EPIGRAM BOOKS FICTION PRIZE 2016 LONGLIST

Lieutenant Kurosawa's Errand Boy Warran Kalasegaran During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, an eight-year-old Tamil boy is separated from his father, forced to work for the Japanese military police and renamed Nanban. He learns their language and customs, studies their martial arts and prays to their Emperor. While watching the cruelty with which the Imperial Army rules Singapore, he becomes just as ruthless to survive. Twenty years later, a talented, racially ambiguous seamstress named Papatti uses her sewing skills to fight for Singapore’s merger with Malaya. She meets a cunning politician who takes an interest beyond her sewing abilities. Through the turbulence of merger, independence and race riots, she must rely on her wits and courage to see her way through. Two lives destined to intersect, from the 1940s to the 1960s. Through war, political turmoil, and ultimately reconciliation. Warran Kalasegaran studied Politics with International Studies at the University of Warwick, and graduated with a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Tokyo. His maternal grandparents were orphaned during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, which sparked his interest in this period of the nation’s history. He currently works at Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Lieutenant Kurosawa’s Errand Boy is his first novel.

Once We Were There Bernice Chauly

Journalist Delonix Regia’s story begins at the close of the Asian financial crisis, with the hedonistic underground drug scene in 1998 Kuala Lumpur setting the stage for a heady cocktail of revolution, anger and idealism. She witnesses first-hand the changes in the city after the genesis of Malaysia’s Reformasi movement, and the changes in her own life as she settles down, gets married and gives birth. But then she finds herself driven to madness and despair as she tries to claw back the idyllic family life she has built around herself, along the way unearthing the terrible secrets of KL, where babies are sold, and women and children are trafficked with sometimes fatal consequences. Bernice Chauly is the award-winning author of five books of poetry and prose; going there and coming back (1997), The Book of Sins (2008), Lost in KL (2008), Growing Up With Ghosts (2011) and Onkalo (2013, “Direct, honest and powerful” —JM Coetzee). Born in George Town, Penang to Chinese-Punjabi teachers, she read Education and English Literature in Canada as a government scholar. She was an Honorary Fellow at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program (IWP) in 2014, has served as Festival Director of the George Town Literary Festival since 2011, and currently lectures at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC). Her photographs and films have been exhibited and screened worldwide.

The Brigadier's Daughter Paul Callan Jin leads a mundane life in Singapore with his chicken rice stall, his best friend Seng, and the occasional hassles from his customers. But when he meets his wholesaler’s beautiful granddaughter, his mind is cast back to the last time he was truly in love… more than 50 years ago. When the Eurasian daughter of a British brigadier steps into Jin’s life, the teenage boy is thrown into heady distraction. Their nascent mutual attraction blossoms against many obstacles, including their sexual naïveté. Past and present intertwine to reveal a lifetime of secrets that unfold into a tragedy that will echo for decades. Paul Callan is also the author of The Dulang Washer (2011) and Shadows Beneath the Fronds (2013). After many years in business, he turned to writing historical fiction of Southeast Asia. He now divides his time between homes in Kuala Lumpur and London, and is currently writing his fourth novel.

Launch Pad Shelly Bryant

A science park creates synthetic life to repopulate the oceans, but to ruinous effect. A local retelling brings the tragic story of Sweeney Todd to colonial Singapore. And a far-future heiress falls in love with an alien life form and has to make an existential decision. Singapore has long recognised and utilised its own potential as a launch pad due to its geographical location, cementing its place as a melting pot of cultures and languages. In this collection of a dozen short stories, Shelly Bryant examines the speculative and strange results of this long-term mosaic, and what it means for Singapore’s past, present and future. Shelly Bryant divides her time between Shanghai and Singapore, working as a poet, writer, and translator. She is the author of seven volumes of poetry, a pair of travel guides for the cities of Suzhou and Shanghai, and a book on classical Chinese gardens. Shelly’s poetry has appeared in journals, magazines and websites around the world, as well as in several art exhibitions. Her translation of Sheng Keyi’s Northern Girls was longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2012. Launch Pad is her first fiction collection. 978981 4785204 160 pp

