O

ld tales and rumours in Seychelles relate the stories of pirates burying treasures across the islands, coming ashore

to pristine white beaches to hide their loot and riches. People believe those treasures to be gold coins, precious gems or other exquisite charms, and some travellers spend days looking in hopes of finding fortune. However, Constance Ephelia believes the hidden jewels of Seychelles are far different than the ones stories told, but it starts where the pirates also did, ashore the untouched beauty of the Seychelles shoreline, amongst tropically verdant nature and the dazzling and vibrant beauty of the archipelago. Immerse yourself in the true wealth and treasure the Islands have to offer and experience the splendour of two hidden gems found at the Constance Ephelia. The North Beach, part of the Port Launay Marine Park is a treasure chest guarding thousands of colourful fishes all shimmering under the sun-rays. After crossing through the mangrove forest from the main reception, you will find your way to topaz blue water and white velvet sand. The beautiful horseshoe shaped arc of white sands encompasses the calm and relatively deep waters perfectly, forming a natural harbour with offerings of snorkelling, water sports and diving. surroundings that have been there for centuries and you will want to hear all the secrets nature has kept over the years. Visit the beach bar ‘Kabana’, which is a lively place offering a large choice of classic cocktails and amazing daily tropical slushes. Constance Ephelia’s South Beach known as Anse L’Islette, is a lovely bay with waters so shallow you can see clearly through to the seabed. From your arrival at the main reception, you’ll hear the sounds of the waves, the beach standing strong in front of you, as if it was watching over the peacefulness of the place with Ilet Island, slowly kissed by the water. Relax at the Zee bar and take in the warm breeze, birds chirping and the leaves rustling, it will bring you back to the true sense of things and you will wonder if you could fit some of it in your luggage. With a mission to share its rare property that has kept its innate purity, Constance Ephelia is on a quest to welcome any travellers looking for true wealth. istorical beauties such as La Plaine St André are few and far between especially functioning properties giving you

a glimpse into the era of plantation farming and colonial style architecture. The meticulously restored estate was originally constructed in 1792 by Jean-Francois Jorre de St. Jorre and named after his birthplace in Reunion, the flourishing gardens homed copra kilns as well as cinnamon and patchouli distilleries, many of whose ruins you can find in the surrounding acreage. The plantation is now refashioned into a distillery where the D’offay family create Takamaka rum, harvesting and crushing organic sugar cane sourced from independent cooperative farmers onsite. Visit the distillery for a tour and rum tasting experience and see at first hand the process of rum distilling. The Distillery and Garden Tours followed by a Guided Rum-Tasting usually take place at 11.30am and 1.30pm Monday to Friday at a small fee. CHRISTELLE VERHEYDEN Chef, sommelier & mother 32 33

N

ot many people can say they have had as varied and colourful a career background as Christelle Verhayden.

The single mother first came to Seychelles 10 years ago to work for VIP’s onboard private yachts and a few years later decided to stay, but this is a far cry from her corporate lifestyle beginnings. Born in Belgium and with a bachelors licence in Econometrics, Christelle started a successful lobbying career within the European comission and then moved into new technologies with the likes of IBM and UPC Chello. She was in charge of creating the Chello office in Belgium and subsequently took over the French office also, with around 600 employees under her at the tender age of 28. Verheyden was climbing the corporate ladder comfortably until being diagnosed with cancer, which sparked her decision to take a year out from her busy schedule to heal and recuperate. It was at this time that she made a bucket list of things she wanted to do and achieve and her passion for food and wine came out on top. An autodidactic Gastronomist and Sommelier, Christelle started working as a food designer and rapidly grew her catering company to include clients such as Chanel, Armani, Dior, Rolls Royce, Mercedes and Valentino. She won the title of second best Sommelier in Paris

arisa Archakova is no stranger to the fashion industry, with a hugely successful career as a personal stylist at Harrods

