Jerks Won’t Give You Flowers Moderna de Pueblo
This graphic novel documents the trials and tribulations of one young woman’s quest to find love in the big city.
Too cool for her small hometown, yet too provincial for the metropolis, she’s the Moderna de Pueblo (Small Town Hipster). In her search for a job, an apartment and love, she finds that big citylife isn’t all that she imagined. With the wealth of new experiences comes an equal wealth of jerks in all shapes and sizes: the Classic Jerk, the Cultural Snob Jerk, the Tough Guy Jerk, the One-Night-Only Jerk, the Jerk Jerk (whose jerk-like behaviour is self-aware and premeditated)… it’s a tough world out there. But, armed with two unshakeable girlfriends and a generous dose of gumption, our heroine takes the city on, one jerk at a time. Moderna de Pueblo (Small Town Hipster) is the pseudonym of Raquel Córcoles, an illustrator, writer and social media influencer in Spain. She has worked for Cuore and El Jeves (Spanish magazines), and published her first book Soy de Pueblo (I’m From a Small Town) under Glénat.

Packed with comic book references, intricately detailed and rich with history, this is the Singapore story the likes no one has ever seen. Sonny Liew is a comic artist, painter and illustrator whose work includes titles for DC Vertigo, Marvel Comics, Image Comics and First Second Books. He has received Eisner nominations for his art on Wonderland (Disney), as well as for spearheading Liquid City (Image Comics), a multi-volume comics anthology featuring creators from Southeast Asia. His Malinky Robot series is a Xeric grant recipient and winner of the Best Science Fiction Comic Album Award at the Utopiales SF Festival in Nantes (2009).

Singapore’s Richest Literary Prize Launched
I
n April 2015, Epigram Books announced the launch of the inaugural Epigram Books Fiction Prize. With a prize of $20,000 and a publishing contract, it is the richest literary award of its kind in Singapore. Over a six month submission period, Epigram Books was incredibly heartened by an overwhelming response of 69 submissions from writers of all ages (with the youngest and oldest entrant being 15 and 73 years of age respectively) and from all walks of life. Proving that there is a burgeoning interest in writing amongst the young, writers in their twenties were the most prolific, contributing to 28 percent of submissions. After a long internal deliberation, four shortlisted novels were chosen for the consideration of the judging panel (which consisted of lawyer and bestselling author Adrian Tan, leading actress Janice Koh, NUS professor Philip Holden and chaired by Epigram Books Publisher and CEO Edmund Wee). The prize ceremony took place during a gala dinner at the Pan Pacific Singapore. It was attended by the short-listed candidates, the judging panel, key representatives of the publishing industry, event sponsors and members of the media.
O Thiam Chin emerged as the winner with his debut novel, Now That It’s Over (formerly titled The Infinite Sea). Described by the judges as a novel that gave insight into “how little we know the people whom we are in relationships with,” the story drew praise for its compelling plot, the quality of its writing and the strength of its character development. “We want to reward excellence in contemporary Singapore creative writing and to encourage the readership of high-quality Singapore literature by publishing the winning and shortlisted entries,” said Edmund Wee. The release of O's book is therefore in conjunction with its three contenders: Death of a Perm Sec by Wong Souk Yee, Sugarbread by Balli Kaur and Let’s Give It Up for Gimme Lao! by Sebastian Sim. As a publisher that is constantly on the search for the next great Singapore novel, Epigram Books is very appreciative of all the support that the prize has received. This response has reaffirmed our belief in the importance of cultivating and championing local writers and their work, and we look forward to receiving the submissions for this year’s book prize. 35

Let’s Give It Up for Gimme Lao! Sebastian Sim
Finalist for the 2015 Epigram Books Fiction Prize.
From the tender age of six, Gimme Lao lives by the following motto: “I don’t aspire to be nice. I do what is necessary to get what I want.” Born on the night of the nation’s independence, Gimme is cheated of the honour of being Singapore’s firstborn son by a vindictive nurse. This forms the first of three things Gimme never knew about himself, the second being the circumstances surrounding his parents’ marriage, and the third being the profound (but often unintentional) impact he has on other people’s lives. Sebastian Sim, 49, grew up in a one-room HDB flat with his parents, who were part of the pioneer generation that saw through Singapore’s independence.
‘The plot wanders in an apparently artless, but in fact rather artful way… There’s a real sense of control here, and a consistent, organic voice…’ Philip Holden editor of Writing Singapore and EBFP judge
After graduating from junior college, he spent the next thirty years clocking work experience in different industries; he was variously a bartender at Boat Quay, an assistant outlet manager at MacDonalds, an insurance salesman, a prison officer in a maximum security prison and a croupier in a casino. Over the same period, he indulged in two concurrent love affairs— backpacking and creative writing. He is currently working in a community club as an executive and has written three Chinese novels under the pen name Yueguan Ming.

