RAISING THE BAR

Corporate Responsibility Project Equality Illinois is dedicated to ensuring that every law firm operating in the State of Illinois provides a safe and fair work environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees. This spring, we conducted our seventh annual comprehensive survey of law firms doing business in Illinois to assess firms’ commitment to their LGBT attorneys and staff, as well as the firms’ engagement with the LGBT community at large. The Equality Illinois Law Firm Survey is unique in its exclusive focus on law firms. We believe that lawyers, as defenders of the law, need to be at the forefront of equal work environments for LGBT individuals. This focus also allows our survey to draw fair comparisons between respondents and tailor our survey to the unique needs of law firms operating in the State of Illinois. Although there are national surveys that measure many of the same indices as the Equality Illinois survey, ours necessarily sets a higher bar. Thanks to the hard work of Equality Illinois and many others, Illinois is one of eleven states in which sexual orientation and gender identity are protected classes in the workplace. In addition, the civil union law and other statewide administrative guidelines set a far higher bar in law than can be measured by a national index. This higher baseline puts Illinois employers ahead of the pack, but it also gives them a greater responsibility to push the envelope in securing truly LGBTinclusive policies in the workplace. As such, the Equality Illinois survey measures workplace equality in three categories: employment benefits, workplace diversity initiatives, and community relations. With the information gathered from the 2012 Equality Illinois Law Firm Survey, we have identified the law firms in Illinois that are leading the way to LGBT workplace equality. This year, we are honoring firms in three groups. In the first group are the firms that are Setting the Bar, having received perfect or near perfect scores in all three categories. In the second group are those firms that are Approaching the Bench, receiving perfect or near perfect scores in two of our three categories. In the third group are firms that are Taking a Stand, making positive strides towards LGBT equality in the workplace. Equality Illinois recognizes the outstanding achievements of law firms across the state, and we hope that highlighting these luminaries and their best practices will spur the development of fair LGBT policies at every firm. Equality Illinois will provide the tools for firms in the state to strengthen their LGBT-friendly policies in order to retain top talent and remain competitive. In this brochure, you will find a summary of the results from our 2012 survey, including statistics on law firms’ non-discrimination policies, workplace practices, and outreach to the LGBT community. We have included preliminary recommendations for fostering an LGBT-friendly environment. In addition to this summary, we have published the Law Firm Best Practices Manual with comprehensive policy recommendations which we continue to distribute in firms and practices nationwide. Thank you to all the law firms that participated in the 2012 Equality Illinois Law Firm Survey! RAISING THE BAR

THE PROCESS

This spring, Equality Illinois mailed the 2012 Equality Illinois Law Firm Survey to the 150 largest firms doing business in the state of Illinois. The survey included questions on law firm personnel policies, civil union and same-sex partner benefits, diversity trainings, and engagement with the LGBT community at large, among other practices. We collected samples of the best practices relating to non-discrimination policies and same-sex partner benefits, as well as any other materials related to LGBT community involvement and office culture.

“Equality is not a concept. It’s a necessity.”

Dykema proudly embraces diversity. It’s a vital component of our corporate DNA. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures that all—regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religion or disability—are welcomed and valued. A culture based on dignity and respect enables us, and our clients, to explore issues from a variety of viewpoints, and to learn from one another in ways a less diverse workforce might never discover.

Using the information provided by the responding law firms, Equality Illinois scored the firms based on how welcoming and equitable their policies are to LGBT employees. We applaud the firms leading the way towards LGBT workplace equality, and honor the firms with a strengthening commitment to workplace equality. These firms are being recognized before their colleagues at the annual Lawyers for Diversity Barbeque and throughout the year at our various events.

To learn more about Dykema and its diversity initiatives, we invite you to contact Sherrie Farrell, Diversity Committee Chair, at sfarrell@dykema.com. Inclusion that inspires. Dykema delivers.

Equality is a policy that has long been woven into our culture. We were one of the first large law firms to grant parity in healthcare, leave and other employee benefits for same-sex domestic partners. This was followed by adding gender identity to our non-discrimination policy.

For us, the verdict was in long ago.

To bolster our efforts in raising the bar for equality, in 2010, we launched a Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship initiative for second-year LGBT and minority law students. This year, we began adjusting compensation to offset federal taxes imposed on same-gender partners for health coverage. We are proud to be selected by Equality Illinois as among the top Illinois law firms for leading the way to LGBT equality.
