History

Before the English settlement of what we now know as Melbourne, the land which the Concrete lawn is now on belonged to the Wurundjeri tribe and was part of Billibellary's clan's territory. It was a swampy wetland up until 1861 when a lake was created in order to drain the wetland and create a more practical area for the construction of the surrounding buildings.

The Medical School and the National Museum were both built surrounding the lake two years later in 1863. A number of buildings and paths were built around the lake as it was an ornament of the University of Melbourne.

Eventually, in 1939, the lake was filled in due to limitations on space. It was made into a grassy lawn which the library (now the Baldwin Spencer building) was built on towards the north.

After the concrete lawn was built and there were more spaces for buildings, years later in 1993 the Redmond Barry building was constructed to the north-east of the union square and 21 years later the Melbourne School of Design was then constructed to the south-east. Over the 153 years, we can see how much the then swampy wetlands evolved to become the Concrete Lawn and how it served as a central space in which buildings were constructed around.
