New Beginnings
26.01.2015
Fashion’s newest faces: rising stars of 2015 Alexandra Keates gives you the roundup of the five freshest faces for 2015 2014 was the year that saw the Queen Delevignes rule the fashion world. While Poppy’s Chanel and Emilio Pucci wedding dresses melted the hearts of fashionistas across the globe, her sleek and oh so cool off-duty wear made us want to raid the shelves of Topshop and Matthew Williamson alike so we would look that cool walking down the street. Meanwhile, supermodel sister Cara turned heads whether she was stepping onto the catwalk, partying with celebrity pals or simply leaving through her front door. However, with every New Year comes new beginnings, especially in the fashion world. So, while Miss Palermo and the Delevignes have established their places in the fashion hall of fame with their beautiful looks, they are about to be joined by some fresh, new and elegant women who will give them a run for their Jimmy Choos.
Amal Clooney
Gigi Hadid
Amal Clooney – née Amal Alamuddin, the new Mrs. Clooney, who married in a sensational Oscar de la Renta gown last year, has shown that she may be a top human rights lawyer but she also wields the power to take our eyes off her wonderful husband and onto her wardrobe. Amal oozes elegance in every outfit. Her choice of well-tailored, sharp pieces alongside glamorous dresses, such as the Giambattista Valli Couture macramé embroidered dress she showcased outside the Hotel Cipriani, demonstrates why she is the perfect inspiration if you want to create a flawless fashion look for 2015.
This new Victoria’s Secret Angel started finding her fashion feet in 2014. Her personal style is cool, eclectic and totally her own. Gigi is the perfect fashion icon to follow if you want to mix up your wardrobe yet still remain effortlessly stylish.
Lily James This beautiful English rose may be better known as to you as Downton’s Lady Rose - however, Lily’s fashion credentials are well on the way to being as glitteringly wonderful as her acting. Miss James opts for a classic style with a youthful twist; she is a breath of fresh air and definitely one to take inspiration from in 2015.
Sophie Hunter She may have broken hearts across the world by taking Benedict Cumberbatch off the market but this actress and director has displayed an impeccable taste in her recent red carpet looks. From eclectic glamour at the Palm Springs Festival in January to an uber cool head to toe leather look at the British Independent Film Awards, the future Mrs. Cumberbatch turns heads wherever she goes.

While Blake Lively may have won more attention for her maternity style, Kiera drew all eyes when she wore a custom-made Chanel dress to the Golden Globes and stood out from the crowd as the utter epitome of elegance.

What to expect when you’re expecting... A haircut! Victoria Thompson on what to expect when you go for the chop 1. EXPECT: IT REALLY WILL FEEL LIKE NEW YEAR, NEW YOU. Cutting your hair short and changing your image is a great way to embrace or inspire change and, as it is January, a chop will help you to kick start 2015 with a bang! Short hair takes so much less time to wash and dry, which is a big bonus for all of the running/cycling/swimming/yoga that you ARE going to start, right?
2. DONT EXPECT: TO FEEL GIRLY. Forget about all that time you may have spent watching Youtube tutorials for new hairstyles to try out; you just won’t have enough hair to play around with anymore. Both a plus and a negative really, but once again it makes short hair a massive time saver - you’ll save tonnes of time when getting ready for a night out and find yourself being more experimental with make-up and outfits instead!
3. DON’T EXPECT: TO LOOK LIKE ROSAMUND PIKE. OR ANY OTHER CELEBRITY FOR THAT MATTER. Short hair on celebrities is another kettle of fish entirely. You may have that sleek, chic bob when you come out of the hairdressers but I promise you that won’t last (well for 99.9% of you that is - some people just have great hair). Your hair may in fact explode into a fluffy mess when you cut it short, but embrace the imperfect look!
4. EXPECT: HAIR ENVY. Right now you see people with amazing short hair, but guess what? Once you’ve gone for the cut, you’ll be staring enviously at luscious long locks. Don’t let this put you off! You’re always going to want what you can’t have but you’ll never know for sure unless you try it. If you do bite the bullet and book an appointment, you’re going to get a bit of premature hair envy, but don’t let this put you off - it’s totally normal...

Alvvays Thekla, 31 January
Jessie Ware Colston Hall, 29 January
Laura Marling Thekla, 7 February
In their eponymous LP, Toronto-based fivepiece Alvvays served up one of the brightest and promising debuts of 2014. Its nine songs juxtapose fuzzy indie guitar lines with some seriously lovely melodies and choruses of wistful beauty, a lot like listening to The Pastels or Teenage Fanclub through a pair of really naff headphones. In Molly Rankin they have a front-woman who looks like Parallel Lines-era Debbie Harry and sings with the elegiac ease of Diana Ross - which are both definitely good things. Their Thekla date is the last show that they will play in the UK before swanning off to Paris for the European leg of the tour, their longest jaunt across the Pond to date. It should be rather vvonderful.
Jessie Ware shot to acclaim with the release of her now-revered debut Devotion, a record packed full of honed song writing, and bass-heavy enough to see the singer rub shoulders with the likes of Disclosure. Last year’s follow up, Tough Love, was bigger, brasher and tailored to the mainstream as Ware set her eyes on Adele’s throne. Hell, she even let Ed Sheeran write a song. As such, she was exposed to a much larger clientele, and her slot in Colston Hall’s grand auditorium reflects this as a progression from her previous visits to Thekla. She is definitely still going to bring it though it’ll cost a reasonably pretty penny, but loans have just come in and exams are over and you deserve it.
Laura Marling is one of the finest song writers that this country has produced in the last decade, song writing in its purest form. Her four albums are crammed with finessed tales and crafted characters, with subject matter ranging from the darker side of heartbreak to the downright whimsical. They illuminate a chronological maturing as well, after all she was only 18 when Alas I Cannot Swim hit the shelves. Seven years on and her latest release Once I was an Eagle is an altogether heavier beast, and Marling strikingly older. Her live delivery remains on point, and a small handful of shows next month represents a rare opportunity to catch it in the flesh and to probably sample a couple of tracks from the upcoming LP, Short Movie.

Directed by Beckie Darlington, Grounded has been received as an essential tale for our times. Lucy Ellinson stars as the virtuoso F16 fighter pilot prematurely retired by pregnancy, who now by day sits in an air-conditioned trailer in Las Vegas flying drones over the Middle East, hunting terrorists. And being a mother at night. A play based on dichotomy, it juxtaposes harrowing subject matter with the completely mundane, and grandiose writing with the basic workaday.
It’s the start of February. The promise and hope ushered in by the new year have faltered faster than the spree of fad diets and ephemeral gym memberships, as 2015 looks increasingly like just another year chalked up on the slow crawl towards death. ‘Not so!’ says Boogie Nights, Studio 94’s new event set to take over Blue Mountain and dispelling winter’s cruel grasp for one night only. Medlar is also playing which is very cool.
Grounded Arnolfini, 28 January
Bump Roller Disco Boogie Nights Blue Mountain, 5 February Trinity, 6 February And if that doesn’t sound like enough unadulterated joy for you, get a load of this. On the very next day the Trinity Centre is to undergo a dramatic transformation into Bristol’s own roller disco, with blend of soul, funk and disco music. So don your skates and get on down in the best way possible to some of the finest funk around. Customers are reminded though that the roller skating is to be undertaken completely at their own risk.
