Islands beauty and charm. In which to showcase the many wonderful talents the Archipelago has to offer, not just on land but also under the sea. BLUE SAFARI 8 9
S
ituated in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Outer Islands of the Seychelles are an unspoiled paradise for nature
lovers, adventurers, divers and fly fishermen alike. Far from the Seychelles mainland, marine life flourishes, and the abundance and biodiversity of life beneath the surface is astonishing. Of the various coral islands and atolls that comprise the Outer Islands, Blue Safari operates from a carefully selected few - the Alphonse Group, Astove Atoll, Cosmoledo Atoll and Desroches Island. Each presents its individual charms, yet all offer a plethora of flora and fauna. Away from fishing pressures and human activity, scuba diving in the remote Outer Islands is unparalleled, and Blue Safari Seychelles offers visitors a chance to see fish that are sadly disappearing from other parts of the world. Encounters are common with the mighty napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish and giant grouper, with the potato grouper being particularly numerous at Astove and Cosmoledo (although at Alphonse you often come face-to-face with a friendly resident grouper named ‘Spud’). In addition, the waters surrounding the Outer Islands are some of the best places to see large schools of fish - on a typical dive expect to be surrounded by humpback
PREVIOUS PAGE: The iconic Potato Grouper is becoming a rare global sighting. At Blue Safari you can get up close and personal to these ocean giants. and bluelined snapper, fusiliers and barracuda. As well as an abundance of fish life, the dive sites themselves boast some of the world’s most impressive reefs. As is typical for oceanic atolls, the majority of dive sites are wall dives and are topped with plateaus that are perfect for shallowing up and are often littered with green and hawksbill turtle. The walls themselves exhibit various overhangs and crevices that set them apart, and all are home to various hard corals, as well as huge gorgonian sea fans and black corals found at many of Alphonse Island’s dive sites. The drop-offs in the East of Alphonse are particularly impressive, and it is here that you can find some of the most popular dive sites for guests and guides alike. Abyss is a firm favourite, and with a drop-off leading to a 30m ledge flanked by a backdrop of gorgonian-covered wall on one side and a coral outcrop on the other, it certainly makes for scenic diving. Napoleon is another popular choice, with an open-water reef forming an oasis of life in stark contrast to the neighboring sandy bottomed seabed. The crevices and coral boulders act as magnets for fish of all kinds and form a truly unique topography. For less experienced divers, Alphonse hosts a training platform in the calm lagoon where introductory and refresher courses
can be carried out, often with one to one instruction with PADI instructors. Furthermore, the shallow nature of the plateau, which tops the precipitous drop-off means that beginners can witness spectacular fish life and underwater scenery without descending more than 10 - 15m. For the more adventurous explorers, diving on Astove and Cosmoledo offers the opportunity to submerge where few others have ventured before. The Astove Coral Lodge is a further two hour flight from Alphonse and the Cosmoledo Eco Camp is a one hour boat ride thereafter and the diving is worth the extra travel. There is an incredible diversity of hard coral spayed across the reef with 100% live cover at many sites and impressive stands of colourful soft corals. This is in stark contrast to the inner islands that have suffered from coral bleaching and crown of thorns invasions. Fortunately the Outer Islands have also avoided too much disturbance from overfishing, therefore fish life is abundant and the fish are big in size. The fish assemblage varies with some species of angelfish and damselfish there simply not seen in the rest of the Seychelles. Aside from diving Astove and Cosmoledo, visitors are immersed in a unique habitat with a terrain of coral cliff coastlines, tall sand dunes
CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Spectacular gorgonian soft corals characterise much of the steep drop offs that SCUBA divers explore on Alphonse. Shallow snorkelling in crystal clear water is a leisurely way for Blue Safari guests to experience the diversity of life found in our coral gardens. and vast mangroves that host an abundance of bird life. Due to the number of breeding bird populations found on Cosmoledo in particular, it is a hotspot for nature lovers and the area is described as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. With enthusiastic guides keen to show you everything Blue Safari Seychelles has to offer, a diving trip in the Outer Islands can be as educational as it is enjoyable. For those so inclined, visitors can learn more about the natural wonders of the atolls through PADI and Project AWARE speciality dive courses, various conservation talks and activities, ranging from nature hikes to turtle patrols. Providing the only PADI 5 star resorts in the Outer Islands and offering numerous land-based activities, Blue Safari provides unforgettable experiences both in the water and on land. the finished beetle was sold with proceeds going to charity. Another interesting project and one of Nigel’s favourites was the opportunity to paint a two foot bear on behalf of a project created by Mr and Mrs Herlitz together with UNICEF with 180 countries taking part. Nigel was selected to represent Seychelles and paint something which represented the islands, of course his trademark fish made an appearance as well as other well known species. The bears toured the world as friends and ambassadors sharing a message of peace and acceptance and were auctioned with the proceeds going to UNICEF and child relief organisations. None would argue that Nigel wasn’t one of the most prominent local artists in Seychelles having showcased his work in many diverse markets. His client list is internationally vast and boasts royalty and celebrities alike. He’s managed to keep his passion for graphic design alive with his own consultancy firm which has been central in the creation of many logos and publicity materials across Seychelles, but of course it’s his famous and stylised depictions of fish which has bought him into the limelight. His colourful and original artworks convey depth, mood and movement in underwater scenes, with an emphasis