Jennani Durai is a former journalist who has covered crime, education, religion and travel; and a VONA/Voices Fiction Fellow for 2016. In 2015, she co-authored the official commemorative book of Singapore’s 50th birthday, Living the Singapore Story. Gull Between Heaven and Earth Boey Kim Cheng Du Fu (杜甫; 712–770) is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets in China’s vast literary history, but before he was celebrated for his concise verse, he was a young man who struggled to make his mark on the world. This long-awaited first novel by acclaimed author Boey Kim Cheng tells the story of Du Fu’s life during the Tang Dynasty with elegance and passion, revealing an existence fraught with disappointment, war, unrest, and triumph. Boey Kim Cheng is a multi-award-winning Singapore-born poet, and a 1996 recipient of the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award. He emigrated to Australia in 1997, but returned in 2013 as one of Nanyang Technological University’s writers-inresidence; he is currently Associate Professor in the NTU Division of English. In 2007 he co-founded Mascara Literary Review, the first Australian literary journal to promote Asian Australian writing, and in 2013 co-edited the groundbreaking anthology Contemporary Asian Australian Poets. Boey has published five collections of poetry, including Clear Brightness (selected by The Straits Times as one of the Best Books of 2012); as well as Between Stations, a celebrated travel memoir that is being reissued by Epigram Books in 2017. Early Readers PERCY & PAM #2

The Mysterious Chicken Rice Recipe It’s not every day in Singapore that you’d find a polar bear at the hairdresser’s getting a ‘furcut’. But Percy’s fur is an unruly mess. When best friends Percy and Pam stumble upon a recipe for chicken rice that’s been dropped outside the hairdresser’s, they set out to find its owner. After all, any serious foodlover knows that a recipe for perfectly tender chicken and deliciously fragrant rice is simply too good to lose! With the help of a friendly shop assistant, and a stall-owner at the nearby wet market, Percy and Pam piece together the clues to solve the mystery and, as always, make time to enjoy some tasty treats along the way. PERCY & PAM #3

Treasure in the Christmas Log Cake It’s Christmas and chocolate-guzzling Percy the polar bear and his best friend, Pam, are preparing to tuck into all the delicious food that the festive season brings.

JULY/SEPTEMBER Ruth Wan-Lau grew up in Toa Payoh, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Singapore. She was fortunate to live 30 steps away from a huge library and practically grew up among its shelves. These days, Ruth writes because her three book-loving children keep feeding her story ideas. She still visits the library in Toa Payoh, and always gets a kick out of finding her own books there now. She is the best-selling author of the Timmy & Tammy series. Eliz Ong’s favourite subject at school was Art. Even when she wasn’t in Art class she would be doodling pictures of animals and plants all over her exercise books. She went on to study Fine Art at Nanyang Academy and now has a job where she gets paid to doodle all day long. Eliz lives with her husband and son at home in Singapore where she also likes to grow her own vegetables. ALSO IN THE SERIES RIGHTS Rights

But when Percy greedily sneaks himself a slice of the Christmas log cake given to Pam’s parents as a gift, he doesn’t expect to bite into something hard and shiny hidden inside. And so the adventure begins for the clever duo who set off to unravel the mystery behind the chocolate-buried treasure.

The Zany Zombie-fest Lesley-Anne & Monica Lim

Danny and Melody are back together again, except this time, they’re in Melody’s world! Welcome to Singapore 2135, where cars travel the skyways, the grass is so soft you can sleep on it, and everything runs perfectly. Danny is thrilled with the brilliant gadgets...but some things are not quite what they seem. In The Zany Zombie-fest, Danger Dan, Gadget Girl and Power Paws come face-to-face with the horrifying monsters of Haw Par Villa… and we’re not even talking about those in the Ten Courts of Hell! The superheroes have to defuse the situation or risk becoming zombies themselves. Will they triumph? Or will this House of Horrors haunt them forever? Lesley-Anne & Monica Lim are a daughter-andmother writing team. Sometimes their roles seem reversed; Lesley-Anne eats her veggies and occasionally has to force Monica to do the same. Monica runs her own writing business, blogs about education and is also the author of The Good, the Bad and the PSLE.

