Every day in urban Tampa is New Beginnings. It is amazing to be part of the transition and see it happening in real time. New buildings, businesses and most important people with a vision that have helped make Tampa rank as one of the top most livable places and the top 10 places for young entrepreneurs. Tampa is New Beginnings! In our upcoming summer issue, we will be all about LIVE-WORK-PLAY and showcasing what makes Tampa great. In this issue, we focused on a few of the people that are creating new beginnings. It has been said “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery definition. To imitate someone is to pay the person a genuine compliment — often an unintended compliment.” We would like to congratulate Tampa Downtown for new beginnings. Our focus since the beginning in 2016 was to serve the urban dwellers of Tampa. Since our first issue, we have always been dedicated to LIVE-WORK-PLAY and the people and places that make urban Tampa shine. As we expand this year into new areas with our own new beginnings; this magazine will always remain serving Downtown Tampa and surrounding urban areas as it has since day one. Check out the new collaboration on page 8 that will be bringing a craft brewery to the Channel District, on page 10 read how a business was created out of passion and adversity and turn to page 14 if you want to meet the doctor that is a game changer in tattoo removal and possess the same skills to create new ones. On page 30 see how Dr. Deepak Naidu explains why women and men want different things; especially when it comes to plastic surgery. It was my pleasure to be invited to 72nd Miss Tampa Pageant and The District Magazine was honored to be a sponsor. Meet the new Miss Tampa and the runner-ups on page 20. I also had the pleasure to meet a rising star or as we explained on page 26, the making of a mogul. DJ Josh Acoff is on a mission to fulfill his dreams and he chose Tampa to make that happen. I would like to thank Lindsey Meyer for two years of dedication, creativity and professionalism as the magazine’s photographer. We wish her the best as she dedicates her time as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst helping children full-time. We welcome our new photographer Jai Jacob. As always, I hope you enjoy this issue. Be Part of the Movement!

New Brewery

in a Living Room Atmosphere By Maren Auxier

It is good to be a beer drinker in Tampa Bay, and with the explosion of craft breweries in Tampa, it is only getting better. Consistently ranked among the top brewing scenes in America, Tampa has quickly become a destination for craft beer. Although craft brewing has only become popular over the last ten years, Tampa has been creating beer since 1896. One of the first breweries, The Florida Brewing Company, opened in Ybor City to service the cigar factory workers. A lot has changed since the early days, and Tampa has evolved into a national craft beer lovers’ spot to beercation. Tampa will be the home to a new brewery this spring. If you have been to Channel District in the past 7-8 years, you have likely already been a customer at the place that’s bringing the new brewery to the area. Pour House is the ultimate extension of your living room, especially for Channel District residents. Swing by and you’ll walk into a dog-friendly hangout with comfy sofas, a pool table, and good company. Whether it’s to grab a cup of joe to jump start your morning, or a frosty glass of beer after a long day at the office, Pour House has you covered. And it’s about to get even better. Bottoms up, my friends. Later this year, Pour House will be opening a brewery on location in partnership with Late Start Brewing. Initially, the new brewery will be creating Late Start Brewing beer, but expect to be drinking Pour House label brews soon after. With the addition of Late Start Brewery certainly continues to develop the destination Tampa has for craft beer. Pour House Founder Andy Nietzel is excited about the changes and anyone who has followed Pour House from the beginning knows that change is perhaps their best quality. 88

Andy Nietzel

What has remained consistent, though, is the fact that Pour House is a local stomping ground where neighbors come together. “It’s just a local hangout with craft beer without the misconceptions that a bar normally has,” Nietzel said. “It’s more about friends, family and community than a round of shots.”

The Early Days Pour House is one of Channelside’s OGs, bringing folks together long before talks of Water Street sparked excitement and hope for a more enriching downtown experience. In its early days, Pour House was one of the first retail establishments to open in the new residential area being built, called Channel District. Nietzel laughs when he recalls the story of a lesson learned early on. “When we went to open Pour House, to lay the concrete we had to move a couple of inches of dirt

from our 2,600 square-foot space,” he said. “So we went and grabbed some shovels and decided we were going to do it ourselves instead of paying someone to do it. And we quickly learned just how much three inches of packed, rocky dirt over 2,600 square feet of space actually is.” Luckily, they had a friend who helped them rent a Bobcat, and what they had thought would be a few hours of light shoveling ended up being an all day project. Hard work laid the foundation for many great years to come.

A New Collaboration over Cold Ones Since its early days, Pour House has become an incubator for local entrepreneurs. Two and a half years ago they formed a partnership with Ginger Beard Coffee, which allowed them to extend their open hours by serving coffee in the morning. Now they will form a similar partnership with Late Start Brewing. The new collaboration is with three local brewers who were a part of Cigar City’s early days. The Late Start Brewery team consists of Jordan Copher, Nick Streeter and Tyler Sankey. Together, they

are getting a little bit of a late start in brewing on their own. However, it has given them the time to create their beers through experience over the past 5 years. They will not be using gimmicks or beer slogans, just a laser focus on creating good craft beer. Their game plan is not to reinvent the wheel, nor do they claim to be the best. The brewers simply want to brew beers that they would drink themselves, which leaves their options pretty wide open. Customers can look forward to unique brews, like tequila sunrise and cucumber gimlet goses, and many other of your favorite styles. The decision to jump into the brewing game is perhaps a reflection of the growth of the craft beer scene in the Tampa Bay area. “I think the amount of good brewers we have down here stepping out into their own programs really has made the area a great beer destination,” Nietzel said. With the opening of the new brewery, Pour House has certainly solidified its place as a beer-lover’s destination in Tampa’s Channel District. You can vacation, or you can

TRAVR Experience life through travel.

