WELCOME

2017 was another magnificent year at Stoke Park! Our annual The Boodles tennis event was a sell-out and we were delighted to welcome back tennis superstars such as Juan Martin del Potro and Alexander Zverev. This past year also saw the full refurbishment of our Alison Course bunkers (10-18) which have had much praise, completing the full refurbishment of holes 1-18. Refurbishment work has begun on our Lane Jackson course (19-27) and a new dedicated practice area. These will be completed by April 2018. Stoke Park’s teams have enjoyed huge success in competition - many congratulations to all the those who have not just triumphed but have been great ambassadors to Stoke Park. I would like to thank our 2017 Lady and Men’s Golf Captains Christine Connelly and Vince Murphy for a superb year and Tennis Captains Tony Maycock, Janie Kebell, Shiel Kumar, Toni Tucker, Louise Soper, Linda Tan and Claudia Sylvester for a fantastic year. I would like to wish 2018 Golf Captain’s Jean Taylor and Derek Ball all the success for the year ahead. 2017 saw Stoke Park win a number of prestigious awards and accolades such as the ‘Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Business of the Year 2017’ at the Bucks Business Awards, ‘Gourmet Golf Resort of the Year 2017’ from Great Golf Magazine, ‘Hotel Chef of the Year - Chris Wheeler’ at the Hotel Cateys, ‘Top 100 Best Golf Resorts in the World’ from top100golfcourses.com, ‘UK Golf Resort of the Year’ at the Square Mile Awards, ‘Best British Spa Hotels’ from The Times, ‘Best Golf Clubhouse in the World’ at the World Golf Awards and the ‘Most Beautiful Tennis Resorts in the World’ from Square Mile magazine. As always Stoke Park has supported over 150 charities this year and has helped raise vital funds for a huge range of local and national causes, including our Men Golf Captain’s chosen charity SWIPE and our Lady Golf Captain’s chosen charity Target Ovarian Cancer. I wish you all a fantastic 2018!

We look back at the amazing...

The Boodles 2017

C

elebrating its 16th anniversary this year and often described as “one of the highlights of the summer social season,” The Boodles has in recent years made a habit of attracting some of the biggest names in tennis. Guests are also offered the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the players. It is hosted within Stoke Park’s stunning 300-acre estate in the Buckinghamshire countryside, perhaps the most picture-perfect setting in the English tennis scene. With the intimate purpose-built stadium 8

STOKE PARK

accommodating only 2,000 people, and with no seat further than ten metres from the grass court, The Boodles allows you to be breathtakingly close to the action! The Boodles is truly a unique event. It has a fun English garden party atmosphere, with world-class tennis being played in intimate and beautiful surroundings. Whether you come as a hospitality guest or a stadium pass ticket holder, The Boodles is a wonderful experience. It was even named this year within the Sunday Times’ Best Summer Days Out, and listed on top 5 Social Events of the summer!

Juan Martin del Potro was one of many high-profile players at the event

With an exclusive list of official sponsors, such as Perrier Jouët Champagne, Audi, Patek Philippe, PlayBrave and the established status of our title sponsor Boodles, guests will experience the luxury and service that has become so synonymous with these brands of excellence. Players included stars such as the current world no. 4 Sascha Zverev, Olympic silver Medallist Juan Martin del Potro and Australia’s Nick Kyrgios. We welcomed back our title sponsor Boodles Jewellers, who displayed some of their finest pieces much to the delight of all the guests, as well as stunning Patek Philippe watches. Fellow sponsor Perrier Jouët Champagne flowed, the latest Audi cars were displayed around the grounds and the British sports brand, PlayBrave also returned as a sponsor and provided the outfits for the umpires, line judges and ball boys.

Sascha Zverev was featured on the front cover of Issue 4 of our magazine

Our host for the week was the wonderful Di Dougherty, who was a big hit with the audience as well as the players! Stoke Park’s Executive Chef Chris Wheeler and his team provided exquisite cuisine, with A Luxury Travel Blog commenting: ‘This is mass catering of Michelin star quality and can only be described as a triumph.’

The Boodles 2018 will take place from the 26th June - 30th June (the week after Royal Ascot) and tickets are on sale now at www.theboodles.com

Our

K

ingsman connection

Over the past seven issues of the Stoke Park magazine, we have been very fortunate to have fabulous front covers. From Novak Djokovic to Naomi Harris (Miss Moneypenny), the rose that is Claudia Schiffer to golfer Justin Rose, Daniela Hantuchová to Sascha Zverev (and not forgetting HM The Queen), each cover has had a connection to Stoke Park. So how does the latest front cover of The Kingsman himself, Taron Egerton, connect to Stoke Park? They say you can connect everyone in the world by six degrees of separation, we can connect to The Kingsman in well… six!

1. Stoke Park’s Chief Executive, Chester King, appears in both films as one of the Kingsmen. 2. Michael Caine’s character is named Chester King!

3. It is directed by Matthew Vaughn, who also directed Layer Cake - the film which launched Daniel Craig to Bond stardom, and of course was filmed at Stoke Park.

4. The film also stars Colin Firth, who 18 years ago filmed the iconic mini break in Bridget Jones’s Diary here at Stoke Park. 5. Mark Strong, who plays Merlin in both Kingsman movies, starred in RocknRolla, and filmed scenes from the film on our grass tennis courts. 6. Sir Elton John makes an appearance in The Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Sir Elton also performed an incredible concert here at Stoke Park in 2014.

e are delighted that our Golf Members have been enjoying huge success in competition in 2017. As a Golf Member, you do not only have access to our Championship Golf Course (where we have recently completed refurbishment of the bunkers on holes 1-9 and 10-18), you also benefit from the incredible tuition on offer, as well as our state-of-the-art swing studio and golf facilities. Future projects include bunker refurbishment on 19-27 and development of a new and enhanced short game practice area. Stoke Park’s Academy and Golf School are in full flow, with a fantastic team of PGA Pro’s and our Scholars are showing the world they are stars of both present and future! Social life

at the Club is buzzing, with hugely successful Captain’s and Pro’s Day, trips overseas as well as all the social events which take place in and around the magnificent mansion, from Gourmet Evenings to Bonfire Night, all with 5 AA Red star service. Stoke Park itself has won some fabulous awards over the past 12 months, from the ‘UK Golf Resort of the Year’ - Square Mile Awards 2017 and the ‘Best Golf Clubhouse in the World 2017’ - World Golf Awards. Our Members have also been having incredible success! Here are some of the amazing competition triumphs of our Members in 2017, all of which we are extremely proud.

