More Stories of Singapore We started Epigram Books in July 2011 to tell stories of Singapore, and eventually the region. As we approach our third birthday next month, I am happy to share that our list stands at close to 150 titles with another 50 for this year alone. In championing local writing, it was clear we could not avoid politics. Ahead of Singapore’s 50th year of independence, our upcoming titles include a biography of the well-loved opposition politician Chiam See Tong, a picture book on Lee Kuan Yew’s childhood, a collection of political cartoons on LKY by Morgan Chua, and Eisner-nominated artist Sonny Liew’s tribute to a pioneering cartoonist in The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye. Our best-selling teenaged heroes, Amos Lee, Sherlock Sam, Danger Dan and the Triple Nine Sleuths continue to excite and entertain young readers. This time Amos tramps through the jungles of Sarawak; Sherlock embarks on a three-book search for a fiendish mastermind; Danny meets Queen Elizabeth and the trio of amateur detectives stumbles on to their final revelation. A new series, Girl Overboard, about an American-Chinese student in an international school coping with school and Singapore, joins our intrepid teens. We will also launch a new series of celebrity picture books, fairy tales retold by prominent Singaporeans, starting with KF Seetoh’s take on Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Adrian Pang’s version of Hansel and Gretel and Glen Goei’s twist on Little Red Riding Hood. The authors will donate their royalties (with matching amounts from Epigram Books) from the first printing to charity.
Food blogger Dr Leslie Tay’s handy guide to shiokalicious hawker food, the sold-out Only the Best!, is back in a new edition. Two restaurants with irrepressible owner-chefs, Artichoke’s Bjorn Shen and Onaka’s Rosalind Lim and Jason Vito, offer their recipes nearer the festive season. On the literary front, we have new fiction from Cyril Wong, newcomer Justin Ker and translations from Tamil author Latha and Cultural Medallion winners Yeng Pway Ngon, You Jin and Mohamed Latiff Mohamed. Another blockbuster for students is a book on how to succeed in advertising—and life, by Singapore’s most successful adman Adrian Tan who has been described as someone with more disabilities than degrees. We’re calling it The M(Ad) Towkay of Singapore. Thank you for your support and happy reading.

Lesley-Anne and Monica Lim are a motherand-daughter writing team. Monica Lim is the mother and Lesley-Anne Tan is the daughter, although sometimes their roles seem reversed. Lesley-Anne eats her veggies and occasionally has to force Monica to do the same. She’s weird that way. (“No, I’m not!” says Lesley-Anne.) Monica runs her own writing business, has a blog on education and published a book in October 2013 entitled The Good, the Bad and the PSLE. Lesley-Anne is still in school so she mostly writes essays and papers, which isn’t quite as fun. Danger Dan is their first writing project together. The idea for the character Danny came about from their experience living with a highly imaginative little boy obsessed with superheroes and comics. If Lesley-Anne could have a super power, she would choose the ability to stop time, so that she can finish studying for her exams and writing books in no time at all. Monica’s preferred super power is mind control, so that she can make Lesley-Anne stop dreaming about time freezes and get back to work.

An acclaimed editorial cartoonist relooks a watershed political event, its players and its impact, 25 years on.
GRAPHIC NOVELS – LEAD – 12
Tiananmen Morgan Chua The events that took place at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China on 4 June 1989 attracted international attention and sparked outrage at the Chinese government’s military advance on student demonstrators. Twenty-five years on, a new generation of Chinese has grown up in a country that continues to grapple with issues of political liberalisation, democracy and censorship. First published in 1989, acclaimed former Far Eastern Economic Review editorial cartoonist Morgan Chua’s Tiananmen takes an emotional yet incisive look at the aftermath of the 4th June protests and the international response they provoked. This updated edition commemorates the 25th anniversary of this watershed incident with new cartoons and a look at where the key figures involved then, are today.

One day he met a duck named Duckie who had trouble swimming. So Tibby helped Duckie, first by putting lily pads on his clawed feet. When that didn’t work, he put spider webs, then a short plank. After a while they figured Duckie may be a land duck—until she started flapping her wings. And when she soared towards a group of eagles, Tibby finally figured out that Duckie was a duck-eagle!

The Goddess in the Living Room Latha Translated from the Tamil
FICTION – LEAD – 28
The Goddess in the Living Room is an unprecedented collection of disturbing and darkly beautiful stories of the ‘other’—the female voice in Singapore Tamil literature. The stories cover a broad range of social issues without ever losing momentum and at times are provocatively irreverent, but always honest and insightful. The multilayered tales of femininity, botched relationships, psychological breakdown, family tensions, struggle and negotiation for space and identity as a ‘minority gender’ within a maledominated ethnic minority, all take place outside comfortable and familiar patterns in the distinctive Singapore multi-ethnic social milieu, providing the space for excitement, danger and transformation.

Profound and outré flash fiction with a Singaporean flavour.
The Space Between the Raindrops Pablo Neruda tries to compose a poem on Isla Negra, as a man considers cheating on his parking coupon at a Maxwell Road carpark. A bed thief breaks into a HDB flat every day, only to steal a few hours’ rest. Singapore is interviewed as a psychiatric patient on National Day. Contemplative and filled with possibility, each evanescent story inhabits the fleeting, unrepeatable place between the falling droplets on our island of rain. The Space Between the Raindrops is a remarkable collection of short stories told by a startling new voice.

In the late 1970s, You Jin spent several years in Saudi Arabia when her husband was offered a job in Jeddah. This is the resulting collection of short stories—a fictionalised account of her time in the Middle East. How will a young Singaporean writer with an infant son cope with life in this strange, often hostile, environment, in a time before the Internet and cheap air travel? With her trademark chatty style and wry humour, You Jin chronicles her encounters with viciously bored expat wives, mistreated migrant workers, and foreigners who unwittingly fall foul of draconian local laws, as well as her many misadventures negotiating an unfamiliar culture. What strategies will she need to survive life in the desert?