Do you ever long for more adventure in your life? Maybe you’d love to go somewhere exotic, like Thailand, but can’t think of anyone to go with you. Stop scrolling through Facebook and liking other people’s vacation pictures, when you can have an amazing experience of your own. Travr, founded by Tampa native Clint Bertucci, is your passport for an incredible global travel experience. Travr is a travel community for active, young professionals. Clint knows a little about travel, having over 70 stamps in his own passport. Clint didn’t start off as a traveler, though. For years, Clint worked in the mortgage industry, which gave him little opportunity to make the time to travel abroad. “There always seemed to be a reason to push it off till next year,” he said.

A Hard Learned Lesson in the Corporate World As most Americans during the 2008 economic crisis, Clint suffered major losses. Perhaps even more significant losses than the average person, because he was part of the same industry that had collapsed. He started to lose everything he had spent years working so hard to attain. However, adversity breeds excellence, and through his adversity Clint made the decision to change the direction of his life. “I was determined to discover my true passion in life, no matter what it took,” he said. He sold many of his belongings, including the ultimate “I made it in corporate America” Rolex watch, and set his compass in the direction of Italy. Thus began Clint’s mission to take back his freedom and love for life. Clint left the corporate world to reinvent himself, 10 10

and returned back to college to complete his degree and study abroad.

The Trip to Italy that Changed Everything Clint landed in Florence, Italy and started his journey studying abroad. While in Florence, he took weekend trips to various countries. He immediately knew traveling was the passion he had been searching for. With money running on empty, down to one Euro to his name, Clint placed panic aside and created a way to create cash to make it home. While videoing people sitting at a café in Italy, a bell went off in his head. He quickly did a few edits, and offered the video to the owner of the café in return for 50 Euro. The café owner agreed, and a business was born. Shortly after, Clint was shooting video throughout Italy, sometimes for over 500 Euro per video, steadily saving his hard earned cash for a plane ticket back home. After several trips back and forth to Italy, Clint returned to Tampa, Florida, and attended The University of South Florida to complete his degree. It wasn’t long after graduation that he was packed, bag in hand, and ready to travel again. This time he would be traveling throughout 30 countries, both solo and with groups. During his travels, he worked independently, marketing for various foreign restaurants, nightlife and travel companies — and even did a stint as a tour guide. All while making countless contacts and resources as well as finding sites, foods and the adventures that people only read about. CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

The Beginnings of an Epic Adventure Company Clint is now back in Tampa, and still following his passion. A little over three years ago he founded Travr by combining all of his travel experiences with his incredible passion for travel, planning and entertaining to create the ultimate traveling experience for small groups. “Collect more stamps, less possessions,” he says. Travr provides adventures for young adults. The destinations and itineraries are personally designed for each client with the greatest destinations and best activities.

“This experience is all about you, so there’s always free time to explore at your own pace, sleep in or skip an excursion at any time,” Clint said. Traver has certainly found a niche in creating a more intimate experience, with a focus on smaller groups as well as customized individual experiences. Travr customers are thrilled with the service that allows them a great adventure while meeting new people. “I went on the Thailand trip solo, and not once did I feel alone,” said Amy Zollinger of San Diego, California. “I had a fantastic roommate and met some pretty amazing people. The adventures we experienced were simply unforgettable. I would have never experienced Thailand in this unique way if it wasn’t for Clint’s authentic leadership and well thought out excursions. You can vacation, or you can Travr. I can’t wait for the next trip.” 12 12

