American Cheese Month in America’s Dairyland

May is American Cheese Month and nowhere else in the country will you find the same concentration of innovation and expertise at work than in Wisconsin.

When we celebrate American cheese, we celebrate award-winning, irresistibly delicious Wisconsin Cheese. Whether it’s an aged cheddar, funky blue, or a Wisconsin Original, they can all be found in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin’s signature industry is dairy. It’s such an important part of their culture, that their license plates bear the slogan “America’s Dairyland.” Wisconsin’s dairy farm families produce more than 29 billion pounds of milk each year, making Wisconsin one of the nation’s leading dairy producers. Wisconsin’s residents can feel proud that their state is a leader in dairy, they can also feel good about the fact that it contributes more than $43.4 billion to the state’s economy each year. The Wisconsin dairy industry creates jobs and supports local businesses. It contributes to the local tax base that funds their public services, like schools, fire departments and parks. The industry’s strong tradition of environmental stewardship helps conserve Wisconsin resources and preserve its beautiful countryside.

There’s a reason when you think of Wisconsin, you think of cheese. Even though Wisconsin is just one state of 50, they craft nearly half of the nation’s specialty cheese!

It’s no wonder this state is known for its cheese, Wisconsin offers the world’s only Master Cheesemaker program. You’ve heard of a Ph.D., but have you heard of a PhCheese? Otherwise known as the Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker Program, this rigorous study of cheese is an elite accomplishment earned by only 80 talented cheesemakers in Wisconsin. In fact, it’s one of only two such certifications in the whole world!

From curds to cheddar, blue to brick, Wisconsin cheesemakers can do it all. They like to blend tradition with innovation in order to create a wide variety of cheeses that you just can’tget anywhere else.

What better way to celebrate American Cheese month than with products from the state of cheese! Sponsored by the American Cheese Society, May is meant to be a celebration of North America’s delicious cheeses, and the farmers, cheesemakers, retailers and cheesemongers who bring them to consumers. It is your chance to spread the word and experience the wonders of Wisconsin. Help support and promote amazing products, local communities and passionate producers.
