, I asked everyone to raise their hand if they were there with the intention of selling a product or service, or looking for a job. Almost everyone raised their hand. Then I asked them to raise their hand if they came looking for a supplier or vendor. One woman raised her hand. If everyone goes to a networking event only to sell, nobody sells anything. But, if everyone goes to a networking event open to what other people can offer, then everyone has the opportunity to sell. Here’s how that translates to the individual level. At another networking event, after most people had streamed out I was talking to one of the organizers of the event. One of the other participants – who was obviously in a rush to leave – brushed past me, shook hands with the person I was talking to and said goodbye to him. He then looked at me, shoved his business card in my face, and then continued out the door.

by Michel Neray

Now contrast that to another experience I had last week. I walked up and started talking to someone I didn’t know. After about 15 minutes into a really interesting conversation, she said, “You know Michel, this is the most I’ve told anyone all evening about what I do.” In Andrea Nierenberg’s very excellent book, ‘Nonstop Networking’, she lists seven ‘getting to know you questions’ that she recommends you start with before you launch into whatever it is you have in mind. There are a lot of different ways to build your business – the best way is to be genuinely interested in what other people offer.

NO-NO #3: Do You Always Deliver The Same Elevator Pitch And Expect A Different Response?

It constantly amazes me when I hear people introduce themselves the same way over and over again. It’s as if they memorized and practiced their elevator pitch and by God they’re going to stick to it. No, no, no, no and no. By now it should be clear that A) elevator pitches don’t work anyway (because

they’re static, contrived and inflexible), and B) the most valuable thing you can take away from a networking event is not a bunch of business cards, but rather all the research you could be accumulating on your Essential Message. Think of a networking event as a giant focus group that you could use to figure out what resonates most with people about your business and what the true core value is you offer. As you work the room, try emphasizing different aspects of your business. Ask a lot of questions about the kind of service the person you are speaking to would like to receive. And most importantly, pay special attention to the reactions you get. If you truly listen, you might be surprised by what people find most interesting about your business. That’s why, even if you have an extensive personal network and you have no need to expand it further, I always recommend that people go to networking events. In fact, these three no-no’s of networking are just a few of all the mistakes that people make at networking events. How many have you seen at the events you’ve attended? If you know a common networking blunder that I haven’t included in this article, let me know! The Power of Social Media To Establish Small Businesses

Th

e technological revolution that is taking place right now has created a complete paradigmatic shift in the marketing world. Although the name of the game is still customer engagement, the manner in which this engagement takes place has completed shifted. The advancement of communications technology such as smartphones and tablets, in conjunction with the expanse and reach of the web, has produced the perfect storm for effective customer engagement. This means that small businesses will be able effectively establish their brand while building consistent and relevant exposure to their customer base and target audience. It is hard to believe, but there are still some holdouts among small business owners. Change is not always easily embraced. Unfortunately, for those business owners who have not yet engaged the multitudinous opportunities presented by social media, they will be playing catchup in a highly competitive economy. Although this may be true, the old adage “better late than never” definitely applies here. There are number of benefits that’s make the use of social media platforms a must for small businesses.

field between you and your competitors. Depending on how well you adapt and how effective you are, you could even secure a competitive edge by mastering the social media tango. As a small business owner, it is imperative that you engage your customers on consistent level -- providing relevant and meaningful content. Customer engagement is the only way to build a trusting relationship with your customer base. It is this relationship of trust that helps to develop customer loyalty and that is what sustains businesses during those lean times.

Your Customers are Already Using It

Unlike some other engagement tools, such as opt-in lists, your customer base is already on social media and highly active. According to a recent report, Americans spend more than 25 percent of their online time visiting social media “Americans spend more than 25% of their sites. This is huge for a business that is online time visiting social media sites. This attempting to connect with their target is huge for businesses that are attempting audience. What make this even more beneficial to connect with a target audience.” is that these social media platforms have already trained your customer how to interact and respond. People on social media platforms have been condiLevels the Playing Field in a Competitive Market The volatility that has been experienced in the global economy as trick- tioned to respond and they are rarely annoyed by being engaged. It is important that you understand that this is not the platform for you individuals, but business 101 dictates that competition drives the market in a thriving economy. way that you can alienate them. Instead of hitting them with a promotional blitz, engage them with relevant content that they will find useful. Don’t make every encounter about the sale. Get them used to coming to your page in order to receive helpful tips, resources or reports that will provide value to the relationship that you are building with them. The business rationale here is actually quite simple. If you want to effectively reach your target audience, you need to reach them where they are. Instead of attempting to lure your audience to a landing page or website, you can meet them right where they are. This also provides a certain level of convenience for your customer. You want your customer’s user experience to be pleasurable and worthy of repeating.

