friend I’ve had for nearly 20 years invited me over for dinner last week. We both have very busy work schedules and we talk on the phone fairly often, but it was nice to put aside an entire evening so we could truly catch up. After dinner we sat and talked for hours. At some point my friend pulled out a photo album and we pointed and giggled at images of our younger selves, remembering old friends we’ve since lost contact with, recalling trips we had taken and parties we threw. It was a delightful evening. And boy did looking at those photos help me remember how quickly time passes and how things can change in what seems to be just a blink of an eye! It reminded me that what we’re doing right now in our lives will also someday be a time to look back on, memories to either appreciate or regret. I believe it is important for us to spend the time we have enjoying what we do. Maybe it’s just that I’m getting older, but I’m truly getting the fact that life is short, and getting shorter every day.

Helping Veterans TRANSITION to the Workplace
M
any employers value armed services veterans as employees for their leadership, performance under pressure, loyalty, integrity, and ability to work as part of a team. Furthermore, hiring veterans can demonstrate an employer’s social responsibility, patriotism, and willingness to hire diverse candidates. Still, there are steps employers should make to help those returning from military service—especially those in combat situations—shift to the workplace. “As our troops transition from the longest war in U.S. history, we must prepare for their return,” explains Ed Crenshaw, U.S. Navy veteran and president and CEO of DESTIN Enterprises, an employment services and consulting firm that developed the “Preparing Employers to Reintegrate Combat Exposed Veterans with Disabilities” (PERCEVD) diversity training program. “Many [veterans] have served multiple combat tours and the latest statistics reflect that one in five may now experience some form of combat-related mental health impairment.” Two common combat-related mental health conditions are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), although neither is limited to veterans. PTSD is an anxiety disorder that develops after a person experiences or witnesses an extremely distressing event involving actual or threatened death or physical harm. A TBI is an injury to the brain caused by a person’s head being hit, shaken violently, or penetrated by an object.
Crenshaw notes that approximately 1.4 million Americans per year experience TBIs, and 50 percent of these injuries are caused by auto accidents. In many cases, PTSD and TBI can be treatable with medications, counseling, therapy, and/or time. “Although many employers consider it altruistic to hire transitioning veterans, some workplace environments may inadvertently exacerbate conditions by exposing employees to potential PTSD trigger issues,” Crenshaw notes. These trigger issues can vary based on the workplace or social environment, along with certain occupation requirements. Crenshaw explains that PTSD triggers can represent certain sounds, images, smells, and even people who can produce flashbacks, anxieties, or intrusive thoughts related to life-threatening experiences and/or memories of intense situations. As a result, it is important for employers to provide sensitivity training and make necessary accommodations for someone with PTSD, TBI, and other disabilities to be able to be comfortable in the workplace and maximize their work experience. Crenshaw says that a lack of inclusive practices and a failure to provide appropriate support resources for returning veterans (including those with hidden disabilities) can create mistakes

sleep disorders, substance and/or alcohol abuse, financial counseling programs and other areas of need,” he notes. “Workplace diversity, health, and readiness should always be emphasized.” Support and reassurance also comes in the form of demonstrating the company or organization’s commitment to veterans in their culture, community outreach, literature, and media,” Crenshaw points out. Crenshaw says implementing diversity sensitivity training for all organization employees will help to raise awareness of the issues and create a baseline understanding of the various physical and hidden disabilities. “Many workplace accommodations are considered very reasonable and cost less than $500,” Crenshaw adds. “These measures can help to increase productivity, mitigate litigation, reduce turnover and create more conducive workplace environments.”
“Implementing diversity sensitivity training for all organization employees will help to raise awareness of the issues and create a baseline understanding of the various physical and hidden disabilities.” Following are some tips from Crenshaw for working with veterans, specifically those with PTSD or TBIs: Create a workplace environment in which veterans can work comfortably: • Provide flexible schedules. • Paint cheerful colors in office and work areas. • Write down instructions for the cognitively impaired. • Respect medication-related ups and downs. • Encourage proper amounts of rest, exercise, and healthy living habits. • Provide diversity sensitivity training. • Allow employees the opportunity to sit facing doors and windows. Implement supportive practices: • Avoid discussions of war or related controversial subjects. • Practice patience in all employee and customer interactions. • Acknowledge military experience during the employment interviews. • Acknowledge military customs and holidays. • Provide mentors, employee assistance programs, and support programs. • Include veterans and persons with disabilities in career fair activities. • Include feedback from focus groups in business decisions. Have strict policies that address persons with disabilities: • Do not tolerate offensive jokes and remarks. • Practice proper etiquette towards persons with disabilities. • Emphasize respect and inclusive practices. • Employees without disabilities should not use disability toilets or parking spaces, but should respect the disability-related infrastructure. This article was adapted from Ed Crenshaw’s presentation titled “Understanding PTSD, TBI, and Best Practices Strategies Toward Accommodating Transitioning Veterans” at the NACE 2010 Annual Conference. • Assess students to evaluate their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses • Grade students’ assignments to monitor their progress • Communicate with parents about their student’s progress • Develop and enforce classroom rules • Advise student organizations related to career fields Career and technical education teachers use a variety of methods to help students learn and develop skills. They teach students the theories and techniques of their field and the laws and regulations that affect that industry. They demonstrate tasks, techniques, and tools used in the field. They also assign hands-on tasks, such as styling hair on mannequins and replacing brakes on cars, to help students develop skills. Students typically practice these tasks in laboratories in the school. In addition, teachers use work-based experiences to help students apply what they have learned in the classroom to realworld settings. Some students use class time to work at a business that is willing to let them learn on the job; the business then provides feedback about the student’s performance to the teacher. In some schools, students run businesses that are owned by the school, such as a school store, to apply their knowledge and skills in a nonclassroom setting. Some career and technical education teachers teach in traditional schools. These teachers may be part of a career academy,
where they work closely with academic colleagues to create a career-themed school within a school. Others teach in regional career and technical education centers that serve students from many districts. Some teach in a career and technical education high school, where students are in workshops and laboratories for most of the school day. What career and technical education teachers do depends on their particular field. The following are examples of types of career and technical education teachers: In agricultural science, students learn a variety of subjects related to the science and business of agriculture. Classes may cover topics such as agricultural production; agriculture-related business; veterinary science; and plant, animal, and food systems. Teachers in this field may have students plant and care for crops or tend to animals to apply what they have learned in the classroom. Career and technical education teachers in family and consumer science teach students about nutrition, culinary art, sewing, and child development. Students in these settings may run early childhood education classes with teacher supervision, manufacture and market clothing, or create menus and cook for a school function. In health-related occupations, students learn the skills necessary to work as technicians or assistants, such as nursing or dental assistants, in health care. Teachers in this field may have students practice their skills

Many programs operate schoolbased enterprises in which students operate real businesses that are open to the public. Career and technical education teachers in trade and industry specialize in an occupation such as in automotive technology, cosmetology, heating and air-conditioning repair, electrical wiring, or computer networking and computer repair. Teachers use laboratory work to allow students to learn through a hands-on approach. Career and technical education teachers in technology instruct students in general education subjects, such as math and science, through the hands-on application of technology. For example, they may have students build a robot to learn about physics, computer science, and math. These programs are often a precursor to engineering degrees.

Requirements for certification vary by state. However, most states require completing a teacher preparation program and at least a bachelor’s degree or work experience in the field. Teacher preparation programs include supervised experience in teaching, which is typically gained through student teaching. Some states require a minimum grade point average. States typically require candidates to pass a general teaching certification test, as well as a test of their knowledge in the subject they will teach. For certification requirements in your state, contact the U.S. Department of Education. Teachers often must take annual professional development classes to keep their license. Electric Vehicle Careers: On the Road to Change T
he electric vehicle industry could be revving up. And if industry growth accelerates, so will job creation in related occupations. Many occupations related to electric vehicles are similar to those that help to make and maintain all types of automobiles. But the industry is also adding some nontraditional jobs, and workers’ skill sets must evolve to keep up. This article describes careers related to electric vehicles. The first section is about the electric vehicle industry and its growth. The second section describes selected occupations related to electric vehicles, including those in scientific research, engineering, manufacturing, maintenance, and infrastructure development. A third section discusses training for workers interested in electric vehicle jobs. The final section gives sources for more information.