Men’s Intercounty Scratch League Our Men’s 1st team, captained by Luke Rusher, returned to the winner’s enclosure and claimed the Division 1 crown for the 5th time in 9 years. The scratch team has the distinction of being Division Runners Up in every year in which they did not win. With a pool of around 20 strong single figure golfers to call upon, there can be optimism that Stoke Park will continue its winning ways going forward.

Our victorious Bucks Shield team, caddies, supporters and Ladies Captain Christine Connelly

Ladies County Bucks Shield Stoke Park won the Bucks Shield for a record-breaking fifth consecutive year. Having won through several knockout stages to Finals Day on 6th September at Gerrards Cross, the strong team of Daisy Kennedy, Georgina Bowers, Izzy Holmes, Amelia Curtis, Jill Dodds, Camilla Kastrup, Edwina Acheson and Yuki Sugimoto secured the trophy with emphatic wins over Ellesborough in the Semis and Denham in the Finals.

JUNIORS Girls English Schools Under 16 National Champion North of England Under 16 Girls Daisy Kennedy enjoyed a very successful summer, winning two important titles within the space of a month. In July, she won the English Schools Under 16 Championship at Walsall (the title that fellow Stoke Park member Thalia Kirby won in 2016), and swiftly followed that up with a win in the North of England Under 16 Girls at Pannal GC. Strong performances such as these brought her to the attention of the England Under 16 selectors and saw her handicap tumble from 4 to Scratch.

County Success

Daisy Kennedy

Many of the Stoke Park juniors play regularly for County Teams: BB&O Under 13s - Ben McFadden BB&O Under 16s - Struan Hancock, James Gregory, Taylor Paul, Carl Banner BB&O Junior Elite - Conor Gough, Tom Gregory, Taylor Paul, James Gregory Bucks Ladies 1st Team - Georgina Bowers, Deeya Aggarwal, Daisy Kennedy, Thalia Kirby Berks Ladies 1st Team - Julia Warke

With so many commitments on a national level, the boys have not been as active on the Futures Tour circuit as in previous years, although Ben McFadden, George Kennedy and Carl Banner have all recorded individual age category victories in 2017. Ben McFadden also added the Under 14 Championship to his Under 12 victory in 2016, while Taylor Paul was successful in the Under 15 Championship. This year, the BB&O created The Bucks Cup to be awarded to the aggregate winner over 72 holes playing in both the Luke Donald Salver and the Stoke Park Junior Open. With a total of 292 (77, 71, 73, 71), Nandit Sondagar won the inaugural event. Taylor Paul won a BB&O order of merit event, the inaugural Tyrrell Hatton Masters at Harleyford, in impressive style. He shot an incredible 7 under par 65 to equal the course record, ironically set by Tyrrell himself when he was an amateur member there. Tom Gregory ended the season in glorious fashion winning the Van Phillips Trophy, the BB&O’s newly created flagship Under 16 event, played at Stoke Park. The event attracted a high class field of sub 5 handicap golfers and, assisted by a stor ming finish which included a 138yard pitch in on 17, Tom carded a 2 under gross 69 to claim the trophy.

Van Phillips and Tom Gregory

Playing for England Daisy Kennedy and Thalia Kirby both gained valuable points from Under 16 matches for which they were selected for England vs Switzerland in August and vs Scotland in October. Thomas Gregory and Conor Gough have also gained international experience. Tom took part in an England vs Spain quadrangular match early in the season, and they both played in the Italian Under 16 Championship. Conor also played in the European Young Masters in Norway, in which he came 7th individually and was one of the 4-person team which won the team event for England for the first time.

Club Championships Plus 2 handicapper Andrew Lynch secured the Men’s Scratch Championship with rounds of 67 + 68, producing a fine 7 under par gross aggregate. The RH de Montmorency trophy (equating to the Nett Club Championship) was won by 16-handicapper Gary Lane with net scores of 69 & 70. Once again, the Ladies Championship was won by a junior girl, Georgina Bowers (5 h’cap), who recorded gross scores of 80 and 78 for a total 10 over par. 29 handicapper Bronwen McWilliams claimed the Nett Championship with scores of 73 and 81. Stoke Park Open Competitions Our junior members continued their winning ways throughout the season - winning all three Stoke Park Open Competitions. In July, Conor Gough became the youngest ever winner of the Stoke Park Trophy (Scratch 36 hole Open for handicaps of 5 or less), while Thalia Kirby came out on top in the Ladies Open. Finally, Nandit Sondagar’s first place in the Junior Open on 25th August sealed victory for him in the Bucks Cup (BB&O trophy for the best aggregate over the Beaconsfield & Stoke Park Junior Opens).

The Captains’ Tours Our vibrant and enthusiastic Men’s & Ladies sections enjoyed several golf tours to exotic climes, organised by their respective captains - Vince Murphy and Christine Connelly. Meanwhile in May, Christine took 24 ladies for a 3-day break to Turnberry, Scotland. Some stunning golf was played and they enjoyed typical Scottish hospitality in a typical Scottish sunny weather. In early June, an even bigger group of 35 ladies travelled to Palma, Mallorca, where they had a week of sun, sangria and more outstanding golf. The first week in June, a group of 40 golfers joined Vince for a tour of prestige Irish golfing venues. They stayed centrally in Dublin’s Temple Bar district and played five rounds over Portmarnock, The Island and the K Club.

And the winner is... Stoke Park wins the ‘Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Business of the Year’ award at the Bucks Business Awards Stoke Park are absolutely delighted to have won the ‘Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Business of the Year’ award at the Buckinghamshire Business Awards, which were held in a glittering ceremony on Friday 30th June at the Waterside Theatre, Aylesbury. On receiving the award, Stoke Park’s Head of Communications, Nick Downie, commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to win this award. It means so much to us. We are very proud to be a Buckinghamshire business. Our members and guests are largely local, so to win on home soil is something very special.”

