Spencer Beaudreault Founder, Suspence Fitness www.suspencefitness.com
Born and raised in Willimantic, CT, Spencer Beaudreault picked up sports performance training at the age of 13. Excelling in football and track and field in high school, Beaudreault earned a Division 1 football scholarship to Sacred Heart University where he was able to play multiple positions (Quarterback, wide receiver, running back and return specialist). After college, Beaudreault earned a contract to play football for the FFFA in France. Suffering two ACL surgeries and a herniated disc, he then decided to direct his effort into personal and sports performance training. Spending years training with and under college athletes, professional athletes, college and professional coaches, he was able to gain all the necessary tools he needed to become a successful fitness coach.
How long have you lived in Tampa? I moved to Tampa in January of 2012, so a little over 5 years. Are you single? Currently, yes. What's your greatest personal accomplishment? That would have to be receiving a Division 1 football scholarship. It's a goal I had set as a freshman in high school, and I worked as hard as I could to make it happen. How did you become a personal trainer and why? I've always loved training. Throughout the years I've trained with professional athletes/coaches, collegiate athletes/coaches and I enjoyed it so much it became a passion. I genuinely love coaching and helping people. Who is your ideal client? My ideal client is someone who realizes that it doesn't come easy, and that it takes hard work and consistency. Someone who isn't afraid to be challenged with me by their side every step of the way. Honestly, I train people at all levels of fitness from athletes to beginners; as long as they are ready to work. What kind of training programs do you offer? I offer personal training (1 on 1), small group training (2-5 people), and online training for those who can't see me in person. What is your own motivation/inspiration for fitness? My own motivation comes from adversity I had to 12 12
overcome throughout my life, just like we all have to in some way, shape or form. I've torn my ACL twice, to have a severe herniated disc and sciatic nerve irritation. That's something I have to fight through every day while achieving my goals fitness wise. I use that as fuel to better myself every day. What advice would you give someone struggling to reach their goals? Don't be afraid to ask for help! There are people out there just like I who can help get you to where you want to be, as long as you are actively trying to help yourself. Stay consistent and never give up. What is the best way to stay healthy and fit over the summer? Just stay active. It's a lifestyle, and you don't break that lifestyle, ever. Summer means more opportunities to do things outside with more people. Name one of your guilty pleasures? Reeses Peanut Butter Cups hands down. The big cups, cold, left in the fridge, not the freezer. Are you a beach or a pool person? I'm a beach person. I like the vibe much better. Plus there's more room to throw the football around Besides water‌ what is your favorite summer drink? I'll usually kick back with a Corona; if that's the type of drink you're talking about. What are your top three summer bucket list items? 1. Traveling 2. Growing my business 3. Helping my current and new clients reach their summer body goals
Local Summer Bucket List Destination by Nathan Gardner
Conveniently located on the Tampa side of the Courtney Campbell Causeway, WhatSUP Paddle Sports offers a wide array of outdoor sporting equipment to anyone who wants to take advantage of nearly 10 miles of uninterrupted trails and waterlines. The first thing new customers will notice is the quality of equipment available to rent. Owner Tessa Blosser chose quality over quantity when choosing gear to rent out, which shows itself in everything from the ultra-sturdy paddle boards to the 21-gear hybrid bikes which make cruising 11 miles over the causeway to Safety Harbor a breeze — even for those who are less inclined towards fitness. Blosser grew up in Ft. Lauderdale with a family of outdoor enthusiasts and spent much of her childhood on the water. This passion stayed with her, even as she finished her master’s degree in education at the University of South Florida and began her 14 14
career as a teacher. While teaching full-time, Tessa always heard the water beckoning which eventually motivated her to start a paddle boarding company that she operated out of a truck in her spare time. “If you ever talk to anyone who’s started a business, they know that a ‘part-time’ business isn’t really part-time,” Blosser laughed. Despite the added pressures, Blosser fell in love with teaching people how to paddle board and getting to spend so much time on the water. She quickly realized she wanted to make it full-time
and, after 2 years with little time off, she took the risk, quit her job teaching, and pursued her business full-time. While she was mobile and renting from a trailer towed behind her truck, the City of Tampa started pursuing Tessa, and eventually succeeded in getting her business in its current location at a city owned building at the beach next to Whiskey Joe’s. The move has been all positives so far, and has allowed Tessa to have a shop where she sells apparel, boards and the stuff people usually forgot, like sunscreen and towels. She even has a concession where people can pick up some food or drinks. For rent, WhatSUP Paddle Sports offers paddle boards, kayaks, bikes or longboards, and also offers excursions, lessons and classes, including a popular paddle board yoga class on Wednesdays, which includes a free drink at Whiskey Joe’s. “The yoga class is a lot of fun,” Blosser said. “We all get together out on the water for a while, and then head over to have some drinks
and food. It’s a really diverse group, and we love just talking and getting to know each other.” On a beautiful, sunny day, I had the opportunity to paddle board with Tessa — my first time trying it. We spent about two hours hugging the line where the shallower “shelf” area near the shore turns into a deeper channel, which is the best place to view wildlife. Although we weren’t lucky enough to see the dolphins that frequent the area, there were tons of rays, fish and birds to view, including a beautiful rainbow-colored parrotfish weaving through some tall sea grass. Whatever you’re into, and whether you’re a beginner or expert, WhatSUP Paddle Sports has something for you. With the perfect location, and Blosser’s contagious enthusiasm, there’s no next place for your next outdoor excursion. THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE

VACATION? YES YOU CAN. by Kristin Leigh
The Not-So-Obvious Reason Why You Can’t Pull Yourself Away From Your Job.
There are three types of people I’d like to
I attribute one single cause that gets people to
speak to in this issue –the graduate entering
this point of stress: Fear.
the real world, the seasoned workaholic, and the budding entrepreneur. Let me first disclaim for credibility’s sake that I can empathize with all three of you. I worked ridiculous hours in public accounting during my 20s. I’ve been in the corporate world for ten years, next to complete workaholics. And I was raised by sleepless entrepreneurial parents.
While
most of us start out with best the intentions at hand, somewhere along the line our work style begins to change. We become stressed, possibly a bit depressed, and we find ourselves saying, “All I ever do is work. When can I get a vacation?”
16 16
You see, stress is not the product of your actual physical work. Rather, it’s a reflection of your confidence level in actually doing the work. If we think to the three types of people I reference above, fear sets in for different reasons. My goal for each of you is to identify the cause of your fear. This way you can figure out how to better manage your workload and take that vacation you deserve. So for the recent graduate: You scored your first professional job and are ready to take on the world.
Your immediate response to your new boss is always, “Yes! Of course!” You produce quality work, and then you’re given more. As this circle begins, you become more and more eager to please, and with that come more assignments. Your sole focus is now your boss. And eventually, you find yourself working at night, on weekends, or during holidays to climb that corporate ladder in record-breaking times. Because that’s what defines your success, right? My advice to you is this: Your managers know firsthand you’re incapable of doing everything, but as long as you keep giving, then shoot, they’ll keep taking. So do not be afraid to talk openly with them. If you want to take a vacation that is perfectly fine, that’s why companies give vacation days. Casually chat with your manager about some new spots you’d love to visit one weekend. Then, recap your work status and offer up a week in the near-future that you’d really like to take time off to visit these spots. The chiller and more matter-of-fact you are in your approach to this, the easier it will be received. Dearest workaholic: I’m willing to bet you’re extremely detail-oriented. Success in your mind is defined as crossing every T, dotting every I, and never messing up. This obviously requires you to work unusually long hours. You hold yourself to this high expectation and feel that it’s perfectly reasonable to hold others to the same expectation as well. You haven’t taken a vacation in years. In fact, your family probably doesn’t even expect much from you anymore.
your family and friends. My advice to you is this: Try incorporating your family into your venture. My dad worked countless hours building his business. Oddly enough I don’t really remember him ever being away. Instead, I remember stuffing marketing envelopes for him and being part of the excitement. Give this a try with your family and see how it works. My other tip is to pencil vacation into your calendar ahead of time. This way, you know how to prioritize your work. In the middle of scoring new clients? They’re human too. Giving them a heads up that you’ll be out of pocket on a certain block of days will only earn you respect (and might just seal your deal faster!). To sum it all up, communication with your manager, team, and clients is key. Reduce unnecessary work by talking to them to make sure you’re delivering what they want, not what you think they want. Plan
your vacations out ahead of time. This gives you the motivation you need to prioritize your work. And remember this, the real hero is already on vacation because he or she figured out a faster way to get things done. Like these topics and want to read more? Check out suitsandsneaks.com for the latest career, fashion, and lifestyle advice.
My advice to you is this: Stop what you’re doing for a moment and make a list of everything you’ve done this week. Literally, everything. For each item, answer this question with a Yes/No: “Did my boss directly ask for this?” For those you’re on the fence about, or answered No to, answer Yes/No to this question, “Do I think my team needs this even though they didn’t ask?” Grouping your Yes/Nos together now allows you to prioritize your work. Now when you do step away to vacation with your family, you know precisely who is and who isn’t missing out on your piles of work. Dear budding entrepreneur: I am so excited for you, I really am. You came up with this amazing idea and are ready to execute your dream. You will do anything it takes to make it work. I can imagine your excitement, and I can also imagine a slight guilt as more and more time pulls you away from THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE

When it comes to summer fun in Florida, no doubt grilling and evenings with friends come to mind but maintaining a clean diet during the summer can be a challenge. Well, that's where some opinions might differ.
In general, when it comes to consuming an adequate amount of protein, chicken and fish are considered the path of least resistance to maintaining muscle mass and keeping body fat percentages low, but this may not be the case at all. So what's the determining factor? You've probably heard the phrase, "you are what YOU eat" but I go one step further and say- "you are what you eat eats." Do terms like cage free, free range, pastured, grass-fed, grass-finished, etc. have any bearing on how you obtain and maintain optimal 20 20
health and physique? I would argue that, YES, they do.
If I had a dollar for every time that I've had a customer tell me "I don't eat beef, I'm trying to lose weight." Let's just say a significant portion of my job is the education! For instance, we know that farmed fish is generally higher in mercury and fat than wild-caught but have you thought about other meats this way too? You can imagine the variety of differences that are found in Beef and Chicken when you’re purchasing grassfinished or pastured vs. grainfed or your run of the mill “antibiotic-free” selections. When meats are raised in their natural environments (ahem, freeroaming and OUTSIDE) we find that fat content is substantially decreased naturally and find a
MUCH better-balanced nutrition with higher concentrations of vitamins and minerals as well (think spinach vs. corn in the human diet). The main culprit of beef's bad rap is high-fat content. This happens to be perfectly balanced in a grass-finished cowit’s easy to see that beef has a solid nutritional edge over even free-range poultry when also comparing fatty acids, proteins, fat-soluble anti-oxidants, and minerals that grass-finished beef has to offer. Amazing how Nature Knows Best, huh?? So, when you're thinking about grilling out with friends this summer or what you'll be prepping for the week's meals, don't leave beef out of the running- just make sure you're receiving from the best source possible.

7 Reasons You Should Be Blind Dating
Blind dates can be
1. Convenient with very little work
awkward and in some
Blind dating has a taboo factor, and when usually brought up in a conversation we hear about the bad stories. If you are like most people today, you are busy, and that is likely why dating gets put off, or you rely on online dating alone. Having a blind date set up for you can be an easy addition to your dating toolbox. Consistency is the key. Don’t only go on one; go on as many as your friends and family will set you up on. Practice makes perfect.
cases extremely painful or the best way to find your new partner. Do you currently only use dating sites and continue to find yourself with one nighters, try going on a blind date. Recruit your family and friends to set you up and enjoy the perks of blind dating. No swiping to the left or
2. Live a little Going on a blind date automatically broadens your horizons when you move out of your own way. One of the greatest effects about blind dates is meeting people you otherwise wouldn’t. Just making a new friend who isn’t in your core inner circle is a perfect way to expand your life and step out of your comfort zone.
right, just show up and get your date on. Think about it… your friends and family know you best so use them to your benefit.
22 22
3. Other people are often better matchmakers than we are for ourselves The people closest to us know us better than we know ourselves. Letting a loved one or a close friend set you up with someone they think would be perfect for you is an excellent way to meet people you normally would not. Your friends will have a good idea of whom you would be well-suited with . If
you are always dating individuals who are all wrong for you, it may be a good idea to let someone else set you up.
4. Enjoy yourself with no expectations. Going on any date (blind or otherwise) with an open mind is crucial if you’re trying to enjoy yourself. Even if the person you go on a blind date with isn’t the right person for you, you could end up making a new friend. Remember a new friend equals new associations with people you never knew before. Association and introductions trump all.
5. Encourages you to date more If you’ve are stuck in a rut then going on a blind date could just be the one thing you need to put you over the hump. A successful and enjoyable blind date can give you encouragement to go on more dates.
6. You could meet your match Your blind date could become the perfect match forever person. It takes dating to find the ONE. While you shouldn’t go on a blind date expecting to meet the one but having an open mind will eventually lead you to the right person. Remember, anything is possible when you take the chance and put yourself out there. You only miss the shot you don’t take.
7. No harm, no foul. If anything, there’s nothing to lose by going on a blind date. The worst thing is you may have wasted an hour at a coffee shop or happy hour. In the end, just going has a ton of benefits and very few (if any) drawbacks. Take the leap. Take a chance. Call your family & friends and ask them to set you up. Go forth with it and see what the blind date cards have in store for you.

Erica DiAngelo is a local lawyer and entrepreneur who grew up Sarasota. She attended college at FSU where she studied media communications & public relations and went on to law school in Miami at St. Thomas University. While living down south, DiAngelo noticed the Tampa Bay area, once famous for peaceful beaches and retirees had flourished with professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs. Though she may not have known it as a little girl selling snacks to golfers, or as a teenager creating clothes to sell at the local flea markets but DiAngelo has always had an entrepreneurial spirit herself. Seeing this movement inspired her to combine her legal expertise, business experiences, and background in media communication to help others. After circling the state, DiAngelo moved back to Tampa and opened DiAngelo Law in the Channel District. She is also launching a podcast & resource platform for professionals & entrepreneurs this summer. On weekends, you will find DiAngelo at one of Tampa’s delicious brunch spots, the gym, or strolling the Riverwalk.

