S WE HEAD INTO the “Fall of

uncertainty”, after the “Summer of ‘Oh crap it’s not over?’ ”, I’d like to send out a big ol’, heartfelt thank you to all those who make the KMUN world go round. There is so much light in this world, so much generosity and community spirit, and it manifests on a regular basis here at KMUN . You’ll find it in the Tillicum House, you’ll find it on our radio shows and you’ll find it in the homes of every one of our supporters. Homes like yours!

Speaking of Cannon Beach, Gray Haertig, our consulting engineer for all things radio frequency, donated his labor for the installation and configuration of the Cannon Beach translator project. The Tillicum Foundation is tax-exempt and all gifts, grants, and contributions to it are tax deductible to the extent of the law. KMUN broadcasts 5000 watts of power at 91.9MHz from its main transmitter on Megler Mountain, 250 watts at 89.3 from a translator located in Cannon Beach, and 10 watts at 104.3 from a translator in Wheeler and 91.3 from a translator serving Astoira’s south slope. KTCB broadcasts 400 watts of power at 89.5 MHz from Cape Meares, serving Tillamook County. Tillicum Foundation also operates a second program service. Policy for the People is a collaborative production from the Oregon Center for Public Policy (OCPP) and our friends over at KMUZ in the Willamette Valley. OCPP is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to use research and analysis to advance policies and practices that improve the economic and social opportunities of all Oregonians. This show explores the public policies that can lift up all Oregonians. Hear it monthly on KMUN ! LIVE RADIO UPDATE

We’re slowly, steadily, safely chipping away at our schedule, working hard to bring LIVE hosts back to our airwaves. Our pandemic protocols are in place, and our volunteers are getting reacquainted with the air room, bringing you that special magic that comes with live radio! Our hope is to be back to (mostly) live by mid-winter, but of course we will be keeping our finger on the pulse, with our staff and volunteers’ safety as the number one priority. A huge shoutout goes to every single one of our volunteers, who have been making this whole radio thing happen in strange circumstances since last spring, and in style! We would be dead air and peanuts without you.

What’s New in the KMUN News Department E’RE HEADING INTO A new year at KMUN , and with it, some exciting

changes and surprises taking shape.

Plans are in the works to make a big shift at

KMUN next year: the station is seeking new faces

to take over reporting and hosting duties in our news department.

These changes are all good things – part of the intentional shift to a younger generation of staff who will carry the station on into the future. And offering new opportunities and time for those of us who are shifting gears a bit. We’re fortunate to have great people on staff who love radio and want to journey forward with it.

For fans of the Ship Report – I’ll keep doing I’ve been working with KMUN in many roles for that show as a volunteer, so you’ll continue to about 20 years - volunteer, reporter, news director hear me in that time slot, bringing you the scoop on maritime topics. I’m already planning new and manager, and I think it’s high time someone else had a turn. I love the station and my job here, interviews that I have not had time to do in years. So many great stories out there! but I’m also keen to do other projects too, and there just aren’t enough hours in the day. So, there’s lots to look forward to in the months and years ahead. As always, see you on the radio. The plan is for me to retire from my job as news director around the end of the year, and welcome someone else into that spot as is feasible. Kathleen Morgain, our Monday and Tuesday news host and reporter, will also be stepping away from the live microphone once there is a bright new face to fill that role.

BACK TO SCHOOL STATION by Jack Harris Volunteer Programmer

Back in the Saddle Y LAST LIVE ON-AIR show was

during our abbreviated Spring Pledge Drive in March of 2020 and I hadn’t had the dream since. Staff and volunteers have done an amazing job at keeping fresh content on the air. We re-invented wheels time and again to create, organize and broadcast our shows. Recording from home, I got bumped from the guest-room to the sauna to the patio and even the bathroom at one point trying to find a quiet place to re-create the feeling of sitting behind the big board, with the big view and sending out the big sound. As hard as we have all worked, there is just no substitute for being live, on the air. Fast forward to mid-July 2021, I get my fresh orientation of the fabulous station make-over (shiny floors! new bathroom! fresh paint!), stringent COVID protocols to keep everyone safe

and the recurrence of my recurring nightmare. It is always the same...Dead air, nothing cued up, I can’t get a record or a CD or anything else to play and I’ve got the Program Director breathing down my neck. Waking up from that bad dream the day of my first live Thursday Morning Folk show demonstrated to me the key difference to being on the air and preprogramming. The pressure is real and welcome. The chair feels good. The board is BIG and has lots of glowing buttons. Wisely, programmers are being given options to be live or pre-program depending on circumstances. KMUN Staff have devised a slow and steady process for the return of the Tillicum House to the center of our Universe. It will be a while before the station is bustling again with guests and visitors, but having live programmers is a great start. Even so, I don’t miss programming from the bathroom.

Content is created in collaboration with local organizations and creatives, including but not limited to the Liberty Theatre, Bay City Arts Center, Astoria’s AAUW, Sparrow Dance Company, Coaster Theatre, and the Clatsop County Historical Society.

Gratitude Goes Further I can’t imagine that I can possibly say Thank You enough to each and all of you. And I must admit the mind/body connection and how we that my Thank You goes beyond your support can use our thoughts and emotions to promote healing. The big takeaway was cultivating for the station - it’s personal! Every day I receive multiple hits of Gratitude. I try to share that with and practicing GRATITUDE. Gratitude and the rest of the staff and volunteers. And I hope happiness produce similar chemicals in the brain (dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin) but gratitude by some magical mechanism that you benefit as well. But then I decided YES, I CAN because the truth is that my job is only partly about asking for money. Money is just a conduit, just the gobetween that allows for the true exchange between Coast Community Radio and our members. The larger and best part of my job is to make sure that you know how grateful we are for each gift, each gesture of support, each connection. Every gift to KMUN is the result of a generous thought transformed into a concrete action. When I open an envelope with a membership gift in it, the amount of dopamine that’s released in my little brain is the same whether that gift is $15 or $1,500.

The Healing Power of Water T’S NO SECRET THAT we’re all very

weary of the pandemic. I think it’s not an exaggeration to say that we’ve all just about had it with so many things, are probably on our last nerve, and way ready for better times.

In times like these, when our natural resilience may be wearing thin, it’s good to seek out things that feed our souls. To that end, I offer you something we have a lot of around here: water. To help keep myself grounded during this crazy time, I’ve found it very healing to renew my relationship with water. I’m fortunate to be able to see the water from our home – just enough of a glimpse to cause a sense of relief when I look out the window. But all I have to do is leave the house and within a few moments I can see a river. In less than 30 minutes I can be on an ocean beach. What a wonderful bit of luck. What a lifesaver.

I think people naturally seek out water to heal their spirits in many ways. Years ago, I interviewed a group of Gulf War veterans who were kayaking down the Columbia River together. All were suffering from PTSD and dealing with various physical war injuries. When I talked with them on the beach at Brownsmead, they told me that being on the water soothed their souls, and helped ground them back into themselves so they could be present in the world. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by circumstances right now, first, know that you’re not alone. We’re all in this together. Second, take yourself down to the river or the ocean soon, and let it work its magic on you.

Sailors have known this for millennia, that gazing out toward the horizon can bring peace. It’s part of the romance of the sea, the wonderfully conspiratorial feeling of having “salt in your blood.” But it’s not just for mariners; it’s for anyone These days, even more than usual, I find myself stopping in places where I can take a few moments who wants to seek it out. and just look at the water.