Increased Connectivity

Social media platforms were designed for high connectivity, so it reduces the amount of work that you will have to do when attempting to reach out to your target audience. The type of connectivity that is experienced through social media is quite unique from traditional marketing channels. Whether you are using television, radio or emailed newsletters, the connectivity does not compare to that of social media. The primary reason is that all of those channels are one way in nature. You send a message to them and they interpret the message. Social media allows them to respond to the message with a direct comment, which in turn allows you to respond. Dialogue is powerful, no matter what level it is on. The power of conversation allows you to

Page 23

build an entire community of fans who see you as more than a business entity. They will begin to see you as someone they can trust. Trust is vital in today’s economy. It is not the best deal or the most convenient transaction that drives the sale. It is customer trust. Consumers will not spend their money with companies they do not trust. Social Media provides the opportunity to easily build the trust necessary to win over consumers.

Cost Effective

Although some paid advertising on social media is necessary to maximize your position and exposure, you can actually establish a pretty strong following without investing any upfront capital. This makes social media marketing one of the least costly methods of building your company brand and engaging your customer base. If you are like most small business owners who don’t have the budget for flashy advertising campaigns, social media is definitely an option. Honestly, it is more than an option, it should be viewed as a requirement. The truth is that there is a good chance that your competition is using social media and you cannot afford to fall behind the curve when the competition is so steep. By taking the time to develop a social media presence you will be able to put your company in a position that is conducive for growth. You will be able to develop and establish your company brand for fractions of the cost of using traditional channels. Article provided by the ConstantContent.com

5 Ways To Balance Your Career And Personal Life by Libby James

If you plan a fun activity with your kids, a night out with your friends, or a date with your spouse, you will have something enjoyable to look forward to while you’re at work. Things You Should Never Do in A Job Interview

seems obvious, at least to most people, that there are certain things you should do before a job interview, things such as learning a bit about the company, ironing your shirt, and leaving early--with time to spare for any emergencies or roadblocks that come up. What about once you are actually in there, sitting in the chair across from someone who holds your professional fate in her or his hands? When you are in that all-important applicant’s seat, hoping for employment, don’t do these five things.

people who wrote to her for advice when they were involved with married partners but felt sure the cheaters were only cheating on the current spouses and would never cheat in the new relationships: there is no better predictor of future behavior than current behavior. Furthermore, you should be trying to impress your interviewer by showing how gracefully and maturely you have handled difficult situations, and if you sound bitter, you risk sounding like you haven’t actually overcome the obstacle so much as you have let it fester.

4. Use a lot of slang

Nothing says “unprofessional” like a sentence filled with language that is either too cute or too vulgar. Avoid slang, including very informal words, vulgarities, and “substitute” curse words (such as “b.s.” and “freaking”). Part of being in the real world is recognizing how to talk with adults in business situations. “You guys, that would totally suck if we got screwed over by your lame competitor” doesn’t cut it. Yes, you should let your personality come through, just not the parts of your personality that enjoy swearing and misusing the word “literally.” It doesn’t matter if you think voices in the media are becoming more casual in the internet age. In a professional setting, be professional-especially when you are trying to land a job!

1. Look at your mobile phone

There may not be anything less professional than taking out your cell phone during a job interview. You might think it’s no big deal to glance at an incoming message received, but the messages sent when you check your phone include: “I’m paying attention to something besides the interviewer (who could be my boss),” “I can’t focus on the task at hand,” “I’m not able to patiently control myself,” and “I think what I want to do this instant is more important than my longer-term goal.” These are not the messages you want to get across when job seeking.

Occupational Therapy: An occupational therapist is a health-care professional responsible for a patient’s rehabilitation into his or her living and working environment. Like physical therapists, they help patients to manipulate their bodies, prosthetics, and even medical technology in a way that promotes healing and mobility. Pharmacy Technician: Pharmacy techs are typically trained on-the-job, although there are certification options that substantially increase the chances of being hired. Most of the work is offered through retail pharmacies and store chains, and typically includes round-the-clock shift options. The job entails helping pharmacists to dispense medication and other health-related products to customers; administrative tasks and routine store stocking and operations are also fairly common. Phlebotomist: Phlebotomists are typically trained either on-the-job or through a certification program. They work in hospitals, blood donation centers, or laboratories collecting blood and other bodily fluids. Physician Assisting: Physician assistants are medical practitioners whose training and duties lie somewhere between that of a doctor and that of a medical assistant. Respiratory Therapist: Trained medical professionals who work with the respiratory and cardiopulmonary systems of the body. The responsibilities of a respiratory therapist vary depending on where employment is located and what the job category is. In most cases, there are three job levels: respiratory therapists, respiratory therapy technicians, and respiratory care practitioners.

Where is the Current Market Growth?