Dare to Bare
Your Summer Skin! by Raquel Gibson and Dr. Deepak Naidu
It’s that time of year again, when Floridians spend most of their days enjoying their outside spaces! Whether you enjoy morning runs on Bayshore, afternoons at the beach or by the pool, or all-day boating trips with your family and friends, don’t forget your sun protection! In Florida, we know what to expect during the summer months: 90 degree temperatures, 100% humidity, the occasional sun shower, and the 15 minute deluge that always seems to happen during rush hour! What we don’t expect is that all of that heat and humidity can wreak havoc on your skin. Here are a few myths we have all heard (…and probably believed, at some point!): “I only have to apply sunscreen once to be protected all day!” “If I use sunscreen, I won’t be able to tan!” “It says ‘sweatproof’ and ‘waterproof,’ so I should be fine!” “I don’t need sunscreen when it’s cloudy!”
Let’s be clear, we’ve all made these mistakes, and using sunscreen is only part of the solution. We are potentially exposed to three different types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, including UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. Fortunately, UV-C is blocked by the atmosphere, so unless you are in the Chilean Andes and the hole in the ozone layer has magnified, you are safe! Our skin is mostly damaged by UV-A and UV-B radiation, which can do beneficial things like deepen your skin tone while also doing negative things like promote premature signs of aging such as 32 32
wrinkles or cause sunburns, and increase your risk of developing skin cancer. The best forms of sun protection involve limiting your exposure to damaging UV radiation while blocking the UV rays that reach your skin from causing damage. Wearing protective items like large hats and loosefitting clothing can be both fashionable and skin-savvy. Sunscreens should be ‘broad-spectrum,’ meaning that they are effective protection for both UV-A and UV-B radiation, with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or greater, which only allows 1/30th (or less, with higher SPFs) of the sun’s damaging rays to reach the skin surface. Also, remember to reapply sunscreen regularly, throughout the day, as words like ‘sweatproof’ and ‘waterproof’ are purely marketing terms that are not accurate, as any sunscreen can easily be wiped off with a towel! Finally, even on cloudy days, up to 80% of damaging UV rays can still reach your skin, so don’t forget the sun protection! Skin damage isn’t permanent, but preventative care is always better than dealing with the negative consequences that can add up over time. If you already have evidence of sun damage such as age spots or early wrinkles, a chemical peel is an excellent treatment
option to exfoliate the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and correct pigment irregularities. Many choices are available, depending on your skin’s specific needs as well as the amount of time you have to recover, but most only need 2-3 days of down time. As with any skin treatment, expect some short-term peeling as the dead skin cells are removed, revealing the younger, healthier skin underneath. If you’d rather avoid a visit to the spa, I have a simple at-home skin treatment that is easy to manage, and can be repeated every few weeks! It’s a combination of lemon juice, which has citric acid to help remove dead skin; Aspirin, which is also an anti-inflammatory to reduce redness; and baking soda, to calm and soothe skin. As long as you aren’t allergic to any of the components, this is an easy recipe for you to try at home! - 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice - 3-5 crushed Aspirin tablets - 3 tablespoons of baking soda - ½ cup of water.
Remember, early prevention is the key to having great skin for the rest of your life. And, when in doubt, ask the experts – we are here to help!

I recommend trying this combination on an inconspicuous area first, like the inside of your arm, to make sure it is comfortable for you. First, dissolve the crushed Aspirin and lemon juice in a bowl. Apply it evenly to your face, but I’d recommend avoiding the area around your eyes, where it might irritate your skin too much. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes as you feel it tingle, and then rinse with the baking soda-water mixture to neutralize the acid. Prepare your schedule for a little redness and possibly some peeling in the next several days, as you should avoid excessive sun exposure while your skin is turning over.

Ma Belle Diva Boutique is a veteran/ woman-owned small business based in Tampa. Deidre Spoor started the boutique as a part-time venture to provide trendy, Miamistyle clothing and swimwear to her friends in Tampa. Starting a business was certainly uncharted territory for Spoor. When Kimberlee Curtis relocated to Tampa from Cincinnati in January, next door to Spoor, a friendship quickly developed during daily chats in the dog park. Curtis, who holds a Master’s Degree in Business, took an immediate interest in Spoor's new boutique concept. Realizing each had a unique set of strengths, the two realized it would be a perfect partnership. Curtis' 14 years in a management career and Spoor's knowledge of current fashion trends merged to become Ma Belle Diva Boutique. The vision for growth has manifested quickly as a result of receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback and support from the local Tampa community. Ma Belle Diva Boutique provides women in the Tampa Bay area unique and affordable clothing, swimwear and accessories for every Diva!

