Men’s fashion is notoriously tricky, particularly on a student’s budget. Here are nine tips to improve a staple men’s wardrobe- your no-effort, no-cash guide to looking dapper in Spring / Summer 2015

LOOK ONE

LOOK ONE

In this outfit, a tan houndstooth-patterned overcoat is paired with faded black jeans, a black cashmere roll neck jumper and striped socks. The socks are deliberately contrasted with the houndstooth pattern of the overcoat. Tip 1: Pin-rolled jeans change the outline of trousers and draw attention to shoes or socks. The “pin roll” refers to the tight roll at the trouser cuff. It is made by pinching the inside seam of the trousers and folding it back on itself towards the ankle; this is then held in place and rolled up a couple of times to create a tight cuff on the trousers. Tip 2: An overcoat is one of the more versatile pieces of clothing, which can often be found for under £40 in charity shops. A lightweight one, such as in this outfit, is perfect for the shifting weather conditions of Bristol in the Spring. It is generally best to get a size larger than you would normally wear; the larger size makes it easier to layer up if it is chilly, whilst the more casual look softens your shoulders for a slightly more louche look.

LOOK THREE

This outfit features (at the model’s insistence) a charcoal matching tracksuit, worn under a cashmere trench coat and topped off with a stussy-print five panel. Tip 5: It can be difficult making clothes of all the same colour look fashionable, particularly with a shapeless tracksuit. However, this structured navy coat frames the tracksuit and co-ordinates with the shoes. The hat offers some embellishment and shows bit more personality, without clashing with any of the muted colours of the outfit. Wearing structured blazers and jackets with more casual bottoms looks effortless but still put together.

LOOK TWO

This outfit features navy blue linen trousers, a garish vintage silk shirt, purple socks and tan desert boots. Tip 3: If a shirt is too oversized and shapeless, a helpful trick is to use a ‘military tuck’ to remove some of the excess fabric. This can be used with casual shirts or with a suit and involves drawing the shirt tighter across the front and sides of the body; the excess fabric behind the central seam is folded back under the seam, this can then be tucked in either partially, or completely, for a quick fix on an ill fitting shirt. Tip 4: Statement socks are a really easy way to add a bit of colour. They can be used to break-up the lower half of an outfit, with turned up trousers revealing a more subtle hint of colour. Because the shirt above is very loud, statement socks can be used to complement other articles of clothing and tie an outfit together, without providing too many points of focus.

LOOK FOUR

LOOK FOUR

This outfit is comprised of a powder blue dropshoulder jumper, with white and blue pinstripe trousers and a pair of plain white trainers. Tip 7: Bold pinstripes featured heavily in London Fashion Week this year, particularly on the runways of Gucci, Haider Ackerman, J.W. Anderson and E. Tautz. A subtle pinstripe offers a bolder alternative to plain chinos in the spring and summer. Generally, lighter colours look best with lighter-coloured shoes. This can easily be put together to give a relaxed and effortless look, plus it has the benefits of being genuinely comfortable for long days in the library. Tip 8: Drop shoulder refers to the seam sitting lower on the shoulder, which alters the shape of the jumper. This works well with oversized t-shirts as well. Jumpers tend to look less structured as a result, giving a more relaxed look and sleeves can always be rolled up to make it wearable for more occasions.

LOOK FIVE

This outfit is made up of a cropped denim jacket over an oversized denim shirt and green t-shirt. Tip 5: Though, people tend to have strong feelings about double denim, if you have the confidence to try it then you really should. The golden rule is that the denim should never be the same colour. With double denim the emphasis is on the texture of the clothing and this is often best highlighted when two subtly different tones are worn next to each other. Tip 6: This above outfit is quite layered, with a jacket, shirt and t-shirt. The advantage of this is in its versatility, allowing different combinations of colours and several variations of the same outfit. When layering, it is easier to stick with solid colours, complimenting the different tones of each piece of clothing with each other. For example, the oversized green T-shirt above could easily be worn with a flannel shirt and a different jacket.

Fucked Up Marble Factory, 24.05

TOPS Start The Bus, 12.05

Tyler, The Creator O2 Academy, 15.05

You might presume that a band called Fucked Up would not exactly be first choice to take home to meet your parents- and, comprised of members with pseudonyms like Mustard Gas and Concentration Camp as they are, you might be right. But actually the band proffer quite a presentable face of hardcore. Yes, their lyrics might be bawled by a big fat man called Pink Eyes. Yes, this big fat man might occasionally get naked at gigs and asphyxiate himself with his microphone cord. And yes, their lyrics might have flirted with some Fascist ideology- yeah, maybe that last one wasn’t okay. But their sprawling musical stylings venture far beyond the four-four stomp of punk, and their four LPs have exhibited real and successful experimentation. Catch them at the Marble Factory later this month.

There has been some bloody good music coming out of Canada of late, a lot of it produced by an exciting raft of fledgling bands who are showing signs of a capacity of holding their own among more established countrymen like Arcade Fire, Grimes and Mac Demarco. Balancing out the dark underbelly of Ought and Viet Cong, who ply a compellingly deadened brand of post-punk, are altogether friendlier bands like Alvvays and TOPS, who between them produced two of last year’s brightest records. The latter, a four-piece from Montreal, channel a ‘60s nostalgia, pairing sun-lathered lazy guitar lines with Jane Penny’s breathless vocal which at times evokes Nico. It’ll sound just perfect in Start The Bus, where the band stop off from their spring/summer UK tour.

Observing the spilling of Odd Future into the mainstream at the turn of the decade was a lot like how I imagine classical listeners observed the emergence of punk rock in the mid ‘70s. From the outside it just looked like kids were dressing up funny again, swapping mohicans and chains for knee socks and tattoos of upside down crosses. Dressing up funny and jumping off things. Whatever it was, there was an excited giddiness to this ‘movement’, which seemed to swirl around daddyissued homophobe Tyler, The Creator. And while Tyler’s material this side of ‘Yonkers’ has always left slightly to be desired (recent LP Cherry Bomb is alright- just alright, particularly in the context of To Pimp a Butterfly), his live shows continue to harness the ruthless excitement of 2010.

Festivals Dot to Dot Various Venues, 22-23.05

Love Saves the Day Eastville Park, 23-24.05

VegFest Amphitheatre, 23-24.05

It’s that time of year again, bank holiday season when the powers that be try to cram Bristol as full of culcha as they possibly can. Don’t get me wrong, this is a very good thing- if you’ve finished your exams. Dot to Dot takes place across a number of the city’s music venues, and touts a lineup of choice new guitar bands like Fat White Family, Hinds, Menace Beach and The Wytches.

The biggie. Following Tokyo Dub’s lead last September, Love Saves the Day has graduated from Castle Park to the grander climes of Eastville Park for its fourth incarnation. An altogether dancier festival than Dot To Dot, it features DJs and live acts in equal measure. The Sunday is by far the stronger, showing off Skepta, David Rodigan, Ratking, Four Tet and Floating Points. And Azealia Banks. Obvs.

Offering something slightly different, VegFest proclaims itself ‘The UK’s Biggest VeganEvent’ (oo err). By day the Lloyds Amphitheatre will host information stalls, cooking classes and, of course, food and drink. By night it will be transformed to host DJ sets from the likes of Alfredo and LTJ Bukem, as the party really gets started. Hip enough for ya?