By Appointment Personal Shopping Department. The emerging designer shows wonderful potential in her field of ‘personal fashion designing’. The brand was created with her love for the ocean using the word ‘sea’ as an appendage to her name, highlighting many of her designs which echo the fluid ripples and cascading waves that the sea creates. The designer works from her London based atelier and custom makes all of her pieces for her private clients. Her belief encourages consumers to invest in their wardrobes instead of spending on what she calls ‘fast fashion’ and she hopes this trend will stop the high consumerism in the fashion industry today. Her bespoke designs are hand crafted with most of the fabrics sourced from the Paris Premier Vision Exhibition which she visits frequently as well as fabric boutiques. Her attention to detail and eye for stunning fabrics enhance her magical imagination and many of her garments have special hand made accents, a signature piece being her fabric crafted floral brooches.

Larisa is driven to complement her clients form and palette, whilst reflecting their personalities and needs. The design process can take from weeks to months depending on the client and the choice of colour, teamed with a high-quality fabric which needs to be both flattering and practical. It is with these tools that she manages to materialise her many beautiful pieces. RASART Joachim Hoareau 60 61

C

olourful and cultural RasArt embodies a creole spirit with a Rastafarian vibe channelled through the wonderful creative

talent of Joachim Hoareau. Creativity has always been a part of the artists life and after finishing his artistic studies in art at Seychelles Polytechnic, a career using glass medium beckoned him. The design characteristics and taste of his works are a mix of traditional styles from the company Joachim worked with for over 15 years merged with his unique tropical island visions. Since the passing of the company director Joachim and his wife Angelique have taken over the original body and refashioned it into RasArt, which is based from their home in Bel Air and the only stained glass studio in the Seychelles. Using the highest quality glass imported from America as well as locally recycled glass, the artist makes sure to use every part of the material to give birth to his designs which range from mosaics, lead framed pieces and beautiful organically formed dishes and glasses. Each item is unique and the colour of the stain brings life and vibrancy to each of the pieces.

There are many dying trades in the Seychelles but Joachim is an advocate for training individuals to keep the craft and technique of glass workmanship alive. Currently he is the only individual working within the stained glass medium and hopes that in the future more artists will emerge to create a market expansion, as he believes competition is healthy and will help to elevate the sector. His studio has an eclectic choice of glass creations and there are tastes to suit everyone with a range of sizes and styles. The studio is open 5 days a week 9-5pm with private viewings available upon request. Joachim can also be commissioned for individual pieces and specific visions a client may have. +248 2598552/2507187

iva, the world’s most beautiful boats have been making sailing style and design an art form since 1842. Craftmanship,

unmatchable quality, innovation and artistry have always been the Riva hallmarks. Shipbuilding has been allied to the Riva family name across an incredible three centuries. The most famous from this long line of family shipbuilders is indisputably Carlo Riva, who right up until his death in 2017 was the lifeblood of the Riva family business. Carlo was the design genius behind the ‘Aquarama’. This most iconic of Riva models became emblematic of the ‘la dolce vita’ in the 1950s. Often associated with great artists from the worlds of music and film, Riva owners have included Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot and Sean Connery. Carlo Riva famously gifted HSH Princess Grace of Monaco an Aquarama as a wedding present. Most fitting for a boat Carlo described as being ‘designed with love’.

ECO TOURISM 68 69

ith the highest percentage of its land mass protected in the world, its no wonder that the Seychelles is a

pioneer for Ecotourism. The concept which is about uniting conservation, communities and sustainable travel is an important drive for small islands such as Seychelles, where the fine line between ecotourism and ecoterrorism could mean devastation for its natural infrastructure. Until gaining her independence, Seychelles had been in the throws of a parental battle with the colonisation of the Islands bringing about great change to her regular natural functioning habitat. The main source of income in the 1960’s was the production of copra which meant that large portions of the archipelago were re-fashioned for production purposes; along with the introduction of foreign species such as cats and rats, many natural habitats housing endemic species were destroyed. Some of the islands which were used for these purposes were Alphonse, Bird, Cousin and Denis, all of which have had success in restoring the habitat back to its natural state and ensuring the stability of the environment is upheld.