Electric vehicles have been around, in one form or another, since the invention of the automobile. In fact, electric vehicles even outsold gasoline-powered vehicles in the early 1900s. With improvements to gasoline engines and the availability of cheap fuel, electric vehicles fell out of favor throughout much of the 20th century. But these vehicles are now making a comeback. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, U.S. sales of electric cars increased from near zero in 1999 to about 250,000 in 2010. Sales of these vehicles are expected to continue rising as electric vehicle technology The Agricultural Division of Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, L.L.C. is located in Des Moines, Iowa, stands on almost 120 acres and has 1500 employees. ger lasting batteries for plug-in and all-electric vehicles would allow them to go longer distances without needing to be recharged. To make electric vehicles a viable alternative to conventional ones, scientists strive to make batteries that recharge faster and last longer between charges. And while nonelectric vehicles can be filled with gas in a matter of minutes, most current batteries require several hours to fully charge. Scientists also work on batteries to improve hybrid vehicles’ fuel economy. The longer a vehicle can be driven on battery power alone, the less fuel it will consume. Improved batteries will allow vehicles to rely more on electric propulsion and less on fossil fuels. Scientists usually work in offices and laboratories. Some laboratories are small, but others are large enough to incorporate prototype chemical manufacturing facilities and advanced testing equipment. Scientists might also work for industrial manufacturers alongside engineers and processing specialists. Chemists and materials scientists are two
types of scientists who help design electric vehicles. Chemists. All chemists investigate the properties, composition, and structure of matter and the laws that govern the reactions of substances to each other. Using this knowledge, chemists working on electric vehicles find new chemicals to use in batteries or seek ways to improve existing batteries. They work closely with engineers and other scientists to develop new batteries and other technologies. Materials scientists. These workers study the structures and chemical properties of materials to develop new products or enhance existing ones. When working on electric vehicles, materials scientists usually do battery research. Materials scientists also develop other parts of electric vehicles. Structural and mechanical parts made out of lighter or stronger materials help to make electric vehicles more fuel efficient and reliable.

nology. They work in teams with other engineers, scientists, and industrial production managers to create new processes or devices for manufacturing electric vehicles—or to improve existing ones. Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Many engineers produce designs for new products. They start by determining the product’s requirements. Then, they integrate and test the parts that will go into making those products. Finally, they evaluate the design’s effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. Engineers use computers to produce and analyze designs, simulate and test systems, and implement quality control processes. Most engineers work in offices, laboratories, or industrial plants. Engineers are often employed by electric vehicle and parts manufacturers. Manufacturing workers are usually employed by large automotive assembly plants. These plants are usually noisy because they are full of robotic devices, machines, and hydraulic lifts. Safety conditions in assembly plants have improved considerably over the past several decades. However, manufacturing workers might use machinery or chemicals that require special handling. Manufacturing jobs in the electric vehicle industry include electrical and electronic equipment assemblers, electromechanical equipment assemblers, computercontrolled machine tool operators, and machinists. Electrical and electronic equipment assemblers. These assemblers build many of the parts in electric vehicles, including electric motors, computers, electronic control devices, and sensing equipment. Some of the parts used to make these products are too small or fragile to be assembled by people, so they are assembled by automated systems. Charging your Career The broad mix of workers in the electric vehicle industry represents a variety of educational and employment backgrounds. Despite their range of preparation, however, workers have at least one thing in common: most receive specialized training to work on electric vehicles. This section describes sources of industry specific training for electric vehicle workers. In addition to the sources discussed, workers also must meet the minimum requirements for their occupations. For example, most engineers need a bachelor’s or higher degree in engineering; electricians usually must have a high school diploma, complete an apprenticeship, and, in many states, be licensed. Specialized training in electric vehicles varies; it may consist of a single course or

seminar—or significantly more. In some cases, training is paid for by employers. Because electric vehicle technologies are evolving, workers in this industry may need to regularly update their skills. Sources of training include manufacturers, high schools and community colleges, and universities, and on-the-job training.
Manufacturers Electric vehicle and charging station manufacturers provide training on their technologies to workers in a variety of occupations. For example, automotive service technicians are certified by manufacturers to work on specific models of cars or trucks. This training ranges from a few days to several weeks. Electricians go through several days of training to be certified by charging station manufacturers. And engineers usually must be certified in specific systems and technologies, depending on the systems a manufacturer uses.

Five Reasons Why Recruiters Are Using Twitter for Recruitment And why jobseekers should take notice! by Teena Rose
#1 Twitter is free; and with the cost of business sometimes being a hefty burden, even recruitment firms can’t resist the charms of a no-cost, useful online tool. Tips to Ensuring Your Resume Produces Top Results By Teena Rose
A professionally written resume is an important component to any job search. The overall effectiveness of the document however depends on certain variables; such as how/how often the resume is used, the types of marketing/submission strategies, and the continued relevance of the resume’s content. Concentrating on these important aspects (and others) ensures the resume will produce the all-important interviews that we strive for. You see the resume one way, but hiring managers see it differently. 1. Use your resume as it is geared — not how you see it.

You see the resume one way, but hiring managers see it differently. It’s true. You quickly spot all the things that match the hiring company’s job requirements, but all too often, hiring managers painstakingly look for those skills that you see so easily. For example, think about an experienced purchasing agent. Hiring managers will only see purchasing skills in the resume, unless the proper steps have been taken to gear the resume appropriately. Crossing over into another career is doable, but certainly a move that requires preparation from you — and definitely for the resume as well.
2. Persistent actions, not blind submission. Taking a persistent and consistent approach to submitting your resume is one aspect of job search that few jobseekers
take seriously – not necessarily because of the inability to be assertive, but rather due to the large task at hand. Job searching can be exhaustive, and individuals tend to lose initiative after receiving any degree of rejection. Submitting one or two resumes every day or so allows the jobseeker to remain active in their search, yet allow enough time to focus on other aspects of their lives. Job searching can be exhaustive, and individuals tend to lose initiative after receiving any degree of rejection. Need tips for focusing your job-search efforts? Start by building a list of industryspecific employers that best match your skill set and current career focus. Avoid applying to anyone and everyone — what some might call a spitball approach. Create a new list each week, submit your resume and introduction cover letter accordingly, and follow-up with each at some point

companies need their employees to “wear many hats.” Take a secretary, for example. The job responsibilities for a secretary vary tremendously. Modifying the top section of the resume is generally the only upkeep required to ensure the resume continuously fits the lock of the door you’re trying to enter. Yet other modifications, such as rearrangement of categories/headers, replacing certain keywords or key phrases, and the restructuring of employment details, may be some of the additional changes that are needed. The idea is to continuously customize the resume to “fit” the employer’s point of entry.

The Changing Nature of Work, Employment, and Recruiting by Kevin Wheeler

egotiating the conditions of employment, hedging one job with another, being wary of accepting full-time jobs that put at risk other work or that compromise skill — those are becoming the normal patterns for accomplished professionals. Individuals are finding new freedoms and exploring their own capacity and taste for change and entrepreneurism. Some organizations are looking for ways to adapt to all of this without endangering their own success, but it may be that these two different needs are not compatible. We will find out over the next 10 years or less. Certainly manufacturing firms and companies where hands-on work is required will not be able to be flexible enough to these changes. They will face friction between the workers whose jobs allow them to be virtual or part-time or flex-time and those whose work does not. Here are some of the issues, paradoxes, and changes that employers, candidates, recruiters, and human resources are faced with.

These have already complicated the employment market and created confusion as work itself is being redefined and re-calibrated.
Flexible Working Times Everyone wants to work when they want to, whether that is at night, weekends, or during what we call a “normal” working day. Mothers want time with their children and would like to work when the kids are sleeping or in school. Others are more productive in the wee hours and want to sleep in the daytime. And still others want to vary their schedules depending on their mood or family needs. Individual contributors who can work alone are most likely to be able to find work with flexible schedules. People who might enjoy such flexibility include data-input people, researchers, web developers, programmers, and others whose work spans time and is done individually. Some organizations allow flexibility within defined parameters or with prior approval. Only a few are truly open to a varied, unpredictable schedule even if work is done in a timely way and all deadlines are met. My own website is coded and maintained by a person who has a full-time job that gives her flexibility and control over her time and allows her to take on additional work. More firms are offering flexible working times and slowly are focusing on results rather than time as the measures of performance. It will be tough to convince very good people to work for organizations that do not allow flexible work. Employment branding and

