The official Saturday cruise highlights the communities of the Peninsula’s north end, starting at the Beach Barons’ Wilson Field. Leaving the south end of the field cruise cars will turn right onto Sandridge Rd. as needed to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Another right turn will be made on 250th Pl. to U St. then onto Ocean Park and Surfside through the historic village of Oysterville and Nahcotta and back to Ocean Park.

Starting as early as Thursday but reaching a crescendo on Saturday before receding Sunday, unofficial cruising is a fun and exciting activity up and down U.S. Highway 101/Pacific Avenue.

With so many cars and people in close proximity, it’s important to obey all traffic laws and follow the Rod Run cruise signs. Resist the temptation to burn rubber or engage in other tomfoolery that might place spectators or vehicle occupants at risk. Don’t plan on getting anywhere in a hurry on this jam-packed weekend — passing the car in front of you won’t accomplish Someanything.see Rod Run as an opportunity for a farewell-to-summer party, cheering the cruisers on with red plastic cups in hand. But the men and women who have invested tens of thousands of dollars in their lovingly restored rides tend to take the event much more seriously. From Friday evening until Sunday afternoon, they stand at attention by their Bel-Airs and Mustangs and Darts and Model-Ts, with chamois cloths in hand, ready to spitshine at a moment’s notice.

As early as Thursday evening, spectators begin setting up tents and RVs in relatives’ yards and staking out good curb-side seats for the traditional Friday and Saturday evening cruises in Long Beach.

The Peninsula’s annual Rod Run weekend is a loud, proud tribute to the golden age of American car Car-loversmanufacturing.from all over the West roar into town to take part in one of the largest hot-rod shows on the West Coast, for a weekend of car shows, cruises, and annual events.

There are more than 800 official Rod Run entries at Ocean Park’s Wilson Field, plus many who bring pet vehicles to the beach for informal cruises and showing off.

Each year, the club endeavors to build an engine slightly different from the previous one. This year is no different. They started with a 4 bolt main GM 350 cubic inch ZZ 1 motor. They honed the cylinders and decked the block. The block was magnafluxed for cracks and then coated. The freshly prepped block was sent to the club’s shop for final assembly. Interior components are GM crankshaft, pistons and rods, rings, bearings, cam and lifters, and top-name manufacturers like Howards and Comp Cams.

Club members will gladly start the engine so you can hear it run. There also will be on hand a complete book of photographs and description of the build. Be sure to stop by the booth and purchase a ticket to win this year’s engine. Tickets are $5 with only 4,000 tickets will be sold. If you win you will have your choice of the engine or $2,000. You don’t need to be present to win.

The Slow Drag competition on the Ilwaco waterfront has become a hugely popular start to the weekend of car-related festivities headlined by the great Rod Run to the End of the World in Ocean Park.

Classic cars, hot rods and rat rods are all welcome, so long as they are visually interesting, nonpolitical and family-friendly. They must be street legal with working brake Racinglights.starts

on Howerton Way at the Port of Ilwaco at 5 p.m. Vehicle owners check in earlier and practice at 3 p.m. To race, two cars line up, accelerate to 20 mph then shift to neutral. The late Max Morehouse, beloved U.S. Navy veteran and Edsel enthusiast, is credited with dreaming up a memorable name: The Rod Run to the End of the World.

The Beach Barons existed in the 1950s. When the Ocean Park Chamber of Commerce sought a new event to lure visitors in 1963, Morehouse and Bob Langendorfer suggested a car show; Morehouse came up with the name. Some 68 vehicles attended the first year; so far, 400 are registered this year, with several hundred more expected.

In 1982 the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce looking for ideas to encourage visitors to the north end of our Peninsula approached Bob Langendorfer and Max Morehouse, two local car buffs. They came up with the idea of a car show. With Max’s suggestion of “The Rod Run to the End of the World” as a name, the show was bom. A total of 68 custom cars arrived that first year on Labor Day weekend. The following year 120 attended. With this growing interest someone suggest reforming the old car club using the Beach Barons name.

During the 1950s, the Beach Barons Car Club was formed by a bunch of local fellows involved in street racing flat head Fords, small block Chevys, and a few Oldsmobile powered hot rods. The club flourished during its first years. The “Hangout” was Ferguson’s Richfield gas station in Long Beach near the intersection of 8th Street and Pacific Highway. But times changed, people moved away, and the Beach Barons Car club slipped into the annuals of history.

The first few years the event was held on the field across from the Ocean Park School at Roy Sheldon Field. With the growing number of spectators and participants in 1986 the show was moved to the old Klipsan Airport. In 1991 with 700 entries and the first engine raffle, the Beach Barons were faced with finding another location and a lease was signed for the field on “U” Street. Again in 1998 with 1,500 entries the Beach Barons were forced to find a bigger location. They were also asked to move their event to another weekend due to the number of participants and spectators. In 1999 the show was held on the current Wilson Field and on the weekend after Labor Day. On Oct. 27, 2001, Beach Barons gathered at celebrate paying off the mortgage on 27-acre Wilson Today,Field. the End of the World Rod Run is recognized throughout the Northwest as a premier car show lasting two days hosting over 800 cars. Club members take pride in planning and presenting a show that offers tourists an exciting event — one they look forward to coming back to each year. The club gives an enormous amount of support and recognition to the businesses in the area promoting tourism on the peninsula and the neighboring cities. They donate to local groups, charities and sponsor scholarships.