Although all health care jobs are in growing demand for educated workers, some of them are expected to grow at a faster rate than others. This can have a big impact on which career path you choose to take, since higher demand typically means easier job placement and higher wages (especially since wages in the health care industry are expected to increase 22 percent through 2016, compared to only 11 percent for all other industries). Overall, jobs in hospitals are the slowest-growing category (at a still high number of 13 percent more jobs over the next eight years). Jobs in home health are the fastest-growing at a whopping 55 percent. Nursing aides, orderlies, nursing attendants, and home health aides will provide the most new jobs. Registered nurses and dental assistants come in at a close second. Some of the additional growth numbers through 2016 include: • Home Health Aides: 49 percent • Medical Assistants: 35 percent • Physical Therapist Assistants: 32 percent • Physician Assistants: 27 percent

Millions of Jobs Now And in The Future by Elka Torpey

In

career news, healthcare is everywhere. That’s because the healthcare industry is projected to add more jobs—over 4 million— than any other industry between 2012 and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). And it is projected to be among the fastest-growing industries in the economy. “Without a doubt, there’s a lot of opportunity in healthcare,” says Stephanie Drake, former executive director of the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration in Chicago, Illinois. But which areas of work are expected to have the best outlook? What are the occupations, and what do they pay? And how do you prepare for them? This article answers those questions. The first section describes the industry and how it’s growing. The second section discusses the occupations in healthcare. And the third section explains how to get started in these occupations. Sources for more information are at the end.

A Growing Industry

The healthcare industry provides services related to treating illness, maintaining wellness, and managing disease. For workers in healthcare, helping people is the core of their jobs. “When you work in healthcare, you serve the public every day,” says pharmacist Jennifer Adams, a senior director at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in Alexandria, Virginia.

Job Settings

OPPORTUNITY TRANSLATES TO AN EXCELLENT CAREER. At VCU Health System, finding the path to success is an extraordinary journey. For Bryan Castro it means bridging a gap between patients and caregivers. As a Spanish interpreter he works closely with many departments to assist their patients throughout the course of treatment. Bryan is currently working towards his master’s in public health, which he expects to complete in 2015. He is grateful for the education assistance and flexible scheduling he found at VCUHS. This, along with competitive pay and extensive medical benefits, makes VCUHS an ideal place for anyone to pursue a successful career. For purposes of this article, healthcare jobs are grouped into five detailed industries: hospitals, offices of health practitioners, nursing and residential care facilities, home healthcare services, and outpatient, laboratory, and other ambulatory care services. In 2013, there were more than 15.8 million jobs in these industries, according to BLS. Table 1 shows where the jobs were, by detailed industry. The data in this section are from the BLS Current Employment Statistics survey, which cover wage and salary workers only and do not include self-employed and unpaid family workers. Hospitals accounted for the largest number of jobs in healthcare, about 39 percent of total healthcare employment in 2013. Employers include general medical and surgical hospitals, psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals, and specialty hospitals. Most jobs are in private hospitals, but some jobs are in hospitals funded by federal, state, or local governments. Offices of health practitioners made up about 26 percent of healthcare employment in 2013. Employers include offices of physicians, dentists, and other health practitioners, such as chiropractors and physical therapists. Nursing and residential care facilities accounted for about 20 percent of healthcare jobs in 2013. Skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities for the elderly, and continuing care retirement communities are included in this detailed industry. Other facilities offer housing and care for people who need help related to mental health, substance abuse, or intellectual or developmental disability. Home healthcare services had about 8 percent of healthcare jobs in 2013. Employers include businesses that provide a variety of services in peoples’ homes, such as skilled nursing care, personal care, and physical therapy. Outpatient, laboratory, and other ambulatory care services also had about 8 percent of healthcare jobs in 2013. Employers include ambulance services, medical and diagnostic laboratories, family planning centers, and outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers.

Past and Future Growth

Employment in the healthcare industry has been growing steadily for years, BLS data show. This growth is due, in part, to people depending on health services no matter what the economic climate. Even when total U.S. employment fell during the 2007–09 recession, for example, healthcare employment continued to rise. “Healthcare is recession-proof,” says Kim Brummett, a senior director at the American Association for Homecare in Washington, DC. “There is always a need.” And because healthcare-related jobs often require personal interaction, they are difficult to outsource or replace with automation, as happens in some other industries.

“Job stability is one of the best parts about any healthcare career,” says Adams. “We’re always going to need healthcare providers, no matter what area of healthcare you choose for a career.” And each area of healthcare is expected to offer many career opportunities through 2022. The 2012–22 projections data are from the BLS Employment Projections program and cover wage and salary, self-employed, and unpaid family workers.

Healthcare Growth

BLS projects healthcare employment to grow by 26 percent between 2012 and 2022, an increase of about 4.1 million jobs. Several factors are expected to lead to this growth, including the following: • A growing population. Over the decade, the U.S. population is projected to increase by about 9 percent. A larger population requires more healthcare services, leading to projected job growth in the industry. • More people who are older. The number of people ages 65 and older is projected to grow by about 40 percent between 2012 and 2022—the fastest of any age group. Compared with younger people, older people typically have greater healthcare needs. As a result, the healthcare industry is expected to add jobs. • Chronic conditions. More people in the United States are expected to seek treatment for chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity. Additional workers are expected to be needed to help prevent, manage, and treat the health concerns associated with these conditions. • Medical advances. Improvements in medicine and technology also are expected to increase demand for healthcare services, creating more jobs for the workers who provide these services. • Health insurance reform. As more people get health insurance coverage, the number of people seeking routine medical care is expected to grow. In turn, more jobs are projected to be added for workers who treat these people.