We are also thrilled to have won the ‘World’s Best Golf Clubhouse’ award at the World Golf Awards. As this magazine goes to print, Stoke Park has also been named Square Mile’s ‘UK Golf Resort of the Year 2017’.

THE

WINDS OF CHANGE

A change is as good as a rest. Nothing remains constant except change itself. Out with the old, in with the new.

M

ost of us have grown up with these popular sayings. They encourage us to accept that change is part of life, which, after all, doesn’t stop for anyone. With this acceptance, there’s an implication of having no control. All you can do is sit back and see perhaps looking through your fingers - as to what will happen next. But at B P Collins, we embrace another adage. Welcome change as the rule but not as your ruler. Although it’s hard to predict some of the changes that life will bring, we know that having practical advice before those moments happen could mean that you have much more control over the outcome whilst protecting yourself, your family or your business in the

26

STOKE PARK

process. We can help you to record your wishes or put a secure agreement in place so further expense, discord and misunderstandings could be avoided in the future. And even if you’ve never got around to planning for your future and you’re presented with a situation that you haven’t prepared for, we can still help you to achieve the best possible outcome through strategic thinking and expert negotiation. Change can also be welcomed and very much part of your life plan too - whether you’re getting married, buying a new home, starting your own business or hiring new staff. The expertise of our lawyers, who have a wealth of experience in creating watertight agreements, could prove priceless in the long run, when life takes an unexpected turn. We are a friendly and approachable team that provides ‘robust legal solutions’ for our clients. And

in the spirit of the winds of change, the plans that you make with B P Collins could be your fortified shelter, protecting you, your family or your business, when those changes escalate from a gentle breeze to a hurricane that may be capable of damaging your livelihood, property and relationships. B P Collins’ lawyers will be by your side, always advising with the utmost care and foresight so you can prepare for whatever changes come your way.

Executive Chef

Chris Wheeler

2017

has been a very busy year for our wonderful Executive Chef Chris Wheeler and his team. As well as looking after the kitchens at Stoke Park - including cooking up a storm at this years The Boodles - Chris has been on stage demonstrating his incredible culinary skills to the enjoyment of vast crowds at Taste of London, Countryfile Fair and the Thame Food Festival. At Thame, Chris not only managed to do a cookery demonstration with exquisite Quality Standard Mark Beef and Lamb every hour on the Stoke Park stage (Chris is the UK Ambassador for the QSM Beef and Lamb scheme), he demonstrated on the Belazu stage, cooked the main course of the sumptuous banquet on the Saturday evening (a stunning Beef en Croute), and then on the Sunday carried on the demonstrations and judged the Big Thame Bake. He then closed the show on the mainstage, showcasing how to cook his Beef en Croute, whilst simultaneously baking a rhubarb and gingerbread soufflĂŠ alongside host Suzy Pelta. In 2018 Chris is ready to showcase his cooking talents at Big in France, where he will be teaching cookery courses in a stunning French Chateaux from the 4th-7th October. RECIPE Autumn Roasted Loin of Venison with Parsnip Purée, Charred Brussels Sprouts, Cranberry Compote, Game Chips and Venison Jus Ingredients (serves 4) • 1 1.5 kilo venison loin • 1 kilo of parsnips • 50g curly kale • 6 baby turnips • 100g Brussels sprouts • 1 large King Edward potato • 100g fresh cranberries • 20g sugar • 8 chestnuts • 10g honey

• 100ml red wine • 150ml venison jus (or red wine jus) • 15ml double cream • 15ml milk • 10g salted butter • 10g butter to season • Olive oil • Salt • Pepper

Method For the venison: Season the venison on both sides before you pan fry it in a little olive oil on both sides. Once sealed, place in an oven at 180°c for 5 minutes for medium rare, cooking longer for different preferences. For the baby turnips: Peel the baby turnips and place them in a saucepan with cold water, a little salt and 5g sugar. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes until the baby turnips become soft. Drain, then toss them in a little butter and season to taste. For the curly kale: Pick, wash and sauté the curly kale in a little olive oil before seasoning to taste. For the chestnuts: Peel and roast the chestnuts in a deep baking tray at 160°c for 10 minutes before adding the honey. Mix, then put them back into the oven to caramelise for a couple of minutes. For the cranberries: Bring the cranberries, 15g sugar and red wine to the boil in a saucepan and simmer for 15 minutes until the cranberries resemble a jam like substance.

For the parsnips: 1. Peel the parsnips and slice two very thinly on a mandolin and place into a fryer (or a pan with oil) to deep fry for 30 seconds until golden brown and crisp. 2. Remove the parsnips from the fryer and place on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Leave to cool and crisp up. 3. Dice the remaining parsnips and place in a saucepan with the milk, cream and a little salt. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes until the parsnips are soft. Drain, but collect the milk and cream from the parsnips in a jug. 4. Blend the parsnips whilst adding the butter and slowly add the hot milk and cream until you create a smooth consistency. For the Brussels sprouts: Blanche your Brussels sprouts in salted water for approximately 5 minutes before draining and halving them. Fry in a griddle pan until they become golden brown. For the game chips: 1. Peel the King Edward potato before slicing it on a mandolin. To create the crisscross look, rotate the potato 90° before each slice. 2. Deep fry the chips for approximately 2 minutes until they turn golden brown then drain and allow to cool and crisp up. To serve: 1. Swipe your parsnip purée across the plate and place two piles of curly kale on either side of the purée. 2. Slice your venison in two and place on top of the curly kale. 3. Arrange your baby turnips, caramelised chestnuts and charred Brussels sprouts around the plate. 4. Dollop your cranberry compote around the plate, garnish with your game chips and parsnip crisps. 5. Serve your warm jus in a jug on the side.

