French diver and photographer Laurent Ballesta spent a full 28 days underwater on his latest expedition in the Mediterranean. He wanted to avoid the time-consuming decompression process and have more time for research and taking photos, so he decided to live, along with three other divers, for just under a month in a tiny diving capsule that replicated the same pressure conditions as the sea floor. Within this capsule, they were submerged at 20 different locations in the Mediterranean Sea. At the end of these four weeks, it was time for the four divers to rise to the surface and emerge from the capsule—and be amazed! Laurent Ballesta captured stunning photos of the intricate world at the bottom of the sea, and we are very happy to be able to share these fascinating images with you on the International OCEAN FILM TOUR Volume 8, along with many other exciting stories! After our film tour had to take a break for a year, it also feels as if we have finally emerged—and we are so looking forward to seeing you again, OCEAN LOVERS! YOUR INT. OCEAN FILM TOUR TEAM

MADE TO BE REMADE Wear it down, then return it. We grind it, shred it and turn into something new. The end of one product is the beginning of the next. This is made for performance. THIS IS MADE TO BE REMADE.
A CIRCULAR FUTURE - THE END OF ONE PRODUCT IS THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT Be it shoes or garments, Made To Be Remade products are the very first products for which we have developed an end-of-life solution, where we can ensure that once returned, those products will be remade into something new. Until we can innovate virgin plastic out of our production process altogether, limiting its use to the minimum amount possible is the goal. By focusing on circularity, we are working towards a world where products are made to be remade, not thrown away. Our take on circularity — Made To Be Remade (MTBR) — includes apparel and footwear. The MTBR products like the Terrex Free Hiker Made To Be Remade represents a revolution in product development and manufacturing by moving towards a circular system. We’re moving towards new ways of returning and remaking. Products Made To Be Remade, not thrown away. Wear it out. Send it back. We’ll remake it. The end of one product becomes the beginning of the next. Returned apparel can be turned into brand new yarn, which can then be used to knit the next cycle of MTBR products. As for footwear, each returned pair is cleaned and shredded. The resulting raw materials are collected and used to produce different parts of the shoe. Once assembled, the loop closes and a new generation is born.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Made To Be Remade is made to be worn as usual and as often as possible while running, hiking and working out. By scanning the QR code on the garment or shoe, or by opening the adidas app, the return process is started. The item can then be easily returned. The returns are broken down into the materials that can be reused to make a new Made To Be Remade piece again.
THE TERREX FREE HIKER MADE TO BE REMADE The TERREX Free Hiker Made To Be Remade is our contribution to help end plastic waste. A shoe that is made to be worn and remade into something new. No compromise on performance. The incredible energy return of adidas Boost is created by fusing together energy capsules, giving you the power to keep your feet moving. Moving towards a circular system, using a TPU outsole that is recyclable. Making it the first TERREX hiking shoe that is made to be remade.
INNOVATION IS OUR SOLUTION On the journey toward circularity, adidas is committed to making a difference. By 2024, we will have replaced all virgin polyester with recycled polyester wherever possible. By 2025, carbon neutrality will be achieved throughout our own retail and operations and by 2050, throughout our supply chain as well. With a long road ahead, it is up to all of us to make a change and shape a future where the environment is given precedence. Pivoting to circular production process is a great place to start.
STORM RIDE
In 2020/21, Boris Herrmann became the first German to take part in the legendary Vendée Globe, and despite a collision shortly before the finish line, he still managed to take fifth place. The Vendée Globe is considered the toughest single-handed regatta in the world. We talked to Boris about the race and its challenges.

Boris, you had already successfully circumnavigated the globe four times in a sailboat before taking part in the Vendée Globe in 2020/21. What was your strategy for this race? I sailed rather cautiously. I didn't want to be adrift in the Southern Ocean with a broken mast or other major damage. I am not a do-or-die sportsman. Maybe sometimes that can lead to quicker success, but when it doesn't, you can end up like Kevin Escoffier whose boat broke right in half. You were involved in his rescue operation. Had you ever experienced anything like that before? No, never. This was the first time. And it was a really unsettling experience because I was confronted with how big and how fierce the ocean truly is. It's not easy to understand what actu-
ally happened. If the mast breaks, it's pretty much because you sailed too hard. But it's very, very uncommon for a boat to just break apart. How well did you know your boat, the “Seaexplorer”? Did you feel confident sailing it? I knew every screw and every sail thread. I had already sailed the boat for a really long time beforehand, for a total distance greater than that of the Vendée Globe. I've crossed the Atlantic ten times, once even with Greta Thunberg. In the race, you have to sail the entire route alone, without advice from your team. What's it like when you meet your competitors along the way? If you're within sight, then you do talk to each other via VHF radio. And, all our cell phones are connected to a satellite via the onboard WLAN,
VENDÉE GLOBE The Vendée Globe is a nonstop single-handed regatta. It is considered the toughest sailing race in the world. Both start and finish are in France. The route leads once around the globe, through the Roaring Forties that batter the Southern Ocean. There is a wide protection zone around Antarctica and the icebergs floating near its coastline, where skippers are not allowed to sail.