Dr. Ramos embarked on his new beginning in 2012 when he found himself in Tampa, FL pursuing residency training in Internal Medicine with a focus in acute-care medicine. He completed his MD at USF College of Medicine following a transfer from San Juan Bautista School of Medicine and revived his past as a tattoo artist upon becoming certified under Sauler Institute of Medical Tattooing at UPenn shortly after completing his residency. What is laser tattoo removal? It is highly specialized outpatient procedure whereby un-wanted tattoos can be removed with the use of a laser, most of the time with complete removal. What are the best reasons to remove a tattoo? New beginnings! People often get a tattoo during a moment of passion or deep emotion, and their lives move beyond it, I feel like I help them open that door! Will laser tattoo removal completely eliminate every tattoo? In unique circumstances, certain tattoos may not come completely off. While the majority of them eventually do, the industry of laser removal continues to be challenged with certain types of tattoos that pose unique dilemmas when complete removal is an expectation. What kind of tattoos typically cannot be removed and why? This can be very complex, as major determinants are skin type, colors involved, ink types, involvement of scars, and multiple cover-up jobs. Often, patients with multiple cover-ups, tattoos done in prison, or tattoos from which scars were generated can pose challenges requiring sharp expertise, and often may still not completely disappear. What other options are available to hide a tattoo? It’s truly bewildering the amount of products available these days. They can range from specialized tattoo makeup to color-matched multi-layer sleeves, and everything in between. On a more extreme note, certain people who have too much density and extent of ink may opt to get “black-out” jobs in which black ink is used to disguise a prior design, but I am mostly intrigued by the makeup options available. What is the difference between the old laser removal procedures and current? Literally a world apart! Not so long ago, tattoo removal required the acceptance of several understandings. For one, scarring will happen, secondly complete removal will simply NOT be achieved, and most startlingly, excruciating pain is to be expected—often to the point of requiring general anesthesia! With today’s technology, a session with very limited discomfort can literally be done during a lunch break with a very short and tolerable recovery with un-matched results! What type of laser removal device to you use and why? I use the Cutera Enlighten III. I love this machine, because it features the most unique settings I have seen on any platform. Likewise, my outcomes and satisfaction feedback make me very confident that the services I offer my patients are no less than state-of-theart to bring them the new beginnings they deserve! Who typically performs laser removal procedures at tattoo removal clinics, who performs all of your 16 16

procedures and is it advantage to be performed by a medical doctor and why? Lately, I am noticing an up-trend in the amount of procedures now being performed almost exclusively by mid-level providers at med-spa’s such as Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. In my clinic, all laser tattoo removal procedures are physicianperformed by physicians that are formally trained in laser removal and also licensed and formally apprenticed as tattoo artists. I think the benefit of who performs said procedures really comes down to the clinical experience and breadth of training of the operator, which bodes well for anyone who has the “hands on” experience. In that regard, I can say as a physician with around fifteen combined years of training (includes MD, residency training, tattoo artist apprenticeship with license, and laser specialty training) that I do feel like I can approach just about any tattoo removal case with a very broad fund of experience to offer my patients, and while it is largely related to my training as an MD, my background in tattooing adds a world of a difference in how I approach tattoos as a tattoo specialist. Do you have a background as a tattoo artist and if so why is that an advantage? Yes. I am a licensed tattoo artist and I did a formal apprenticeship and licensure under Jonathan Clark in Tampa, FL. It is an incredible advantage because there are so many complex nuances in technique and understanding how a tattoo is made that it allows me to make very individualized approaches to even the most complicated cases of tattoo removal. I am a believer that we are also learning every day, and having the added skill set in tattooing also has given me some of the most privileged learning access to some of the top specialists in the world in both realms! What is color theory and why is important to understand if you are removing a tattoo? I can best summarize color theory as the study of how primary colors form complex art. Yes—it explains how so many colors can come from just blue, red, and yellow, but it also gives us a guide on how to interpret the rich and infinitely beautiful complexity behind photorealism and light-source theory. It is important to understand this in tattoo removal, because color is nothing but the frequency at which a material bounces light—that is what lasers “know”. Understanding how color mixing takes place and how they are introduced in a work of skin art has everything to do with the approach one will take. Sure, a tattoo can be removed without this knowledge, but planning is everything! When planning is done right, it reduces the amount of sessions as well as the financial impact on the patient. Do you offer any type of guarantee and if so explain? Yes. I offer what we call our “lifetime guarantee.” What this means is that I will evaluate a given piece to be removed and come up with a quote based on the amount of anticipated sessions a tattoo will need. By the end of those sessions, I may recommend a defined

amount of additional paid sessions based on the tattoo’s progress, but beyond those, I will continue to treat the patient until the removal is maximized, at no additional cost to them. This is intended to alleviate a very commonly encountered situation where patients are perpetually over-charged with no end in sight, simply because it is “cosmetic”. I would personally never want to be trapped in that loophole, so I make a point to free my patients of that worry. How many procedures does an average tattoo take to remove and how long from start to finish? I have had procedures that are done in a single session, I have seen other cases that have taken up to eight or more sessions and we are still seeing some lingering

pigment. While the latter tends to be less common, I can usually achieve satisfactory results at between four and six sessions on average. While this is a very rough estimate due to the amount of factors I consider when planning a removal, it puts a meaningful removal within a realistic goal at my clinic. What is the best way to find out if you are a great candidate for tattoo removal?

Come in for a consultation! I love to meet people, hear their stories, and learn how I can alleviate their worries and educate them about tattoo removal! Best of all, it’s free!

! E R U C E S unexpected happen while away from home."

Vacation may be a time to relax, but things can take a serious downturn if you lose your passport or if there is disastrous weather at your destination - or worse, you need an emergency medical evacuation. Though travel insurance can seem like just one more expense, without it, an emergency evacuation can cost over $100,000! Travel insurance is a simple way to protect your belongings and minimize losses. Angela Wong of USAA Travel Services says, "Travel protection, offered through companies like Travel Insured International, provides travelers with that extra peace of mind so that they're covered should the

22 22

To get a quote, you will need the following information: • Number of travelers • Age of travelers • Trip dates

• Overall trip cost (which includes prepaid, non-refundable expenses such as accommodations, airfare, cruises, tours and excursions) Tip: To compare quotes and make more sense of them, divide the quote by the number of days you'll be traveling to get the cost of coverage per day.

