Exports from South Tyrol have been a clear success story since records began. Every fifth euro is now earned from exports. Compared to the rest of Italy, owing to the small average size of each enterprise, South Tyrol’s export figures lie somewhere in the middle, but the trend is clearly upwards.

Join forces for a successful export business EOS – Export Organization South Tyrol, accompanies South Tyrolean businesses on their way towards new clients and markets. In addition to providing support for the initiation of export activities, EOS helps to consolidate the presence of local companies on international markets. Another important aim of EOS is to increase the image and brand awareness of South Tyrolean quality products both at home and abroad.

Supporting the activities and initiatives of EOS is a key aim of the South Tyrolean regional government. Our common goal is to lay the foundations for local businesses to perform with excellence on international markets when it comes to selling high-quality products and services.

Product diversity in exports from South Tyrol today Gone are the days when South Tyrol exported simply food and wine. From vehicle components to plant protection agents, dietary products to precision equipment, there is enormous diversity in the range of products on offer. Its geographical location and characteristics mean that South Tyrol has long been a trader and exporter of agricultural products. Less traditional but no less successful, the export of industrial and technological products is constantly gaining strength. The range of products exported from South Tyrol has in fact changed considerably over the years. Products such as computing, electrical and precision equipment have all experienced large increases in export volume. Substantial growth rates can also be seen in the areas of metals and metal products, mechanical engineering and vehicle components.

More and more enterprises are discovering niches for themselves through greater specialisation, with their high quality ensuring they stand out against the international competition. In such sectors as medical and dental technology, custom interior design, dietary products, high-tech equipment or aerial ropeways and winter technologies, South Tyrol’s top companies are among the world’s leading manufacturers and enterprises.

It all began with the apple Apples were, together with wine, one of South Tyrol’s first exports. From the beginning of the 19th century, this precious fruit was sent northwards by horse and on foot. Such transport was a laborious and lengthy affair. The building of the railway over the Brenner Pass in 1867 made the transport of goods considerably easier. South Tyrolean apples thus reached the imperial courts

of Vienna, Berlin and St. Petersburg. The draining of the marshlands in the Etsch Valley towards the end of the 19th century made large areas along the river available for the further cultivation of apples. This truly fruitful period saw the establishment of the first fruit-growing cooperatives in the Burggrafenamt, where apples are still the main export item.

South Tyrolean businesses export a wide range of different products, with the shares of the individual export sectors are fairly equal. A differentiated, high-quality palette of goods makes exports a strong pillar of the South Tyrolean economy, ensuring that it has been able to withstand the fluctuations seen on the world markets in relatively good shape.