so almost all the skippers were part of a WhatsApp group, except for the top favorites, and everyone texted something or posted a joke. Still, most of the time you had no one to talk to. Did it help to capture the experience on your phone? Absolutely. I always felt a bit refreshed afterwards. You make a few attempts at recording something; it doesn't cost anything, and if what you say comes across as too grumpy, then you try again in a nicer way. And you smile. You essentially force yourself to be a little more positive, and that provides a better mindset for the rest of the day. Did you discover new facets of yourself during these 80 days at sea? When you get into a situation like this and have no other options, you discover how much
strength your body and mind can still mobilize and that you can push your limits so much farther. That is an exciting experience—that you can sleep so interruptedly for weeks and months, with never more than two hours at a time, and that you can be so constantly physically active. You simply have to do everything yourself. It's incredibly fascinating and never gets boring. Your team is in the process of building a new boat for the next Vendée Globe. Do you think it will give you a better chance of winning? The funny thing is that, at the moment, many of the top participants in the last Vendée Globe are building new boats! Postponing the competition for four years raised it to a higher level, so we're all starting from scratch. To finish fifth again would be a huge success.

Underwater noise, plastic pollution, overfishing, animal welfare issues—there is much to do for marine conservationists. We are so grateful that you do not turn a blind eye to these problems but help us find and implement solutions. As a small gift, we will send you a stunning digital image every month of a marine animal to download for your desktop and mobile wallpaper. You will be surprised, you will laugh, and sometimes maybe even cry—for joy, of course! We look forward to sharing these moments of happiness with you, drawing strength from them to achieve our great goal: the protection of marine animals.
The Surfrider Foundation Europe is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to protect and showcase the importance of lakes, rivers, oceans, waves, and coastlines. It was founded in 1990 by a group of surfers who wanted to defend their playground. Today, it has more than 13,000 members and is active in 12 countries through its volunteer local chapters. The organization has become a reference in the fight to protect the ocean and its users, with passion and commitment on the ground. Surfrider Foundation Europe has become a recognized authority in three areas of expertise: Marine Litter, Water Quality and Health, and Coastal Protection and Climate Change.

Every minute, a truckload of waste ends up in the oceans and poses a danger to humans, animals, and the environment. The transport route for this material is often rivers, referred to as plastic highways. The startup everwave is putting a stop to this by removing trash from rivers worldwide and recirculating it back into the system through environmentally sustainable recycling. AI-supported garbage collection boats and stationary river platforms have been put into operation to collect the waste. The objective is to initiate a holistic change. All OCEAN LOVERS can do their part by supporting everwave in collecting waste from rivers: 1 Euro = 1kg less waste in the water.
Poachers plunder marine sanctuaries with impunity, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing goes unchecked in the high seas, far from the eyes of international authorities and public scrutiny. International laws and agreements exist to protect ocean wildlife and marine habitats, but they can be difficult to enforce because of a lack of political will, insufficient economic resources, or transnational boundaries that blur jurisdiction. Where a law enforcement vacuum exists, Sea Shepherd acts to fill that void.
Fish form shoals because they can achieve more as a community. This is the spirit behind the German Ocean Foundation. In cooperation with many ocean initiatives, we can make a difference. In our Ocean Competition project, young researchers learn about the fascination of the oceans on the research vessel ALDEBARAN. At the Ocean Festival in Berlin, we form a highly visible swarm in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development of the Intergovernmental Commission on Oceans of UNESCO. We support initiatives within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNESCO) and are looking for further partners who want to join.
Sharkproject is a conservation organization founded in 2002 that is dedicated to the welfare of over 500 shark species and the marine ecosystem. The entire staff works on a voluntary basis, and all donations directly benefit shark protection projects and related educational and informational outreach work. Sharkproject International is the parent organization and currently has national affiliates in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Since 2016, Sharkproject has been a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world's largest network for environmental and species protection.

INTO THE ICE
In Greenland, glaciologist Alun Hubbard seeks to elicit answers from the ice.
WHAT THE ICE KNOWS
Photo: Lars H. Ostenfeld
We know that the earth's climate is changing. Temperatures are rising and, along with them, so are sea levels. Our glaciers are retreating. Large volumes of water that were bound in the ice for thousands of years are now being released. How exactly does this process affect rising sea levels? No one knows for sure. While there are many theories, there is too little firm data. Glaciologist Alun Hubbard is determined to rectify this. For the past 15 years, he has spent three months a year on glacier expeditions
collecting data. He is particularly fascinated by moulins, or glacier mills. Like sinkholes that dissolve the bedrock of the earth's crust, moulins are huge well-like cavities that are formed when meltwater streams on the surface of the glacier find a crevasse or weak spot and begin to pour down through the ice. This torrent can rapidly descend all the way to the bottom of the glacier, hundreds of meters deep, and ultimately accelerate the disintegration of the ice sheet. It is here, deep in the glacier, that the answers to the scientist's questions reside.