“Job stability is one of the best parts about any healthcare career,” says Adams. “We’re always going to need healthcare providers, no matter what area of healthcare you choose for a career.” Offices of health practitioners are projected to add more jobs—1.2 million—than any other type of healthcare employer. Some of this increase reflects expected cost-cutting efforts to shift demand for health services away from hospitals, which are relatively expensive. Because hospitals make up a big portion of all healthcare employment, however, the number of new jobs in hospitals is still expected to be large over the decade. Home healthcare services is projected to be the fastest growing detailed industry in the economy, with employment projected to increase by almost 60 percent between 2012 and 2022. As greater numbers of older people seek care that allows them to stay in their homes and maintain their independence, the need for workers in home healthcare services is expected to expand.

Occupations in Healthcare

In addition to offering many opportunities, the healthcare industry offers plenty of career options. Workers in healthcare do tasks such as scheduling patient appointments, drawing blood for laboratory work, cleaning facilities, preparing food, diagnostic testing, and filling prescriptions. This section highlights employment, wages, and projected new jobs in selected occupations for each of the detailed healthcare industries. May 2013 employment and wage data are from the BLS Occupational Employment Statistics survey and are for wage and salary workers only. (The median wage is the point at which half of all wage and salary workers in the occupation made more than that amount, and half earned less.) Occupations by occupational group include those that had at least 50,000 jobs in May 2013. Many other occupations have jobs in these detailed industries too, but they had fewer jobs and are not listed. The highest and lowest wages discussed are for occupations with 1,000 jobs or more in a detailed industry in May 2013. For comparison purposes, the median annual wage for wage and salary workers across all industries in May 2013 was $35,080.

Occupations in hospitals are diverse. However, occupations with the most projected jobs probably include ones you’d expect to find in this setting. Jobs in hospitals are often shift-based, with weekend and holiday work sometimes required, because hospitals provide care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Registered nurse Heather Hahn, for example, works a 12-hour shift 3 days a week, mostly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every 4 weeks she works nights for a week. July 2014 Occupational Wages

According to BLS, May 2013 median annual wages in hospitals ranged from $20,850 for restaurant, lounge, and coffee shop hosts and hostesses to more than $187,200 (the highest median annual wage published by BLS) for surgeons, chief executives, anesthesiologists, and obstetricians and gynecologists. Food preparation and serving occupations, such as cafeteria, food concession, and coffee shop counter attendants ($22,990), had some of the lowest wages in hospitals in May 2013. But hospitals also have many high-paying occupations. At least 11 occupations in the health diagnosing and treating practitioners group, for example, had median annual wages of more than $100,000 in hospitals in May 2013.

Projected New Jobs

BLS projects hospitals to add about 826,000 jobs between 2012 and 2022. Nearly onethird—about 262,000 jobs— are expected to be for registered nurses. Other positions that are projected to add many jobs in hospitals between 2012 and 2022 include radiologic technologists, maids and housekeeping cleaners, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and medical and clinical laboratory technicians.

Offices of Health Practitioners

Workers in offices of health practitioners, usually work a standard 9-to-5, Mondaythrough-Friday schedule. Some offices, however, are also open on weekends or in the evenings to accommodate patient schedules. And workers may be on call at other times to respond to emergencies.

for deciding on—or against—a career. “It’s not like what you see on TV,” says Hahn. “Some people get into it and discover it’s not for them.” Volunteering, part-time jobs, and internships are great ways to get a feel for what healthcare work is really like—and to gain knowledge and start making contacts. “Ask family members or guidance counselors if they know of anyone who works in healthcare,” says Drake. “Start to network, and ask workers for informational interviews to find out about entry-level positions.” The more you know about the occupations in healthcare, the easier it will be to identify those that best fit your interests and skills. “Learn about what each of the health professions does,” says Adams. “A lot of times we have our own perceptions about what people do, which may not be accurate.” So take some time and ask around. Still Don’t Know What You Want To Be “When You Grow Up”? Here Are 3 Ways To Find Out:

I

by Valerie Young

f you’re well into your career but still aren’t really sure what you want to be “when you grow up,” join the mid-life career crisis club! Here are three ways to help you discover your heart’s content. 1. Forget Skill Sets, Think Satisfaction.

In her book, I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was, career guru Barbara Sher points out that finding your passion is more than just figuring out what you’re good at. Reflecting on her own life as a single parent, Sher realized she was clearly “skilled” at raising two children and managing a home on a tight budget. But did she love it? “You live the good life not by doing what you can do,” Sher learned, “but by doing what you want to do.”

2. Pay Attention to Both Past and Present-day Clues.

“My Job Means... I can give excellent patient care.”