STAND OUT This summer is all about making a statement. Bold prints introduced in the spring remain on the scene and they are more vibrant than ever. From floral to novelty prints, you will surely add personality to any look for some fun in the sun.
By Kristin Wright
Florals
Buds have bloomed from head to toe for summer. Bouquets flourish in all shapes and sizes creating illusions on both bright and neutral backgrounds. Even though florals flow from season to season, this summer they are bolder and bigger. Designers have incorporated updated elements as well as global influences through details. For example, brocade florals make an entrance and add such a feminine touch to simplistic designs by Gucci.
Be the Bloom Matching sets are in and are intended to be worn together this season. For summer, try pairing prints on prints on prints to create a full bloom.
Pair It. Wear It. •W ear a floral top and bottom of the same print with a slip on sneaker for a leisure daytime look. Throw on a sandal or wedge to take it up a notch. Add a basic crossbody or tote to finish the look. o Pair either printed piece with a basic to add versatility. For example, pair a floral bottom with a bright colored bodysuit or basic tee that pops the print. • I ncorporate florals into your summer wardrobe with a maxi or romper. These both offer versatility and can be taken from day to night easily. o Add a crisscross flat sandal like the Camimila by Aldo, or a new trendy platform sneaker for day. Steve Madden and Miu Miu have a strong selection of styles that tie back to this trend. Transform to night with a neutral strappy heel. o Don’t be afraid to top off your full bloom with a floral print shoe! I dare you! 36 36
Novelty The 80’s has resurfaced with novelty prints and designs suggesting a modern spin to old school prep. You will see anything from snakes to toucans, pineapples to ice cream cones on apparel and accessories. Tory Burch has some unique pieces in her collection, including a monkey satchel. Kate Spade has incorporated camels and peacocks in both apparel and accessories. You will shine brightly in these playful elements this season. Create a fun look full of personality. Brands like Zara offer some great pieces that are right on trend.
Pair It. Wear It. • No need to be matchy! Mix and match your prints with another print to add some edge. For example, try pairing a novelty short, like J. Crew’s elephant printed short, with a striped top to add some depth. Finish off with basic accessory pieces. Chokers are my go-to for a feminine finish. • Sport a multi trend piece like the off the shoulder striped toucan printed dress from Zara. This dress incorporates all trends for summer! Off shoulder is huge as well as the mixing of bold prints. In this case, the designers have incorporated stripes and novelty. Complete with a simple sneaker like a Chuck Taylor and choker for day.
Summer is about showing your personality at first sight. Stand up and stand out!

SEX! And just like that I have your attention. We're right back where we first started with each other about one year ago. The sun is hot, the weather is beach and the bodies are primed for showing off. Which means it's time for you and I to have an adult conversation, involving that special thing grown folks do. Yes, THAT thing; so don't get your undies in a bunch... literally. Fitness is good for all kinds of health and aesthetic benefits. For example, not only does working out legs efficiently help your lower half power look like the inside of a muscle engine, it also causes your libido to drive like one. That's right, all you super hero beach pump puppies are missing out on what the big dogs already have figured out. The increased blood flow during leg day forces the body to increase its testosterone levels. That's the magic hormone that packs on muscle.
In addition, testosterone helps to combat: • bone loss • loss in skeletal strength • reduced stamina • reduced cognition • depression
muscular
Stick with me guys and gals, that’s not the only body part that gets your motor working. Banded/weighted hip thrusts, V-ups and Judo Pushups all help to activate the muscles used during...um, "nontraditional" love positions with partners. (Think of a Mechanical Bull, bear hugging a lifesize stuff animal standing, and a loyal four-legged creature, respectively)
Channeling my inner Billy Mays; “But wait, there's more!” As you know, you gotta eat well to look better. Let's explore food, my favorite F word, second to only one. (That'd be Forbes if you had to guess; I'm such a narcissist) Men, you didn't know celery is so sexy, it has properties that spike the pheromones because it contains the male pheromones androstenol and androsterone, which has shown to increase flirty behavior among females. And it has a bit of Zinc, which promotes production of testosterone. Don't trip on your way to the checkout line fellas.
Wait wait wait! Don't go yet; I still have another secret to give you. Watermelon is filled with citrulline a mineral that relaxes and dilates the blood vessels. Citrulline is converted in the body to L-Argenine, which is a precursor to Nitric Oxide. If you have NO2 in your body, the traffic in your blood vessels diminishes and your circulatory system becomes like the autobahn of its former self. That’s good news for men and women’s nether regions. You understand what I'm saying right? Put some melon in your diet before Kama Sutra night and you'll be like an aluminum bat during a snowstorm in Chicago. I believe those were the words used... I digress. All this may seem like a lot of info, but I know you're only here for the workout and not the info. I couldn't leave you hanging anyway. So, peace and happiness; and you’re welcome, you sexy mofos. - Coach

