district, noun dis•trict \`dis-(,)trikt\ : an area or section that has some special characteristic or purpose : a region or locality marked by a distinguishing feature The District Magazine’s mission is to celebrate the people, communities, and businesses. We want to learn your stories so we can tell the stories. In this issue, we celebrate a few of Tampa’s Movers and Shakers. We know we only scratched the surface. Movers and Shakers to us are: people making moves, they keep things moving, shake up the status quo and always look to pass it forward. The District is a direct reflection of change and our environment, which is why we partnered with Print TV Media and their new app VidPic AR throughout the issue. What is print; can come to life!

Augmented Reality… Heard of it?

You may be familiar with augmented reality (AR) thanks to the recent Pokémon epidemic. And if your one of the 100+ million people who enjoys throwing Poké Balls at imaginary critters around your home, you're going to love what we've cooked up in this issue of The District. You'll find that the experience is a little more...rewarding.

Step 2: Find - Find images in this magazine that have a "Play" button (start with the cover). Step 3: Scan - Using VidPic AR like a lens, view the full image, then Tap "Play". With VidPic AR, we're bringing you closer than ever before to the story behind the image. The Inspiration behind the art and The beer behind the bar. Nicole Chamier Owner and Founder, Caked Makeup caked.co

Nicole grew up in Sarasota, FL after moving from Long Island, NY at a young age. She always had a knack for technology and fixing computers, which led her to a career in Information Technology. As time passed, she realized that her true passion was in the cosmetics/beauty industry and started thinking of ways she could try to incorporate it into her profession. When she realized computers and makeup didn't really mix, she decided to find another way. What started as an innocent makeover at the Lancome counter for the 8th grade dance; Nicole began to mimic makeup artist's work and became infatuated with buying, wearing and reading about makeup from that point on. Her ultimate dream was to have her own brand that would be shared with girls who had the same passion for cosmetics. When her longtime friend (turned business partner) challenged her to move forward with the business one night in DC, her dreams soon became reality. She started researching the industry, working with labs and found the perfect graphic designer who brought her brand image to life... and the rest is history. She now runs Caked Makeup full time and is still pinching herself (probably while you're reading this) that this is real life. 10 10

Who is Nicole in three words? Driven, creative, productive procrastinator (get it?) What excites you most about life? Being able to do what I love with having the support and love from my family, boyfriend and friends to back it up. Tell us one thing most people do not know about you? I played the piano for 6 years and refused to do almost every public recital we had. I really hate having to perform in front of people like that. What inspires you to do what you do? I’ve been in love with everything related to the beauty industry from a really young age. I started my company because I love not only makeup, but also everything that comes along with it: the branding, styling/trends, graphic design, marketing, etc. Getting feedback and interacting with our customers on social media is also rewarding. It’s so fun to see people posting pictures wearing our lip products or talking about the brand. I’m always striving to improve and perfect our products and constantly looking at what’s next-- I am so blessed that

I am able to do this and I can’t believe it’s real life! It’s so insane to hear girls tell me that our Lip Fondants are their favorite liquid lipsticks they own. It’s the coolest feeling in the world. If you were granted one wish, what would it be? Honestly, I want to be able to eat whatever I want at all times and have it count as nutritious calories. (I’m looking at you pizza and chocolate cake). What is your most memorable awkward moment? When I used to work for a professional sports team in Tampa, part of my job was to run one of their social media pages (before it really started to become the norm for businesses). One night, I was out with my friends having some drinks and sushi at The Rack (RIP). At one point during the evening, my friend took my phone and was uploading our pictures online, which I didn’t think anything of. However, what I didn’t realize was that I was still logged into the team’s account. All of our pictures were front and center on their Facebook page the entire night. That was a pretty awkward conversation with my director.