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics defines multiple jobholders as people who are either hourly or salary workers who hold two or more jobs; self-employed workers who also hold an hourly or salary job; or unpaid family workers who hold an hourly or salary job as well. Currently official figures indicate that about 5% of Americans fit this category. messaging should be clear about the time requirements, and you should target an audience where flexibility might not be a critical consideration, such as younger men and single folks who do not have children or other responsibilities. You can also target baby boomers who have grown up in a business world without flexibility and are comfortable with that.
Multiple Jobs The U.S. Organizations still expect and seek loyalty, even though they have shown their employees little of that when times get tough. Young workers, especially Gen Ys, often do have more than one source of income. They rarely make that public. They know it would be frowned on or even be the reason for getting them fired. There is very little a recruiter can do about this, but if you reject those who you suspect of having multiple jobs, you will significantly reduce your candidate pool and the quality of that pool.
Virtual Work Having employees working from home or from remote work centers is common, and more employers are allowing this due to a variety of converging reasons, including the desire to save energy, increased travel times, skill shortages, and a global workforce. Over the past decade so many companies have encouraged virtual work that it is almost expected. People are comfortable working with their laptops and smart phones, and have access to Skype accounts and collaborative workspaces. All of these tools make working away from a physical place practical, convenient, and cheap. There is no doubt that this form of employment will grow rapidly and, in my opinion, may make up as much as half the U.S. workforce within a decade as most employers recognize the benefit of allowing workers to be located remotely.
Temporary Work More employers are looking for temporary employees. This used to signal the beginning of a recovery as employers hired temps and then converted them to regular employment as the economy improved. We have seen a significant surge in temporary hiring, but very few are likely to be converted to regular employees.
Page 23
Electric Boat
Both sides are wary of commitment. Employers are not convinced that the economic recovery is sustainable and are reluctant to take on labor that may not be needed. Potential employees are not sure they will have a job that lasts and may be happier with one or two temporary jobs that spread out their risk. This article in the Huffington Post seems to bear this out and is only one of many similar ones.
Generational Mindset As many have written, there are large differences in attitudes about work and time, between the three major generations in the workplace. Baby Boomers (those over 45) are generally traditional and are comfortable with being physically at work, in an organization, and working an 8-hour or longer day. Gen X (those between 30-45) is also comfortable working in traditional ways, but they are more open to virtual work, and demand flexibility for their family. But Gen Ys (those under 30) are the change agents. They do not really want to work for any organization, but especially don’t want to work for those with layers of hierarchy and reams of policies and procedures. They want flexible, virtual work, and are more likely to have multiple jobs. They are the hardest to recruit and the hardest to retain. Yet, finding ways to attract and accommodate them will be crucial because they are the future of most organizations as Baby Boomers age and move out. Long-term unemployment will likely be the new normal, and employers, recruiters, and candidates will find a host of ways to engage people outside of “regular” employment. In fact, the term “regular employment” is becoming meaningless. As the recession continues, many people will find ways to earn a living without relying on traditional jobs. Many of the best will find greater satisfaction in working as consultants or contractors and, while they may technically be unemployed, they may actually live and feel better while earning less. This will be a challenge to our consumer society and its associated economy. Recruiting in this morphing environment will likewise be more and more challenging and require adaptation to recruiting people with different work and pay patterns. Recruiting the regular employee will become a smaller segment of hiring and be more of a challenge than ever before. Kevin Wheeler is a regular contributor at www.isnare.com

What it Takes to Be A Tower Technician In his career, Billy Smith has reached great heights. As a tower technician, Billy climbs up the face of telecommunications towers to remove, install, test, maintain, and repair a variety of equipment—from antennas to light bulbs. Tower technicians also build shelters and radiofrequency shields for electronic equipment, lay coaxial and fiber optic cables, and remove pests and weeds. Sometimes, they set supports and stack construction pieces to build the tower itself. Billy is usually part of a four-person crew: himself and one other technician; a rigger, who moves heavy equipment; and a supervisor, who oversees the job. At the beginning of each workday, the crew members meet to discuss the site they’re working on, the work they will be doing, and any potential safety issues. The crew then travels to the tower site and inspects the tower for hazards, such as power lines or beehives. When the crew is responsible for installing new equipment on a telecommunications tower, Billy and the other technician climb the tower while the supervisor and rigger stay on the ground. The supervisor and rigger send up the necessary equipment and materials to the technicians, who then follow manufacturer specifications or engineers’ blueprints to install the equipment. After installing the equipment, tower technicians need to test it. Simple equipment may need only to be turned on and off. But with sophisticated equipment— such as antennas and fiber optic cable— Billy and the other technician might need to use handheld testing devices to verify
the equipment is properly installed. For example, they might test fiber optic cables for signal loss. The technicians report to engineers any problems, along with recommended solutions, such as adjusting the tilt or location of an antenna. Technicians must be mentally prepared and in good physical shape to climb cell phone towers up to 200 feet tall and broadcasting towers up to 2,000 feet tall. The climb is even more difficult because the heavy equipment they carry—such as replacement parts and tools—can weigh more than 90 pounds. “It can feel like you’re carrying another person,” Billy says. Climbing towers is dangerous work. To stay safe, tower technicians maintain radio contact with the ground crew at all times. But slips, falls, and other accidents—such as overheating from improperly shielded radiofrequency equipment—can happen. To help minimize risk, Billy and other technicians use climbing and safety equipment that latches onto anchors built into the tower frame. This equipment, known as the Personal Fall Arrest System, includes a safety belt, harness, hooks, and lanyards. Technicians use the equipment, along with their hands and feet, to stay safe while they are on the tower. For example, Billy might hook a safety cable to the tower and climb with his hands and feet. But when he needs to hang in place and work with his

hands, he wraps a lanyard through an anchor on the tower and then secures it through two loops on his safety belt. Weather is another threat to technicians’ safety, says Billy. Heavy winds can blow a technician off the tower, for example, and ice causes slippery conditions. During the summer, heat and sunlight can lead to overheating or heatstroke. Technicians also have to watch out for lightning, which can strike the tower from a storm many miles away. Over the years, Billy has learned to judge the weather and to take action to protect himself and his crew. If conditions are poor, Billy’s crew can delay work on the tower until conditions improve. But if he and another technician are already on the tower and the weather suddenly changes, they can rappel down the tower quickly and safely. Before they ascend or descend towers, technicians receive safety training paid for by their employer. The training usually includes instruction in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), proper use of safety equipment, emergency procedures, and rescue operations. “We don’t have to wait for an emergency crew,” says Billy. “We are all trained to do our own rescues.” Employers may also pay for technical training, from troubleshooting equipment to channeling fiber optic cables. On-the-job training typically lasts about 6 weeks. There is no school for tower climbing, and educational requirements are minimal. “You learn most things on the field through trial and error,” Billy says.
But technicians usually bring some skills to the job. An aptitude for computers, mechanics, and climbing are particularly helpful, says Billy, as are dependability and attention to detail. Tower technicians also must pass random drug tests and be willing to travel on assignments, often for months at a time.
Technicians bring skills to the job. An aptitude for computers, mechanics, and climbing are particularly helpful, says Billy, as are dependability and attention to detail. Many tower technicians enter the occupation through personal connections. Billy, for example, was recruited by a cousin who worked in the tower business. “I was climbing oil rigs, but jobs were becoming scarce,” he says. “It was easy to switch to climbing telecommunications towers.” Other tower technicians find work through job advertisements. Online portals that specialize in the tower business are particularly useful. In addition to job ads, these portals often include

news, training courses, and other career resources related to tower work. Anecdotal information suggests that the typical wage for experienced tower technicians is about $20 per hour. Entry-level technicians earn about $15 per hour. These wages are usually supplemented with hotel accommodations and money for daily expenses when they are on travel for work. Many tower technicians do not work in the occupation long. Some find the work too dangerous, can’t cope with the stress of the climbs, or don’t like the lengthy travel schedule. Others work in the field temporarily while looking for another job. Consequently, experienced tower technicians often earn excellent job security and are competitively recruited by different companies. Many also find that mastering telecommunications line technologies is exciting and rewarding. “Every tower is a completely different challenge,” Billy says, “and a new learning experience.” Billy knows that the risks of being a tower technician might dissuade some people from making a career of it. But for him, the perks of his work outweigh the danger associated with it. He enjoys the travel and the chance to meet many different people at each site and on the road. And most of all, he says, he enjoys using his skills to do important work: “I feel proud to build something that will last and help others.” Article provided by Dennis Vilorio and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nursing Self-care: How to Say No by Elizabeth Scala
As nurses–and then double-whammy–as women, often we put the needs of others before our own. We keep saying “yes” to more and more things, piling up tasks on our already “full” plates. Why is it so hard for us to say “no”? How come we want to try to “do it all”? A couple of things have been showing up lately, which, for me, is a sign that something important is revealing itself. In May I spoke at my local chapter meeting for my nurses association. My topic was on slowing down and checking in at a mind-body-emotion-spirit level to decide on one area for nursing selfcare change. As we went around the room, there was a lot of discussion about saying “yes” to everything, even when we don’t have time. Then, I was a participant on a call about the art of saying “no”. We went through several exercises: how it feels to say “yes” when we
really want to say “no”; saying “no” to ourselves when we want to say “yes” to something; and how it could feel if we said “no” and “yes” when we actually wanted to. These are just two examples of many experiences I have had in the past two months around this concept of saying “no”. As a nurse - and then double-whammy - as a woman, often we put the needs of others before our own. We keep saying “yes” to more and more things, piling up tasks on our already “full” plates. Why is it so hard for us to say “no”? How come we want to try to “do it all”?
I will share from my own experience, as that is what I live and breathe each day, and I am sure that in my words some of you will hear your own stories. So be gentle, read on, and just know that it helps to uncover these uncomfortable tendencies. The more that we can become conscious of what we are doing, the more we can choose to change what we want and don’t want to occur. So how come I find it difficult to say “no”? Prove myself. When I worked on my inpatient psych unit, I was notorious for saying “yes” all of
the time. “Sure, I’ll be on the committee!”, “Of course, I’ll head up that project!”, “Yes, I can work for you…” Reflecting back on what was going on, I realized that I was trying to prove myself to my colleagues, my manager, the physicians, etc. I was looking for them to value me. I was attempting to demonstrate I was important enough to receive their respect and admiration. Instead of looking inward, loving me for who I was, I was looking externally for validation of my worth. Perceptions of others. No one