In his famous interview with Bill Moyers, renowned mythology scholar Joseph Campbell said, “The way to find out about your happiness, is to keep your mind on those moments when you feel most happy, when you are really happy – not excited, not just thrilled, but deeply happy.” The first place to search for clues to your present day passion is in your own childhood. I once read about a man, who, as a young boy loved to make sand castles. Guess what he does for a living now? He runs a company that travels around the world making elaborate sand sculptures for ocean-side special events! What about today? What so engrosses you that you scarcely notice the time? Is it watching NASCAR racing? Gardening? Tinkering with a broken toaster? Surfing the Internet? Exploring a museum? Traveling? Helping a friend work through a problem? Tracing your family history? Organizing a closet? Working with children? Get a small pad of paper or dedicate a section of your organizer to your passion. As something new hits you, add it to the list. Still stumped? Try making up your own “I’d rather be__________” bumper sticker. One of the best way to expand your thinking – and your options – is by stepping outside the confines of your day-to-day life. Consider signing up for a class on something entirely new to you like bookbinding, feng shui, woodworking, cooking, copywriting, small engine, or computer repair. Try reading publications outside your typical areas of interest or expertise. If you usually stick to news or women’s magazines, pick up a copy of National Geographic, Antiques Monthly or Down Beat. Even if you don’t read a single article the advertisements alone will open your eyes to a multitude of fascinating ways to earn a living. And remember, “When you love what you do,” says author and management guru Harvey McKay, “you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

Should Young People Postpone College Enrollment? By Ashley Salter

E

ach year as high-school graduation approaches, a fresh group of bright and eager young people face tough decisions about what to do next. Where should they go to college? Should they go immediately? Should they wait a year or more to enroll? Are there viable paths to success and fulfillment that don’t involve college at all? In addition to these questions, millennials, the generation of individuals born between 1980 and 2000, have faced skyrocketing costs for higher education and dismal prospects for employment after college. The millennial experience suggests that today’s young people might be better served by postponing college for at least a year. Though waiting is not for everyone, there are four reasons to consider postponing college enrollment.

To Acquire Skills First

Fewer than one third of college graduates have jobs directly related to their college majors. In an uncertain economy, every college graduate needs a back-up plan, another set of skills and experiences that she can draw on if she’s unable to find work in her chosen field. Many graduates, when they can’t find jobs in the fields they have studied for, are left with meager options such as waiting tables or working retail. However, individuals who take a year or two after graduation to build other skills have more and better job options. Millennials are known for being passionate about their interests and tenaciously pursuing things that intrigue or inspire them. Taking a year or two after high school to explore one of those interests can be a smart investment in the future. You could apprentice yourself to an electrician or to someone in another skilled trade. You could learn to run a restaurant kitchen, to train dogs, or to design websites. These things can be accomplished by starting out humbly―as apprentice, dish washer, dog washer, or novice designer doing small jobs―then gradually gaining experience

and responsibility. The keys to advancement in these situations are finding an experienced professional willing to mentor you, letting him or her know your goals, and then working hard to learn the job. Though mentor-apprentice relationships are no longer the standard way for young people to learn a profession, it is a time-tested method that works.

To Avoid Student-Loan Debt

In 2013, the average college graduate had $30,000 of student loan debt. The average monthly payment was around $300, and repayment usually takes 10 years. This extra debt can make it more difficult for young people to start their retirement savings and buy their first homes. Getting a college degree can actually impede other important life goals. Individuals who have taken the time to learn a marketable skill or trade are better able to pay some or all of their college costs as they go, leaving them in a better financial position after graduation.

To Know What You Really Want to Do

Older students, whether they’ve postponed education for a few years or for decades, usually have clear goals and concrete motivation to finish their chosen degrees.

Practically as soon as kids can talk, adults start asking them what they want to be when they grow up. Little kids almost always have answers, but young adults can understandably feel uncertain about such a weighty decision. They feel pressure to choose quickly so as to not waste tuition money and credit hours on the wrong major. Any college teacher or adviser who interacts with traditional freshmen, those coming straight from high school, can tell you how common these worries are. But ask college teachers how the older-than-average students tend to perform, and they’ll have many positive observations to share. Older students, whether they’ve postponed education for a few years or for decades, usually have clear goals and concrete motivation to finish their chosen degrees. They’ve had more time to consider what is important to them in a career, to research the job market, and to understand their own personalities. They also tend to have a greater level of maturity that helps them successfully navigate the challenges of college such as working independently and juggling multiple deadlines. So a student who waits is more likely to be a successful student who does not waste tuition money or accrue more debt while exploring career options.

To See if You Should Skip College Altogether

In 2011, PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel paid two dozen young people $100,000 each to spend two years developing business plans rather than attending college. His actions might not seem so unusual if attitudes and expectations about college had not changed significantly in recent decades. A generation ago college degrees were still seen as advantageous but not essential. A bachelor’s degree opened doors to more career options, but it was not a necessity. Today, however, a four-year degree is often viewed as essential to having any meaningful career or achieving even a modicum of success in life. This widely accepted view of college is limiting to young people because it ignores other paths to success such as apprenticeship, entrepreneurship, certificate programs, and on-the-job training. It also ignores the fact that many college graduates end up working in jobs that do not require a college degree. About 8 percent of college graduates are unemployed. Perhaps these statistics could be improved if college was again an option rather than the default plan. Waiting two years to go to college is certainly not for everyone. High school graduates who have secured full scholarships or those with partial funding and absolute certainty about their career plans might want to go straight away. But for the average would-be college student, a little time away from school can lead to a better college experience and might reveal alternatives to the four-year degree. STEM 101: Intro To Tomorrow’s Jobs “The future of the economy is in STEM,” says James Brown, the executive director of the STEM Education Coalition in Washington, D.C. “That’s where the jobs of tomorrow will be.”