The invitation of foreign investing in the 1970’s created a focal shift from copra production towards the tourism and fishing industries and authorities were able to create efficient protocols in regards to protecting those assets. Sustainability for these infrastructures has been possible with volunteer programs and conservation initiatives with encouragement for a work union between developers and nature. Many conservation projects are stationed at properties and work alongside one another to educate and protect the surrounding areas. Wise Oceans and Four Seasons Resort Seychelles work together on reef restoration at Petit Anse and the partnership between Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort, Island Development Company (IDC) and Island Conservation Society (ICS) aim to preserve the Islands biodiversity with over 92% of Silhouette Island being designated as protected. Another major part of being sustainable is decreasing the need for additional transportation and importation. Denis Island has been at the forefront of this application with a fully functioning farm, lumbar mill and carpentry workshop. Their farm, which produces the islands poultry, vegetables and dairy is self sustaining and with the abundant source of coconut palms for cattle feed it is also able to supply other local outlets. The lumbar mill and workshop provide

all of the hotels wood flooring and the majority of the furniture, decreasing the need for importation and creating local trade jobs, but it doesn’t stop there, with the help of the Green Islands Foundation, Denis Island has also managed to re-introduce many endangered endemic species back into an environment that is safe and welcoming with continued efforts to monitor the species to better understand and protect them. Other properties who have also taken a more sustainable approach to their environment and produce are Six Senses Zil Payson whose theme of habitat restoration and supporting threatened ecosystems have introduced their water refinery using a reverse osmosis plant to bottle high quality drinking water without the use of plastic bottles. Their chicken farm and organic garden aims to produce a large portion of their dining ingredients with the ultimate goal of being self sustainable, but not all Properties have the luxury of a whole island at their disposal and a few have taken initiatives to create a more sustainable environment when it comes to produce. Raffles Praslin has introduced the use of only locally sourced ingredients to their menu and their head chef has been working on building strong relationships with local farmers to avoid having to use imported items.

he Seychelles archipelago evokes breathtakingly picturesque images of crystal clear aquamarine waters and white

powdery beaches set peacefully against a backdrop of lush green vegetation. Sea turtles graze the underwater seagrass and coral gardens whilst giant tortoises move slowly across some of the uninhabited islands. Traditional fishermen can be seen from the beaches and tourists lazily soak in the tropical sunshine while enjoying breath-taking sunsets. The Seychelles people live by the rhythm of the ocean’s vagaries and benefit from its abundant yields. One hundred and fifteen islands measure a total land mass of 455 square kilometres which is surprising to some perhaps as the land is a very small fraction of the Seychelles’ 1.37 million square kilometre waters that reach from the beaches to more than 200 nautical miles offshore, the so-named Exclusive Economic Zone. Internationally, Seychelles is known as a Small Island Developing State, stretching from the international border with Mauritius and extending past Aldabra, over 99.9% of Seychelles’ territory consists of this magnificent ocean. In actuality, Seychelles could be described as a large, ocean state!

PREVIOUS PAGE: A view to preserve. ABOVE: La Digue Jetty NEXT PAGE: Coral nursery forcoral reef rehabilitation; Artisinal fisherman using traditional fishing techniques.

The symbiotic relationship between islander and ocean is a thing of precious beauty. The ocean is highly valued in Seychelles. Most of the 90,000 inhabitants depend on the ocean: it provides healthy fresh food, attracts tourists from around the world, and is the home for thousands of living creatures, some of which are important for export and international trade. Seychelles is a global biodiversity hotspot and the islands contain more than 400 species on the international Red-List for Endangered and Threatened species. Upscale resorts cradle the pristine coastlines, making it one of the worlds most sought after tropical destinations. The Seychelles has strived to establish itself as a perfect place for diving, yachting, sports fishing and most recently the ecotourism market. The country receives over 50% of its GDP from this ocean-based tourism (58% in 2016) and from commercial tuna fisheries (15%), which is the second pillar of the economy. In Seychelles, as around the world, there are increasing concerns about the health of our oceans. These include concerns about overfishing from industrial and local fisheries, pressures from coastal development, threats from rising sea levels and increasing storms, and warm ocean temperatures that cause