wants to be labeled as the “mean girl”. We want people to see us as nice, kind, helpful, and friendly. We worry that when we say “no”, other people will not like us… at least I have. I’ve worried that if I don’t do what my co-workers ask of me they will gossip, spread rumors, or look down on me. o one wants to be judged by another human being…but guess what? Those judgments are just the self-critics inside of us. We have the capacity to stand up for ourselves and to do what we know is right (and healthy) for us. Clarity. Maybe part of our saying “yes” all of the time is because we forget to pause and really feel if “yes” is the proper answer. I know I rush into things sometimes without really thinking them through only to find myself halfway through a project and wanting to back out! If we are unclear with ourselves, we may just head for a “yes” answer as a quick decision. Instead of really thinking it through and creating clarity around a situation we jump right in saying “yes” when we are actually unsure... or mean “no.” Missed Opportunity: For me, lately this is huge. As a new business owner, I feel compelled to say “yes” to every little thing that comes my way. What if I say “no” and wind up missing out on a huge opportunity? What if I pass up the next “best thing”? How will I feel if I realize I made the wrong choice? Well guess what? There will always be another opportunity. There will always be someone else asking you to do something. We cannot do it all. In fact, we will burn ourselves out by trying to and compromise our nursing self-care.

On nursing self-care, we have a tendency to take on more and more, even when we really cannot handle much else. We are natural caregivers so it makes sense that we desire to help from a space of compassion. On nursing self-care, we have a tendency to take on more and more, even when we really cannot handle much else. We are natural caregivers so it makes sense that we desire to help from a space of compassion. Yet these tendencies make it common for us to say “yes” when we really want/need to say “no”. Do these sound familiar? “Sure, I can stay late…” “Yes, I can come in to cover…” “No problem. I can help you…” I’ve heard it so often. When I speak with nurses during self-care workshops, they tell me the major barrier that gets in their way is the challenge of saying “no”. They notice that because they always say “yes”, their plates fill up, making time for them non-existent. This affects nurses health in many ways: from digestive issues to sleep disturbances, from stress headaches to high blood pressure, from chronic fatigue to impaired immunity functioning. Yes, our health is impacted by our ability to be in alignment with what is best for us! In addition to the problems we create when we do this, we place our body into a state of confusion and miscommunication. We say “yes” to a request but everything in our minds, bodies, and spirits feels a “no” about it. We cannot fool our “selves”. We may go through the motions to perform the task, but only to create inner turmoil and stress. Have you ever noticed how you feel when this happens? Here’s an example: A colleague calls you on your day off and asks you to work for her. She goes into a long story about how her husband is sick and she has errands to run and there just isn’t time for her to get it all in. She shares more and more details and soon enough you begin to feel bad for her. You worry she will be very unhappy with you if you do not help. But you have a lot going on! Since it’s your day off you already planned to hike with friends, work on your scrap-book, and cook a delicious dinner. You really don’t want to do this. Your body tenses up and pressure builds behind your eyes as you hear yourself say “Yes, I can work. Let me just change some of my plans and I will call the unit…” Yikes! Even reading this vignette I sense a knot in my throat and my breath quickens. How many times do we do things when we really don’t want to? How awful is this for our well-being?

So what are some strategies we can implement that can shift these behaviors? In my last article, I shared some reasons why I find it difficult to say “no.” Below are some tips that speak to those to get your started:
We say “yes” to a request but everything in our minds, bodies, and spirits feels a “no” about it. We cannot fool our “selves.” We may go through the motions to perform the task, but only to create inner turmoil and stress. Things I Consider Before Saying Yes Value me for me. Instead of continuously trying to prove my value to my colleagues, I can look inside for my self-worth. I can create exercises that have me loving myself so I feel empowered to say “yes/no” when I desire. An easy way to begin is to write down three things you are grateful for about yourself at the end of each day. Realizing you embody unique gifts helps you to do less just so that others “recognize” you. Forget about it. Instead of obsessing about what other people might be saying about me, I can just accept the fact that people will judge me. When I realize that I’m a beautiful being with gifts and talents, I release the worries of perceived judgments. It doesn’t matter what other people say. I free up space to say “no” if that’s what I want to do Pause and reflect. Instead of rushing into a “yes”, I take a deep breath and exhale slowly. I can pause before immediately reacting in the way I usually do. I take a moment and answer with clarity. If I can help (and want to) - it is a “yes”. If I feel overburdened, I am relieved to clearly say “no.” Let go. Instead of worrying about a “missed chance” I can relax in the trust that everything happens for a reason. If I have to pass this time, I am glad to know another opportunity will come my way. I don’t have to do it all. I have hope that my path in life reveals itself to me. Travel Nursing Jobs Boost Morale Reports Indicate
O
fficials at the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research report that 30 percent of nurses say they are burned out dissatisfied with their jobs. As a result, more are seeking employment with staffing firms that offer flexible schedules, better wages and perks that benefit career longevity. Many healthcare workers view their careers as more than just a job. But even the most motivated nurses can become bored with the daily routine and frustrated by hospital bureaucracy. Research from the Mayo Clinic advises individuals coping with stress-related job burn out to set new challenges for themselves. Successful strategies include improving job skills, taking on new projects, and breaking up the monotony by exploring new scenery, meeting new co-workers or volunteering for new assignments. Travel nursing jobs are an ideal way to accomplish just that, besides increased earning power. “Travel nurses enjoy more time with family and friends, earn up to 20 percent more and receive free private housing and free insurance,” said Vice President of Recruitment, Mark Kay Hull, for The Joint Commission certified American Traveler. “Travel nursing is an ideal profession for
career nurses suffering from burnout.” While staffing trends at American Traveler show a significant increase in the number of travel nurses age 40 and up, travelers 55 and older comprise nearly ten percent of the travel nurse workforce. Pat, a Registered Nurse for 37 years and mother of six, says travel nursing has reignited her spirit. “Travel nursing is a wonderful way to use your profession to see the country,” she says. “My kids tell me they’re glad the hippie finally came out of me and that I’m traveling and enjoying life to the fullest.” Travel nursing jobs provide a unique opportunity to live in desirable locations and work in world renowned teaching hospitals. Travel nurses have a chance to really get to know their new locale and meet the people who live there. In addition, travel jobs enhance nursing skills by providing exposure to career-enhancing techniques and procedures. Travel nurses are highly regarded by co-workers due to their ability to quickly adapt and become valuable team members. Five Adventurous Nursing Jobs
M
ost people become nurses because they love helping people, and for those who love adventure, there are people to help in some exciting places. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, I think these five nursing jobs are the most exciting I’ve ever seen. If you’re looking for an adventure while maintaining your career, these are the tickets for you.
months per year. Nurses get the same unusual benefits as rig workers – all your meals are provided and your laundry and cleaning is done for you. Your view is generally miles of open ocean and maybe a distant shoreline. Because you’re isolated, you have a lot of autonomy, must make decisions quickly and accurately, and you may only have radio or phone contact with doctors onshore. It’s a challenging job that combines aspects of many normal nursing jobs – first responder, ER, trauma, diagnostics, medication and treatments. You’re responsible for the crew’s overall health. It’s quite an adventure.
1. Oil Rig Nurse
Floating cities – that’s what modern cruise ships are. A cruise ship RN might do anything from administering medication to operating an X-ray machine. Nurses onboard ships are responsible for the general health of thousands of passengers and hundreds of crew members. Nurses are always on call, but the commute from cabin to clinic isn’t bad! Of course, cruise ships tend to travel between the most beautiful locations in the world, and the scenery changes daily. Pay is on the top end of the scale, but time off comes only between cruise periods.
Oil rig nurses work long hours in a crazy environment, but the pay is excellent and the job is usually just six