In most cases, the chances are that your travels will go without a hitch. However, if they don't, you could be in real financial trouble. Wong adds, "Benefits often provide coverage for emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and interruption protection, medical insurance and baggage insurance." • Trip cancellation or interruption: With trip interruption coverage, you'll have the money to refund the expenses of a new return ticket or to stay in a comfortable hotel. • Emergency illness or injury: With travel medical coverage, you won't be paying a huge medical bill. You'll also have assistance services - in your own language - to locate a suitable medical facility and arrange transportation. • Baggage delay, loss or theft: With coverage for delayed bags, you can relax. You'll also be reimbursed for the essential items you need to start enjoying your trip. • Bankruptcy of travel supplier: You'll be able to recoup your expenses and reschedule your vacation.

• Weather-related delay: With protection against weather damage, you'll be able to recover your pre-paid costs while travel assistance services will help you arrange a vacation to a new location. With these coverage options, it is important to be upfront about pre-existing conditions and read the fine print to understand what you're paying for. Remember: Don't pick one just because it's cheap; make sure you understand your needs and purchase one that makes sense. While people understand the importance of travel insurance, they don't often understand how it works. It's really quite easy and no different than auto or home insurance. If an incident occurs, just contact your travel protection provider and start a claim to receive reimbursement and assistance. At the end of the day, a vacation is about spending time with loved ones, unwinding from the daily routine and making happy memories. It's not about worrying endlessly about all the things that could go wrong. Therefore, when it comes to protecting ourselves and our precious belongings, we shouldn't think twice about travel insurance - it's a must.

The Making of a

MOGUL

DJ JOSH ACOFF Josh Acoff began his music career with a string of luck and today he is paving his way to becoming a mogul. Acoff is a 23-year old from Alabama that used music to become a better version of him. He came to Tampa only six months ago and has already started making major moves with his music.

You have been described as a DJ, aspiring actor, designer, music producer, and entrepreneur. What one title do you prefer or is there a title that would cover all the above? Music has been a huge part of my life for so long but today I feel I am best described as entrepreneur that is involved in every aspect surrounding music. I’ll always be a DJ because that is where my roots came from. However, I am involved in everything from producing to representing artist.

Who were your favorite three artists at age 13, 18 and now today? At age 13 I was into 50 Cent, at 18 I went back to Tupac and today I’m really feeling LIL UZI VERT. How long have been in Tampa and why the move? I’ve been in Tampa for only six months. I moved from Atlanta because I felt there was more opportunity in Tampa. Atlanta is already a huge music city. I want to create Tampa to be the same.

How old are you? 23

Tampa has a long history in music dating back to 1910 but best known for the blues movement throughout the 1930-40’s. The Central Ave District attracted artists like Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, and many others. It has been said the dance The Twist was invented on Central Avenue, inspiring the song created by Hank Ballard, which was later made famous by Chubby Checker.

Who is Josh Acoff personally? Honestly, I’m just kid from rural Alabama that always believed anything is possible and life does not have a ceiling. People often say “the sky is limit.” I feel there is no limit!

Today Tampa is breathing again and a ton of exciting changes are happening. How do you see the Tampa music scene now and in the future? I feel Tampa is a goal-line filled with hidden talent. The growth will only bring even more talent.

Where did you grow up? (Explain what growing up was like for Josh Acoff and how it affected who you are today) I grew up in Alabama and was raised by a single Mother. We experienced a lot of struggle and adversity. Having nothing has made me appreciate everything. I was fortunate to dream big because most of the people from where I grew up never had any other picture than struggle. I used the adversity as a motivation to succeed.

Do you see yourself influencing a movement in Tampa? Yes, I know I will. I’m in the right place at the right time and I’m surrounding myself with amazing people. I have the passion and drive and won’t stop until I make it happen.

Do you favor or consider yourself stronger at any one role/title mentioned above? I don’t at all because I’m passionate about all it!

How long have you been involved in music and how would you describe DJ Acoff when he started? I have been involved in music since I was a little kid. I grew up playing instruments in our church and I was always part of band in school. When I first started to DJ I did so off my phone because I did not have enough money to buy DJ equipment. While all friends were playing video games I would be playing music. They became my audience and would let me know if what I was playing was dope or not. What is crazy, when I first started college I was sent a rebate check for $5000. For no reason and to this day don’t know why but when you’re struggling you don’t ask questions. I gave my Mother half to help out the family. I took the other half and purchased DJ equipment. It was like an angel was helping me achieve my passion. Game changer! Why did you get involved in music? It gave me an escape and no matter how I was feeling music always put me in a better place. Who currently is a huge influencer for you and why? Sean Combs (P Diddy) and Dr. Dre. Especially Dre because he started as a DJ and became a mega producer. 28 28

What is your favorite Tampa restaurant? The Big Easy in Ybor City. Where is your favorite Tampa hangout? The beach hands down! Growing up in Alabama I never experienced beaches. My nightspot would be Franklin Manor. I love the vibe there. Is Dj Acoff single? Yes single as a pringle. If you were hosting a party for friends, what would you wear, what would you be drinking, and what would be the first song on your playlist? I would be in Gucci drinking Husky Vodka listening to 21 Savage. What is your favorite non-music related activity? One reason I love Tampa is we are surrounded by water and I love to be out on a boat and just relax and chill on the water. It gives me sense of peace. Explain success in one word? Inner peace with confidence. Success is so much that it could not be explained in one word. What motivates you? My family is my biggest motivation. When I think of where we came from and how far I’ve been able to succeed it continues to drive me to never want to go back to the struggle.