A day on Tampa's Just a few years ago, despite being located in one of the most popular areas for beaches and water sports, Tampa's waterfront options were limited, especially in and around the downtown area. In recent years though, the Tampa Riverwalk has seen a revitalization that has brought many more opportunities to the area. With restaurants, museums, water rentals and even bathing fountains, the Riverwalk has become a central hub for cultural activities in downtown, and it's possible to spend a whole day navigating the shores of the Hillsborough River without coming close to running out of things to do. My girlfriend, Chelsea, and I recently did this, and it was a rich and rewarding experience that gave us a new appreciation for the city in which we live. On a scorching day (a record breaking 96 degrees in April!), we filled our water bottles and hopped on our bikes in search of some of the best offerings along the Riverwalk. The bikes were a good option for us because we were able to take more time at some locations (like checking out the Mayor's Mac & Cheese Throwdown) or to move on when we finished an attraction faster than expected. Another great way to travel is on the Pirate Water Taxi which stops at strategically placed docks all along the Riverwalk. The taxi is reasonably priced and a lot more relaxing than walking or biking, and provides some stunning views of Tampa from the water. The next time we decide to spend a whole day on the Riverwalk, we'll choose a hybrid of the two. Coast Bike Share provides bikes throughout Tampa and has stations along the Riverwalk which will allow us to get on and off when we please, and then we can catch the Pirate Water Taxi for the trip home when we're full and tired.

RIVERWALK by Nathan Gardner
How we spent a whole day on the Riverwalk: Ulele: Situated in a renovated, historic pump house at the Riverwalk's northernmost end, Ulele is a tasteful blend of highend decor and rustic details, drawing heavily on Native American inspiration for the design of their space and food. The menu is bold, offering some unusual choices like the Pulpo Carpaccio (thinly sliced octopus covered in a surprisingly spicy piri piri sauce), Alligator Hush Puppies, and "Florida Jumpers" frogs' legs. The Charbroiled
Oysters —barbacoa-grilled and covered with garlic butter and Parmesan and Romano cheeses — come highly recommended and shouldn't be missed. There's also an excellent onsite brewery serving up a few tasty options. The "Wedding Beer" is a perfect choice for those hot and humid Tampa days. It's a refreshing, breezy and barely-sweet fruit beer that finishes with a clean, crisp aftertaste. CONTINUED ON PAGE 42 THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE

Tampa Museum of Art: The Tampa Museum of Art is located in downtown next to Cutis Hixon Park, and boasts stunning architectural details — from the uncountable circles incorporated into the design to the opaque windows surrounding the bottom floor that reflect Tampa's changing moods. The museum houses a small, but a well-appointed collection of Greek and Roman antiquities on permanent display, along with space for several rotating exhibits which provide endless opportunities for new and exciting art. The smaller-scale exhibit areas and wide-open floor plan encourage visitors to spend time taking in and contemplating each piece. Florida Museum of Photographic Arts: The FMoPA is a little hard to find despite being located in a can't-miss building. The Sykes building, or "beer can building" as it's frequently called, is located on the southern end of Curtis Hixon Park and immediately draws visitors' attention. The FMoPA is located in the large cube-shaped section adjacent to Ashley Drive and takes up two entire floors. The museum contains an extensive array photographs including black-and-white portraits of various celebrities, intriguingly arranged landscape pieces, and various sights from around Florida. Anise: Located in the Skypoint building across Ashley Drive from Curtis Hixon Park, Anise bills itself as a "global gastrobar" and serves up an Asian Fusion menu alongside premium cocktails. The decor is a mixture of dark features — like the giant black chandeliers and tables — and Asian-inspired details, including a wall of beautiful black-and-white images over the bar. Some great options on the menu include the sticky buns — which echo Anise's food truck origins — fantastic cheese and charcuterie options, and several options for ramen, tacos, and Jap Chae. For drinks, the Kurrant Bramble has a subtle and refreshing berry flavor, while the Gin Sing will go over well with those looking for something just as refreshing but a little sweeter.

