CAMPAIGN REPORT

The Tribute Campaign IN HONOR OF F. ROBERTSON HERSHEY

The Tribute Campaign in Honor of F. Robertson Hershey provided the Episcopal High School community the opportunity to celebrate the School’s 11th Headmaster and his legacy in a tangible and meaningful way. Funds raised during the campaign support the School’s development priorities about which Rob was most passionate, including the new Student Center in Stewart Gym, the completely redesigned Washington Program, endowment for financial aid, and endowment for faculty. Last fall, the Hershey Athletics Center was named in honor of Rob and Kathleen.

DEAR EHS COMMUNITY,

I am pleased to share with you this report detailing the success of The Tribute Campaign in Honor of F. Robertson Hershey. While the total funds raised are very exciting, I personally am even more pleased by the number of individuals who have stepped up to celebrate Rob’s superb leadership of Episcopal High School. We publicly launched the Tribute Campaign in November 2015. Just seven months later, we closed, having exceeded our $10 million goal. Alumni spanning seven decades, parents current and past, and friends of Episcopal have committed an incredible $10,441,643 to name the School’s Athletics Center in honor of Rob and Kathleen Hershey and to advance vital EHS priorities.

This generosity conveys tremendous appreciation to Rob for continuing Episcopal’s legacy of strong leadership and declares great confidence in the School’s future. This was clearly not a token “thank you” as Rob and Kathleen completed their 18th and final year at Episcopal. This effort will help launch the School’s next great era with tremendous energy and drive. Like everything Episcopal, our success reflects the strength and devotion of our community. Rob Hershey has ensured that honor and strength of character have remained at the core of the EHS experience, and the impact of such qualities on our community cannot be overstated. Thanks to your generosity, the priorities about which Rob feels most strongly will be advanced, and the Hershey Athletics Center will ensure that his leadership will be remembered for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Lee Ainslie ’82 CHAIR, THE TRIBUTE CAMPAIGN VICE CHAIR, EHS BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The three priorities to which you designated the majority of your restricted gifts are: • Financial Aid, • Global Experiences, and • Faculty Endowment.

FINANCIAL AID A robust financial aid budget empowers the Admissions office to attract and develop the most talented, diverse, and engaged student body possible.

What I’ll miss most...being surrounded by colleagues so focused on the mission of the School and devoted to the well-being of students, understanding that ‘whatever it takes to help a student’ defines their work.” – ROB HERSHEY

FACULTY ENDOWMENT EHS continues to retain and attract an extraordinary faculty, by offering teachers competitive salaries, extraordinary benefits, and innovative programming and professional development opportunities.

These students contribute to our School and community in many ways, and we are grateful to have the ability to make their dream of attending – and our dream of welcoming them to EHS – a reality.” – SCOTT CONKLIN DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS

Our down time together is a big part of what sets Episcopal apart, since we are all here on campus 24/7. It’s like a big family, and the new student center will be where everyone can just enjoy being together.” – SOPHIA HOLT ’15

STUDENT CENTER The 1913 Stewart Gym is being transformed into a LEED certified Student Center. The space will support healthy interaction and fellowship outside of the classrooms, off the fields, and beyond the hours of play rehearsals in a place that belongs to everyone.

LEADERSHIP AND ETHICS The Leadership and Ethics program is a four-year school-wide curriculum during which students explore the many facets of leadership and develop an ethical foundation for making important decisions.

Feeling like I had agency and power, and being inspired to actually change and be a leader of change in the EHS community, was the foundation for me being able to think outside the box at U.Va.” – SHANTELL BINGHAM ’11 GROWING FOR CHANGE, CO-FOUNDER/DIRECTOR

One of the important things that makes Episcopal so great is that you have all these opportunities at your fingertips. You have the Washington Program to take you out to D.C. Here we have that opportunity to see what the future holds.” – JESSE MEYLER ’16

THE WASHINGTON PROGRAM The Washington Program is a critical component of the EHS experience, which provides students with a dedicated program staff, access to high-profile and culturally relevant speakers and events, and transportation to and from Washington, D.C. each week.

GLOBAL EXPERIENCES EHS students participate in service trips and cultural immersion programs around the world, helping to cultivate the leaders of tomorrow into a curious, respectful and compassionate student body of global thinkers.

He taught us that we were more than just Episcopal students. That we were part of a community that was bigger than just ourselves. Mr. Hershey really wanted kids to actually go out and experience the world.” – ELLE WILSON ’13

FAREWELL TO THE HERSHEYS

On April 22, members of the EHS community formally bid farewell to Rob and Kathleen Hershey. With the newly named Hershey Athletics Center playing host to the festivities, faculty, friends, and alumni came together to honor the School’s 11th Headmaster and recognize his 18 years of service. The evening’s program included remarks from John Townsend ’73, Byron Jones ’14, Annalee Walton ’14, Perry Epes ’65, Bailey Patrick ’79, and Lee Ainslie ’82, as well as a showing of “Rob Hershey’s Episcopal,” a moving video created by Luke David ’93, which chronicled Rob’s tenure at EHS. Other highlights of the celebration included the unveiling of a portrait of Rob and Kathleen, which is now positioned inside the main entrance of the Hershey Athletics Center, and a song from the Episcapellas and Jack of Hearts, who marked the evening’s end with a performance of “On Our Way Rejoicing.”

“One thing I can say with absolute clarity is that I’m so glad that I chose to come to Episcopal High School. I’ve often said, and I really believe it, that if you’ve chosen to do what I’ve chosen to do for your life and for your career, there’s no better place in the country to do it than at Episcopal High School.” _______