3. Nursing for Doctors without Borders Nurses for Doctors without Borders (aka. Medecins Sans Frontieres) might literally travel anywhere in the
world. One nurse described her experience working with other medical professionals for Doctors without Borders as, “… there is no hierarchy and everybody is an integral part of the team.” Nurses may be vaccinating hundreds of children one week and working on patients who survived wars the next. Every nursing scenario is covered from OR nursing and clinical work through field and research work. Just don’t expect your living conditions to measure up to your home in the United States – living in a tent and taking a shower from a bucket might be a more common experience. But, you’ll be helping the absolutely neediest people in the world.
4. Flight Nurse If Superman were a nurse, he’d probably be a flight nurse. Traveling at hundreds of miles per hour, while stabilizing and administering care to a patient, requires a super hero’s mentality. Flight nurses must coordinate with EMT’s, doctors and hospitals while transporting patients and ensure quality care is delivered throughout the process. But, in addition to good pay, helping people who are clinging to life is a reward unto itself.
5. Travel Nursing in Alaska

There are thousands of traveling nurse jobs, and they are usually very interesting jobs because you see something different almost every day. Throw that job in amongst the mountains, glaciers, whales, and polar bears of Alaska – well, a travel nurse in Alaska is a hard job to top on the excitement scale. The pay is very high, as well, though it’s partially offset by the high cost of living. RNs can get 3-6 month assignments, save as much of that pay as possible, and head back to the contiguous states well ahead financially. For nurses who love to spend time outdoors hiking, hunting or fishing, this might be the perfect job. MORE THAN PLAY: Three Careers in Sports Sports are more than fun and games; they also provide work for many people. Sports workers earn wages in leagues across the nation. At the professional level, some of these workers earn lucrative salaries and contracts worth millions of dollars. But most sports workers make considerably less. Whether they make a lot or a little, these workers often do their jobs for the love of sport, not for the paycheck.

age and compete in recreational, amateur, or school leagues. Many continue participating into adulthood, either as amateurs or professionals. But some sports workers are enthusiasts who might not have actually played a sport. Jobs for professional athletes are limited, and many people choose to put their sports knowledge to work in different ways. Some, such as coaches and athletic trainers, work closely with athletes; others, including sports officials, work with participants less directly.
Coaches
www.eoejournal.com
A coach helps athletes to develop the physical, technical, and strategic skills they need to play a sport Coaches run practice and training sessions, develop strategies, analyze athletes’ performances, and guide and encourage athletes. “Coaches put athletes in an environment to be successful both on and off the court,” says Anne Kordes, head volleyball coach of a college team in Louisville, Kentucky. Some athletes and teams employ multiple coaches, including head, assistant, and strength and conditioning coaches. Head coaches oversee assistant coaches, plan strategy and drills, and guide players throughout the event. Assistant coaches specialize in specific parts of the game, such as offense or passing in a football game. Strength and conditioning coaches work with athletes to keep them at peak physical condition. This work might include spending time at the
gym lifting weights or doing cardiovascular and stretching exercises. Coaches work together to make the most of a team’s or player’s potential. Kordes, for example, reviews game video and then meets with assistants to prepare for matches. “We come up with a strategy to neutralize the opponents’ strengths and maximize our own,”she says. “My assistants then work with the players to implement the strategy.”Coaches use their knowledge of a sport to develop a training program, often adapting their strategies to fit different athletes’ learning styles. For example, some athletes might learn better by doing, while others learn best by watching video. “I need to first figure out the best way to teach athletes the skills they need to get better,” says Kordes, “so that I’m in a better position to help and motivate them.” Practices give coaches time to teach techniques and skills they want athletes to master. Teaching skills progressively, coaches start with basic drills that gradually become more difficult and lead to mastery of the skill. “We practice a lot of drills to improve technique and conditioning,” says Eric Gehrke, head coach of a high school rowing program in Alexandria, Virginia. Coaches follow established safety procedures to protect the athletes. For example, Gehrke administers a swim test for every prospective team member. He also packs life jackets and checks weather conditions before allowing athletes to go out on the water.

To help keep athletes healthy, coaches also coordinate with athletic trainers and strength and conditioning coaches. Together, the coaches and athletic trainers monitor the physical health of the athletes and modify training exercises and practice drills to accommodate those who have problems. “We want our athletes to play hard on both defense and offense,” says Kordes. “But we need to be aware of their physical limitations to avoid injuring them.” Dealing with athletes, the athletes’ parents, and fans can often be a source of frustration for coaches. For example, a parent might push coaches to give more playing time to his or her child or voice unhappiness with a team’s performance. “You must be patient,”says Gehrke, “because sometimes you have to deal with the parents almost as much as the kids.” But for coaches, working with the athletes is often the most rewarding part of the job. “It’s not all about trophies and honors,” Kordes says. “What makes me proud is mentoring and caring for my kids.” Employment and wages. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) collects data on coaches and scouts together. In May 2011, there were 193,810 wage and salary coaches and scouts, according to BLS. They earned a median annual wage of $28,470. The lowest earning 10 percent made $17,110 or less, and the highest earning 10 percent made $65,060 or more.

Most coaches work in schools, including elementary, secondary, and postsecondary. Coaches at the elementary, middle, and high school levels usually work part time and may coach more than one sport. Some coaches work as teachers, which may require teaching certification. Coaches at the college and professional levels usually work full time as a coach in one sport. Qualifications. As a group, coaches generally do not need formal education to enter the occupation. But they may need certification, depending on the sport and the state in which they seek employment. Experience as an athlete may be enough for coaches seeking employment in elementary, middle, and high schools. It’s still no guarantee of employment, however. “The better your athletic credentials, the easier it is to find a high school coaching job,” says Gehrke. Coaches at the college and professional levels usually need at least a bachelor’s degree as well as experience in the sport. Experience as an athlete also gives coaches extensive knowledge of the sport in which they coach. This experience helps them develop strategies and drills with which to train and develop the athletes. Coaches also learn through observing how others coach. “The more you learn from what other coaches do,” says Gehrke, “the better you’ll be.” Coaches need interpersonal, decision making, and leadership skills to teach their athletes and help them improve. And head coaches also need management and communication skills to lead their staff. “You manage a lot of people, from your assistants to your athletes,” says Kordes. “If you want to be successful, you have to communicate clearly to get everyone pulling together in the same direction.”
Athletic Trainers Athletic trainers keep athletes healthy before, during, and after competition. “We are always on the lookout for potential injuries,” says Charlie Thompson, head of athletic training at a university in Princeton, New Jersey. “We want to deal with problems right away.” Athletic trainers are available during athletes’ training, practices, and play. Their priority is to prevent injuries. To accomplish this, they examine athletes, collect medical histories, and check for preexisting conditions. If an athlete is predisposed to certain injuries, the athletic trainer can try to limit the problem by taking precautions. For a sprinter with tight hamstrings, for example, an athletic trainer might suggest special exercises and stretches to help loosen those muscles before running. Athletic trainers know which injuries are common in specific sports, so they often work with coaches to modify training regimens based on an athlete’s condition. “We can prevent injuries by removing or minimizing specific drills or exercises on days the athletes need a break,” says Thompson. After a hard practice, for example, an athletic trainer would recommend that athletes avoid lower body exercises that might tire out and injure their legs. But the precautions athletic trainers take can’t always prevent an athlete’s injury. When an injury occurs, athletic trainers evaluate its type and severity by considering how the injury happened and by asking the athlete how he or she felt at the time of injury
equal opportunity employment journal and how painful it feels during evaluation. They test the athlete’s range of motion and check muscles and tendons for swelling and tenderness. Depending on the results of the evaluation, the athletic trainer chooses different ways to treat the injury. General treatment includes the uses of first aid, ice to minimize swelling, antiseptics to disinfect cuts, and braces to protect an injured limb. Specific treatments depend on the athletic trainer’s evaluation of an athlete’s injury. For example, if the athlete can put weight on an injured leg and still walk, then icing and wrapping the injured area might be enough until the athlete sees a physician. If the athlete can put weight on the leg but can’t walk, then the athletic trainer can provide crutches. But if the athlete can’t put weight on the leg and feels a lot of pain, then the injury might be more serious—such as a fracture—and the athletic trainer would get the athlete to an urgent-care center or emergency room. For more serious injuries, athletic trainers rely on an athlete’s physician to test, diagnose, and treat injuries. Athletic trainers cannot prescribe medication, take x-rays, or order laboratory tests, for example. At the physician’s discretion, however, athletic trainers may continue to treat minor injuries. Athletic trainers also help athletes recover from injuries. Rehabilitating major injuries usually requires the help of a physical therapist, but athletic trainers may continue treatment when the athlete’s condition has improved. And athletic trainers may need help from physical therapists because of time constraints. “It’s difficult to rehabilitate every injury, because we simply don’t have the time,” says Tricia Irvin, a high school ath-