Death of a Perm Sec
NEW
Wong Souk Yee Death of a Perm Sec is a mystery novel about the demise of the permanent secretary of the housing ministry, Chow Sze Teck, accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes over his career. Set in 1980s Singapore, the novel examines the civil servant’s death, which first appears to be suicide. But the involvement of a CID inspector who might not be what he seems leads the deceased’s family discover there may be far more sinister circumstances behind his death, reaching to the very top echelons of government. The novel exposes the dark heart of power politics, from the country’s tumultuous post-independence days to the socio-political landscape of the 1980s. Wong Souk Yee, 57, is a playwright and former political detainee, who contested the 2015 General Election as a member of the Singapore Democratic Party. An adjunct lecturer at the National University of Singapore, she co-founded the nowdefunct theatre group Third Stage. In 1987, she was detained for allegedly taking part in a Marxist conspiracy against the government. She co-directed and co-wrote the play Square Moon, staged in 2013, about detention without trial.
Finalist for the 2015 Epigram Books Fiction Prize.
‘The detective-story style plot provides movement and suspense, and there’s an interesting series of discoveries…The author has a story to tell, and there’s a certain raw power in the narrative.’ Philip Holden editor of Writing Singapore and EBFP judge

Balli Kaur Jaswal Sugarbread follows the life of 10-year-old Punjabi-Sikh girl, Pin: the shortest girl in her class, recipient of an embarrassing monthly bursary, and target of her racist bus driver’s slurs. Her father’s obsession with winning the lottery shifts Pin’s juvenile observations to her graceful and secretive mother, and through Ma’s cooking, Pin learns how to distinguish the subtleties in her mother’s moods, and finds out just how little she knows about who her mother really is. Balli Kaur Jaswal is the author of Inheritance, a universal story of family, identity and belonging. Born in Singapore and raised in Japan, Russia and the Philippines, she studied creative writing in the United States, and has received writing fellowships from the University of East Anglia and Nanyang Technological University. Baby Zoey Our Search for Life and Family
NEW
Olivia Chiong Parenting is already not easy, what more same-sex parenting in conservative Singapore? Entrepreneur Olivia Chiong chronicles her journey with her partner Irene, from marriage to their struggles to conceive their daughter Zoey. Olivia Chiong blogs about her personal life with her wife Irene and daughter Zoey in Singapore on her website www. olivia.thechiongs.com where she shares her insights on same-sex parenting, relationships and life hacks. A long-time volunteer with queer women activist platform Sayoni, she co-founded Singapore’s only same-sex parenting support group Rainbow Parents SG with her wife. She believes in living life authentically and is absolutely unafraid to talk about the good, bad and the ugly.
Entrepreneur and blogger Olivia Chiong chronicles her struggles to conceive as a same-sex parent.
Her first book, The Unbusy Entrepreneur (self published in December 2015) focuses on using her over 10 years of personal entrepreneurial experience in the events industry and with multiple startups, to help small business owners implement operational and productivity hacks.

We Love Geylang Serai
NEW
Urban Sketchers Singapore Geylang Serai has served as a hub for the Malay and Indonesian communities in Singapore since pre-independence days. It was home to the Malay Village, built in 1989 to showcase kampong life and sell ethnic handicrafts, traditional costumes and souvenirs. In the fasting month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya Puasa, the area comes alive with performances and bazaars, as families shop for new clothes and delicious goodies.
In We Love Geylang Serai, the artists of Urban Sketchers Singapore offer a glimpse into the heart of a bustling ethnic enclave known for its fascinating mix of the old and new.
Follow the artists from Urban Sketchers Singapore through this eastern neighbourhood as they document its key landmarks and scenes of daily life, and feast your eyes on the sketchers’ delicious depictions of nasi padang, biryani, satay, otah and other Malay and Indian dishes at the renovated two-storey Geylang Serai New Market and Food Centre. Urban Sketchers Singapore is an informal group of artists who draw the places they visit, capturing what they see from direct observation on location. Visit www.usk.sg for more details of their sketching sojourns.

Chua Chye Teck Chua Chye Teck is a passionate collector of images, memories and spaces, taking photographs of the visible to indicate things invisible. His work is inspired by the conflicting field of spatial and social relations within specific environments, generally urban surroundings; it is a matter of people, their actions with respect to the space they occupy, inhabit or merely cross briefly.