SCARLET LONDON

We speak to business woman Natasha Korol - a pioneer in the sustainable fur industry

THIS

November, the UK-based contemporary, luxury fur brand Scarlet London, officially launched its first collection. Comprised of timeless classic styles as well as modern high fashion items, the collection is available in an array of striking colours - the perfect investment for any wardrobe. The woman behind Scarlet London is Natasha Korol, who has an extensive career as a fur broker with over 19 years in the business, and has brought all of her knowledge and experience to this new brand. All the furs are carefully and ethically sourced from auctions and fur specialists primarily from Denmark and Europe. The furs are then treated with the greatest care in order to create stunning pieces that can be tailored to each customer’s individual desire and taste. The collection includes jackets, hats, collars, scarves and pompoms - all crafted from the finest quality of fox, coyote, mink, Swakara and raccoon fur. Thanks to the help of new modern dyes, Scarlet London is able to create pieces in the most stunning colours without causing any damage to the texture of the fur. Natasha aims to inform and educate consumers on the damaging effects the faux fur industry is having on the environment, as faux fur is made of non-biodegradable material. Scarlet London is sprung from Natasha’s undeniable and unstoppable passion for the natural fur industry, and her desire to provide nothing but the best quality fur for garments and accessories. Natasha Korol says: “All our products are made of traceable and sustainable fur, and are an absolute joy to wear.” www.scarlet.london

EXCLUSIVE ESCAPES SCOTLAND Charlotta Billström jet-sets to Scotland with PrivateFly and The Gilt Club At 9am a car picks me up outside of my flat, and in the glowing autumn morning sun, we set off to Luton Signature Flight Support Terminal. This is not like any other flight terminal, this is a private jet terminal, and it is fabulous. There are no queues to be seen, no crowds or newsagents - only airy spaces, big windows and personal service. After a coffee it is time to board the jet, and it is absolutely impossible to mount the stairs to a private jet without feeling like a film star. The interior is luxuriously decorated with soft beiges and incredibly comfortable leather seats. The purpose of the trip is to visit the stunning Kinross House, just north of Edinburgh. It is part of the Gilt Club - a carefully selected network of luxury properties and assets. By joining, members can swap and exchange what would normally be off-the-radar luxury houses and villas with other members at no

cost at all, apart from the set annual fee. The network stretches around the world, and as our luck would have it today, we are flown up with PrivateFly for a day trip to this beautiful castle in Scotland. And what a day! After the welcome drink, we are escorted to the dining room where a delicious threecourse lunch is served, sourced from local ingredients. The rest of the afternoon is then filled with a generous tour of the property, traditional Scottish highland

games and afternoon tea. Tired from the fresh countryside air, and full from all the delicious treats, we are driven back to the Edinburgh Signature Support terminal where the jet awaits to take us back to London. And as I sink my tired body into the soft leather seats, I wish - for the first time in my life that the flight home would be just a little bit longer. www.thegiltclub.com

HOLLAND We travel to Amsterdam to learn the basics of ABC - Arts, Bikes and Canals whilst staying at the luxurious Kimpton De Witt hotel The newly opened Kimpton De Witt, in the heart of Amsterdam’s Palace neighbourhood, is just steps away from the city’s Centraal Station and was the perfect location to base ourselves for a flying weekend escape. Although boasting 274 guest rooms, the hotel has the feel of a small boutique hotel with staff that is both very personable and professional. Even though we only stayed for less than 48 hours, they remembered our names and greeted us each time we passed through the lobby and other communal areas. A striking ‘living wall’ of vibrant florals and botanicals trailing the entrance welcome you into a bright and modern lobby. Each bedroom is filled with unexpected, yet refined, touches such as fun interpretations of classic Dutch art, custom-made, beautifully-crafted desks, and quirky Atelier Areti bird bedside lamps.

Amsterdam is well known for its biking culture and there is no better way to see and experience the city like a local than to cruise along the canals on a bike. The Kimpton De Witt ensures that all guests can benefit from this experience by offering complimentary VanMoof bikes. Guests can also share an evening drink with the team at the nightly hosted ‘Wine Hour’ from 5pm. Other nice ‘boutique hotel’ touches include making you feel pampered with luxurious in-room toiletries from Amsterdam-based natural skin care brand MarieStella-Maris. Nearby attractions include Dam Square, the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, the canals, and - of course - the obligatory visit and photo session at the ‘I Am Amsterdam’ sign. Being right in the heart of the city makes the Kimpton De Witt the ideal hotel for sightseeing, relaxing, exploring and feeling like you’re at a home away from home. THE

QUEEN IS KING OF THE SEAS

Christina Raptis takes a cruise to Amsterdam on Cunard’s newly-renovated, luxury liner the SS Queen Victoria

A

s journalists we’re inundated with requests to review products and services and very occasionally one comes through that - pun intended - rocks our boat! This was recently the case as we were very fortunately invited by Cunard to join them on a trip to Amsterdam and Bruges on the newly re-launched Queen Victoria cruise ship. The majestic ship has recently undergone a £43 million refurbishment, and upgrades include a brand new restaurant, revamped sun deck, and Gin & Fizz bar, amongst numerous others. It’s impossible to convey the scale of the ship in words, so nothing could have prepared a cruise-virgin for the impressive sight of the Queen Victoria docked at the port in Southampton. Despite there being thousands of passengers, check-in is seamless and efficient and you wonder how the airlines get it so wrong. Upon boarding we are greeted by friendly staff and given a brief tour of the ship. As we are sipping delicious cocktails in one of the Queen Victoria’s many bars, our journey down the Channel and past the Isle of Man towards Amsterdam has begun. The expression ‘the goal is not the destination, it’s the journey there’ feels truly suitable as we stroll around out on the sun deck, gazing out over the horizon. Dinner is served in the Britannia Club whose décor is as regal as any Michelinstarred restaurant I’ve ever visited, and truthfully the cuisine is not far behind, all accompanied by the beautiful backdrop of gentle waves of the English Channel creating a truly first-class dining experience. The ship, or boat if you prefer, is nothing less than breathtaking in both size and luxury. Attention to detail in design and touches evoke memories of craftsmanship from a bygone era coupled with 21st century convenience and comforts. Polished brass, endless rich mahogany and more of the finest design materials create an interior that is both incredibly decadent and elegant and is literally fit for a queen. After an overnight sailing we arrived in Amsterdam the following day, and headed out to explore the city. An organised and informative walking tour showed us the key highlights of the city, with the final stop being the rooftop-rotating Moon Restaurant. Located on the 19th floor of the famous landmark A’DAM Toren, chefs Jaimie van Heije and Tommy den Hartogand have created an exclusive and equally delicious menu, focusing mainly on locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. We spent the evening enjoying delicious food, overlooking the city and with the perfect view of the Queen herself docked in the distance.