letic trainer employed by a medical center in Granger, Indiana. Athletic trainers design a program to help each athlete to recover from injury and to regain strength, balance, speed, flexibility, or range of motion. Rehabilitation exercises typically become progressively difficult as the athlete recuperates, such as increasing incline on a treadmill or weight on barbells. Once injured athletes have recovered completely, athletic trainers allow them to compete again. “We want the athlete to return to playing the sport at full functional ability,” says Thompson. When not helping athletes, athletic trainers may manage medical inventory, check the integrity of safety equipment, and track injuries and treatments. Athletic trainers get to know their athletes well and help them develop as both athletes and people. Athletes may turn to them for help with problems at school or at home. “We are almost like parents,” says Thompson. “We listen to their problems and try to guide them in the right direction.” Irvin agrees. “You need to be patient,” she says. Because of budget constraints, not every team employs its own athletic trainer. Sometimes, a single athletic trainer cares for two competing teams or athletes. That’s not a problem, say athletic trainers, because their concern is to ensure the safety and health of all athletes. “We are not rivals, like the schools,” says Irvin. “We are our own team.” Employment and wages. In May 2011, there were 18,240 wage and salary athletic trainers, according to BLS. They earned a median annual wage of $42,400. The lowest earning 10 percent made $26,170 or less, and the highest earning 10 percent made $65,970 or more. Most athletic trainers work full time at postsecondary schools and medical facilities, such as hospitals and medical offices. A few athletic trainers work part time and are paid hourly. Some may work under contract.
Qualifications. To enter the occupation, athletic trainers usually need at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited athletic training program. These programs teach students what they need to know to become an athletic trainer, from injury evaluation to rehabilitation. For a position at the college or professional level, athletic trainers usually need work experience and a master’s degree. Most states require that athletic trainers pass a national certification exam and register for a state license. Additional requirements include continuing education and yearly cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. Every 3 years, athletic trainers must complete 70 hours of continuing education to keep up with advances in the field. Classes, seminars, and lectures help fulfill this requirement. Athletic trainers need to be detail oriented to keep track of athletes’ injuries. They also need good communication and interpersonal skills so they can explain injuries and treatments to athletes and their families.

Sports Officials Umpires, referees, and other sports officials oversee an event’s rules, athletes, and coaches to ensure safe, fair, and neutral play. To keep competitions fair, sports officials enforce the rules, inspect equipment, start and stop play, track the contest’s time, and settle disputes. They may also penalize reckless play or eject unruly players or coaches to keep competition under control. “Our responsibility is to enforce impartially and err on the side of safety,” says Barry Mano, a former sports official and now president of the National Association of Sports Officials in Union Grove, Wisconsin. While working, sports officials place themselves in the best position to watch athletes. If they spot a violation of the rules or need to make a decision that affects play, sports officials rely on their experience and judgment to make the right call. Some

sports officials also have the option to review video. Sports officials use tools to signal to athletes, coaches, and spectators. These include waving colored flags to indicate an infraction, blowing a whistle to stop and start play, or firing blanks from a gun to start a race. Sports officials also frequently use hand signals. For example, a basketball official may raise three fingers while the ball is airborne to signal to scorers that a successful basket will be worth three points. Depending on the sport, there may be one or more officials during play. Individual sports, such as boxing, may need only a single official. Team sports often have multiple officials, each of whom has different duties. For example, in soccer, a main official blows the whistle to start play and stop for infractions, two officials on the sidelines determine offside violations, and another official in the press box keeps track of time. Most sports officials need to wear a uniform. They may also need to wear sport-specific equipment, such as shin guards, watches, skates, or helmets. Sometimes, the equipment and uniform is different for officials in the same sport but in different roles. For example, in baseball and softball, the home plate umpire wears a uniform, face mask, chest pad, and shin guards—but the first base umpire wears only the uniform. Sports officials attend seminars before, during, and after a sport’s playing season to refresh themselves on the rules, learn changes to the rules, and network with other officials and league staff. Mano says that these seminars allow sports officials to become better at their work and help them move up the career ladder. Meetings before and after each game help officials review their calls, evaluate their performances, and learn from mistakes. “It takes practice and hard work to become a better official,” says Rob Livengood, a basketball official in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The priority for sports officials is to make the right call, let the game flow, and intervene only when necessary. “I want to be invisible,” says Livengood. “The focus should be on the game, the players, and the fans.” But officials sometimes make mistakes. When they do—or when they make a correct but controversial call—fans, athletes, and coaches may become critical. Experience, confidence, and humility help sports officials cope with the pressure. “If you listen to the fans, you’ll think you’re the worst official on the planet and need glasses,” says Livengood. “Unless you grow a thick skin, you’ll go home and cry.”

For sports officials, being questioned about the calls they make is part of the job. And when fans air their displeasure at the right call, officials must be confident that their judgment was fair. “You have to love the officiating process more than the sport,” says Mano. “You have to love it when they boo you.” Employment and wages. In May 2011, there were 15,630 wage and salary umpires, referees, and other sports officials according to BLS. They earned a median annual wage of $23,190. The lowest earning 10 percent made $16,910 or less, and the highest earning 10 percent made $50,190 or more. Most sports officials work for leagues in spectator sports, schools, and recreational associations. Anecdotal evidence suggests that most sports officials work part time under contract. Because many sports have playing seasons, some officials may work in multiple sports. Qualifications. No formal education is required to become a sports official. However, prospective sports officials must pass an officiating test to become licensed with their particular association. An association committee evaluates sports officials in scrimmages and assigns them to games based on those performances. Officials may need to be physically fit, depending on the sport. For example, a lacrosse official runs up and down the field numerous times per game, but a tennis official stays in one place for the duration of the match. Communication skills are also important, says Livengood: “You need to work as a team with the other officials and communicate clearly in a potentially hostile environment.” Advancing to more competitive leagues requires experience. For example, an official must work many years at the high school level before being considered for jobs at the college level, where there are fewer games and tougher competition for available positions. Through experience, officials develop what Mano calls “game intelligence,” the ability to manage the competition and its players. Experience also helps officials gain the judgment they need to make the right call—and the confidence to defend it.

says Livengood, “and helps me think strategically, too.” The best way to get started in a sports career is by gaining experience at lower levels of a sport and working your way up. For example, sports workers in recreational leagues can develop their skills under less stress and with more job opportunities. They can also learn from experienced workers by volunteering as assistants. Sports-related jobs are usually available at local schools and with amateur leagues and recreational and athletic associations. Positions for volunteers and for part-time work are often advertised in newspapers and on school, organization, and association websites. Although these positions often pay little or nothing, they offer the opportunity to learn the basics of sports work. Workers can also gain experience by networking through the many leagues available at the amateur and high school levels. The sports community is small, so knowing the right people—such as those who run the leagues—eases the jobseeking process. Family and friends who participate in a sport are also valuable resources. “Good networking produces good results,” says Gehrke. Of course, the demands of a sports career mean it’s not always fun in games. Many sports practices and competitions are held outdoors, including in extreme temperatures and bad weather. Sports workers might need to be outside for hours in those conditions. Sports workers might also have irregular schedules, sometimes working 7 days a week—including evenings, weekends, and holidays—to accommodate sporting events. And although some sports are played seasonally, preparation continues year round. Travel may be frequent, especially at more competitive levels. That can strain personal relationships. “I spend a lot of time away,” says Mano. “It can be tough on family life.”