Tampa Water Bikes and Sail Pavilion: There are a few options for watercraft rentals at the dock located just outside the Tampa Convention Center. Tampa Water Bikes are a unique option to have some fun and get some exercise (especially if you're taking the water taxi everywhere). Situated atop two pontoons, the bikes are deceptively stable, easy to peddle, and allow time for a full appreciation of Tampa's beauty from the water. And, once you're all biked out, it's just a short walk up the dock to Sail Pavilion — a popular, dog-friendly place to sit outside and watch the sunset while enjoying a Riverwalk Runner or other specialty cocktail. Tampa Bay History Center: The Tampa Bay History Center is located at the southernmost terminus of the Riverwalk and has a lot of interesting exhibits to appease everyone in the family — including military uniforms and weapons, Native American artifacts, a mock town with explorable buildings, and a video explaining "Cowmen and Crackers" to patrons seated atop saddles. The top floor houses space for temporary exhibits which, when we went, was the nightmare-inducing "Finding Fairyland: Rediscovering Tampa's Lost Theme Park" — a collection of old theme park rides and statues in various states of disrepair. Particularly terrifying was Snow White, the Seven Dwarves and Evil Queen who all seemed to have jumped straight out of a Wes Craven movie, and may or may not come to life at night. Columbia Cafe: Columbia Restaurant in Ybor is the oldest restaurant in Florida. Columbia, which opened in 1905, has been serving Cuban sandwiches to Tampa residents for well over a century, making it a perfect dining choice housed in the Tampa Bay History Center. There's a great, if somewhat small, dining area and bar decked out in rich, ornately carved wood located next to the lobby, but the real gem here is the patio area overlooking the Riverwalk and Garrison Channel separating downtown from Harbour Island. Unchanged for the past 112 years, the Cuban sandwich is a must-order. Both the 1905 salad and pitchers of sangria are made right at the table which makes for a fun experience, especially if you have guests. Our go-to dessert is the bread pudding, but we tried the Mango Mousse Cake on this trip, and it was sweet and light and made for a perfect end of day treat. We could have spent two entire days and I encourage everyone to take advantage of what is available in our own backyard this summer.

UBER, LYFT and the New Downtowner The rideshare industry has exploded in popularity over the past several years with companies devoted to making transportation safe, reliable and enjoyable. At the swipe of a finger and tap of a button, you can hail a car or electric golf cart style car through your smartphone. Within minutes (or in some cases many minutes) you are picked up at your desired location and whisked off to your final destination, whether it's the grocery store, movie theater or the best bar/ restaurant in town. UBER and Lyft have been battling it out in Tampa for some time. However, if you live-work-play in Downtown, we have a new and free alternative‌ the Downtowner.
Why Tampa is requesting rides every day. Owning and maintaining a car can be expensive. At more than $9,000 per year, per household, a car is the second most expensive purchase most will make, yet the average car in the U.S. gets only 4 percent utilization per day. The rideshare industry was born from the idea that by pairing drivers and passengers headed in the same general direction, not only is traffic significantly reduced, but car ownership ultimately becomes optional when you know you have a ride you can rely on when needed. It’s a safe way to get around. While pairing drivers and passengers who don't know each other might seem unorthodox, thanks to the background and car safety checks and real-time ride tracking, hopping in an on-demand ride has become commonplace for Tampa residents. In fact, UBER and Lyft are the fastest growing rideshare services in the country, currently with the ability to cover over 70% of the United States and growing. Ridesharing promotes community and economic growth. Not only is it an efficient way to get from point A to point B, but ridesharing also connects both people and communities. In 2016 alone, more than 327 million Lyft and UBER rides were taken in the United States. This opens the door for people who wouldn't normally cross paths to share a car together. Drivers get to drop off passengers in neighborhoods they might not regularly venture to, and business owners serve customers that previously didn't have easy access to their location. Ridesharing is a powerful driver of economic growth, encouraging local spending and 44 44
pumping money back into the enrichment of neighborhoods. As a driver, ridesharing provides an excellent source of income. Be it primary or supplementary, driving provides flexibility and allows people to own their schedules, clocking in and out when they want, where they want. From coast to coast, teachers, retirees, aspiring musicians and everyone in between are using ridesharing as a source of income. On-demand transportation is proven to reduce drunk driving. According to a recent study, 88 percent of passengers say they are more likely to avoid driving while impaired because of ridesharing, and 53 percent of passengers use the platform to get friends and family home who are intoxicated safely. One tap of a button ultimately leads to saving lives by reducing the number of intoxicated drivers on the road. Whether you're a passenger or driver, ridesharing seeks to get you where you want to go, be it a final destination or a financial goal. Tampa deserves friendly, safe transportation we can rely on, and ridesharing is offering it up in a big way.

