From the Wheelhouse Inspiration and enthusiasm for our maritime heritage

By Samuel E. Johnson • Executive Director, Columbia River Maritime Museum
Deputy Director
The dynamic, fascinating story of the Pacific Northwest is a maritime story. From earliest pre-contact times to the present, the Columbia River, its tributaries and the North Pacific Ocean have been integral to the evolving cultures, settlements, technology and trade of the peoples of our region. 60 years after Rolf Klep’s vision for a maritime museum near the mouth of the Columbia River first became a reality, it continues to inspire us. We continue to push forward, expanding Klep’s original vision to inspire our visitors with enthusiasm, curiosity, and appreciation for our maritime heritage, through excellence in collections, exhibits and programming. As we prepare to cut the ribbon on our newest exhibit, Shipwrecks!, work continues on the next exhibit Cedar and Sea – The Maritime Culture of the Indigenous Coastal People of the Pacific Northwest. And finishing touches are being put on the Lightship Columbia, 60 years after Rolf Klep’s vision for newly restored and ready to captivate a maritime museum near the mouth our visitors for decades to come. We are committed to serving our of the Columbia River first became community, including underserved a reality, it continues to inspire us. populations, in ways that go well beyond the exhibit walls. We reach nearly 15,000 students annually through school and museum programming, and plan to expand our reach even further. We are proud to maintain our campus as a beautiful, park-like setting open to the public. Our total number of members are at a record high, and we deeply appreciate the support those numbers reflect. We thank our visitors and members for their continued interest in the Museum. We have more stories to tell, more artifacts to share, and we will continue to evolve the Museum in ways that will continue to inspire well into the future. Whether you have visited recently or not, I invite you to come and see our newest exhibit, and the restored lightship, this summer. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

Where we started
This 1975 final concept drawing of the new museum was illustrated by Rolf Klep. Klep had created many different concepts, including this image, which is amazingly accurate in many details to the museum and campus today as seen in the drone photograph at right taken in 2021.
Where we started
The Columbia River Maritime Museum was established in Astoria on May 11, 1962 by Rolf Klep and a group of supporters. It first occupied the Astoria City Hall (now the Clatsop County Historical Society) and moved to its present site on the banks of the Columbia River in 1982. The main building was remodeled in 2002. The Museum was the first Oregon museum to be accredited by the American Association of Museums (now “I have been a wharf rat all my life”, called the American Alliance of Museums) and is the State said Klep in explaining his role of Oregon’s Official Maritime Museum. as the President and founder of the “I have been a wharf rat all my life”, said Klep in explaining Columbia River Maritime Museum. his role as the President and founder of the Columbia River Maritime Museum. As we celebrate the Museum’s 60th year, we take this opportunity to reflect on a man and his vision, and how that vision has evolved and contributed to Astoria and the region.

The Museum has not had any operational debt in its 60 year history. Projects have generally been completed on a pay-as-you-go basis. Since 2009, in addition to numerous small projects (less than $50,000), there have been six large special projects: the Pilot Boat Peacock project ($440,000), the Depot Restoration/Barbey Maritime Center project ($2,560,914), the Astoria Builders Supply/Maritime Heritage Resource Center Project ($2,772,898), the North Coast Auto/Depot Commons and Warnock Pond project ($1,716,983), and the Lightship Columbia Restoration ($1,151,256). Roughly one-third of the cost of each of these projects came from the Board of Trustees, Foundation grants and other individual donors. The Museum has an operating budget of $2.9 million in 2022. Sources of Operational Support: Memberships (Corporate & Individual): 10%, Unrestricted Gifts: 6%, Endowment Income: 11%, Admissions: 52%, Museum Store: 21%, Other: 1%.
Governance The Museum’s Board of Trustees included 35 voting members, 3 emeritus trustees, and 6 advisory trustees. Trustees are drawn widely from Oregon, Washington and other states. Members of the Advisory Board are individuals who have special expertise of value to the Museum but are unable to assume full board responsibility. These 35 trustees participate in 11 standing committees, including Klep Trust and the CRMM Endowment Boards. The Board meets 5 times a year – January, March, May, September, and at the Annual Meeting in November.