Why Women and Men Want Different Things (especially when considering plastic surgery!) By Dr. Deepak Naidu

You’ve undoubtedly heard this expression before: women and men (usually it’s reversed, but not in my experience!) want different things. It can be said about relationships, career choices, even what to wear out to dinner! When it comes to plastic surgery, we all agree on goals like boosting self-confidence, looking and feeling better, and getting noticed. However, women and men do want very different things surgically when considering cosmetic breast surgery! Some women just aren’t born with the breast shape they want, while other factors such as time, weight changes, and pregnancy and breast feeding can cause other changes in breast shape and fullness. Maybe you’ve already had breast surgery, and

30 30

recover faster with smaller incisions while minimizing the risk of infection. On some level, men may have it easier when talking about male breast surgery. Infrequently, men ask about chest enhancement with pec implants when the gym doesn’t give them their desired gains. More commonly though, men (over 50%, actually!) have some degree of extra breast tissue, known as gynecomastia, that can be very distressing. This may impact how clothes fit, how comfortable you are taking off your shirt, and your selfconfidence. Never fear, there is still hope. Depending on the combination of extra skin and extra tissue, surgical options such as liposuction or direct excision can remedy the problem. Ultrasonic lipo has the benefit of causing extra skin to shrink, while power-assisted lipo easily removes dense breast tissue.

your breasts have changed over time? Even if your implants fit you at age 22, you may find that they’re too small, too large, or just not the right ‘look’ for you anymore at 40. More importantly, we now have many more options in breast implants compared to even ten years ago, to help you achieve your desired breast goals! First and foremost is communicating your goals and desires to your board-certified Plastic Surgeon. During your consultation, you should discuss implant material (saline vs. silicone), shape (round vs. anatomic), and size/volume. Depending on your expectations, breast augmentation and possibly a breast lift (mastopexy) may be needed. In my practice, I have developed a technique to minimize your recovery period to just a weekend so that breast augmentation surgery can easily fit into your busy schedule! My combination of the latest gummy implants, above the muscle placement, and no-touch technique help my clients

In some cases, surgically removing the extra skin and tissue may be needed to meet your expectations; fortunately, these incisions heal well and gradually will fade over time. Always ask to see before-and-after photos during your consultation so that you can have a better idea of what to expect. Finally, if you want to be beach-body ready by summer, remember that it may take up to several months to see your final results, so schedule your surgery dates accordingly! Ultimately, both women and men want the same things from plastic surgery to look as good as they feel, and to get noticed! My advice to anyone who is considering cosmetic surgery is the same: do your research, ask for referrals to board-certified Plastic Surgeons, and choose the surgeon that best understands your goals and expectations!

It’s all in the details for By Kristin Wright

Spring blooms with retro florals, art-inspired prints and an introduction of lavender as the IT pop color. Pastels and soft shades make an entrance but were secondary to shades of lavender during fashion week. We are vowed to see updates to trends from previous seasons but with BOLD and non-simplistic elements such as ruffles and fringes. Pack up your sweaters and shift those jackets back to the corner. It’s time to bring those transitional pieces forward and update your wardrobe for spring.

2018

The Pantone Color Institute, which is a color consulting company well known in the fashion world, picks a color of the year following New York Fashion week. This color reflects the attitude of the trends seen on the runways. This year’s color was “ultra violet”. Interestingly enough, when looking at the top ten color palettes for spring, four were hues of purple. The other colors include shades of yellow, reds and greens. I hope you took notes during Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl performance! JT and his crew gave a clear illustration of spring’s direction—mixing of prints, a remix to athletic wear and brights dancing in the background. Contributor Kristin Wright 32 32

Daytime Shine DJ Khaled isn’t the only one “shining” in the New Year. Shimmer and shine carry over from holiday and will be incorporated into everyday wear in a more subtle way. Ladies, you will see shine on tops, bottoms and everything in between, making your day-to-night looks a cinch. Nothing says personality more than metallic and patent textures.

Check this out Last spring, horizontal and vertical stripes were paired. This year, checks are mixed from head to toe to create an eye-catching illusion. Take this trend to the next level by mixing with a retro floral. • The key to this trend? Offset with a basic shoe. • If mixing and matching prints is too far out of your element, you can always incorporate this into your wardrobe with tops or bottoms, pairing and wearing with a solid.