Ro Patel & His All-Star Team
Ro Patel is one of Tampa’s best mixologists… hands down! Patel is the mixologist that consults Tampa’s hottest restaurants and bars in the direction of their cocktail menus. However, his story starts way before he conquered Tampa. Patel began his lifelong love affair with bar culture in London circa 1993/94 at the Atlantic Bar & Grill. Shortly after he set up shop as a Bar Consultant to help develop bar programs for hangouts in London, before packing up his shaker tins to assist on projects in the Bahamas, Sydney Australia, & Washington DC, and before moving back to London to work on Virgin Atlantic Airways award-winning Flagship Clubhouse. "The atmosphere of a great bar 46 46
will affect most cultured men and women in approximately the same way. It will conjure relaxation; it will invite depth and savor to fellowship. It will encourage reflection. In short, a great bar is a place of high purpose. A great bar is a way of life.” -Esquire, 1954 “Nice quote taken from the cocktail menu of one of London’s once most Iconic bars The Player., said Patel Patel moved to Sunny Tampa, FL and co-founded Ciro’s Speakeasy in 2010. During his time there, the team and program won many awards both locally and in the nation cocktail community. Since moving on from Ciro's, he opened a one-stop-shop consultancy which has helped with many bars & restaurant openings, a whiskey
club, Liquor Brand Mixology events, music festivals for Tito's Vodka and most recently working on projects in Denver CO. Did we mention Patel is also a National WSWA Mixology winner to boot! “Whilst (means while) moving around every few months consulting has been meaningful and fun! This is the right project, timing, and a unique opportunity to test me by getting back behind the stick' once more.” said Patel. The right project he is referring to is The Collection. “The Collection gives me the chance to develop a long-term view of hospitality and service, support bartenders to become the next generation of owners in addition to collaborating with esteemed peers that add value to the guest experience!” said Patel.
Ro Patel What is your favorite summer cocktail? Negroni 1oz London Dry Gin 1oz Campari 1oz Dolins Sweet Vermouth Gently stirred Poured over rocks Twist of Orange What is the Collection? It's a chance to put a collection of best practices together! Collection of People, Spirits, Beers and Wine! The collection to me is a chance to reset the idea of a 'quality drinking establishment' where we do serve great drinks with premium and fresh ingredients but that’s just a part of the reason you would come here. We value great service foremost. We handpicked the collection team based on their wonderful friendly personalities. They just have more than one string to their bow!
Why did you decide to open it? The chance to work with and help highlight future stars in hospitality. By opening the collection I can spend more time with guests and staff alike. Having a partner like Jamal Wilson, the founder of The Hall, made it possible. Sharing my vision on service and continued learning with the staff makes it even better. It's nice to be back on the bar. What makes The Collection special and unique? Celebrating the classic Americana spirit paired with bold flavors from around the globe. At The Collection, you’ll experience a truly unique bar atmosphere, where every sincere detail is designed to inspire your palette. Why did you name it The Collection? Funny enough... Both Jamal and I had the Idea to name it the Collection. For him it was the Collective Eatery about the hall. For me the Collection name spoke about the collective of the team behind and in front of the bar. So naming the bar The Collection was really the easiest decision.

Why and how did you become involved with The Collection? I was informed about the concept behind the Hall on Franklin and in getting to know Ro Patel over the years, the focus they have on community collaboration and higher education made my involvement in the project a no-brainer. The Collection truly aims to bring together experts in each area of a total bar experience and I am honored to be involved in curating the beer program and tailoring continued education opportunities to the staff. My intention is to ensure each and every guest has a service experience that is knowledgeable on not just the craft beer selection we offer but also has the ability to guide those new to craft beer into a style and selection they will enjoy. We will work with several local breweries to create unique beers including Hidden Springs who will be brewing a Hall exclusive beer to complement our many food selections. What is your favorite summer beer? Typically anything light bright and refreshing. Right now my beach cooler is stocked with Dogfish Head Sea Quench Ale (a session lime tart ale).It is perfect for beach days however choosing a favorite for all summer is near impossible. That’s the great thing about craft beer right now, there is always something new to try!
Why and how did you become involved with The Collection? “The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.” – Samuel Johnson. I am an individual enamored with culture, food, drink, and traveling. As long as I can remember I have had a profound attraction for different cultures and an addiction for adventure. What better way than through wine to bring about language, history, culture and camaraderie. Since working in gastronomy for about 15 years I have continuously found a love for wine and the story it has to tell. When we open a bottle of wine, there inside is a liquid that is the result of nature, labor, and love. The story of wine is the story of human civilization, and that in of itself is something marvelous. That is what I do; I tell the stories and pour the juice. When I was approached to become a part of a new and progressive establishment we call the Hall, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. To contribute to the up and coming Downtown/Tampa Heights scene is an honor for me. As a Tampa native I am excited to share my love of wine with the community and transform the way we think about wine while converting the old stigma of a beverage that so often times is perceived as an elitist libation. What is your favorite summer wine? St. Urbans-Hof Bockstein Riesling! A very regal and elegant wine! Oh did I mention, super refreshing! THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE
