Univision and Biz2Credit Partner to Expand Access to Capital for Hispanic-Owned Businesses

atinos are starting businesses at more than twice the start-up rate for all U.S. firms, marking an impressive 43 percent growth since 2007. Despite this growth, it can still be particularly difficult for these businesses to secure capital. To address these challenges, Biz2Credit and Univision have launched a dedicated, bilingual small business platform (www.empresitio.com) to empower Latino business owners. Through the platform, Latino business owners will have access to a broad set of lending products as well as a wealth of educational resources including, periodic research reports on the state of Latino businesses and Biz2Credit’s Small Business Lending Index. “We are thrilled to partner with Univision and offer their audience financing to expand their businesses,” said Rohit Arora, CEO of Biz2Credit. “Through our automated online loan application platform – available in both Spanish and English – Biz2Credit streamlines the financing process so that business owners can spend more time running their companies and less time trying to figure out financing.” “This is a very important partnership for us. The community we serve is very entrepreneur-
ial and poised for growth,” said Rick Alessandri, EVP of Enterprise Development, Univision Communications Inc. “This partnership presents a tremendous opportunity for Univision and Biz2Credit to enhance the borrowing experience for our community. Traditionally, the financing landscape has been difficult to navigate but through this new platform our customers will not only find lending options but also learn how to grow their businesses.” This partnership is an extension of the work Univision has been doing to provide Hispanic entrepreneurs with access to the information and tools to succeed. In March, as part of the Company’s Univision Contigo efforts, Univision celebrated Latino entrepreneurship with a month-long effort, which included nationwide events, awareness events, boot camps and enhanced tools. EMPOWERING The Disabled
at Wells Fargo & Co. Written By Linda Irene Rogers

A
former U.S. assistant secretary of the Office of Disability Employment Policy, Kathy Martinez has overcome tremendous obstacles to attain her success. During her tenure in the Labor Department, she helped strengthen federal contractors’ responsibilities to hire, retain and advance qualified people with disabilities, and played a critical role in President Barack Obama’s 2010 executive order directing federal agencies to increase the representation of people with disabilities in their workforces. She also led other key initiatives that increased employment of civilians and veterans with disabilities across public and private sectors. Prior to her work in the Labor Department, Martinez was executive director of the World Institute on Disability; a Berkeley, Calif., organization focused on increasing employment, economic security, and health care for persons with disabilities. Her work included developing a campaign for the 2006 adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. She also collaborated with organizations around the world, including the State Department’s U.S. Agency for International Development, and the International Labour Organization, as well as a number of major corporations, including her eventual employer, Wells Fargo & Co. Martinez is in something of a unique position when it comes to understanding what it’s like to have a disability in the workplace. She was born blind. A graduate of San Francisco State University, Martinez speaks and publishes on a wide array of topics related to disability employment, including the emergence of disability as an essential component of workplace diversity and inclusion, and the importance of expectation in ensuring youth with disabilities grow up with an assumption of work. Martinez grew up in Southern California with five siblings. Her father worked for a variety of defense contractors, while her mother worked as a housekeeper. Along with Martinez, another of her sisters was born blind as well. Determined her daughters would have as normal a childhood as possible, their mother enrolled them in public schools, where Martinez says she realized she was different for the first time. The experience taught her she’d have to negotiate the world differently. Having learned to do so, Martinez has dedicated her career to ensuring other disabled people have every opportunity to realize their full potential. Of her work at
Wells Fargo, Martinez says; “I have been impressed with Wells Fargo’s focus on diversity and inclusion, and specifically its commitment to serve consumers and team members with disabilities. I look forward to expanding those opportunities for people with disabilities to make sure everyone can succeed financially.” Martinez leads Wells Fargo’s People with Disabilities segment focus. She works with the organization’s line of business and channel leaders, in addition to a network of Wells Fargo team members with disabilities. Her duties also include ensuring Well Fargo’s disabled customers are afforded fair opportunities in the financial realm. In this regard, Martinez works with Wells Fargo’s customers, communities, and advocacy groups to expand the company’s capabilities and programs dedicated to serving customers with disabilities. Stephanie Smith, Wells Fargo’s head of Marketing Strategy and Segments says. “Kathy’s extensive experience and knowledge of the needs of people with disabilities helps us continue to deliver on our vision to help all of our customers, communities, and team members succeed financially.” One of her goals in her position at Wells Fargo is to ensure people with disabilities are afforded an opportunity to participate fully, just as she enjoyed at the U.S. Department of Labor. As an employer, Martinez says the Department of Labor reflects the ideals inherent in the policies it puts forward; including helping to strengthen the American workforce through diversity. She says; “When I walked through the doors each morning, I knew my diverse perspectives were valued — in addition to my experiences as a person with a disability, those stemming from my many other identity markers were appreciated as well. After all, my disability is only one part of who I am.” HT