Finding Work in a Tough Economy
A
s it stands right now the USA is in a tough situation. I’m not just talking about employment, the lack of jobs and how difficult it is to find work, I’m talking about the economic recession which has completely changed the life of the American people.
What does this mean to you within your industry. You went on a sales meeting 6 months ago to ABC Computers as a jobseeker?
At Glatfelter Insurance Group, we believe our success ultimately rests with the people who serve as the face of Glatfelter on a day-to-day basis, our associates. We are committed to providing advancement opportunities for our associates through continuing education and training provided by the company. It really means that you’re going to have to come up with a smart strategy and hope that your competitors for the jobs you are looking at haven’t thought of it first. So what’s a smart strategy for finding work in a tough economy? The simple answer is ‘smart networking’. The fortunate thing about the job search strategy that I’ve just mentioned is that it’s within your grasp, within your capacity to benefit from it, you just need to sit down, plan, then get serious about implementing your goals. Let’s look at it at a basic level. For the purpose of this article lets assume that you are a sales engineer in the computer industry and you wish to continue your career in that direction. Sit down and write a list of all the people you have come into contact with during the course of your work, who are in some sort of professional capacity
and you met and talked with Bob the sales guy, and Jill the customer service rep was in on the discussion too. Can’t remember their last names? call the company and ask. Go through and create a list of 50 names. How far you have to go back to collect these names is irrelevant at this stage, just create the list. So you’ll have a list of 50 people with their names, the company at which they worked and a rough idea of their job title or description. Now create another list of 25 people who you might consider to be in your ‘inner circle’ of contacts. These are ex colleagues and coworkers, managers, hiring agencies who may have helped you in the past, or just close friends who may have connections within your industry. Now you have 75 people on your list. Let me tell you this

This is extremely powerful networking and it will work for you if you’re systematic about your efforts. I even know of one bright spark who followed this system and offered a ‘cash prize’ for the first person who could connect them with a job. Think about it. Tell people you’ll pay them $400 from your first months salary if they can connect you up with an employer. You’d be amazed what that could do to motivate people. ecurities, commodities, and financial services sales agents connect buyers and sellers in financial markets. They sell securities to individuals, advise companies in search of investors, and conduct trades.
Duties • Contact prospective clients to present information and explain available services • Offer advice on the purchase or sale of particular securities • Buy and sell securities, such as stocks and bonds • Buy and sell commodities, such as corn, oil, and gold • Monitor financial markets and the performance of individual securities • Analyze company finances to provide recommendations for public offerings, mergers, and acquisitions
Evaluate cost and revenue of agreements Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents deal with a wide range of products and clients. Agents spend much of the day interacting with people, whether selling stock to an individual or discussing the status of a merger deal with a company executive. The work is usually stressful because agents deal with large amounts of money and have time constraints. A security or commodity can be traded in two ways: electronically or in an auction-style setting on the floor of an exchange market. Markets such as the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation system (NASDAQ) use vast computer networks rather than human traders to match buyers and sellers. Others, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), rely on floor brokers to complete transactions.
The following are some types of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents: Brokers sell securities and commodities directly to individual clients. They advise people on appropriate investments based on the client’s needs and financial ability. The people they advise may have very different levels of expertise in financial matters. Finding clients is a large part of a broker’s job. They must create their own client base by calling from a list of potential clients. Some agents network by joining social groups, and others may rely on referrals from satisfied clients. Investment bankers connect businesses that need money to finance their operations or expansion plans with investors who are interested in providing that funding. This process is called underwriting, and it is the main function of investment banks. The banks first sell their advisory services to help companies issue new stocks or bonds, and then the banks sell the issued securities to investors. Some of the most important services that investment bankers provide are initial public offerings (IPOs) and mergers and acquisitions. An IPO is the process by which a company becomes open for public investment by issuing its first stock. Investment bankers must estimate how much the company is worth and ensure that it meets the legal requirements to become publicly traded. Investment bankers connect companies in mergers (when two companies join together) and acquisitions (when one company buys another). Investment bankers provide advice throughout the process to ensure that the transaction goes smoothly. Investment banking sales agents and traders carry out buy-and-sell orders for stocks, bonds, and commodities from clients and

intermediation and brokerage: 40% Depository credit intermediation: 23% Other financial investment activities: 10% Most securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents work long hours under stressful conditions. The pace of work is fast, and managers are usually demanding of their workers, because both commissions and advancements are tied to sales. Investment bankers travel extensively because they frequently work with companies in other countries. Because computers can conduct trades more quickly than people, electronic trading is quickly replacing verbal auction-style trades on exchange floors. The environment of the stock exchange is changing as a result, with more traders carrying out orders behind a desk and fewer working on the exchange floor. A growing number of securities sales agents, employed mostly by discount or online brokerage firms, work in callcenter environments. In these centers, hundreds of agents spend much of the day on the telephone taking orders from clients or offering help and information on their accounts. Work Environment Most of the major investment banks Securities, commodities, and financial are located in New York City, making services sales agents held about 312,200 employment in the occupation of securijobs in 2010. The following industries employed the ties, commodities, and financial services most securities, commodities, and finan- sales agents concentrated in this metropolitan area. cial services sales agents in 2010: The following metropolitan areas had Securities and commodity contracts make trades on behalf of the firm itself. These workers are primarily employed by investment banks, although some work for commercial banks, hedge funds, and private equity groups. Because markets fluctuate so much, trading is a split-second decision-making process. Slight changes in the price of a trade can greatly affect its profitability, making the trader’s decision extremely important. Floor brokers work directly on the floor—a large room where trading is done—of a securities or commodities exchange. After a trader places an order for a security, floor brokers negotiate the price, make the sale, and forward the purchase price to the trader. Financial services sales agents consult on a wide variety of banking, securities, insurance, and related services to individuals and businesses, often catering the services to meet the client’s financial needs. They contact potential clients to explain their services, which may include checking accounts, loans, certificates of deposit, individual retirement accounts, credit cards, and estate and retirement planning.

Many firms hire summer interns before their last year of college, and those who are most successful are offered full-time jobs after they graduate. Numerous agents eventually get a Master of Business Administration (MBA), which is often a requirement for high-level positions in the securities industry. Because the MBA exposes students to real-world business practices, it can be a major asset for jobseekers. Employers often reward MBA holders with higher-level positions, better compensation, and large signing bonuses.
Training Most employers provide intensive on-the-job training, teaching employees the specifics of the firm, such as the products and services offered. Trainees in large firms may receive technical instruction in securities analysis and selling strategies. Firms often rotate their trainees among various departments to give them a broad understanding of the securities business. Securities and commodities sales agents must keep up with new products and services and other developments. They regularly attend conferences and training seminars.
Licenses Brokers and investment bankers must register as representatives of their firm with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). To obtain the license, potential agents must pass a series of exams. Many other licenses are available, each of which gives the holder the right to sell different investment products and services. Traders and some other sales representatives also need licenses, although these vary by firm and specialization. Financial services sales agents may need to be licensed, especially if they sell securities or insurance. Most firms offer training to help their employees pass the licensing exams. Agents who are registered with FINRA must attend continuing education classes to keep their licenses. Courses consist of computer-based training on legal requirements or new financial products or services.
Certification Although not always required, certification enhances professional standing and is recommended by employers. Brokers, investment bankers, and financial services sales agents can earn the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification, sponsored by the CFA Institute. To qualify for this certification, applicants need a bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related work experience and must pass three exams, which require several hundred hours of self-study. Exams cover subjects in accounting, economics, securities analysis, financial markets and instruments, corporate finance, asset valuation, and portfolio management. Applicants can take the exams while they are getting the required work experience.

Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents usually advance to senior positions in a firm by accumulating a greater number of accounts. Although beginners often service the accounts of individual investors, they may eventually service large institutional accounts, such as those of banks and retirement funds. After taking a series of tests, some brokers become portfolio managers and have greater authority to make investment decisions regarding an account Some experienced sales agents become branch office managers and supervise other sales agents while continu-