Athletic Wear Athletic wear has become a wardrobe essential over the last year. However, this season truly speaks to versatility. Designers are paring and wearing with wovens, plaids and outerwear such as hoodies and windbreakers. One key item will be the track pant, BUT no longer paired with the matching jacket. • Ladies, you will see the track pant paired with blazers and more structured pieces to create a lax chic look. Layer with a basic tee if jacket is printed or a statement tee. Pair with a sneaker or dare to wear with a heel or sleek bootie. • Graphic and statement tees continue from previous seasons, but sporty tees take the forefront. It’s truly a #TB with retro old-school logos on tees for both men and women. CK, Puma, Adidas and even Tommy have released capsules that scream 90’s. • Any of these looks are perfectly paired with a statement sneaker. Brands have even gone retro on their shoe game, like the reintroduction of the original Nike Air Max. • The slip-on sneaker is seen all around from Balenciaga to Steve Madden and every brand in between. Sports brands like Nike and Adidas started this trend and fashion brands were sure to catch on quickly. This sneaker will be paired with casual dresses to your fav cutoff shorts. • Windbreakers. Windbreakers. Windbreakers. This will be the perfect layering option that will carry us into summer. Not only paired back to athleisure wear, but an easy add-on to any daytime fit.

Before you spring forward, you can be assured that 2018 definitely has something in store. It’s all in how you Pair It. Wear It. THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE

RESOLUTION 2018: MULTIPLY YOUR TIME by Kristin Leigh

Imagine if you could multiply time. Double the amount of hours in your day. Watch one dollar magically turn into three. Imagine if you could hold the same amount, or even increased amounts, of responsibility, yet somehow manage to live a more balanced, healthier life.

I had always been one to just wing it. You know, skip the routine and just live in that YOLO mindset. Eat the cookie, YOLO. Hit the snooze button, YOLO. Buy the coffee, YOLO. Pay the bills later, YOLO. Here I was for YEARS thinking that I was doing myself a favor by living this way. I might’ve felt great for that minute I made my YOLO decision, but let’s be real, how much in totality did I actually accomplish with this mindset versus what I could’ve accomplished had I known what it meant to MULTIPLY TIME. A brilliant guy named Rory Vaden introduced

this multiplying time concept to me, and seven minutes into his lecture I was hooked. It made total sense. Yet all it required was a new way of thinking.

Definition please. Having a multiplier mindset means you choose to invest your time, or your money, into things that will bring you multiple instances of return. Rather than spend $1 or one hour of time in return for one benefit RIGHT NOW, a multiplier will pass on that opportunity and instead spend $1 or one CONTINUED ON PAGE 36

hour of time on something that will bring them multiple, repetitive benefits in the near future. You can apply this to every aspect of your life, personally and professionally. From how you do chores, to how you spend money, to how you can become insanely productive at work, and even to how you communicate! It is so simple. It just requires you to think a little differently.

Here are four simple changes I made in just the first 30 days of 2018 that have already made me so much more efficient. Try these out for yourself now!

1

Figure out what you can automate, delegate, or eliminate. Make a list of everything you feel responsible for in your life, both personally and professionally. If any of these items don’t require your unique personality and skillset, then find tools to either automate them or spend a few hours training someone else to do them for you. This is imperative if you’re in growth mode. What are some common examples? Automatic bill pay, virtual assistants, HootSuite for social media management, email campaign tools, delegate work to your employees or kids, or turn on Roomba to clean your floors while you work.

2

Categorize your inbox and dedicate time blocks for each category. Categorize your day job, communications, and responsibilities. Then, carry these categories through to your inbox and your calendar. For example, I’m a recruiter so I can break my day into the following categories – LinkedIn sourcing and resume reviews, phone interviews, candidate correspondence, manager correspondence, offers and compensation, and other administrative tasks. Next, I assign dedicated time blocks for these tasks every 1-2 days. Multitasking often does way more harm than good if you don’t know how

36 36

to do it right, so you’ve got to create time blocks and stick to them. This gives your brain time to operate at 100% capacity versus switching back and forth throughout the day. Next, and MOST IMPORTANT. Create these exact same categories in your inbox. As emails come in, assign them the respective category and put them on hold until it’s time for you to work in that category. You can sort your Outlook inbox by category assignments. So if you’ve dedicated 1-2pm as candidate follow-up time, then you just filter your inbox for that category color and go to work.

3

Email templates are a godsend. The amount of time we spend teeing up emails is insane, this will change your life. Reflect on the most common emails you send, or even the most common responses you make to emails, and save these into Outlook templates. You can highlight the few areas in the email header or body that you might want to personalize, but the important thing here is

that you spend one hour building your email foundation to save hundreds of hours across the many emails you will send in your future.

4

Meal prepping is not just for your health. Why spend one hour prepping lunch and dinner for the next day when you can spend that same hour prepping MORE food for the next five days? You’re already in the kitchen with your oven on, just add more food, ration everything out, and you won’t have to spend another hour in your WEEK thinking about lunch or dinner. Just these four changes alone have given me hours of my week back. The key here is to maintain that multiplier mindset in each choice you make. Will this decision benefit me just this once now, or many times in my near future? Who wouldn’t want the latter? I’ve become hooked on this mindset so will be sharing many more ideas, and would LOVE to hear your ideas as well, on SUITSANDSNEAKS.COM! See you there! THE DISTRICT - TAMPA’S URBAN DWELLING MAGAZINE

R O W R U YO Setting intentions is a powerful thing. Then when you have that shiny new gym membership in hand, you feel like nothing stands between you and your goals to get in shape once and for all.