Redefining The
Friendly Skies Oscar Muñoz, United Airlines CEO
I
Written By Lydia Julian
t’s no secret Untied Airlines has encountered quite a bit of turbulence of late. The recent merger with Continental Airlines, as well as a federal investigation associated with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, have subjected the venerable airline to quite a bit of buffeting. In fact, as a result of the investigation, former United CEO and chairman Jeff Smisek stepped down, to be replaced by Oscar Muñoz; making him one of nine Hispanic CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
18
“Muñoz says his key goals are to develop employee engagement, increase customer service, and improve United’s business results.”
Prior to joining United Airlines, Muñoz served as president and chief operating officer of CSX Corporation, another premier transportation company in the railroad industry. Muñoz also served as a director at CSX. During Muñoz’s tenure, CSX was transformed into an industry leader in customer focus, reliability and financial performance. Further, CSX was named one of Institutional Investor’s Most Honored Companies for a decade of excellent financial performance, including increasing its operating income by nearly 600%. Hopefully, Muñoz can bring similar results to United. Prior to joining CSX, Muñoz served in various senior financial and strategic capacities at some of the world’s most recognized consumer brands, including AT&T, The CocaCola Company and Pepsico. He has served on the board of directors for United Continental Holdings since 2010, and served on the board of directors of Continental Airlines since 2004. Muñoz is also active in several industry coalitions and philanthropic and educational organizations including the University of North Florida’s board of trustees and the PAFA advisory board of Vanderbilt University. Muñoz graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and earned a master’s in business administration at Pepperdine University. He has been named one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics” by Hispanic Business magazine. Well-suited for the position from his experience at CSX, Muñoz says he expects to leverage the parallels he sees in government oversight and working with an organized labor force to smooth out America’s largest airline. This will be something of a task, as United has a ways to go toward generating a warm and fuzzy in the hearts of many its passengers.
As one of his first steps, Muñoz launched UnitedAirTime.com to give customers an opportunity to provide direct feedback to the beleaguered airline. According to the site, its primary aim is to create an ongoing conversation with the airline’s customers and employees; allowing them to answer questions and get candid feedback. It also publishes stories about United’s employees, customers and company innovations to keep travelers informed about the strides it is making. In a bold move, the site is open to the general public for comments both positive and—shall we say—those offering insights on opportunities for improvement. Exacerbating the situation, Muñoz must strive to unite a culture still somewhat in disarray after the merger with Continental. Muñoz says his key goals are to develop employee engagement, increase customer service, and improve United’s business results. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Muñoz is quoted as having said United employees have been allowed to become disenchanted, disengaged, and disenfranchised. In many industries, this is the kiss of death, as customers exposed to such attitudes are typically inclined to seek another provider of whatever service it is they came looking for. Airlines are somewhat insulated from this with business travelers, as many so covet the frequent flyer miles they accumulate, they lock themselves into flying an airline regardless of the nature of the encounter. Still, with an ever-worsening experience, loyalty can only be counted on up to a point. United’s 2014 on-time arrival performance slipped by three points to 76 percent in 2014, its mishandled baggage rate increased, and predictably—so did customer complaints. Long story short, Muñoz has a significant slice of work cut out for himself. HT

the big 5
LATINO COMPANIES Compiled by Lyndon Conrad Bell
I
t is common knowledge Latinos comprise the largest ethnic group in the United States. Further, the buying power of the Latino community has grown exponentially, right along with the population. Thus, it’s remarkable to note how many people underestimate the power of Latino businesses. There is a very sizable number of exceptionally large Latino companies generating billion dollar revenue streams numbered among HispanicBusiness. com’s Top 500 Hispanic Businesses. Here are five of the largest in terms of revenues.
BRIGHTSTAR CORPORATION: The world’s largest wireless distributor, BrightStar serves more than 200 cellular carriers, over 40,000 retailers, and more than 15,000 enterprise companies in over 100 countries on six continents around the world. The company generated in excess of $10 billion in revenue in 2014, with a roster of some 9,000 employees. Its core business functions are specialized global wireless distribution and services, in addition to servicing mobile device manufacturers, wireless operators and retailers. Bolivian Marcelo Claure started BrightStar in Miami as a device distribution company targeting Latin America in 1997. Today, BrightStar is ranked among America’s largest private companies.
20
MASTEC: Jorge Mas Canosa, whose son Jose Mas is the current CEO, founded this multinational infrastructure engineering company in 1994. Listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1998, MasTec provides services in the areas of engineering, building, installation, maintenance, and upgrade of energy, utility, and communications infrastructure. This includes electrical utility transmission and distribution, power generation, natural gas and petroleum pipelines, wireless, wireline and satellite communications, wind farms, solar farms and other renewable energy, industrial infrastructure, and water and sewer systems. MasTec became the first Latino-owned company in the United States to generate more than $1 billion in revenues back in 1998. MOLINA HEALTHCARE: Dr. C. David Molina founded the company in 1980, while working as an emergency room physician in Long Beach, Calif. Noting the rising numbers of individuals forced to use the emergency room of the hospital for common illnesses because they had been turned away by doctors who wouldn’t accept Medi-Cal, Dr. Molina established a primary care clinic specifically for the treatment of low-income patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Today ranked among the Fortune 500, Molina Healthcare provides medical services under Medicaid, Sate Children’s Insurance programs, Medicare Advantage plans, and the federal Exchange established with the Affordable Care Act. Molina’s son, Dr. J. Mario Molina, now runs the company.
GREENWAY AUTOMOTIVE GROUP: A consortium of some 32 dealerships owned by Frank Rodriguez, the company started with the establishment of Greenway Ford in Orlando, Fla. in 2000. The Greenway Automotive Group’s 32 domestic automotive dealerships include some of the nation’s top ranked performers in sales, service, customer satisfaction and profitability. These include the Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Kia, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan and Mitsubishi brands in Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas and China.
RELATED GROUP: Established in 1979, Jorge Perez’s Related Group is Florida’s leading real estate developer, and one of the country’s largest real estate conglomerates. Its residential developments reach cross-market sectors and have dramatically altered South Florida’s urban landscape. Since its inception, the Related Group has built, rehabilitated, and managed more than 90,000 condominium and apartment residences. The company has earned international status for its visionary designs and development of luxury condominiums, market-rate rentals, mixed-use centers, and affordable properties – often in emerging neighborhoods, enhancing the lives of all its residents.