Lion Boy and Drummer Girl Pauline Loh Lion dancers are the new sensations in Asia, and none are as charming or handsome as US import Ricky Ang. But while the rest of the Leopop boys aspire to be the lion head, Ricky would rather goof around as the Big Head Doll. Ironically, drummer girl Ong Ying Ying is the biggest cynic of this Leopop wave. “Don’t fall for a lion dancer!” her mother had always warned her. “He will just break your heart.” Pauline Loh is an award-winning writer with 30 years of writing experience. She has published 11 adult non-fiction books, 3 youth books and 7 children’s storybooks. She is a winner of First Time Writers and Illustrators Publishing Initiative 2009 and first runnerup for Scholastic Asian Book Award 2012. Her books have been shortlisted for Hedwig Anuar Book Award 2015, Samsung KidsTime Author’s Award 2015 and Singapore Book Awards 2016. She is also Director of a non-profit organisation called Women Empowered for Work and Mothering (WEWAM); and an ambassador of Singapore Memory Project (SMP). She mentors book authors; conducts Assembly Talks and Author Visits in schools and is a Ministry of Education registered trainer. She formerly worked as a journalist, as an editor of a magazine and in corporate communications. She is currently a book editor. Pauline is married with three children.

MOUNT EMILY #4

Goodbye, Mount Emily Low Ying Ping

In the concluding book of the Mount Emily series, Patsy and Elena are now in Secondary Four and face having to leave Mount Emily Girls’ School by the end of the year. However, they soon find that graduating from their beloved school is the least of their concerns, as unexpected circumstances lead them to have a final showdown with the Midnight Warriors, and in so doing, change the course of time travel forever. Low Ying Ping holds a Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Warwick. Her poems have appeared in Singa, the journal of the National University of Singapore Centre for the Arts; and QLRS (Quarterly Literary Review Singapore).

Between Stations Boey Kim Cheng

Singapore-born poet Boey Kim Cheng meditates on emigration and loss during a year of travelling after leaving his native land to settle in Australia. He makes detours through India, China, Egypt and Morocco, haunted by the memories of family and vestiges of old Singapore. This travel memoir is being published in Singapore for the first time, and includes a new afterword by Boey and new photos. It was first published in Australia in 2009. Boey Kim Cheng is a multi-award-winning Singapore-born poet and a 1996 recipient of the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award. He emigrated to Australia in 1997, but returned in 2013 as one of Nanyang Technological University’s writers-inresidence; he is currently associate professor in the NTU Division of English. He has published five collections of poetry, including Clear Brightness, which was selected by The Straits Times as one of the Best Books of 2012. His writing is frequently studied in tertiary and university institutions in Singapore and abroad. Boey co-founded Mascara Literary Review in 2007, the first Australian literary journal to promote Asian Australian writing, and in 2013 co-edited the groundbreaking anthology Contemporary Asian Australian Poets. In 2017, Epigram Books is releasing his first novel, Gull Between Heaven and Earth, on the life of the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu.

Mee Siam Mai Hum Some of the Darnedest Things Our Politicians Say

Edited by Edmund Wee Illustrated by Jacqueline Goh Mee Siam Mai Hum is the first-ever published compilation of the most memorable quotes uttered by Singapore’s politicians. You will find verbal gaffes, stretched analogies, shockers and mind-bogglers that have created news headlines and stirred up the cybersphere. Some of the quotes are illustrated by Jackie Goh of The Fingersmith Letterpress. Edmund Wee is the Publisher and CEO of Epigram Books, a Singaporean imprint that champions local literature and writers. Best known for its bestselling graphic novel The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye and children’s series The Diary of Amos Lee, it has also published landmark translations of novels and short story collections by Cultural Medallion winners, fresh fiction by emerging authors, and republished out-of-print novels for a new generation of readers. For his efforts, Edmund was included in the Straits Times Life! Power List of arts, entertainment and lifestyle players five times in the last six years. Jacqueline (Jackie) Goh is a print operator and illustrator at The Fingersmith Letterpress studio in Singapore. Besides the love of being covered in ink, she enjoys tinkering with her analog cameras and dabbles in occasional woodwork. She is usually found buried in her sketchbook doodling not so serious things and journaling inspirations from around the world.

Chiam: In Opposition, 1985-2011 Loke Hoe Yeong Two years after he was elected into Parliament in 1984, Chiam See Tong, Singapore’s longestserving opposition politician, found himself alone in the House. This second part of Chiam’s biography takes us through those tumultuous political years of the Marxist Conspiracy, the introduction of the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) Scheme, and the amendment of the Constitution to provide for a popularly elected President. Painfully expelled from the Singapore Democratic Party, the party that he himself had formed, Chiam continued his political career with the Singapore People’s Party but, eventually, his popularity waned and his health declined. He passed his torch to his wife, Lina, and quietly retired from politics. Loke Hoe Yeong masterfully tells the story of a man whose imprint on Singapore politics is indelible, but even giants ultimately fall.