Poignant and observational essays from world-class traveller You Jin.
In Time, Out of Place
To read a You Jin travel essay is to journey to a specific time and location, and to encounter individual people there who bring the place near, making it more tangible for the reader than it could otherwise be. You Jin brings to her travel writing the same wit and storytelling ability evident in her fiction, adept at capturing a whimsical incident and weaving it into a narrative that is both compelling and amusing. Many of You Jin’s journeys occurred at interesting times during worldwide events, as is evident in the early essays presented here, which tell of her travels in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, when the region was undergoing dramatic change. Nearly every continent is represented in this volume, beautifully captured with her trademark spirited good humour, bringing to life the vastness of the globe we inhabit, as well as more intimate encounters with the people she meets along the way, be they fellow travellers or residents of the places she visits.

Trivialities About Me and Myself Yeng Pway Ngon Translated from the Chinese by Howard Goldblatt
F I C T I O N – C U LT U R A L M E D A L L I O N – 3 2
The Chinese protagonist of Trivialities about Me and Myself, a journalist turned entrepreneur, possesses a split personality. “Me” is a figure consumed by greed and sexual desire, two impulses that undermine his careers, his two marriages, and his relationship with his son. Throughout the novel he engages in a dialogue with his other identity, the moralistic “Myself ”, whose principled stances try but usually fail to win over his other half. The protagonist’s lifetime, from childhood to his dying days in a rest home, parallels the modern history of Singapore itself and its evolution from a colonised city to a consumer-oriented nation, one in which an English-language educational system and commercial interests suppress indigenous languages and traditions. While the meticulously described action takes place in the city, the real setting is within the psyche of the narrator, whose two halves are engaged in an epic struggle for dominance.

Love’s Pilgrim
Love’s Pilgrim is the story of a man grieving after the sudden death of his wife in a car accident. Camping out beside her grave, he reminisces about their past together. His memories become increasingly blurred and fragmented, as he grapples with his past as an ex-political detainee and literary activist, and very soon he is unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Mohamed Latiff Mohamed’s novel, hailed as a landmark in modernist Malay fiction, is an unsettling tale of psychic disintegration and obsessive love.

FICTION – SINGAPORE CLASSICS – 35
SINGAPORE CLASSICS is a series of unforgettable out-of-print novels by Singapore’s best writers, republished for a new generation of readers.
“ An eclectic collection of short stories that is original and often deeply moving.” —Dave Chua, author of The Beating and Other Stories
Ten Things My Father Never Taught Me Cyril Wong
FICTION – LEAD – 36
A woman learns of a friend’s illness and wonders if she ever truly knew him. A boy who sees ghosts heeds the advice of a fortune-teller, with surprising consequences. A girl wakes up and realises everybody in her Bedok neighbourhood has vanished. This collection brings together, for the first time, both new and previously published stories by Cyril Wong, award-winning author of The Last Lesson of Mrs de Souza. Ranging from the commonplace to the surreal, these short narratives feature characters in crisis, with two stories crossing intriguingly into creative autobiography.

A Certain Exposure Jolene Tan
The first biography of an opposition politician from postindependence Singapore—the iconic Chiam See Tong.
Let the People Have Him Chiam See Tong: The Early Years Loke Hoe Yeong
NON-FICTION – LEAD – 38
Chiam See Tong (b. 1935) is Singapore’s longest serving opposition politician. A member of parliament for nearly three decades, Chiam is also one of Singapore’s most iconic, influential and beloved political figures. Through his efforts in shaping Potong Pasir into a “model constituency”, the veteran statesman has greatly contributed towards an increasingly pluralistic Singapore. When he first entered politics in 1976, there was not a single opposition member in Parliament. As the founder of the Singapore Democratic Party, and later the Singapore People’s Party, Chiam has long rallied for the need of an opposition as the essential democratic check on a one-party system. He is respected for his level-headed and non-confrontational stance, and is the only opposition member to have received public apologies and out-of-court damages from cabinet ministers of Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party.

Based on extensive interviews, family documents and party archives, Let the People Have Him is the first biography of an opposition politician from post-independence Singapore —a biography of a man who, through his accomplishments and devotion, struggled to build a fairer, more balanced and diverse country. Tracing the first half of a life fully lived, this book sheds light on Chiam’s circuitous and colourful route to Parliament at the age of 49—from his revolutionary family background to his days as a champion school swimmer; from his political awakening in New Zealand to his stint as an inspiring school teacher in Malaysia; from training as a lawyer to his cross-continental romance with his wife Lina; from standing as an independent candidate in 1976 to winning the Potong Pasir seat in 1984 as the leader of the fledging Singapore Democratic Party. Let the People Have Him draws a humanistic picture of Chiam in his early days—as his country changed around him before he was to change it— while revealing the guiding values that have made this humble and unassuming man revered for generations to come.

Drawing together the spice-addled influences from the Middle East, reckless creativity, and a fetish for ‘fat boy food’ (read: Spam), the recipes are as larger-than-life as the chef himself. Learn how to make Arabian staples such as green chilli harissa, harira and labneh, but don’t be surprised when these end up in wildly untraditional pairings—think nacho ‘hummus’ with spicy sausage and tomato ezme, or basturma-cured tuna with pomelo, onions and roasted sesame. Featuring over 90 recipes with full-colour photos and written in a casual and approachable style, this cookbook makes the perfect gift for fans of Artichoke, Bjorn or uninhibitedly rockin’ food in general.