Back on the boat we retired to our suites. Each cabin is generously proportioned, tastefully and luxuriously decorated in mellow tones featuring plush fabrics and, of course, offer a gorgeous view of endless sea from our very own private deck. The boat, for those who haven’t enjoyed a cruise before, has endless activities, shows, events and food options to keep you entertained it’s literally a floating city complete with a mall to satiate all your shopping needs. The Queen offers its guests a variety of exciting activities, so whether you are looking to maximise your trip with physical pursuits such as yoga, pilates, or spinning classes to mention but a few - or just relax in the spa and indulge in a massage or treatment, you are sure to find whatever you are looking for. For those seeking something entertaining for the eyes and ears, the Royal Court theatre offers spectacular West-end style shows and music by truly talented musicians. If you are looking for a more traditional way to spend your evenings, The Queen Victoria has a very traditional British pub where guests can enjoy games and, of course, as every English pub worthy the name should offer - pub quizzes, karaoke and speciality beer-on-tap. On our third day we spend time exploring Amsterdam further, and later in the afternoon we are treated to a Gin & Fizz cocktail-making masterclass. The skilled bartenders at The Queen Victoria teach us how to mix the most delicious cocktails, which we enjoy before we (somewhat tipsily) head up to the Queen’s Grill for dinner - the perfect ending to yet another fabulous day. Whether you want to escape for a weekend, or a travel around the world, Cunard offers cruises to accommodate your dream getaway. Cruise options range from a two-day trip from Southampton to Hamburg all the way to an incredible 134-day world tour, New York to New York, giving guests an experience of a lifetime, and the opportunity to discover every corner of the world. Our trip may not have taken us around the world (this time), but it surely was a world-class cruise. www.cunard.co.uk

here is an immediate sense of serenity and instant feel of relaxation as soon as we drive through the gates to Villa la Bergerie. There are no other sounds than the whistling bird song and the low swoshing of the wind blowing through the trees. We are alone up in the southern French mountains, and it is completely wonderful. We are personally greeted by each member of the in-house staff. This private and fully serviced villa is neither like a hotel nor a normal rented house, it is something above and beyond both, and the warm greeting is a very promising start for the stay. Villa la Bergerie is one of Richard and Laura Rich-Jones private villas that guests can hire both for shorter stays and longer. The personal service is key; one of the most important goals of the villa is that it should serve as a home away from home. This is a villa meant for ultimate comfort and family living, which is just what we experience. We indulge in the delicious food cooked by the in-house chef, we splurge out on the sun chairs in the afternoon sun, and we play truly competitive games of table football. No one can resist making themselves at home at Villa la Bergerie it just happens so naturally. There are no limitations to what

can be arranged in terms of activities and comfort. Anything guests are for, the staff can arrange: private shopping in Cannes, wine-tasting in Côte d’Provence, private yacht hire, or simply a ride to one of the nearby villages for some ice cream and a coffee. In the summer season the villages become hotspots and the small plazas and restaurants fill up with both locals and tourists, all wanting to enjoy the best of local food, drink and company. How does one get around to all of these little villages, you might wonder? The Villa, of course, arranges first class car service, and there is something fantastically luxurious in being driven in a spanking new Mercedes along narrow and curvy Mediterranean country roads as the sun starts to set. When renting the villa, parties or families can choose from either renting just the main house, consisting of six double bedrooms, or the villa and the

guest house, making that eight double bedrooms in total. However, even though that might sound crowded, that is not the case. There are plenty of common areas, designed for leisure and relaxation, a large pool and a beautiful garden. One could easily go an entire week without any interaction with the outside world, however, for guests who start to crave buzzing night life or simply want a change of environment, the Terre Blanche Hotel is located within a short walking distance from the villa. It is not affiliated with Villa la Bergerie, but guests can still enjoy the restaurant, bar and spa at the hotel. Everything is at la Bergerie so luxurious, yet at the same time equally informal and relaxed. Guests can choose what kind of food should be served, and can be as much or as little involved in the cooking and meal planning as they wish, just another example of the

extreme flexibility and accommodating service Villa la Bergerie offers its guests. When it is time to leave, we all have made ourselves so comfortable at the villa, it feels like defying the laws of nature to leave. Everything, from the impeccable service, the food, the amazing activities, to the nature and the environment surrounding the villa is impeccable. And as the car drives us out through the gates and towards the airport - as much as I would love to be a french lady sipping wine all day under the shadow of an olive tree - being a writer and having the fortune of experience places like this, is pretty wonderful too.

hat is the best aspect of being part of a family? Maybe it’s the knowledge that your individuality is celebrated and nurtured? It could be the ability to tap into all the experience and skills your family members offer? Or perhaps it’s the security you feel from always having pastoral and financial support? This is why the Berkhamsted family of schools is so proud of the outstanding range of educational and care options it offers for children aged five months to 18 years. From its year-round Day Nursery to its renowned Sixth Form, the Group also offers working parents an invaluable wraparound care programme that includes flexi-boarding for children in Years 7

and above. A short 30-minute commute from London and based across five sites in both Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire and Amersham, Buckinghamshire, the schools offer exemplary co-ed and girls single sex prep school options, before the pupils move to the popular single sex senior schools and culminate their educational journey in the co-ed sixth. As with all successful families, the Group has strong values, which underpin all aspects of school life. These values of aiming high with integrity, being adventurous and serving others are seen both in their academic, creative and sporting successes but also, and just as importantly, in the

young people they nurture, support and encourage to be the best versions of themselves they can be. By structuring themselves as a family of six schools, the Berkhamsted Schools Group is able to combine huge economies of scale, outstanding facilities and excellence of achievement with first-class pastoral care and knowledge of each pupil as an individual - enjoying the advantages normally gained by both large and small schools. GIVE YOUR CHILD A SPORTING CHANCE Words by Geoff Pearce-Gan

