JUNE 29–JULY 4

BRING YOUR PURPOSE TO THE PUBLIC A Retreat for Creative Changemakers

The title of this workshop is inspired by the poet Galway Kinnell. In his poem “Saint Francis and the Sow,” he puts the words “self” and “blessing” together to create “self-blessing.” With dedicated time and place, our work is a kind of “self-blessing” and blossoms from within.

In this class, we focus on putting unlikely words together—self-blessing, mind-weeds, shadowpractice—in visual, auditory, and poetic ways. We use ink, watercolor, and graphite and incorporate this work into a handmade book. A contemplative atmosphere and uninterrupted time is an invitation to discovery in our work.

This workshop is open to all levels of experience, from beginners to professionals—and to those of you who want to set time aside for your muse by leaving your phones, watches, and screens outside the classroom. Laurie Doctor is an American painter, writer, and calligrapher. She has cultivated an active lecture and workshop schedule across three continents. lauriedoctor.com

THE ART OF FLUID MOVEMENT

A Continuum

Retreat

Elaine Colandrea and Megan Bathory-Peeler Course 2605-802/Tuition $470 ($425 Members) SS, LE

The human body is a body of water. The breathing, sound, and movement explorations of Continuum awaken our oceanic ancestry. Aquatic creatures are the guides in this retreat.

Fluid movement helps us become more comfortable in our bodies, increasing our ability to adapt to circumstances with more ease. Moving like water dissolves barriers and liberates energy that can support our health, relationships, and artistic expressions.

Through the practice of Continuum fluid movement, a natural state of creative flow is restored by amplifying our innate desire for connection and community. During this retreat, we engage in creative exchanges designed to enrich our internal fluid system, soften our defenses, and foster self-renewal.

Led by movement artists Elanie Colandrea and Megan Bathory-Peeler and other Continuum teachers, this retreat is appropriate for anyone who wishes to sustain themselves from a fluid state of wholeness, well-being, spontaneity, and joy.

Elaine Colandrea and Megan BathoryPeeler are movement artists, Continuum teachers, somatic educators, massage therapists, and collaborators at Watermark Arts. Their work has been deeply influenced by their association with Emilie Conrad, founder of Continuum. watermarkarts.com

From Tree to Spoon by Hand

Course 2605-993/Tuition $665/615/515 ($555 Members)

Learn the basics of freehand carving with green woodworker Charles Thompson, who typically works straight from the log, splitting, bending, and manipulating wood in a process that leverages personal intention and celebrates common materials.

This class includes material selection and identification, knife techniques, carving ax techniques, usage of decorative motifs and symbols, and finishing processes.

The workshop is open to participants of all skill levels. This will be a physical class focusing on the meeting point of hand, eye, and material. Because we’re utilizing hand-powered tools, hand strength may be required for certain techniques.

Encaustic & the Painted Book

Leslie Giuliani Course 2805-781/Tuition $430 ($385 Members)

Art enhances life, and creativity is for everyone. We learn the Japanese paper marbling technique, suminagashi. We paint, make prints, stitch, perforate, and stamp.

Artist and teacher Leslie Giuliani leads us in a highly creative and intuitive process where one thing leads to the next, as you work with energy and curiosity. Heated palettes, sewing machines, bookmaking supplies, and other interesting tools will be available for experimentation.

Learning to Love Midlife

Why Life Gets Better With Age

Chip Conley

Course 2902-878/Tuition $415 ($370 Members)

We’re barraged with anti-aging messages in the West. Have you ever thought of what would happen if we instead started developing a pro-aging perspective? What if midlife is a chrysalis, not a crisis?

Founder of the Modern Elder Academy (MEA), Chip Conley has given TED talks and written books on this very subject. He says midlife and beyond can be a time of transformation—when we let go of the mindsets, identities, and roles that no longer serve us.

Citing research from Yale’s Becca Levy, Chip says shifting one’s mindset on aging can gain us seven and a half years of additional longevity.

Join Chip for a taste of the “best of MEA” and discover how to cultivate purpose, wisdom, and community as we navigate the transitions of midlife. Discover why TIME magazine, TODAY, and the New York Times have celebrated the world’s first midlife wisdom school.