The trouble is lack of motivation, unpreparedness and busy schedules have a way of interfering with our plans. If you find yourself struggling to stick to your goals, you're in good company. A whopping 67 percent of people surveyed by Statistic Brain in 2017 said they have gym memberships they never use. Even after a great start, you may find yourself struggling to find motivation to stay on track. Try one of these tips to make it easier to make your fitness regimen stick and most importantly - feel good while getting fit!

Get a workout buddy: If getting out of bed or off the couch is your biggest challenge, it's time to use the phone-afriend solution for some motivation. Find someone you like who's at a similar fitness level and make plans to meet up for a workout. Psychologically, you'll be much more likely to show up for the class, the weight session or the morning run when you know someone's waiting for you. Plus, working out will be a breeze with your buddy! 38 38

Streamline your routine: Don't let your fear of sweat keep you from getting fit. With a few tricks, you can get back to glam in minutes, even when you lack time to shower. First, make smart use of the tools they have on hand at the gym. Grab some extra towels and pound out that treadmill run with the high-powered fan on full blast. In the locker room, hand dryers (and a dab of dry shampoo) are great for getting your tresses looking great again. Cleansing cloths at the ready can also be a lifesaver. Summer's Eve Cleansing Cloths let you freshen up on the go and are balanced to a woman's natural pH, so you'll always leave the gym feeling fresh and ready to take on the world.

Inspire your ears: Let's face facts: Workouts get tedious. If the thought of sprinting and lifting your way through the next circuit bores you to tears, try uploading your playlist with fast-paced music that gets your

T U O K heart racing. Don't worry what others think - this is for your ears only! If it makes you feel good, you'll be more likely to experience a positive workout.

Be ready for action: As soon as you're home from your session, re-pack your gym bag as soon as possible so you'll never waste a moment hunting around the house for your workout gear, such as sneakers, earbuds and products that help you ease back into your day

Update your attire: Ever notice how easy it is to get out of bed when you know you have a new outfit to wear to work? Feeling good about how you look can put a spring in your step and motivate you to get up and out the door. When you notice that your fitness routine is lagging, maybe it's time to spruce up your workout attire. Bonus: If you've lost a few pounds, you'll get an extra lift from that ego boost!

5 Cost Saving Tips

for your Pet’s Medical Expenses

Pet parents know that there's nothing like the love of furry family members. Keeping your pets healthy is a priority because you want them to live as long as possible. However, health care costs for pets are expensive, and if you are dealing with additional expenses such as prescriptions for chronic conditions, it can become a burden to your budget.

Fortunately, there are several things pet owners can do proactively to keep pets healthy and save money on health care costs.

40 40

1 2

Invest in preventative care

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is just as applicable to pets as it is to their human caregivers. One of the most important things a pet parent can do to ensure the ongoing health of any animal is to bring them in for annual checkups whether they are experiencing health issues or not. During wellness checkups, veterinarians can screen for a variety of health conditions. They provide insight on diseases, age-related concerns, dental health, nutritional considerations and so much more. Plus you're able to provide your pet with important vaccinations. Regular checkups help vets identify problems sooner rather than later, and this can translate to more affordable health care costs to pet parents in the long run.

Get an Inside Rx Pets prescription card

Costs for managing your pet's health can be a bear with pet owners spending more than $8 billion on prescription and over-the-counter medications annually. The Inside Rx Pets program offers savings on commonly prescribed medications such as insulin and antibiotics, as well as seizure, glaucoma and anti-inflammatory drugs. The Inside Rx Pets savings card is not insurance; it is a savings card you can use for certain human medications that may be prescribed for your

pet. A complete list of the medications with which you can use the Inside Rx Pet card, as well as pricing information and other details, can be found at https://InsideRx.com/Pets.

3 4 5

Benefiting from these discounts is easy for pet parents: If your pet's veterinarian writes a prescription for an applicable medication, simply download the free discount card from the Inside Rx Pets website and present it with the prescription at one of the 40,000 participating pharmacies located across the U.S. that fill prescriptions for animals. These include national chains such as Kroger Family of Pharmacies, CVS and Walgreens (yes, the same pharmacies you go to for your own medications).

Exercise and focus on nutrition

Obesity is a growing concern for many pets. Poor nutrition paired with limited exercise causes pets to put on additional weight. This weight can put them at higher risk for health concerns like diabetes, osteoarthritis and ligament injuries. These health concerns not only risk the quality of life for Fluffy or Fido, but also can deeply impact your pocketbook. Pets, just like humans, require exercise and proper nutrition to stay healthy and feel their best. Whether that's letting your rabbit out of the cage to run or going on a walk with your dog, be sure to make regular exercise a part of your fur family's routine. If you're unsure what is appropriate for your pet, call your veterinarian or bring it up at a wellness visit. They'll be delighted you reached out for more information to keep your pet healthy.