A

ccording to health organisations, young people from 5-18 years old are

recommended to do at least three types of physical exercise each week to stimulate growth and improve emotional and physical health: aerobic exercise, exercises to strengthen bones and muscles, and sports, such as cycling, tennis - all good for maintaining a basic level of health. When selecting a school for our child, their happiness is, of course, paramount. However, we also look for certain key criteria such as academic excellence, highranking on the school league tables and the sporting opportunities offered. Many independent schools offer a greater range of sporting activities than those usually provided by the state. Berkhamsted schools offer an extensive range of sports and cater for all abilities, both for team games and competitive activities. For example, few schools in the UK offer Lacrosse, but this is a sport available at Berkhamsted Girls School and Sixth Form. According to the English Lacrosse organisation, this allows pupils to develop their strengths, stamina, speed and flexibility. The Berkhamsted School offers also extra-curricular clubs including equestrian, Eton Fives, rowing, skiing and shooting. At Gayhurst School, games and activities are an integral part of academic life. The sports facilities have been enhanced by an all-weather Astroturf surface. The main sports are obligatory for both boys and girls, with Gayhurst’s key aims being to enhance pupils’ experience with additional sports. The teams are competitive and well-coached, but the importance of good-sportsmanship is high on the school’s agenda. A notable sporting opportunity for girls is horse riding, and both boys and girls can try out other activities such as fencing, judo, golf and sailing.

Sports are well-catered for at Maltmans Green, and the Royal Masonic both girls’ schools. At Maltmans Green younger pupils experience a build-up of physical co-ordination skills, group or team tasks and challenges. Children then develop basic skills to participate in formal games (with rules and tactics), as well as the opportunity to become members of clubs and squads. Top teams in netball, tennis, rounders and swimming compete at local, regional and national levels. Students attending Royal Masonic enjoy the sports facilities housed within the impressive Nuffield Sports Centre. Facilities include a brand new fitness suite, a rubber-floored hall which caters for volleyball, racket sports, netball and hockey. Visiting the school and seeing its facilities first hand will give you a better insight, and allow you to make an informed choice when deciding on the right school for your child. ayhurst is a co-educational, independent preparatory school for children aged three to 11 in Gerrards Cross. Academic standards are high and above all, we strive to equip the children in our care with; confidence, resilience and independence. We have a friendly, wonderfully-resourced environment with small class sizes in which children learn and flourish. Our commitment to continuous improvement and development means that the children benefit greatly from the facilities offered on our five acre site, including IT rooms, Science laboratories, Art centre, woodland adventure playground, extensive playing fields and an all-weather AstroTurf. Girls and boys can join Gayhurst at Nursery in the September after their third birthday and continue until the end of year 6. In Nursery the emphasis is on gentle, creative and constructive learning in a stimulating environment. The Junior School (age 4-6), with its own Head has small class sizes and children are taught by their form teachers together with specialist staff

for Music, Games and PE. The Senior School (age 7 to 11) is divided into Middle and Senior Years. The Middle School is an introduction to a more secondary school style structure as the children move away from being taught by form teachers towards specialist subject teaching. There is a Head of Middle School and a Head of every subject. Years 5 and 6 are a preparation for life after Gayhurst. The children work towards the 11+ transfer to Grammar Schools and Common Entrance examinations for leading independent schools. The teaching of wider life skills is just as important as the curriculum. Although geographically separate within the grounds, the departments are connected culturally and share the Gayhurst ethos which underpins the successful reputation of the School. Gayhurst takes an inclusive attitude to participation in Sport, Games, Music and Drama. Gayhurst has an outstanding record of sporting achievement including many regional and national successes. Treat your dehydrated or tired skin to this facial. Starting with a thorough cleanse, the skin is then exfoliated using a marine cosmetic and sound vibration technology, leaving it perfectly clean and ready to absorb the highly effective I HYDRATE. Draining, infusion and stimulating manoeuvres with ultrasound technology allow the product to be absorbed deeply into the skin. The treatment concludes with an application of cream, leaving the skin fresh, bright and hydrated from the very first session.

This anti-ageing treatment uses a new marine cosmetic product, I SMOOTH, alongside the iBeauty’s latest ultrasound technology in fibrolysis mode to target all types of fine lines and wrinkles by reactivating the skin regeneration process. The skin is smoothed and the appearance of wrinkles is visibly reduced. It can also be added on to any Thalgo anti-ageing facial as a 15-minute extension, for a targeted micro-massage action on wrinkles for a boosted anti-ageing effect.

The team behind delilah is Rupert Kingston, Hannah Nicholson and Juliet White. Driven by the lack of boutique British brands, the team has poured all its experience and expertise into delilah. Crown gold was a rose coloured gold introduced by Henry VIII to replace the gold sovereign. Finally, of course, the symbol, the beautiful pale pink Delilah rose, a true icon of British beauty. delilah has been created as a capsule collection of carefully formulated cosmetics which offers women a touch of understated luxury they can enjoy every day. YOU YEAR

NEW NEW

As you start the New Year, our team of professional trainers are here to help make sure you keep your fitness resolutions

84

STOKE PARK

Consistency is Key

Tip from Martin James There’s no doubt that at some stage during the New Year you’ll be reading this fitness section of our magazine in hope of finding the magic answer to help transform your body. Unfortunately, there isn’t one. No single food, exercise or potion is going to give you the body of your dreams. However, if there’s one piece of advice I can offer that will help you work towards the body you aspire to have, it is to be consistent. Don’t get overly excited about conjuring up an all-singing-all-dancing master plan to whip yourself into shape. With that said, don’t be afraid to aim big. Challenge yourself, but be realistic about what you’re doing. The last thing you want is to become another statistic of

New Year fitness goals that have crashed and burned before January has even come to an end. That’s why being realistic and being consistent in your execution is vitally important. Set yourself some challenging but achievable goals, and attack them with a sensible approach you can still be doing 6 weeks or 6 months from now. Once you do that, be consistent with it. Eat consistently well, and exercise consistently on a weekly basis. Getting in shape and becoming healthier doesn’t require big grand gestures; it requires you to do the small things consistently. As the saying goes, ‘75% execution all of the time beats 100% execution some of the time’.