Chip Conley, cofounder of MEA (Modern Elder Academy), is a renowned entrepreneur, best-selling author, and dynamic speaker. He has led the hospitality industry as founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality and as Airbnb’s head of global hospitality and strategy. chipconley.com

FIRST & SECOND DEGREE REIKI TRAINING

Brett Bevell

Course 2902-789/Tuition $340 ($305 Members) PT

Reiki is one of the most popular and widely recognized forms of energy healing. Founded by Japanese mystic Mikao Usui, Reiki translates as “divine (or universal) life force.” When properly applied, Reiki maintains health and well-being and can unveil our deepest spiritual nature.

In this Reiki training, we receive initiations for first- and second-degree Reiki using a sacred process called attunement. For many, simply being attuned to Reiki is lifechanging as it raises our overall energy vibration, causing us to shed negative life patterns.

With compassion and humor, Reiki master Brett Bevell guides us in learning Reiki techniques for self-treatment and teaches us how to perform healing sessions on others.

We also learn how to engage sacred Reiki symbols to increase the power of Reiki treatments and send Reiki treatments distantly.

No previous Reiki experience is required. $15 materials fee; include when you register.

DANCING WITH THE BEAR

Healing Through Dreams & Imagination

Robert Moss

Course 2902-829/Tuition $360 ($325 Members)

Our dreams show us what is going on inside our bodies and what we need to stay well. They give us fresh and powerful imagery for self-healing. When we learn to go back inside our dreams and dream them onward, we open paths of healing for others and ourselves.

The Bear is the great medicine animal of North America. In Native tradition, the most powerful healers are those called by the Bear in dreams and visions. In ancient Europe, the Bear was a goddess.

In this weekend adventure into shamanic lucid dreaming, we explore how Bear medicine can heal and re-enchant our lives. We discover that active dreaming is central to soul recovery, reclaiming vital energy we lost through pain, heartbreak, guilt, or addiction. Together, we grow the compassionate circle of energy that makes the extraordinary easy.

THE BODY IS A DOORWAY

Ecological Storytelling & Embodiment

Sophie Strand

Course 2902-930/Tuition $395/345/245 ($310 Members)

How can we look at our bodies as being portals into a greater kinship with our ecosystems? What does it mean to look at our wounding—physical, spiritual, emotional—not as an imperative toward self-healing, but as a compass directed toward the wounding of another species or landscape?

In this weekend exploration with writer Sophie Strand, we cocreate myths and meditations that help us to root our bodies into the intelligence of our extended webs of kinship and ecosystems.

Through storytelling, meditation, walking, conversations, questions, and co-dreaming, we:

• Reroot popular myths back into their ecosystems to recover their original wisdom

• Compost old stories and develop mutual listening: to each other and to the land

• Reframe trauma and pain with ecological metaphors drawn from time spent outdoors

• Wander through the forests of Omega and create new sensory maps from smell and sound

ANCESTORS TO ELEMENTS

Cultivate Sacred Belonging With Nature

Sebene Selassie

Course 3005-785/Tuition $445/395/295 ($355 Members)

Elements and ancestors are ancient metaphors that exist in seemingly every culture throughout time as ways for people to cultivate sacred belonging. As metaphors, they highlight that human existence rests on a key paradox: all people and things are connected (elements) and, at the same time, we are unique beings, each with our own challenges and gifts (ancestors).

Opening to the profundity of this paradox helps us reconnect to the truth of sacred belonging. Because the natural world constantly expresses both balanced interdependence and glorious diversity, exploring this paradox through the natural world helps us embody the truth that we, too, are nature.

During this weeklong retreat held primarily in sacred silence, we engage in meditation, contemplation, journaling, movement, talks, and community sharing. Through creative and nature-based practices, we explore both our individuality and our interconnection.

There will be designated time during the week for racial and other a nity groups, as well as large group sharing.

KICKSTART YOUR NOVEL, MEMOIR, OR PERSONAL ESSAY

Mapping Your Transformation

Ruthie Ackerman

Course 3405-938/Tuition $455 ($410 Members)

Joan Didion wrote, “we are welladvised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be,” and in this workshop, we do just that. We explore past selves and allow them to collide on the page with the people we are today. We reacquaint ourselves with fires we’ve walked through and how we’ve come to the other side.

Whether you are new to writing or have a manuscript to bring, magic happens under Ruthie Ackerman’s guidance.  Through generative exercises, readings, and writing, we unlock our creative brains and dig into the heart of our stories. We leave with the nuts and bolts of a draft and a sustainable writing flow.

Ruthie Ackerman’s award-winning journalism has taken her around the world. Her popular piece for the New York Times Modern Love column inspired her memoir and shifted her focus to writing personal stories. ruthieackerman.com