E

mployment in occupations related to STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics— is projected to grow to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022. That’s an increase of about 1 million jobs over 2012 employment levels. This article provides an overview of STEM work, analyzing nearly 100 occupations from a list created by a committee comprising several federal agencies. The first section of the article offers a brief description of the life and physical sciences, computer science, engineering, and mathematics fields. The second section includes data showing selected STEM occupations with the most employment and projected job openings and growth. The third section discusses the rewards and challenges of STEM work. The fourth section describes how to prepare for a career in a STEM field. Resources for more information are listed at the end of the article.

What is STEM?

There is no universally agreed-upon definition of STEM. Experts generally do agree, however, that STEM workers

use their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, or math to try to understand how the world works and to solve problems. Their work often involves the use of computers and other tools. STEM occupations are identified in a variety of ways. This article uses a list based on the Standard Occupational Classification Manual to analyze occupations from six groups, including computer and mathematics; architecture and engineering; and life, physical, and social sciences. Healthcare occupations are excluded from this analysis, because they are described in a separate article beginning on page 28 of this issue. STEM fields are closely related and build on each other. For example, math provides the foundation for physics— and physics, in turn, for engineering. Engineers can apply their knowledge of physics to make high-tech devices that are useful for testing theories in physics. Advances in physics may then lead to advances in engineering and technology. To better understand STEM, a brief description of each field follows.

natural world through observation and experimentation. “Science is a lens to interpret the world,” says Julie Herrick, a volcanologist at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. “My job is to expand knowledge.” Science workers can also inform public policy, such as by providing data to support limits on the use of toxic chemicals. The work of scientists often involves research, writing proposals and academic papers, and presenting findings. Science technicians collect samples, conduct experiments, and do other tasks to assist scientists in those efforts. Workers rely on the scientific method to objectively test hypotheses and theories. The scientific method requires repeatable experiments that produce predictable and observable data. When the data matches a theory’s predictions, the experiment supports that theory. Theories with the most supportive evidence are adopted but may continue to evolve, based on new evidence. Disciplines in science are categorized based on the part of the universe they study: space sciences, earth sciences, life sciences, chemistry, and physics. For example, the life sciences study the living world, such as plants or the human body; disciplines include ecology, genetics, neuroscience, pathology, and nutrition.

tech workers develop software applications and build and maintain computer networks and databases. Technology work connects people, making all forms of communication—including business transactions, video sharing, and mobile browsing—faster and less expensive. The work often involves designing, testing, maintaining, and improving computer software, hardware, systems, and networks. “The goal is not only to solve a problem, but also to make that problem easier to solve in the future,” says Dan Parsons, an IT manager in Portland, Oregon. STEM technology refers to disciplines in computer and information sciences, including those related to operating systems, artificial intelligence, programming, cryptography, and mobile computing.

Engineering

Engineers and engineering technicians use math, science, and technology to solve realworld problems. The work often involves developing systems, structures, products, or materials. For example, a civil engineer might design a new train station to accommodate more passengers, and an environmental engineering technician might help create an environmental remediation device. “Engineering makes things better and cheaper for everyone,” says Patrick Holm, a project civil engineer in Olympia, Washington. Rewards and challenges

STEM work, like that of most jobs, is both rewarding and challenging. You might work on an interesting project that yields meaningful results, for example—but, to complete it, you might need to repeat an experiment many times or navigate complex government regulations. Rewards Many STEM workers find their jobs intellectually stimulating. They enjoy collaborating with people who share their enthusiasm and working with cuttingedge technology. “STEM offers a cooperative, innovative, and exciting work environment that is unparalleled,” says Aimee Outlook and wages Kennedy, vice president for eduOverall, STEM occupations cation and STEM learning at are projected to grow faster than Battelle Memorial Institute in the average for all occupations. example, projects may take hundreds of hours over weeks or months to complete. And routine tasks may include cataloging data, filling out paperwork, and documenting observations. “There’s a lot of sitting in front of a computer,” says Frances Tirado, a mathematical statistician at BLS in Washington, DC. Other challenges vary, depending on the field. For example, many jobs in scientific research receive short-term financial support so these workers often worry about funding. And engineering workers must juggle different priorities, from clients and the government, while keeping a project on schedule. “There are a lot of demands to satisfy,” Holm says, “so you can’t always do what you think is the best solution.” Despite the challenges, however, STEM workers often report feeling respected and fulfilled. “You feel that what you’re doing is important and you matter as an employee,” says Tirado. “People value your skills, listen to your ideas, and think that what you do is magic.”

Getting started

STEM experts recommend that prospective STEM workers have a combination of skills, education, and experience for getting started in these careers.

Skills

Critical and creative thinking help STEM workers in problem solving to detect mistakes, gather relevant information, and understand how different parts or systems interact with each other.