The assisted pull-up machine can look intimidating to new gym users, and can look complicated to use, but it’s actually a very simple and useful to use as part of the strength training routine - particularly for those who have never done pull-ups or chin-ups before. To perform the assisted pull-up, set the weight you want to add to the machine. Select a higher load than you think you really need, and then you can reduce the weight slowly as you gain strength.

Assisted Pull-ups

Tip from Yelena Paul

Stand up on the platform and while holding the bars, pointing towards you, stretch your body by lowering yourself down. Then, concentrating on your upper and middle back muscle groups, pull yourself up, and move your chest slightly forward and keep your chin up. When you will start to move down, do it slowly in a controlled movement. Depending on the type of the grip you use, major muscle groups involved would be Latissimus Dorsi, Teres Major, Rhomboids, Lower trapezius, and Biceps.

The Flat Bench Press and how to prevent shoulder injury Tip from Elaina Long The Flat Bench Press (FBP) is one of the most popular chest-strengthening exercises in the gym. It’s a versatile exercise across all training phases such as muscle endurance, hypertrophy, strength, power and speed. However, the high levels of injuries associated with the FBP are primarily caused by the bench itself, which restricts the movement of the scapulae (shoulder blades). This results in stress to the rotator cuff/shoulder joint. Some schools of thought among trainers and strength coaches is to retract and fix the scapula at all times as a sign of good scapula control, but research suggests the scapulae should not be locked if one wants to protect the fragile structures and strengthen around the shoulder joint.

Squats are one of the best compound or multi joint exercises out there, and should definitely be included in some form in your workout. From the most basic variation, the body weight squat, to a full weighted barbell squat, this exercise will work not only your lower body, but will actually benefit your whole body. When done properly, the humble squat can help to burn fat, build muscles, and improve mobility and balance. Strong legs are imperative for staying mobile for longer. To do a squat, stand with your feet just wider than hip width and turned out slightly. Take a deep breath, contract your abs and bend your knees whilst sitting back. Keep chest and shoulders up and make sure you push your knees out to keep them in line with the feet. Descend until your thighs are parallel to the ground. At the bottom of the position, drive upwards immediately and come back to standing. Mobility issues can hinder people to do squats as they are done with certain muscles more than others (often the quadriceps), but there are many things which can be implemented to improve this. Squats are too great of an exercise to ignore - do them to improve your strength, mobility and most importantly to get good glutes! 86

The benefits of the squat

Tip from Sharon Balestrazzi

So, how can we modify the bench press to assist with good movement patterns without causing any risks? The following modification can help with the movement of the scapula whilst performing the FBP, but ensure you have a trainer to supervise this at first. Place two tightly rolled up towels end to end in the middle of the bench and lie supine with the towels longitudinally under the length of the spine, supporting the head and the pelvis. Perform a set or two using just the bar to get used to the feel of it and making sure the bar does not tilt. During this simple modification the scapulae will be able to retract and protract more freely but be careful not to shrug the shoulders. This can be prevented using stretching and activation techniques provided by your trainer.

The Plank Tip from Joe Ogbonnaya The ‘traditional’ plank exercise is performed when you have four points of contact with the floor, usually the toes and forearms, with the elbows directly under the shoulder. The rest of the body is held in a horizontal position with a neutral spine and straight legs. This is one of the best exercises for activating, as well as conditioning the core muscles. However, it also works the glutes, hamstrings, supports proper posture and improves balance. The plank can also be incorporated as a stretch on the calf muscles. There are many variations you can do to add intensity and work different areas of your body. Some of the many benefits of doing the plank on a regular basis are a toned belly, reduced back pain, increased flexibility, improved balance and posture. The plank can also improve your mood (and libido!).

Medicine Ball Slam Tip from Nick Beasant The medicine ball slam is great for developing power, strength and speed. It’s a full body workout which increases heartbeat and burns a good number of calories. It’s also very simple exercise to do. Stand with your feet apart at shoulder width, knees slightly bent, and hold the medicine ball in your hands. Lift the ball over your head with your arms extended, looking straight ahead. Now inhale, bend forward at the waist, and use your core muscles to throw the ball down in front of your feet with as much force as possible, while at the same time contracting the abdomen effectively and exhaling. Let the arms follow through the movement to prevent falling. At the end, the heels should be on the floor and knees slightly bent.

Let the medicine ball bounce off the floor and catch it when it comes back. If it doesn’t bounce, then keep your abdomen contracted and pick up the ball. Lift the ball back to the starting position, inhale and perform another slam.

ESPORTS

Ten reasons why esports is here to stay You may have heard of esports - electronic sports - an exciting digital activity that is growing in popularity across the world. But what is it, how does it compare to traditional sport and what are the benefits? Dominic Sacco from the British Esports Association explains…

Esports is exciting to watch Esports is a proven human-versus-human mind game. It’s essentially competitive video gaming. Tournaments usually consist of amateur or professional gamers competing against one another for a cash prize. These can be viewed online on livestreaming websites like Twitch and YouTube, with some events allowing spectators to attend and watch live. They can be incredibly exciting to watch and play.

It’s like a sport Esports is classified in the UK as a game and not a sport (similar to the likes of chess and bridge). The ‘sport’ in esports may be misleading to some, but like traditional sports, competitive video gaming involves training, skills and reaction times, teamwork and coordination, and of course, a competitive spirit. There will be esports ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and 2022 Asian Games.

3 4 5 6 7

There is something for everyone There are more than 30 different games played competitively. Some are 1v1 games like Street Fighter V and FIFA 18, while others are team-based such as Rocket League (football with cars). Some of the most popular esports games include League of Legends, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

It’s a big business Esports is a fast-growing industry that has attracted a lot of investment in recent years. Revenues are set to reach $696 million in 2017 and $1.5 billion in 2020, according to Newzoo. The biggest tournaments can have millions of pounds in prize pools while top players can earn six figures. The tournament with the highest prize pool is the Dota 2 International, which had an overall pool of around $25 million in 2017.