Investment banking traders must make split-second decisions with large sums of money at stake. ing to provide services for their own clients. A few agents advance to top management positions or become partners in their firms. Many investment banks use an “up or out” policy, in which entry-level investment bankers are either promoted or terminated after 2 or 3 years. Investment banks use this policy to ensure that entry-level positions are not occupied long term, allowing the bank to steadily bring in new workers.
Important Qualities Customer-service skills. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents must be persuasive and make clients feel comfortable with the agent’s recommendations. Decision-making skills. Investment banking traders must make split-second decisions with large sums of money at stake. Detail oriented. Investment bankers must pay close attention to the details of initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions because small changes can have large consequences. Initiative. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents must create their own client base by making “cold” sales calls to people to whom they have not been referred and to people not expecting the call. Math skills. To judge the profitability of potential deals, financial services sales agents must have strong math skills.
Pay The median annual wage of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents was $70,190 in May 2010. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $31,330, and the top 10 percent earned more than $166,400. Many securities and commodities brokers earn a commission based on the monetary value of the products they sell. Most firms pay brokers a minimum salary in addition to commissions. Trainee brokers usually earn a salary until they develop a client base. The salary gradually decreases in favor of commissions as the broker gains clients. Investment bankers in corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions generally earn a base salary with the opportunity to earn a substantial bonus. At higher levels, bonuses far exceed base salary. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents usually work full time and many work more than 40 hours per week. In addition, they may work evenings and weekends because many of their clients work during the day. Call centers often
operate 24 hours a day, requiring agents to work in shifts.
Job Outlook Employment of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents is expected to grow 15 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The financial services industry experienced some consolidation because of the recent financial crisis, but the industry has resumed growth. Overall, employment in the finance and insurance industry is expected to grow by 14 percent from 2010 to 2020. Financial regulation, including restrictions on proprietary trading, may create a shift of employment among traders from investment banks to hedge funds, however, overall employment growth for the occupation should not be affected. Services that investment bankers provide, such as helping with initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions, will continue to be in demand as the economy grows. The United States remains an international financial center, meaning that the economic growth of countries around the world will contribute to employment growth in the American financial industry. In addition, employment growth should be particularly strong for commodities brokers and traders. Trading in commodities markets has increased substantially in recent years, driven by large group investors, such as retirement funds, entering the market. As the number of transactions increases in commodities trading, such as oil futures, employment of commodities sales agents will increase to meet this demand. Although employment growth for securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents as a whole is expected to be strong, the use of online stock trading sites will restrict growth for stock brokers. As clients themselves conduct transactions online, the need for stock brokers will diminish.
Job Prospects The high pay associated with securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents draws many more applicants than there are openings. Therefore, competition for jobs is intense. Certification and a graduate degree, such as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification and a master’s degree in business or finance, can significantly improve an applicant’s prospects. For entry-level jobs, having an excellent grade-point average (GPA) in college is important. Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Visit www.bls.gov for more information.

Helmets to Hardhats Helmets to Hardhats is a national program that connects National Guard, Reserve and transitioning active-duty military members with quality career training and employment opportunities within the building and construction industry. The program is designed to ease the difficult passage into civilian life for military families, providing the best career opportunities, pay, and benefits to those who have earned the nation’s support through their years of service.
T
he program collects career opportunities from the nationwide building and construction trades and works to provide former military personnel with that data. Candidates can access information about careers and apprenticeships via the Internet from anywhere in the world. To apply for work or membership, candidates complete a comprehensive profile that helps hiring managers determine what transferable skills they acquired during their military service. Once a candidate finds and submits interest in a career opportunity, otherwise known as a digital handshake, they are contacted by a Helmets to Hardhats representative to ensure all application requirements are met. Helmets to Hardhats is co-sponsored by all fifteen Building and Construction Trades organizations, as well as their employer associations, which together represent about 82,000 contractors. Labor leaders have embraced the program, eager to help military personnel transfer their experience into secure careers within the construction industry. “Together, the military and the construction trades have Your Safety Is Our Business built America over the past several hundred years with the Learn more about us online at: Meggitt PLC is a global engineering group specializing in same kind of sweat, equity, commitment and courage,” extreme environment components and smart sub-systems for www.meggitt.com aerospace, defense and energy markets. Frequently Asked Questions The following FAQ questions will help you learn more about this program:
What is Helmets to Hardhats? Making a successful transition from the military into the civilian workforce can be difficult. Transitioning military veterans face the same challenges as any other job hunter – getting their résumé to the right people, learning how to sell themselves, tracking down promising leads, following-up with employers, headhunters, job placement agencies... etc. Not many people are comfortable with this process and veterans have the added stress of trying to translate the skills they learned in the military into language that civilian employers can understand. The process can feel overwhelming, especially if it seems like meaningful help is unavailable.

H2H is not a union-only program but we require employers to participate in proven apprenticeship training programs that are registered and approved by applicable federal and state authorities. In addition, we seek to ensure that transitioning veterans are provided with wages and benefits that allow them to maintain an appropriate standard of living in the community where the career is located. The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for transitioning veterans to obtain the necessary training in a particular craft in order to obtain a quality career in the construction industry, not just a one-time job until the end of a particular project. H2H encourages all responsible employers who have construction-related career opportunities to apply for acceptance into our program.
How do you Ensure That Quality Employer Careers are Listed? Employers that are members of the H2Happroved contracting associations will register and have immediate access to advertise opportunities online. Employers that are not members must meet certain criteria before they can advertise trade opportunities on the H2H Web site. These criteria include access to a quality and federally-recognized registered apprentice program, a permanent system to ensure employment and training opportunities, formal curriculum and instructor training programs, related training and an on-the-job training program, an affirmative action program, and a positive record of caring for the welfare of workers as evidenced by health insurance, pension benefits and workers’ compensation coverage. Employers who want to advertise construction-related employment opportunities must ensure that they provide wages and benefits in keeping with the high standards of the other member employers. If, at any time, H2H is notified that an employer is not advertising acceptable opportunities, the employer will be removed from the H2H system.
How Do Employers Benefit from Helmets to Hardhats? Employers who qualify for the H2H program gain access to a pool of construction industry career seekers who are hardworking, drug-free, safety-conscience and highly dependable. Also, the H2H Web site provides many great tools for employers to help them locate career seekers who have special skills. Do you need someone with underwater welding experience? Would you like to interview a military EMT with frontline field experience who is now considering a civilian career in Construction Safety and Health? H2H candidates possess specialized training, hands-on experience and professional discipline that you simply cannot find in the regular workforce. All H2H career seekers are required to fill out detailed information before accessing the site, making it easy to eliminate inappropriate candidates based on career specifications and to locate candidates with desired skills. The Web site also offers a letter creation tool to easily communicate with qualified applicants and an opt-in email feature that will send resumes that meet your specific criteria directly to your inbox. After posting a career, employers can also adjust the criteria to increase or decrease the number of applications they are receiving. Employers can choose to just receive resumes, career seeker’s creening answers, or a screening score in the subject of the email.
Can I Use My Montgomery G.I. Bill And Other Educational Funding Entitlements? Federally-recognized joint labor-management apprenticeship programs are highquality, well-resourced training programs that are accredited by Regional Education Certifying Councils and Boards. This educational certification is what qualifies the apprenticeship program for the use of the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, the Montgomery G.I. Bill or various state, National Guard or Reserve educational funding programs. These educational benefits, and some state programs, normally pay qualified apprentices a monthly stipend in addition to their earned wages. Rates will vary depending on type of service and length of training. The current rates can be found at www. gibill.va.gov.

who has been hired. However, we do request placement information from our career providers and receive many calls from veterans thanking us for connecting them to great new career. Since 2007, we’ve confirmed the successful placements of almost 6,000 military veterans into quality careers in the building and construction trades via the H2H program.
How Much Will I Get Paid? A wide variety of career opportunities are listed on our Web site; therefore, we cannot say how much you will be paid. Your career provider determines your pay. However, H2H works diligently to list only careers that offer family-supporting wages and benefits.
How Long Does it Take for me to Get a Job After Applying? The pace of the hiring process is determined by the career provider. We do suggest that you follow-up with the career provider after forwarding your profile to ensure receipt and to get further instructions on how the application process works.
The program is open to all service members regardless of rank, but because most of the positions on our Web site are apprenticeship opportunities, more enlisted personnel have joined the H2H program. What is Direct Entry? The implementation of a statewide direct entry program gives former and active military personnel the opportunity to quickly start quality construction careers soon after they apply for them through H2H. Once the state proclamation is signed, it allows all JATCs and locals (at their discretion) to immediately accept these men and women into their apprenticeship programs and provide them with credit for their military training and experience. Direct entry language can also be implemented on an individual local level. Currently, 30 states have issued an official proclamation or declaration supporting the H2H Direct Entry Program.
Do You Get a Majority of Enlisted Service People or Officers? The program is open to all service members regardless of rank, but because most of the positions on our Web site are apprenticeship opportunities, more enlisted personnel have joined the H2H program. Nevertheless, a quick review of the H2H career listings will show that we also provide many construction-related professional careers that are well-suited for transitioning officers.
Do You Place People in Jobs Based on Their Military Experience? H2H is not a placement company. We refer candidates to quality career providers and refer quality career providers to qualified candidates. To apply for a career posting or entry into an apprenticeship program, H2H program users must complete a comprehensive profile that helps hiring managers and training directors determine what transferable skills they acquired during their military service. Prior to acceptance into the trades, candidates often are required to take an aptitude test to assess their skill level. For more information, visit www.HelmetsToHardhats.org