San Francisco VA Medical Center 4150 Clement Street San Francisco, CA 94121 We are an equal opportunity employer.

Along with having a technical foundation, prospective STEM workers must have strong thinking and communication skills. “People focus so much on math and science that they often ignore these skills,” Holm says. Ability to consider problems in different ways and then being able to explain a solution clearly is essential for success in STEM occupations. Thinking skills. Critical and creative thinking help STEM workers in problem solving to detect mistakes, gather relevant information, and understand how different parts or systems interact with each other. STEM workers also need thinking skills to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions. Workers who think creatively may approach a problem differently—for example, by adapting knowledge from other disciplines. “Oftentimes, you’re the last resort for a problem because no one else could solve it,” Tirado says. “Creativity can help you come up with a solution no else could.” Communication skills. Communication skills are important for working well with others and conveying information clearly, both orally and in writing. “Flaws in communication are a common source of conflict,” says Parsons. “You’ll usually work with or for someone else, so having these skills will make you stand

Many STEM occupations require at least a bachelor’s degree. More technical and advanced jobs, including those in research, usually require a master’s or doctoral degree. But STEM isn’t only for people who have a bachelor’s or graduate degree. Many occupations typically require an associate’s degree, and a small number require either some college but no degree or a high school diploma or equivalent. Although you may already know which specific occupation you want to pursue, don’t fret if you are unsure. Some disciplines, such as math and physics, are useful in many STEM fields. “Students should follow what they want to do,” Brown says. “There are lots of options in STEM, in whatever area you’re interested in.”

“Students should follow what they want to do,” Brown says. “There are lots of options in STEM, in whatever area you’re interested in.” Workers in some STEM occupations may need training after they are hired to gain competency in the occupation. Others may need licensure, depending on the type of work that they do. High school diploma. You don’t have to wait until college to prepare for a STEM career. Most high schools offer a variety of math and science classes, for example. STEM workers recommend pursuing challenging ones—such as Advanced Placement (AP) courses—to improve your transcript and adjust to the demands of STEM work. “Take as many rigorous classes as you can,” Kennedy says, “as early as you can.” Surveying and mapping technicians is an example of a STEM occupation typically open to high school graduates. Associate’s degree. An associate’s degree is awarded upon completion of an undergraduate program that typically lasts at least 2 years. Occupations that require an associate’s degree include chemical technicians, computer network support specialists, and mechanical drafters. Bachelor’s degree. A bachelor’s degree usually requires 4 years of undergraduate study. Many STEM occupations require this degree, including actuaries, civil engineers, and information security analysts. But don’t become so focused on one discipline that you overlook the importance of developing a broad, well-rounded education. “You get problems from anywhere,” says Tirado, “so you need to know a little about everything.” Use college electives to sample other STEM disciplines or completely different areas of study, such as the humanities. Graduate degree. Still other STEM occupations typically require a master’s or doctoral degree. A master’s degree usually requires 1 or 2 years beyond a bachelor’s degree. Many master’s programs also require students to write a research paper, known as a thesis. STEM occupations that typically require a master’s degree include epidemiologists, hydrologists, and statisticians. A doctoral degree usually requires at least 3 years beyond a bachelor’s degree. To receive a doctoral degree, students must often complete a dissertation, a lengthy research project that contributes new knowledge to the field. Occupations that require a doctoral degree include animal scientists, computer and information research scientists, and physicists.

Experience

In some STEM occupations, work experience in a related occupation is required at the entry level. For example, computer and information systems

managers usually need at least 5 years of experience, first honing their technical skills in lower-level roles before moving to management. Even in occupations that don’t require it, however, work experience often sets you apart. “Companies want to bring you up to speed so you can be productive quickly,” says Holm. “But there are so many skills you don’t learn in school that you can only learn on the job.” STEM workers advise you to look for internship, volunteer, and research opportunities as early as possible: while you are still in school, not waiting until afterward. Your career advisor or counselor may have information about businesses that offer these types of opportunities. Before applying for such positions, be sure to document in a resume or portfolio your experience and accomplishments. Highlight school or work assignments that confirm your qualifications and that help set you apart from other candidates. Getting experience before graduation also can help you determine whether a STEM career will be right for you. “It’s important to find something that excites you,” Herrick says, “because working in STEM means making an investment in a passion.” As you broaden your experience, you should also broaden your network. “Your network is more important than your resume,” says Brown, and should include mentors, business colleagues, and instructors. Develop a network by meeting people through work, volunteer, and internship positions; joining a club or working on a research project; and participating in job fairs, industry events, and online discussion boards. Work experience can teach valuable lessons, such as how to cope with stress and persevere despite difficulties. “You must be comfortable knowing that you will struggle and won’t know all the answers,” says Tirado. “But, as a result, you’re going to learn much more and become a better worker.”

Careers with Options

ooking for a career with options? Consider an occupation with jobs in many industries. Workers in some occupations spend most of their careers in just one industry. Teachers, for example, often work only in schools. But in other occupations, workers have more flexibility to change industries. This career mobility is common for workers whose skills are needed in many settings.

