Dear Members, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new General Manager of The Harbour Club, Chelsea.

We have plenty of other plans for the future so we can continually reinvest in the facility.

I have worked in the Racquets and Fitness Industry for 20 years; firstly working for Livingwell Health Clubs for 5 years, then David Lloyd Leisure. The David Lloyd Clubs that I have managed are: Maidstone, Basildon, Sidcup, Kingshill, and Raynes Park. The David Lloyd Club in Raynes Park was the largest in the portfolio with over 10,000 members and is one of the largest clubs in Europe. I have also overseen Chigwell and Fulham as well as The Harbour Club, Chelsea for 4 months, shortly after Caroline Clark, the previous GM left the business in 2009.

What I am most excited about is fully embracing our club and giving you the best service possible. The Harbour Club Chelsea is an amazing club, with a lot of history. I am very familiar with the Harbour Club having previously overseen it and am very excited with my new challenge. I look forward to meeting you in the coming months.

On a personal level, I mainly grew up in Esher, Surrey. I went to Daneshill Preparatory School in Oxhott, St Johns Secondary School in Leatherhead, then finished my education at Warwick University. I was a keen tennis and squash player, and my biggest achievement on the sports field was winning the Surrey Schools Tennis Boys Doubles Competition under 18, as well as playing first tennis pair at Warwick. I live in Sevenoaks, Kent with my wife and 4 children. We have been busy improving the club and below are some of the recent areas of refurbishment or changes: • Tennis court backdrops have all been replaced. • The Steam rooms in the Adult Locker rooms have been completely refurbished, along with a re-tile of the steam room in the Wet Spa. • Later in the year we will have a gym trade out for most of our strength equipment on the upper gym level, along with replacing the flooring in the same area. Have you also tried our new Wattbikes in the gym; these are a must for any keen cyclist!!! • I am pleased to confirm the rumours around the lift are true – we will be installing a new lift towards the end of the year. Whilst this may cause some disruption in the short term, I am confident that after the installation everyone will be pleased with the finished result. • There will be a new menu launched later on this year.

Regards,

Charles Jude

General Manager

The connective tissue system is a new way of understanding the body for improving shape, joint pain, performance and health. From what we have been taught, we have all considered how the body works in parts such as how muscles move bones to create energy. Have you considered that the wrapping and containers around the bones and muscles create an elastic energy to propel the body? This is the connective tissue (Fascial) system which has not been talked about much until now in understanding how human form functions. With many natural movements such as walking and squatting, muscles merely work as reactors as the body stretches into length to catapult the body into movement. For example: as you go down into a squat it is the body’s various slings, coming from our feet into our butt, that propel our body rather than muscles contracting in our thighs to create the movement. Which does not suggest that the muscles you feel working don’t help create the movement, it’s the elastic slings which form the catapult to help get the body where it needs to go. These slings contain lines of muscles that link up like sausages with the meat (muscles) encased in (connective tissues) the skin of the sausages which varies from a strong like plastic quality ( for stability) to a very elastic quality (for mobility). These lines, which are known as the anatomy trains, are integral in maintaining posture and alignment in movement. If you feel you are falling behind in your pursuit to reach your fitness goals and overcome joint pain, its almost certain that your connective tissue needs rebalancing and exercised differently than you have tried before. Sean O’Leary is The Harbour Club’s KMI (Kinesis Myofascial Integration) expert. He obtained a Bachelor of Science with majors in Human Movement and Psychology at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia in 1993. During this period he achieved a national swimming ranking for the 50 metres Freestyle before a shoulder injury interrupted his attempt to make the Olympic team. He then began to help others with their physical pursuits by teaching and coaching swimming, as a Personal Trainer and teaching Pilates. Sean also played Australian rules football, water polo and competed in triathlons at a high level. However, injuries continued to limit his progress and this led to an exhaustive

www.harbourclub.com

search for treatments and exercise routines to correct imbalances. “It was not until I received my first series of KMI treatments that I could feel more permanent ease and lasting freedom in my body. This inspired me to become a KMI practitioner in 2006. I have since completed the KMI series with a diverse range of individuals including celebrity clients in music and film, elite athletes, and children.”