Fixing the System President Obama is Taking Action on Immigration
“We are a nation of immigrants, and that means that we’re constantly being replenished with strivers who believe in the American Dream. And it gives us a tremendous advantage over other nations. It makes us entrepreneurial. It continues the promise that here in America, you can make it if you try, regardless of where you come from, regardless of the circumstances of your birth.” —President Obama, November 21, 2014
22
I
t’s clear that fixing our broken immigration system would boost our economy and help all workers by increasing the worker productivity, creating more jobs, improving wages of all workers, and reducing the deficit. After waiting over 500 days for the House to take action on legislative solutions to fix our broken system, the President enacted executive actions to help boost our economy. According to analysis by the President’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), the President’s executive actions on immigration would boost economic output by an estimated 0.4 to 0.9 percent over ten years, corresponding to increases in GDP of $90 billion to $210 billion in 2024. • The President’s actions will grow the economy by increasing the productivity of all American workers. These actions will increase the productivity of American workers, in part by allowing undocumented workers to come out of the shadows and find jobs that better match their skills and potential. This shift of workers across occupations will also allow more native workers to specialize in the tasks best suited to their abilities. These effects are likely to lead to wage increases for all workers — immigrants and natives alike. In addition, by encouraging high-skilled immigration, these actions will boost the rate of innovation and patenting in the American economy, further increasing the productivity of the American workforce. • The President’s actions will increase the size of the American workforce. CEA estimates that the economy will also grow thanks to an expansion of the American labor force by nearly 150,000 people over 10 years as a result of the President’s executive actions. • Average wages for all workers, both U.S.-born and immigrant, will increase. Increases in productivity and innovation caused by the President’s actions will translate into higher wages for all types of workers. CEA estimates that by 2024 annual wages for native workers will rise 0.3 percent, or approximately $170 in today’s dollars. CEA also estimates that the President’s actions would neither increase
nor decrease the likelihood of employment for native workers. • A bigger economy will reduce the deficit. As the economy grows so do tax revenues, requiring the government to borrow less to finance government operations. This reduced borrowing translates into reduced spending on interest payments by the government, thus reducing overall government spending — and shrinking the deficit. CEA’s estimate of the higher economic growth associated with executive action on immigration would translate into reductions in the Federal deficit by $25 billion in 2024. At the same time, the President’s executive actions will expand the country’s tax base by millions of people and billions of dollars. Individuals potentially eligible for deferred action under the President’s executive actions are in the country today — and have been for many years. They provide for their families, just like all American citizens. Many are already in the workforce and contributing federal, state, and local taxes. But roughly two-thirds of them don’t pay taxes today. The President is changing that, ensuring that these individuals have the opportunity to apply for a work authorization and pay taxes. By allowing those eligible for deferred action to work in this country, both workers and employers will be able to come out from the shadows and contribute payroll taxes, just like all American citizens. But these actions are just temporary improvements to our immigration system. Only Congress can make legislative changes that can fix our broken immigration system and boost our economy in a more substantial way. Study after study has shown that common-sense immigration reform will strengthen the economy, spur innovation and increase U.S. trade and exports. Click HERE to see video. HT

Targeted Recruiting
vs Non Targeted Recruiting By Mark Cohen, C.O.O., EVP New Business Development JMR Publishing, Equality Magazines, Equality Jobs
I
n the beginning there were a few huge general job boards, Monster, CareerBuilder, and Hotjobs. They were very important to our industry, as they were instrumental in teaching us all about the “JOB BOARD”. In fact, they showed the HR professional the Internet and the online job board are viable ways to hire. When they began, everybody from a Wal-Mart hourly employee to executives in the C-suite at IBM looked on the same job board. Now, some two decades later, there have been many changes to the marketplace. This is normal; as markets usually begin with a general theme, then migrate to the specific needs of the consumer. Now, the market is segmented and talent is specific, so you have the opportunity to target your messaging to a specific group of people through a targeted job board. The use of a targeted job board has inherent advantages to both ad agencies and employers. You can build your brand within a specific community because your target audience is pre-established. The boards are better at reaching the casual job seeker, because they tend to be where your candidates are looking. And, they are far more cost efficient. A targeted job board also ensures you pay only for