Start an emergency fund

Choosing between a pet and an unexpected health expense is something no one wants to experience. Being prepared can make a big difference when facing difficult decisions, so it's wise to have savings set aside in case of a rainy day. Some people are starting pet health savings accounts (HSAs) that are similar to the accounts that people hold for themselves to pay for medical expenses. Whether you choose that path or a traditional savings account, when you have an emergency fund you won't have to worry about any unexpected expenses, so you can simply focus on getting your pet well again.

Keep your pet smoke free

A recent study demonstrated an increased risk of malignant lymphoma (also called lymphoma or lymphosarcoma) in pets with exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). The relative risk for malignant lymphoma in cats with any household ETS exposure was almost 2 ½ times higher than that seen in cats that lived in smoke-free households. This study and others also strongly suggest a link between oral cancers in cats and third hand smoke. It is thought that cats groom the toxins contained in tobacco smoke out of their fur, which damages tissues in their mouths. This eventually leads to oral cancer. Dogs can become seriously ill after long term exposure to second and third hand smoke as well. Several studies have determined that cancer of the respiratory tract was more common in dogs that were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. Interestingly, the type of cancer the dogs got was influenced by the shape of their heads. The risk of nasal cancer increases by 250% when dogs with long noses were exposed to tobacco smoke. On the other hand, dogs with short or medium noses tended to develop lung cancer under similar conditions. There are many studies over the past 10 years that demonstrate the damage that tobacco smoke does to the lining of the respiratory tract and possible links to non-cancerous diseases such as chronic bronchitis and asthma.

Being proactive is important for keeping your pets healthy for many years. From scheduling annual wellness visits to their nutrition and regular exercise routines, there are many easy actions pet parents can take today to reduce costs so furry family members stay well. Portico Café Creating New Beginnings Social, Spiritual and Artistic by Melanie Hicks

“Just when the caterpillar thought her life was over, she began to fly” - Anonymous

When you step foot into the Portico Café, you are struck by the modern furniture, the friendly staff and the smell of delicious food. The Wi-Fi is as fast, free and unlimited as the smiles and the building has a designated free parking lot, a unicorn for coffee shops downtown. I had the fantastic pleasure of sitting down with Justin DeRosa, pastor and lead man at the Portico to learn their story. Portico Café sits on an entire city block off Florida Avenue on the edge of downtown. It’s an abandoned Church campus with a vivid history, a fresh coat of paint and a renewed purpose. Founded in 1846, Portico Café is rooted in what was the oldest church in Tampa. The current campus, built in the 1960s during the Church’s height, was abandoned in 2011 as the aging congregation could

no longer support its operations. For three years the Hyde Park Methodist Church brainstormed and planned on how to reinvent this asset for the current needs of Tampa. They came to three underlying desires: One, to activate the block, two, to be a gift to the city, and three, to make an impact on people struggling on the margins. Transforming this decades old space that had been abandoned for two years was no small feat. Roofing, electric, air, flood damage - all a distant memory from this bright modern space. And so Portico Café and Event Space were born. The campus concept is a figurative umbrella set out to CONTINUED ON PAGE 44

enhance the social, spiritual, artistic and social fabric of downtown Tampa. And they do that through a variety of initiatives. First, the coffee shop, where they hire folks transitioning out of social service programs and need that first shot at a solid full time job. They pay them a living wage and empower them with job skills, healthcare and most importantly, integrity. But do not be misled, the café has a mission and a purpose, but the food is delicious! In the creation of the café they pulled in Erin Guggino, former Oxford Exchange chef, and a team of amazingly talented people to develop a concept and menu that rivals any breakfast in town. The ingredients are fresh and made to order and include items like eggs, goat cheese, tomatoes and spinach on fresh ciabatta. The café is a special part of the Portico’s mission but the community outreach is the heart. They engage people in “contemplative practices” that include meditation, advocacy to give a voice to important societal issues, and homeless initiatives where they partner with existing not for profit or workforce housing organizations. They focus on allowing, inviting, participating, as different groups talk about important issues. They offer documentary films, porch party potlucks and one Sunday night congregation gathering. They also have meditation in the historic chapel at 12:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, simply a group of people gathered to sit in silence for 20 minutes.

44 44

Finally, they activate the event space by partnering with the downtown partnership on events such as Fourth Fridays, when they join the various art spaces open for free to the public. Other events include open mic nights, music series and a variety of events offered by local nonprofits or NGOs. They offer full use of their space for free to these organizations for events, meetings or gatherings, only asking for them to utilize the café catering as part of the event. For Justin and his staff, there is more to a warm cup of coffee than the beverage within, “We wanted to be a gift. We wanted to activate the space and to not forget the poor. And so that's how we focused our attention. We find different ways to utilize the space. Obviously the coffee shop, which is open for people to just come and drink a cup of coffee or to work with really high speed Internet. But also to remember the three core values: creating an important conversation, creating an impactful connection and participating in our community.” There are a lot of wonderful coffee shops and cowork spaces in Tampa, each with their own vibe and personality. But there is something irreplaceable about The Portico. The people, the mission, the energy and the generosity of spirit for our community. I encourage you to come for the coffee, the events, but most of all the people. This is an issue of The District focused on new beginnings and the Portico gives new beginnings to all who step inside her doors.