Mathieu Stanoch President, Historic Holiday Spirit; Director, Ybor Merchants Association

Mathieu was born September of 1981 in Wisconsin. He grew up in an environment heavily into arts and culture. Mathieu’s earliest memory of expressing his creative side was every Christmas. His grandmother Lois always got each grandkid a huge box of art supplies and instead of playing with the toys, they would draw and make forts out of the boxes. Mathieu had a bumpy childhood, as most products of divorce parents often have. Although, it taught him the social, mental and adaptation skills he heavily relies on today! When he made it to Tampa in 1998 he immediately fell in love with the charm of Ybor City! Mathieu started his journey as many do in the event scene with odd jobs and a bohemian lifestyle to put it lightly. It wasn’t till he met Stephan, Steve and Ernie from Florida Entertainment Group did his spark to take events in Ybor to the next level. Today, Mathieu is responsible for the Historic Holiday Spirit which produces holiday programming in Ybor, to include the Snow on 7th Holiday parade and the March of the Pumpkin King Halloween Parade!! “I truly am a product of how great the community in Ybor is and how much more is to come.”

Who is Mathieu Stanoch in three words? Trustworthy, authentic and Charismatic What excites you most about life? The humanity that comes from tragedy and then becomes the foundation on how we grow. Tell us one thing most people do not know about you? I love getting lost. I find it the only way to really find myself.

What inspires you to do what you do? The community inspires me and without that support I don’t think it would give me the passion to make Tampa a better place. What do you love most about Tampa? I love the diversity of its Citizens What is your most memorable awkward moment? I farted in 8th grade science class

and immediately screamed who farted thinking they heard it and no one did… lol Knowing yourself: If you could go back in time and provide your younger self advice; what would that advice be? Kindness is the language the blind can see and the Deaf can hearMark Twain

Lindsey Meyer

Board Certified Behavior Analyst; Founder and Owner, Meyer Inspired Photography; The District Magazine’s Photographer meyerinspired.com

Lindsey grew up on a farm in Kansas. Her dad didn’t have boys, so yes she worked on the farm building fence, driving tractors, hauling hay, chasing cows, and much more. The farm is a big reason for who she is today. Photography has always been a love of Lindsey’s. Every Christmas she asked Santa for a new camera. During high school she became the yearbook photographer and editor. In college, she was the friend who always had the camera, even when cameras where on phones. After college Lindsey began taking photos for friends and before she knew it, she was getting paid to do what she loved. “I met Ed Suyak at a charity event I volunteered to take pictures at and now I have the gig of my photog dreams!” said Meyer. Her Story is much bigger than photography. When she is not 20 20

hanging upside down to grab the perfect shot, she is working with special needs kids during the week. Lindsey was an elementary teacher for five years and decided to go back to school to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. She currently is working with special needs kids at a therapy clinic in Lutz four days a week and a photographer every other day and night.

What excites you most about life? The unknown

If you were only allowed to have three possessions, what would they be? My camera, my dog (Riley), and my former car (Dodge Charger R/T).

Tell us your most memorable awkward moment? When I was 21 my friends and I attended the BET Spring Bling. I got on stage with LL Cool J. He kissed me on the forehead and I am ashamed to say I did the typical white girl jump up and scream dance.

If you were granted one wish, what would it be? Happiness and optimism for everyone!

What inspires you to do what you do? As a Behavior Analyst – helping my kids discover they can accomplish more than they even know. As a photographer – capturing a moment that can bring someone happiness for a lifetime.

Now that Summer is over have you found yourself lost in the winter blues and lacking motivation? Have no fear, post summer sexy is here! Regardless if you belong to a gym or not, you can quickly implement these simple exercises remotely anywhere. Simply download a fitness timer to your phone and utilize that as your personal coach. I highly recommend a high-intensity interval training (HITT) routine to burn the maximum amount of calories and shred that body. HITT is an ideal way to blast the fat for the person that is always on the go. Make sure to have a bottle of water, towel, yoga mat and most importantly; your banging beats to keep you moving! Create a playlist that will get you moving better than Channing Tatum on Step Up! Once you've downloaded your fitness timer (Personally, I use boxing itimer) Go to options, you'll select how many rounds you want to go, the length of time per exercise and your break time. The most rounds you can initially set it for is 15 rounds. I recommend setting the round and break length at 30 seconds. If you complete that routine, you will only need 15 minutes to set aside to get your workout on. Perform the five exercises listed below three times to complete your 15 minute high intensity interval training routine.

Chris Findeisen

Co-Owner and Founder of The Blind Tiger Coffee, Tea, and Textile Shop and Black & Denim Apparel Company Chris is a Graphic Designer by heart and a real Entrepreneur. He is originally from Rhode Island but found his way to Tampa in 2002 to attend The University of Tampa. In 2006 Chris graduated Cum Laude from UT with a BA in Graphic Design. He is the person that makes it happen. Chris landed his first clothing design job by driving to the business 30 minutes before they opened and pleaded his case to the first manager that arrived; he got the job.

I am inspired to arrive at a level of success where I can use my resources and platform to help others who started(ing) out as I did. If I was granted one wish it would be, on a humanity side, have a cure for cancer, and on a personal side, to sit at a dinner table with people who have inspired me throughout life, past and present, and have amazing conversation and dialogue. Tampa’s iconic history blended with the dichotomy of its youth and potential is by far what drives my love for Tampa. My favorite place in Tampa to be just me would definitely be anywhere with my friends on a “Sunday Funday”. My favorite non-work related hobby would be either writing and performing spoken word poetry or going on large Tweed Bike Rides throughout the city.

I would best describe myself as Ambitious, Passionate, and Relentless.

My most memorable awkward moment (or moments) is any time I send the wrong text to the wrong person.

I am most excited about starting to see the successful results of my entrepreneurial journey and how it affects people in a positive way.

Knowing me, if I could go back in time and provide my younger self advice, it would definitely be something one of my closest friends told me; “Always Be a King”, which roughly means to always own yourself and your actions in life’s toughest moments and know that there will be more to overcome. It’s how you choose to react and act during those times that will define you.

One thing most people do not know about me is that I am a Pluviophile (n) a lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days.

Creative The Key to Unlocking Blocks

The Wright Brothers knew they were going to crash, yet tried to fly anyway. Unlike their competitors, the former bicycle mechanics brought extra parts to the sand dunes to make onsite repairs and reduce cycle time. Their creative courage resulted in not just a new product (the aircraft), but also a process for failing quickly, learning fast and outpacing their competition. 26 26

There are a myriad of inspiring tales of similar legendary so-called fails. The multibillion-dollar success of Post-it(R) Notes is directly attributed to two employees at 3M, Spencer Silver and Art Fry, who mistakenly formulated an adhesive that didn't stick well, but which just happened to unstick as needed. The duo persisted, despite management recommendations to abandon the project, and because of their resilience, their failed glue formula was transformed into the ubiquitous office product we can't live without. Einstein advocated for this type of combinatorial creativity and Steve Jobs famously quipped that creativity is just "connecting things." In fact, it's creativity that most often drives success. Virtually all companies - from startups to Fortune 500s - need it. Corporate stagnation is real. Innovation is happening at breakneck speed, and even historically successful corporate stalwarts are finding themselves staring in the face of irrelevance. No matter how knowledgeable a team may be of their market, product portfolio and competitive landscape, they face a perilous proposition: grow or fold. And nothing prompts growth more than creativity and innovation.

To boost your own creative thinking powers - whether at work or for your own personal needs - try these tips from Dalí Museum Innovation Labs' executive facilitator, Nathan Schwagler: High-performing creative people learn to bend the status quo and they do it by optimizing their conversations. These successful creative thinkers temporarily suspend judgment during idea generation. In the context of innovation, one of the most prohibitive things to do is to attempt to both generate and evaluate new ideas at the same time. Instead, try splitting a brainstorming session into a few parts: First, immerse yourself in the data and information surrounding the challengeThen, generate a clear statement that summarizes the opportunity or problemTry a divergent exercise - something to clear your mindNow you're ready to focus your energy on developing solutions. Once you have a solid list of solutions to consider, force yourself to stretch further. Feel tapped out? Go even further! A good goal is to get to that challenging third round of ideas, which research suggests will be the most innovative. When you've truly exhausted your ideation, take a break and come back to the challenge with evaluation criteria in hand - define what success looks like and then deliberately apply that criteria against your list of ideas.

Salvador Dalí famously quipped, "Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it." The Museum has adopted the artist's approach in its Innovation Labs program. "When it comes to solving the complex problems of our inter-connected global economy, Dalí's fear-free, trial-and-learn approach is the type of creative thinking that we optimize for at The Dalí Museum Innovation Labs," said Schwagler. From Dalí's fearless artistic prowess to the creative and courageous examples set forth by the Wright Brothers and the Post-It Notes inventors, there are numerous shining examples of great things that can emerge from creative thinking and a never-say-never spirit. Even the most impactful products and solutions can be sparked by an open mind and fresh perspective. The Dalí Museum, in St. Petersburg, Florida, is a worldrenowned Museum featuring an unparalleled collection of art works from celebrated artist Salvador Dalí. The Museum's Innovation Labs offers one-of-a-kind programs that carefully combine more than 60 years of psychology and management research on creativity, creative problem solving, and innovation, infused with Dalí's philosophy and methods to unlock a team's true untapped creative potential.

However, growing up he traveled around due to his father being in the U.S. Air Force. Jason has not always been an artist. scared to take the risk, especially when he had a career as a paramedic. One of Jason’s best decisions though, was giving his art to his friends to hang in their homes. All of his friends were encouraging him to take his art to the public. It only took one friend to post an image of his art on social media and it was game changing. Jason’s art career blew up instantly. Today, you will find his work hanging in cities like Los Angeles, NYC and Miami. Influenced by pop culture and current events, Jason’s Art has earned him some notable clients like: Kevin Hart, Akon, Rashad

Dominique Martinez

Artist, Founder and Owner, Rustic Steel www.rusticsteel.com

When the keys to a friend's workshop were first placed into Dominique’s hands; artistic opportunity is exactly what he saw. The art of manipulating steel as if it were clay provided Dominique with a liberating inspiration. Eventually, Dominique would find himself dragging salvaged sheets of steel down the block to his friend's shop every morning at 2:00 AM. Finally, in 2002, he left his job at a marketing firm to pursue his passion in steel art. That August, in a little shop in the Channel District, Rustic Steel Creations came to life. Rustic Steel Creations combines a love for art with a passion for accomplishing the impossible. Beginning his career with custom mirrors and frames, Dominique Martinez and his team, through persistence of and love for their art, have created an easily recognized aesthetic that can be seen throughout all of Florida, primarily in Tampa Bay. 32 32

With a focus on custom commissions and recycled materials, the team at Rustic Steel Creations has made it their goal to provide a noteworthy and timeless work of art for each of their clients. From staircases to sculptures, railings to signs, there is no job too big or too small for the artistic visionaries at Rustic Steel Creations. Trusted by and featured throughout businesses such as The Oxford Exchange, Ulele Restaurant, Waldorf Astoria in Orlando, and The W in Ft Lauderdale, Dominique and his team have made a name for themselves that can be recognized by their exquisite art. We asked Dominque if he was only allowed three possessions, what they would be. Dominique replied, “Junk, a welder and a sketch pad.”

With almost two decades of owning and operating a successful art company, along with exhibitions under her belt, Meaghan Farrell Scalise is a seasoned professional artist. A graduate of Florida School of the Arts, she started producing paintings and sculpted works of art as a freshman, along with studying graphic design and photography. As she progressed further, she became more open to many other creative paths and careers, such as portraiture, prop design and interior design. She has created several murals and commissioned art pieces for various businesses and private collectors. Her most recent artwork is a loose document of life experiences and the effect they have had personally. The recurring motifs are the use of patterns and symbolize life, mainly through portraits of animals and people. Meaghan has been awarded public murals and painted sculpture pieces around the City of

John Weatherby Founder and Owner, Weatherby Photography weatherbyphotography.com

John is a Tampa born and raised photographer who, it could be said, discovered his love for photography while working as a waiter in college. After landing a side role managing the restaurant’s social media pages, John bought his first DSLR and began taking pictures of the beautiful food, as he pursued his undergraduate degree from the University of Tampa. Venturing away from the restaurant, John began taking photos throughout the Bay Area, developing his eye to find unique perspectives, often playing off of reflections, light, and color. When friends and professors began taking notice to his work, and inquiring about purchasing and hiring him to take photos, it was all the confirmation needed to propel John to turn his “passion” into a career. John earned his degree in Advertising at the University of Tampa, and formed his company Weatherby Photography within weeks of graduation. Today John 34 34

has a studio located at Red Door No.5, one of Tampa’s premiere art galleries and venues. Capturing moments may be John’s career, but if you ask him, he’ll tell you it doesn’t feel like work at all. John is most known for his vivid Tampa pictures, showcasing an “outside of the box” perspective of the city. Aside from his fine art work, John’s specialties also include commercial, and architectural photography “I think the ultimate satisfaction is discovering something you’re passionate about and finding a way to make a living out of doing it. I feel very fortunate to have received recognition for my Tampa photos. Being born and raised in the Bay Area, it is the highest honor to help represent this beautiful city I call home.”

Knowing yourself: If you could go back in time and provide your younger self advice; what would that advice be? Exactly that, Learn to take advice… I still struggle with this one as I am often sure I have a better read on things I am talking about. Brian Schaefer

Owner and Founder of Skatepark of Tampa (SPoT), The Bricks Ybor and the 501c3 founder of Boards For Bros

Brian Schaefer is locally known as the skateboarding thumbs up restaurant and skatepark owner you’ll often find in Ybor. He is most recognized for taking one of the most righteous slams in skateboarding history. That can happen when you build a loop and decide you’re going to try it at any price. While that one moment is by far the most dramatic of Schaefer’s exploits, it offers a fitting analogy for how he approaches everything he does; going for it, all in, slam or land. In 1993, at the age of 21 he opened a skatepark so he and his friends would have a place to put up a vert ramp. With skateboarding barely clinging to life at the time, this would not appear to have been a wise business move. But over the years, through relentless hard work, he built the park into a touchstone within skateboarding. SPoT today is famous for hosting Tampa Am and Pro; the most respected contests of all time, and producing many of what could be considered skateboarding’s all-time greatest moments (and worst when you factor in that loop attempt). There’s more to come, because Schaefer doesn’t stop, and he won’t unless he’s lying on the ground unconscious. If you’re ever meeting someone in Ybor, there is a good chance they will say, “Meet me at The Bricks.”

Who is Brian Schaefer in three words? Sarcastic, funny and hard-read. Tell us one thing most people do not know about you? I care too much! What inspires you to do what you do? The amazing people that I’m surrounded by on a daily basis. I really enjoy being self-employed and creating rad stuff for everyone to enjoy. Knowing I can continue to hopefully leave behind a rad impression to the community and the skateboarding world. Where or what is your favorite place in Tampa to just be you? Ybor City… I mean I love Ybor; it’s my home and we kind of have our own little area. What does the “thumbs up gesture” mean to you? Ha Ha! It’s one of those stupid things I’ve done that just caught on. Really, it goes back to when we were creating The Bricks. Everyone wanted updates on the progress and of course if we would have known what we were doing, it would have taken a lot less time. So whenever we completed a particular project, I would send everybody a thumbs up. Then it just became if I posted anything on social media, people would ask where the thumbs up was. Today, people see me and still give me the thumbs up. It means all good. THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE

Fit

The benefits of unconventional training by Coach John Forbes

Is your fitness boring? Let me rephrase that: Is your workout regimen or training program so routine that it's become robotic. Is it mundane to the point that you may not really believe in it? Ah, these are the questions. Well, there are other ways to get what you want out of your fitness and they don't have to be boring, super regimented or conventional.

See This Image Come To Life! 38 38

Download app Hover over full image > Tap

If you're doing some kind of exercise or training you roughly fit into two categories: One is you're getting started (even if it's again). And two is you're continuing (even if it's going on years). Both categories benefit from training outside the normal fitness box painted by your TV commercials, big gym rep counting trainer or standard health magazines. You aren't limited by these things' imagination and I'd like to skip all the niceties of writing so can we get down to why you're reading this article in the first place. F*** it, let's do it now.

here are some examples of what I mean: • When performing pushups, press hard enough to pull your hands just off the ground to make them explosive push-ups.

Isometric holds - Getting Started:

The quickest way to build strength is to perform iso holds. Why? Short reason for you ADD readers - Time under tension. The more your muscles work in a given amount of time the more they break down and the more they can be built up. That's why planks work so well (do you know what those are)? Here are some exercises to try that will literally fire your workout up by igniting your muscles: • hold a barbell (light weight) halfway to your chest after doing a bench press set for 15 seconds. • hold yourself above a pull-up bar as long as possible before starting pull-ups or another back/rowing exercise • perform pause reps for 2 seconds when doing squats or hold a wall sit for 60 seconds after each of your leg exercise sets.

Explosive Sets Continuing Journey:

Don't be frightened by the word explosive. It simply means adding a little extra something to your movement that you are performing. They can add a cardio element to your training (because I know how much you love cardio ha ha, ha...) and really help you to burn fat tens of hours after stopping your session. I'm not asking you to be LeBron James or any other athlete flying through the air (though in your own way you could be), and so

• Do broad jumps in a succession. Jump as far as you can from a standstill and then as quickly as you can jump again for a 7 jumps before resting. • Throw a heaving object around like a Medicine ball into the wall or a KB into the sand. And when I saw throw I actually mean try and put a whole through the wall (but make sure it's a concrete wall or something similar, and safety first). • Sprint somewhere instead of jogging. Run what you perceive as 70%80% of your maximum speed for 10-15 seconds for three to four sets.

1 and 1/2 reps - Getting Started & Continuing:

Instead of doing normal boring counting, what not had half a rep in there? Say this with me: "All the way down, halfway up, all the down, all the way up." You can also start with "all the way up" first for other exercises. Next imitate these words with your hand to get the movement down. Doing this motion will increase time under tension, give you a short isometric hold, and recruit extra muscle fibers in the body you normally don't use because this move isn't familiar to your body's mechanics. Great stuff right? Now put it into action! Here are some exercises to incorporate your new counting. • Hip Thrusts for the glutes • Squats and Leg Press for all your legs • Push-ups, Curls, Rows, for the upper body • Sit-ups for your abdominals These are just a few small changes you can make to your fitness routine that can add up to big results later when used properly. And if you don't know what these exercises look like, you can always download the Forbes Effect app (for iPhone iOS) at forbeseffect.com and get a daily workout complete with a video for every exercise listed in the workouts. Oh yeah, it's also free so there goes your excuse to let go of your hard earned cash. I know so benevolent, you don't have to say it, but it's because I like you my reader (I think). Now that you know the benefits of ditching your conventional training moves from time to time, perhaps your result will be anything but conventional. See you next issue. Larry Plank

Director, K-12 S.T.E.M. Education Hillsborough County Public Schools Who is Larry Plank in three words? Innovative, creative, and entertaining! What excites you most about life? Life is an interesting journey, and I absolutely love to discover new things and learn about the world. Scientists see patterns in all they do, and I look for patterns in life. Patterns are all around us—whether it is in the way our weather cycles or in the decisions we make—understanding them is key to being able to make the best decisions possible. I’m also a very emotional person, therefore relationships are extremely important. Whether it be work, play or family, the people that you share your life with directly impact the quality of the experience. What inspires you to do what you do? In getting the Tampa Bay STEM Network off of the ground, we not only inspire youth to accomplish great things, but also have the opportunity to build a better Tampa Bay by creating a STEM-based talent pool to grow our local economy. I love the emotional connection to the kids, but also the high-level decisions that impact the long-term success of Tampa Bay. Mr. Vinik, Moffitt Cancer Center, MOSI, The Glazer Children’s Museum and The Florida Aquarium have found our initiatives important enough to invest in and support. We may be one of the most important start-ups in Tampa Bay! If you were only allowed to have three possessions; what would they be? That would depend upon when I get the others back… but I would say my iPhone, a pair of board shorts and my favorite…um…chilled drink from District Tavern. What do you love most about Tampa? Tampa is an amazing city with wonderful leadership. I moved here in 2000 to finish up an advanced degree with no intention of staying put, however I fell in love with Tampa Bay and have never left. The city has all of the great amenities that anyone could ask for—a vibrant arts scene, national sports franchises, great restaurants and beautiful parks—all without the big city problems of New York, Chicago or LA. What is your favorite non-work related hobby? I’ve been known to win a few corn hole tournaments… What is your most memorable awkward moment? I’m not a very good singer, so that one time when I sang an obscure George Michael song to a packed karaoke bar in my hometown in Michigan and the silence after 4 minutes of obvious pain in the audience left me, well, totally embarrassed.

quickly landed a cocktail waitressing position at a local college nightclub and in no time became the head bartender. Allison decided to move to Tampa to finish her bachelor degree at USF and be closer to family. Upon graduating, she took a position in Human Resource Management for a company located in Charlotte NC. Feeling dissatisfied and disenfranchised with her new stuffy corporate position, the light bulb of her true passion went off! Hospitality and Entrepreneurship became her focus. Allison packed up and headed back to Tampa on a mission. Knowing her journey would not be easy and would require capital, she went to work quickly at a neighborhood bar with only one fail safe rule; no customer left without a smile on their face. Her pride and dedication to make sure her patrons always left with a smile, ultimately introduced her to her current partner. One of Allison’s regulars took notice of her winning and highly driven spirit and suggested they should go into business together and open their own place. After two years of conceptualizing and perfecting every last detail, District Tavern was born and opened their doors in December of 2016. Stop by District Tavern and see for yourself.

Derek: It is home. I was born and raised in Tampa and currently live only 5 minutes south of the house I grew up in. My family is here, my church is here, and my business is here. What is your most memorable awkward moment? Josh: I've always kind of been a class comedian/ clown so one time in 7th or 8th grade I got thrown out of class after taking one step inside the door. The teacher said she wasn't in the mood for my shenanigans that day. Derek: The moment that is ingrained in my memory, that I just can’t shake, is when I last shaved my face. I looked like an overgrown 12 year old that was missing his chin. Knowing yourself: If you could go back in time and provide your younger self advice; what would that advice be? Josh: Take more chances. Fear is stupid and handcuffs you. Derek: To pay attention and try harder in school. All my attention went to making people laugh and playing basketball, which I became really good at, but those skills didn't help me in college. THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE

Who is Shawn Scalise in three words? Creative, Driven, Genuine What excites you most about life? I really enjoy problem solving, especially when I did not create the problem in the first place. Tell us one thing most people do not know about you?
In my early college years I wrote a poem in my creative writing class that was accepted and published in a national Poetry book. What inspires you to do what you do? Many people have been infatuated with printing since the 1400’s. I personally love the fact it incorporates both my obsession with technology along with my appreciation of art. If you were granted one wish, what would it be? I would wish for a society that is not so obsessed with money and greed, although at the same time a large lump of cash to relocate to an island somewhere would be fantastic! What is your most memorable awkward moment? I remember being a new hire at Adventure Island and was given a name tag of Scott because Shawn was not available at the time. I was working one day and laughed at one of my superiors and said to him, well at least I didn't get a girls name on my temporary tag. It turned out Kelly was his real name. Knowing yourself: If you could go back in time and provide your younger self advice; what would that advice be? I would want to clarify to my younger self with a chip on his shoulder that luck is not something people are just randomly given. That luck is nothing more than the crossroads of being prepared and given the opportunity to prove it.

Ways to Be More Effective During the Work Day

We're sitting too much and it's dangerous. The average American spends more than seven hours sitting every day, and the more time you sit, the higher your risk of serious, potentially lifethreatening health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. So, what can you do about it?

Fortunately, there are simple changes you can make during the day; anywhere, even at the work place, to improve your wellness and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. As part of the American Diabetes Association's(R) Wellness Lives Here(SM) initiative, the Association encourages everyone to get active before next year’s National Get Fit Don't Sit Day with these 10 tips for the workplace and beyond.

Ask questions and discuss issues face-to-face

Park a few blocks away from the office each morning and walk to work

Many of us today are working through our lunch break. When possible, take advantage of this time to walk outside and soak in the nice weather. Fresh air and vitamin D are often all you need to stay focused and push through the afternoon slump.

This allows you to start off your mornings energized and ready to take on the workday. If you take public transportation, get off one stop earlier to squeeze in some light exercise before 8 a.m.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator Waiting for the elevator often takes just as long as walking up the stairs, so why not use this opportunity to get your heart rate up? Plus, you'll get the chance to work your leg muscles.

Get up and move around the office once every 90 minutes When you're nose-deep in work, it's easy to lose track of time. Set up reminders on your phone or email every 60-90 minutes to get up and do a quick lap around the office. You can use this time to fill up your water bottle, go to the bathroom or catch up with coworkers. 44 44

Rather than sending an email every time you have a question, go to your coworker's office to discuss the issue face-to-face. This gives you a good excuse to get moving and a chance to more effectively hash out solutions in person.

Use your lunch break to move around outside

Stand up and stretch If you don't have time to walk around the office every 90 minutes, use the opportunity to stand up and stretch instead. Stretching is a great way to increase energy levels, reduce muscle tension and get your body moving.

Pace around the office during conference calls Conference calls are the perfect time to be active. Put clients and coworkers on speaker, or use your mobile phone during meetings to move around without any trouble.

Do chair exercises at your desk You've been wanting to tone your arms - why not achieve your goals at the office? When you need a break, do

a few reps of chair sits. You can even alternate between chair exercises and push-ups!

Hold standing or walking meetings Many coworkers will welcome the opportunity to stand and stretch their legs for a moment. If you have a twoperson meeting, consider going for a walk.

Fidget when you work Small movements and quick exercise breaks add up, especially in a sedentary work place, so challenge yourself to stand, stretch or even tap a foot to bring motion into otherwise still parts of your day. Just remember to keep it professional! Making a point to move throughout the day puts you on the right track toward wellness. Patrick: Dad, Shark and Funny Zezura: Mom, Loyal, Compassionate Tell us one thing most people do not know about you? Patrick: I'm probably one of the most competitive people you will ever meet! It's one of the qualities I try to instill in my children as well. Understanding that doing your best at each and every attempt is how you make sure you don't have any regrets. Zezura: I used to be really good at hula hooping and have even won contests because of it in my adult life. My hips don't lie. Shhhhhh! What inspires you to do what you do? Patrick: Making people happy. We do a lot of charity work with MDF. Not because we want publicity, but because we want the hard working people of Tampa Bay to know that we support them. We care about them and their causes and we want to do what we can to help our community continue to get better. Zezura: Our customers inspire me. From the ones who have become

regulars to the ones I haven't even met yet. Every time I am at the MDF I meet someone new and interesting and have even become friends with some wonderful people because of it. I love how they come in excited to see us and I don't want to disappoint, so we try to keep things new and interesting as much as possible around the shop and get a lot of inspiration from so many individuals we come across. If you were granted one wish, what would it be? Patrick: To promise my kids a great future. We live in a tough world these days. Zezura: For my children to grow up to be giving, loving, productive and happy adults in life, no matter what career path they choose, even if it isn't MDF centered. What do you love most about Tampa? Patrick: Tampa is eclectic. There are so many different people from different walks of life. Tampa is

literally a melting pot of cultures that blend so well together. It's why I am so blessed to bring my children up in a place that shows them everyone is different and that's a good thing. Zezura: I love how much there is to do and see in Tampa. It is virtually impossible to be bored. There is always something going on or someplace you can go depending on your interests. Knowing yourself: If you could go back in time and provide your younger self advice; what would that advice be? Patrick: Enjoy life and know that life is what happens while you're making plans. Be prepared for change but enjoy the ride. Zezura: I would tell younger Ze to take the time to get to know herself really well, do not be afraid of flying so she can travel a lot more and not be in such a rush to grow up.

This time, our Rants and Rave section is a definite Rave! We have another new edition to our ever growing Downtown arsenal. The Franklin Manor, a social drinkery serving up fresh handcrafted cocktails, a premium beer selection, and vibrant live music. Did we mention they have irresistible bar bites prepared by their Carriage House patio kitchen? They do, and they are tasty with the perfect portion size. Everything you need to make your night one to remember. However, on Saturday and Sundays they open at 11:00 am with live music featuring a brunch menu. Their interpretation of Chicken and Waffles is on point; the perfect Sunday-Funday spot. Owners, David Anderson and Lanfranco Pescante, left no detail unturned at 912 and 914 N. Franklin Street. They both know a thing or two about music as well. Their company,

the Nocturnal Group, has been responsible for bringing music talent like Avicii and Nelly to Tampa. If you have not stopped in yet or if you went to one of the other establishments that once held the same address; do yourself a favor, drop in and see what they have done for yourself. It is truly a place for everyone. The inside has a vintage, electric feel with a craft cocktail menu designed by Tampa mixologist Ro Patel. The large outside oasis offers live music, plenty of seating options and standing room to mingle. There is never a cover and requires no reservation. Pick a seat, any seat. They have high top benches, cafe tables, bleachers and of course - the bar itself. You are encouraged to mix n’ mingle, and reservations are only necessary for parties of 20 guests or more.
