About Palm Oil

Palm oil is squeezed from the fruits of the oil palm  Grows in a tropical climate.  An oil palm produces 40 kg of oil every year.  Each palm fruit contains 30-35% oil.  Harvested every month.

Palm oil has been part of the human diet for over 9000 years  The oil palm is an ancient tropical plant from the West African tropical rainforest region.  In the late 1800s, archaeologists discovered a substance that they concluded was palm oil in a tomb at Abydos dating back to 3000BCE.  Palm oil is traditionally used as a cooking ingredient in the tropical belt of West Africa South East Asia and Brazil.

Palm oil successfully helped replace industrially produced trans fats  Palm oil has emerged as a versatile, cost-effective solution for replacing trans fats in products that require a solid fat for functionality.  Today the average intake of trans fats in many European countries is below recommended thresholds and no longer a public health concern. 7

Palm oil alternatives are not necessarily healthier  Palm oil has an average saturated fat content of around 50%.  The proportion of saturated fats in palm oil is lower than the saturated fat content of other fats of similar application.

In summary (1)  Palm fruit oil is the most widely-used vegetable oil in the world. It has the highest yield compared to other oil crops per hectare of land.  If produced and sourced sustainably, palm oil can play an important role in filling the growing global demand for vegetable oil.  Palm oil is used in many products, because of its functional benefits.  Palm oil has been part of the human diet for over 9000 years and more recently has been a successful replacement of industrially produced trans fats.