For example, network and computer systems administrators have technical skills that are sought after in more than 200 industries. This article uses data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to show selected occupations with considerable career mobility. It describes widely distributed occupations in four groups: business and financial operations, computer and mathematics, management, and office and administrative support. Each section includes details about the occupations and their industries of employment. Sources for more information are at the end.Occupations, Industries, and Mobility As discussed in this article, career mobility may depend on the number of industries that have jobs for a particular occupation. But what’s the difference between an occupation and an industry—and how might they fit together to affect career mobility? An occupation groups jobs based on the tasks that workers do. For example, jobs for workers who make structures out of wood are classified under the occupation of carpenter. An industry groups businesses based on the type of product the business makes or on the service it provides. For example, the residential building construction industry consists of businesses that make homes. Occupational employment may be concentrated in just a few industries or dispersed among many, but workers in almost every occupation have at least some ability to change industries. For example, although nearly half of all jobs for carpenters are in residential or nonresidential building construction, smaller numbers of these jobs are in other industries, including ship and boat building; home furnishings stores; and highway, bridge, and street construction. The more widely an occupation has jobs in a variety of industries, the more mobile it may be. So, in contrast to carpenters, whose jobs are in relatively few industries, jobs in the occupations highlighted in this article are spread out across hundreds of diverse industries. Workers in these occupations may have more mobility and more choices about the type of employer they work for. The ability to change industries gives workers an opportunity for varied employment. An occupation’s specifics may differ from one industry to another. Occupations with options Many types of employers require workers with knowledge of business and financial operations, computers and mathematics, management, and office and administrative support. Workers in

these four groups may have job options in a wide range of industries. The tables accompanying each of the sections highlight occupations that may offer mobility and their May 2013 employment and median annual wages, according to BLS. The data in the tables do not include self-employed workers. Annual wages show the median for all workers in the occupation—meaning that half of all workers in the occupation earned more than that amount, and half earned less. Compare wages with the median annual wage for all workers: $35,080 in May 2013. The accompanying text discusses the occupational groups generally and has additional detail about the three occupations in each table that had the largest numbers of jobs. These details include job descriptions, industry examples, and selected industry wages. Industries that BLS identified as having fewer than 1,000 jobs in an occupation inMay 2013 are not included. Business and financial operations The success of almost any business depends, at least in part, on its finances and operational efficiency. For this reason, many industries need workers in occupations related to business and financial operations. As a group, these occupations usually pay well but require formal training. All of the occupations in table 1 had wages that were higher than the median annual wage for all occupations in May 2013. And all of the occupations except for purchasing agents typically require at least a bachelor’s degree at the entry level, according to BLS. Accountants and auditors. Accountants and auditors analyze and prepare financial records. They also offer tax and financial advice and help businesses keep track of expenses to run more efficiently. Accountants and auditors were employed in more than 280 industries in May 2013, according to BLS. Accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services had the most jobs for accountants and auditors, about 28 percent of them in May 2013. Other employers include local government, automobile dealers, and general medical and surgical

Other industries that pay well for accountants and auditors are securities and commodity contracts intermediation and brokerage, software publishers, and motion picture and video industries. They also design systems or procedures to help businesses better achieve goals. In May 2013, there were about 200 industries that employed management analysts. Management, scientific, and technical consulting services had the largest number of these jobs, about 27 percent of the total. The federal executive branch; computer systems design and related services; and colleges, universities, and professional schools are among the other employers. The federal executive branch, software publishers, and aerospace product and parts manufacturing also pay well. Computer and mathematics. Because computers are used in most industries, workers in computer-related occupations have many employment options. Computer and mathematics occupations often pay well: every occupation listed in table 2 had a median annual wage that was higher than the median wage for all occupations. And 7 of the 10 occupations in the table had a median wage that was more than double the median for all occupations. To enter these occupations, workers typically need at least a bachelor’s degree. Computer user support specialists and computer network support specialists are exceptions; BLS classifies these two occupations as typically requiring some college education but no degree, plus on-the-job training. Applications software developers. These workers design and customize computer programs. Job tasks include analyzing user needs, developing and testing software, and creating models and diagrams showing computer programmers how to write software code. In May 2013, BLS data show, more than 150 industries employed applications software developers. About 34 percent of these

industries that pay well are agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing; natural gas distribution; andaerospace product and parts manufacturing. Management Leadership is essential for any type of business.Workers in management occupations provide this leadership in a variety of industries. Median annual wages for many of the occupations in table 3 were at least three times higher than the median for all occupations in May 2013, according to BLS. But those high wages are due, in part, to the education and experience workers need to become managers. All of the occupations in the table typically require a bachelor’s degree and work experience in a related occupation. The experience required of managers might affect their mobility. A sales manager in pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing, for example, often has experience in the industry as a sales worker before becoming a manager. Therefore, a sales manager in another industry may not have the knowledge needed to work in pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing. General and operations managers. These workers have a broad range of duties related to overseeing business activities. Job tasks include creating policies, managing budgets, and planning for the future.