Sean offers 4 ways to address connective tissue imbalances: 1. KMI which is a form of movement and manipulation that the client is actively involved in performing movements mainly lying on a table, whilst Sean manipulates the tissue. A great compliment or alternative to traditional methods such as Physio and Osteopathy. See www.kmilondon.com

2. Movement training and conditioning. This is more movement based with some manipulation and is a great compliment or alternative to Personal Training and other exercise (£75 per session, or £700 for 10 sessions) 3. Kinesis Group Classes in the gym Kinesis Space - 2 on 1, or 4 on 1 classes are available at various times during the week (4 week course from £75-£150) 4. Stretch and Strengthen class (45 minutes) – Tuesdays at 7.30am A studio group class which uses aspects of Yoga, Pilates and dynamic movements to open and balance the body, which is free to members Please call Sean for more details on 07986 360 193, or email seankmi@googlemail.com

Running - can you swing both ways? by Wendy Casterton

As the summer holiday season draws to a close hopefully you are looking towards the next few months feeling refreshed and tackling your to-do list with a renewed enthusiasm. Along with January, this time of year is one where we tend to set new goals and strive to make changes happen in our lives, be it looking for a new job, buying or selling our house or restarting our fitness regime. If you are a runner, or thinking of becoming one, you may be making plans to enter races over the winter, and possibly a spring marathon, to keep you motivated over the winter months. However, one of the most difficult things to manage with running is not your commitment to it, but staying injury-free and arriving at the start line of your race in great shape. Our lifestyles require us to spend significant amounts of time sitting which sadly does not translate to having the kind of well-conditioned posture required to stand up and start running. As such, due to its repetitive action, the chance of sustaining some kind of insidious, running volume-related injury is high.

How does sitting posture affect running posture? Whenever we do something for long periods of time, we become quite good at it. And we are all generally very good at sitting. Physical adaptations occur which mean our lower and mid-back musculature becomes very strong, our hip flexor muscles (at the front of the the hip, that help to bring the knee up towards the chest) become short and tight and our gluteus maximus muscles (the big muscles in our bottom) become long and weak. This in itself is not a bad thing provided the status quo is maintained. However, when it comes to asking our bodies to run, these adaptations affect our running posture and in particular the backwards and forwards swing of our legs. These adaptations mean that the active and passive phases of our running gait are compromised. The toe-off and backwards swing action of the leg is the ‘active’ part of the running gait i.e. YOU have control over it. If the gluteus maximus muscle is long and weak, we find it difficult to contract it ‘actively’ to achieve this action. This is further limited by short and tight hip flexor muscles as we are restricted to how far back the leg can swing. Consequently, the ‘passive’ phase, the forward swing of the leg, is also affected. In an ideal running action, the hip flexor muscle is stretched as the leg is actively taken backwards.

When this recoils - passively on our part - the leg automatically swings forwards and underneath us. If we are unable to swing our leg far enough back to allow this recoil action to take place, we then have to actively swing our leg forwards. This further tightens and shortens hip flexor muscles and both the backwards and forwards swing become active, requiring energy. We lose the ‘free’ energy we would otherwise gain from the passive forwards swing. Ultimately this means any mechanical efficiency is lost and running is harder to do!

you need to be able to activate and contract the gluteus maximus muscles to move the leg in to a backwards swing motion. Simple hip flexor stretching and glute strengthening exercises will start to address these sittingrelated postural adaptations. An example of each of these is as follows:

The combination of these limitations, and how we adapt, potentially results in us overusing muscles that are strong, such as our lower back muscles, which can become susceptible to injury. Further resulting injuries can be painful hips, knees and ankles and problems with any muscles in the back, hips and legs. Additionally, we are likely to see our overall running posture adopt a ‘crouched’ position.

2. Glute strengthening exercise: Lie on your back with your knees up and feet flat on the floor. Consciously squeeze your bottom (put your hands on your bottom to make sure you are contracting the muscle), lift your hips off the floor and upwards as high as you can. Hold for a count of five before lowering your hips to the floor. Repeat 10 times.

So what can we do? As with most things in life, it is important to reach some kind of balance and harmony. To improve the backwards and forwards swing of the legs in your running gait, the hip flexors need to be of adequate length and elasticity to enable the leg to swing backwards fully, and then to spring back underneath you when you land. Additionally,

1. Hip flexor stretch: In standing, take one leg behind you into a shallow lunge. Tilt your pelvis forwards, in a Elvis Presley-style thrust. Hold for 30-60 seconds. Repeat with the other leg.