the applicants you get as a result of targeting your postings, as opposed to paying for an entire populace. After all, with a general job board, most of the users are not qualified for your position, nor are they the caliber of candidate you’re seeking. Yes, advertising your opportunities in major newspapers and large job boards can still play an role, however the ability to send a targeted message to a specific talent pool is the best and most economical way to accomplish your goals, attract a diverse slate of candidates for your employment opportunities, and ultimately enhance the diversity of your workforce. By the way, if targeted diversity is not reflected in your recruitment advertising, you could be inadvertently sending the message to diversity jobseekers they are not wanted in your organization. In addition to increasing and diversifying your pool of applicants, targeted diversity recruitment advertising can

Some employers make the mistake of assuming a positive image of their product or service translates into a positive image of their company as employers embracing diversity. With targeted diversity recruitment advertising you send the unequivocal message that diversity is an important part of your organization’s overall brand image. Targeted diversity recruitment advertising can also counter the consequences of negative events in the marketplace, discrimination lawsuits, as well as rumors of individual incidents, by establishing positive perceptions. Targeted Diversity recruitment is one of the hottest topics in corporate America today. The latest census results have firmly established the ethnic make-up of the U.S. is changing at a rate faster than anyone has anticipated. Much of corporate America is already aware of the changing demographics.
Many corporate front-runners established diversity initiatives back in the mid-90s. Nearly two decades later, the bottom-line results have been measured in their women and minority recruitment, retention, and supplier diversity. That said, all niche job boards are not equally effective. When considering posting, look for boards getting their visitors involved, constantly producing fresh material, containing current and real jobs, and promoting potential advertisers. This has been the philosophy at EqualityMagazines.com for more than twenty years, and is readily evident in any of the Targeted Minority Recruitment and Community Resource outlets in its family of diversity Websites and job boards. These include; Veterans Enterprise, Hispanic Today, The Black Perspective, and Women in Business & Industry magazines. HT

The Latina’s Guide to Success in the Workplace ! BY ROSE CASTILLO GUILBAULT AND LOUIS E.V. NEVAER
This career guide is the only one of its kind to focus specifically upon empowering the Latina community to embrace success and build skills for workplace advancement. The authors assert there are five obstacles Latinas confront within their own belief systems: the idea women do not need an education; the assumption the needs of men come first; a belief it is sinful to desire money; the opinion Latinas should not be ambitious; and the mindset stating successful women in the United 3States lose their femininity.
Latino Spin: Public Image and the Whitewashing of Race BY ARLENE DÁVILA
The author illustrates the growing consensus among pundits, advocates, and scholars affirming Latinos are not a social liability. Further, they are moving up, contributing, and in fact are more American than “the Americans.” The book follows the spin through the realm of politics, think tanks, Latino museums, and urban planning to uncover whether they effectively challenge the growing fear over Latinos’ supposedly dreadful effect on the “integrity” of U.S. national identity.

The Power of Latino Leadership: Culture, Inclusion, and Contribution BY JUANA BORDAS
Over 50 million Latinos live in the United States, and it’s estimated one in three members of the US population will be Hispanic by 2050. What does it take to lead such a varied and vibrant people who hail from twentytwo different countries and are a blend of different races? What can leaders of all cultures and ethnicities learn from how Latinos lead? The author offers ten principles illustrative of the inclusive, people-oriented, socially responsible, and lifeaffirming way Latinos have led their communities.
Latinos, Incorporated: The Marketing and Making of a People BY ARLENE DÁVILA
Hollywood and corporate America are taking note of the marketing power of the growing Latino population in the United States. While the influence of Latin culture is gaining momentum in American society as a whole, a similar level of economic parity or political enfranchisement has not accompanied the increasing visibility of Latinos in mainstream culture. In a fascinating discussion of how populations have become reconfigured as market segments, the author shows how market and marketing discourse have become important terrains where Latinos debate their social identities and public standing.