Collections & Research Library The Museum’s Collections are the foundation for all its programs and adding to the Collections is fundamental to the mission. Since 2012, the Museum added more than 1,344 artifacts from 399 donations to its Collections, including regionally significant boats, a superb collection of model freighters from the 1920s and 1930s and a collection of restored marine engines, many of which were made in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. This brought the total artifacts preserved to more than 40,000 including ship models, marine carvings, paintings, navigational instruments, fishing gear, boats, and marine engines. The Museum presently holds 65 boats, some of which are on display inside the main building and outside on the Museum campus. The Ted M. Natt Research Library, housing more than 45,725 items, is one of the largest collections of maritime archival material in the Pacific Northwest. Over the last 10 years more than 6,000 books, logs, maps, charts, and historical business records have been added to its collection. Two extensive photograph collections brings the number of photographs now archived to just under 30,000. Material is added constantly. The librarian continually adds new titles to the Museum library catalog. Currently we have 14,091 titles in our library and 12,114 records uploaded to the World Catalog, making them searchable from anywhere in the world. The World Cat is the world’s largest network of library content and services. It includes two billion items from more than 10,000 libraries worldwide.
Wishing the Columbia River Maritime Museum a Very Happy Anniversary. Congrats on 60 Years!

Education The Museum exists to impart knowledge, stimulate curiosity, and provoke questions. It is, overall, an institution of learning. The Museum, through partial funding from the Northwest Stem Hub, provides free bus transportation to visiting schools from three counties in Oregon. The Museum also provides free admission for all public schools in Clatsop County. The Education Department offers two highly popular Museum Outreach programs – Museum in the Schools (MITS) and the Miniboat Program. • 10 Years Ago: the Museum educated 15,000 kids with the MITS program and 800 local students participated in field trip programs at the Museum with 2 educators on staff • 8 Years Ago: the Museum dropped the MITS program and had 2 educators on staff • 6 Years Ago: the Education Department developed STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) programs for schools visiting the Museum called Learning Labs and reinstated MITS, reaching 8,000 students per year with 2 educators on staff. • 5 Year Ago: the Miniboat program was added, providing a global, multidisciplinary learning experience for 5th to 8th graders in the Pacific Northwest and Japan. • 3 Years Ago: a 3rd educator was added and the department has created Senior Programs and an array of digital content. • In 2022: the Museum’s educators will reach over 10,000 students with direct education programs • Coming Fall 2022: the Museum will add a 4th educator and the sky will be the limit!

Community Engagement/DEAIB CRMM formed a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility and Belonging (DEAIB) task force in 2021, with the mission to examine our current environment, identify new areas to improve, develop a plan of action and then budget and implement new initiatives. The task force is committed to making the Museum’s collections, buildings, programs, and services available to all visitors. Good progress has been made including adding an Accessibility page to the website, which provides information on completed initiatives such as Admission Access programs, accessible building features, exhibit video subtitles, self-guide audio, tactile and verbal description tours, visit guides including a sensory map and social story, and sensory backpacks available for free rental at the Admissions Desk.
Where we are headed
Where we are headed
In the next five years we will focus on new major exhibits, programs and achieving financial stability. Our overall goal is to acquire more vessels, secure additional boat storage, and put more boats and artifacts on display. Cedar and Sea, an exhibit that explores the maritime culture of the Indigenous coastal people of the Pacific Northwest, is in development with a targeted opening in 2024. The heart of this exhibit is a story of innovation … the ways in which Indigenous peoples live and harvest the forest, land and sea and how those ways are rooted in the natural cycle of life. Also in the first stages of development, River of Gold: Cargo and Commerce Past to Present. We welcome you to join us on our continuing journey.