These exercises will not be a panacea for all running-related injuries but for most runners, will do no harm. And they may just be enough to injury-proof your running to enable you to achieve your running goals. For more information on running, running posture and running-related injuries, please contact Wendy Casterton on wendycasterton@hotmail.com. Wendy is a personal trainer in the gym and is also studying a physiotherapy degree.

Save the Glutes

by Kunjan Gurung

Some years ago a group of researchers did a study to see if Chimpanzees could stand erected and walk like humans. Not long into the experiment the anthropologists had to abandon the experiment because the Chimps started to get heart failures. The conclusion-They don’t walk upright because it hurts, it is draining and inefficient. Humans on the other hand have this muscle called the Gluteus Maximus (the butt) which creates a bio-mechanical advantage to keep us upright. But that is not to say we are utilising this advantage! Sitting on our Gluteus Maximus all day is inhibiting our ability to use them resulting to inefficient

movement patterns, injuries, bad posture and poor athletic abilities! Gluteus Maximus is a stabiliser muscle of the pelvis (the hip), which also play an important functional role in our body alignment to support the lumbar vertebrae (the back) and the entire lower body. Strong Gluteus Maximus are essential in almost every sport. They are responsible for accelerating, decelerating, changing direction and creating explosive power! My background: I specialise in a holistic approach, sport specific, injury prevention, body composition and general wellbeing. I

am an ex professional football player from Nepal. And my ethos in life is “the way you do anything is the way you do everything”. Please may we remind all swimmers, including children, that they must shower before entering the water and wear a bathing cap if you have long hair. A simple shower before swimming ensures good water quality and creates a more pleasant environment for all swimmers.

Menu We are entering a period of change in the restaurant as current trends and customer requests are evolving in the gym and leisure environment. We have now started doing the ground work for a new menu, we have the direction we want the menu to go towards (even more healthy & nutritious), but in this process it is always important to us to get feedback from our members into what you would like to see on the menu. If you have any particular preferences please speak to myself, one of the restaurant supervisors or pop it on a comment card at reception. Part of the new menu will be providing much more nutritional information and taking dietary and allergy needs into consideration. The kids food offering is going to be one of the major focal points, so mum and dads if you have any requests please do get in touch.

Events For the Autumn term we have added a few new events to our calendar which no doubt will be well received. The first is a ‘Family Fun Day’ which will include activities throughout the club on the day finished off by a gathering in the restaurant for some food and drink. The second is a Children’s Disco which we will be holding in the beginning of December, giving all the children in the club a party of their own. This again will take place in the restaurant with food, drink and entertainment being provided on the night. We will also be holding a Members Feedback Forum on Tuesday 12th November between 7pm – 9pm. The Forum is an opportunity for members to meet the team and give your feedback on the Club. We will also be giving members an opportunity to bring along guests to the Club free of charge. This event is happening on 25th – 27th October and also 20th – 22nd December. Please contact our Sales Team for further details and to make a booking for this event. e mail mship.chelsea@harbourclub.co.uk or telephone 0207 751 9410.

The highlight of this term will be ‘The Harbour Club Winter Party Celebrating our 20th Anniversary.’ This will be taking place on Thursday the 21st November 2013 and will include a complimentary bar with canapés courtside, whilst the Porsche tennis league finals take place. The prize giving will then take place in the restaurant with food, drink and entertainment on offer. For all these events and any others that will be added to the calendar keep your eyes on the notice boards through the club. If you would like to hold a private function in the club please get in touch and together we will create the perfect occasion for you and your guests. With adequate space available we are able to cater for parties in excess of 100 guests, from ‘Champagne & Canapés’ to ‘Formal Dinners’. Family Fun Day: 12th October 2013 The Harbour Club Winter Party: 21st November 2013 All Star Children’s Disco: 6th December 2013

Exhibitions As many of you are aware the exhibitions room has changed location, and for those of you who haven’t popped your head in to have a gander, it is located on your right as you enter the club before reception. This term we will be holding the popular Christmas Fair again, it’s an opportunity to get all our exhibitors in over a few days to provide you with as much choice as you need for those Christmas presents or if you just looking to spoil yourself a bit. Details of the exhibitors that will be present will be provided closer to the time. If you would like any information regarding the Exhibitions Room or our current Exhibitors please contact Heli on 0207 751 9478 or exhibitions@harbourclub.co.uk. Christmas Fair: 2nd – 4th December 2013 We look forward to seeing you all in the Restaurant soon. Stuart and the team.