New jobs are emerging Esports has created hundreds of new jobs over the years. Like traditional sports, there are the players themselves, as well as coaches, presenters and casters, observers who control the in-game camera, journalists, managers, events staff, admins, PR, marketing and sales executives.

8 9 10

There are plenty of benefits Studies have shown that gaming and esports can have some great benefits, when played in moderation as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Esports promotes strategic thinking, teamwork, communication, leadership, performance skills and can build confidence.

It has a burgeoning grassroots scene Esports is not just about mega prize pools and millions of views. It’s for everyone. There are plenty of grassroots tournaments, with opportunities for players, casters and others to get involved. Esports has some fantastic communities on Facebook, Twitter, Discord, Twitch and other platforms.

The UK is on the up The UK has been behind other big territories in esports for some time, such as South Korea and North America, both countries offering their own esports scholarships, big tournaments and plenty of investment and support. However, the UK is up and coming. Firms like Gfinity, ESL, FaceIt and Multiplay are all supporting the UK esports scene with tournaments and initiatives. Now, almost four million Brits have watched esports, according to YouGov.

There are millions of fans Around 1 in 7 people are now aware of esports. According to Newzoo, the number of consumers worldwide that are aware of esports will surpass one billion in 2017. Certain games and tournaments will pull in large numbers of viewers, for example the 2016 League of Legends World Championship was watched by 43 million people.

Traditional sports clubs want in Big sporting brands have moved into esports in recent years. Football clubs such as West Ham, Manchester City and Wolfsburg have signed their own FIFA players or other teams - for example Schalke has its own League of Legends team. Basketball brands like the Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat have also moved into this space, buying organisations like Team Dignitas and Misfits respectively.

About the British Esports Association British esports is a not-for-profit national body established in 2016 to promote esports in the UK, increase its level of awareness, improve standards and inspire future talent. www.britishesports.org

I

f there was ever a brand that embodies everything that popular opinion held conceptions of, then surely Ferrari is it. Power, performance, style, exclusivity, design, technology, it has it all, and, of course, desire - all embodied in one beautiful and very, very fast Italian-sculptured package! I have driven many Ferrari’s in my numerous years as a motoring journalist and the thrill of collecting one has never waned. The butterflies in my stomach as the keys are handed over flutter as wildly as ever and my unbridled child-like excitement at having ‘ownership’ of the car for a long weekend is beyond words. This time I was test-driving the GTC4 Lusso to Amsterdam on a very eagerlyanticipated road trip - my sheer joy was only equalled by that of my three travelling-companions - yes three! Created by the Ferrari Design division, the GTC4 Lusso evolves the shooting brake coupé with a reinterpretation of the concept using evermore streamlined strokes and curves that belie its vast size and estate model. Thus the roomy fourseater, four-wheel drive Grand Touring Coupe, which replaces the uber-successful FF model, was our European-tour ride of choice! Its 12-cylinder engine offers smooth, consistent power and delivers the performance you’d expect of a thoroughbred sports car. Maximum speed is 335 kph and 0-100 kph acceleration is achieved in an eye-watering 3.4 seconds. The car’s drive is ferocious but tamed. Awesome power can be unleashed at any moment yet you always feel confident and in control. The curve of the roof has been lowered whilst retaining incredible headroom in the rear - even for my son who is 6’ 3”. Four passengers cosseted in leather and luxury with sufficient

room in the trunk for four occupants’ luggage! The car is - believe it or not - as beautiful on the inside as it is out. The finest leathers adorn the cabin on the GTC4 Lusso which features their beautifullybalanced Dual Cockpit architecture designed to enhance the shared driving experience of both driver and passenger - exemplified by the Driver Cockpit and a Passenger Cockpit separated by a central divider which houses all of the comfortoriented controls. Actually, the entire Driver Cockpit is new and the use of a smaller, improved airbag has resulted in a more compact steering wheel which allows the instruments behind easier to see through its upper half. The controls have also been redesigned with a nicer shape, function and positioning, with the aim of further improving ergonomics and ease of use controls common to both occupants. Other improvements include the GTC4’s 20% improvement in rigidity of the

car’s chassis attachment points and an upgraded climate control system which is now 25% quieter - all making the cabin experience even more incredible. As we all know, for most supercar enthusiasts it’s only about the numbers. And yet, the number that impresses me most on all the new cars in the Ferrari range is 7! Seven you ask? Well, what we all demand and expect from the world’s coolest brand is world-beating performance, lightening speeds and lots of horsepower. All of that comes as standard equipment on all Ferraris. But what most people don’t realise is that all new Ferrari owners also get complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first seven years of the vehicle’s life from an authorized dealership. Just think about that for a second as I find it truly unbelievable. Seven years of driving your Ferrari and they will do all the scheduled maintenance and keep it prancing wildly, with the only cost to you perhaps a few air-fresheners to hang from the mirror if you so desire! This really kills the old adage that ‘it’s not just the cost of buying but the cost of maintaining a supercar that’s prohibitive’. I had planned on taking numerous beautiful photographs of the car against the backdrop of Amsterdam’s most famous tourist landmarks but, to be honest, every time we stopped, even to get gas, flocks of people gathered to ask questions, admire the car and to take their own ‘selfies’ - it was relentless! What was also relentless was the mile after mile of pure exhilaration you feel driving and manoeuvring this magnificent car - a true Grand Touring Coupe whose real joy is experienced on a grand tour! www.ferrari.com

Captain Vince Murphy’s End of Year Dinner Vince Murphy’s captain’s year sadly came to a close on Friday, 24th November and with over 80 attendees, Vince reminisced on his year in office before handing over the reins to Derek Ball, the incoming Captain. Vince was delighted to confirm that £28,588.30 was raised for his chosen local Charity, SWIPE – a music charity that works with underprivileged children in Slough through music tuition, water sports and police cadet training. The goal was to raise enough money for a mini-bus, trailer and stage which was indeed achieved. During the evening, guest speaker Will Greenwood entertained the members with interesting and amusing anecdotes from his rugby career which was then capped off by the annual prize presentation of trophies from this year’s competition winners.