programme ‘A Treasure Trail of Taste’ inviting high profile chefs to create gastronomic events inspired by Olivier Levasseur, a famous pirate of the Seychelles waters who was believed to have hidden one of the largest treasures in pirate history. Guest chef Luke Selby who was the winner of National Chef of the Year and the winner of the latest season of ‘Great British Chef’ as well as the Roux Scholarship was joined by his brothers Nathanial and Theo to merge their talents and create a spectacular esculent journey through time. ambiance for which the bar is famed. With its larger area, the new interior boasts more intimate spaces with cleverly positioned clusters of seating adorned with beautiful hand dyed linen cushions, accented with woven rope ottomans. The bar boasts stunning textural sophistication from the authentic ylang-ylang fringed roof to the rough barked coconut uprights felled on the island which contrast upon the smooth edge of the copper bar. Hand blown glass pieces by Henry Dean are complemented by contemporary furniture and weathered wood, combining an eclectic selection of materials. The bar glows as the sun dips below the horizon with the interior sunset tones echoing the natural vista. Deep reds and burnt oranges envelop you, merging the interior of the space to the outdoor magnificence of the sunset.
The food and beverage selection is just as dazzling with North Island’s focus on personalisation. Design your own wood fired pizza or enjoy the fresh catch of seafood making use of the island’s natural sustainable resources. Whatever your tastes desire, the Beach Bar is sure to satisfy it. Uniquely there are no cocktail menus in sight, instead guests are guided by the talented bartenders who use their knowledge and innovation to create tailor made drinks to guests’ palettes. Even the food menu changes on a daily basis with chef recommendations and surprise tapas to complement the cocktails. A firm favourite with guests, the bar is the type of place where you go for lunch, but stay for dinner. Dip in and out of the bar and the beckoning warm sea or relax on the welcoming swinging chairs. Whatever your preference the castaway chic atmosphere with an abundance of open space makes it an easy going escape from the outside world. From high profile designers such as Alessandro dell’Aqua, Antonio Berardi, Gianvito Rossi, to lavish brands Bentley Motors and Riva yachts, they have worked with leading names in the luxury arena. After founding an award-winning London boutique Milletre, and gaining wide spread recognition in the media, the sisters sold their store and created Style Lab, a successful luxury public relations and communications agency with offices in London and Monaco. The Cangiano siblings are charismatic, diligent and humble, as Equator Magazine can testify. I visited Valentina and Silvia at the Arts Club, an exclusive private members club in the heart of Mayfair, London. ENCHANTED SEYCHELLES The story of two properties that are connecting family enterprise with the revival of Seychelles’ architectural heritage. 64 65
J
A Enchanted Island Resort, located in the Ste. Anne National Marine Park, was created to allow its guests a chance to step
back in time and be transported to the Seychelles of almost a century ago. Sunil Shah, the owner and developer of JA Enchanted Island Resort, was inspired by his late father, AJ Shah’s reminiscing of the architecture and ambience of the old romantic Seychelles that was fast disappearing. Determined to capture the authentic feel of the bygone era of the 1930s that his father grew up in, Sunil ensured that the architecture, landscaping, furniture and art were all in harmony with old Creole heritage, allowing visitors to leave the haste of modern life behind when stepping onto the island. The boutique five star island resort, managed by JA Resorts & Hotels, features 10 exclusive villas, each with an outdoor bathroom, private infinityedged pool, a charming gazebo and a walkway to the beach, along with a restaurant and bar, a spa and a library. With an ecological mindset to restrict the footprint and certain that the architecture would have to complement the natural splendour of the island, Sunil and Architect Tony Joseph studied every mature tree and granite rock formation and carefully placed structures around the existing natural features to preserve the terrain, resulting in each villa’s layout being unique. The sensitive handling of the island

t’s so simple that it borders on the absurd. Don’t bring what’s already there. Replace whatever you take. Grow and build just
enough, and let nature flourish wherever else it will. These are just a few of the principles that Denis Private Island abides by on its path toward complete self-reliance, on a tiny speck in the Indian Ocean. If that doesn’t sound easy, the management on Denis would likely agree. But the latest in green technologies combined with a demand for more socially and environmentally

attentive holiday options has allowed Denis to take giant leaps forward in the name of sustainability. Its visitors are happily acquainted to a brand of hospitality that tempers traditional luxury within the island’s means, yet still somehow surpasses expectations. Imported red meat, for instance, can be all but forgotten when fresh fish and poultry, caught (or reared) just metres away from the kitchen, is the far more conscious option, let alone the much tastier one. By reducing imports and constructing an alternative platform for cuisine based on local produce, Denis is redefining farm-to-table eating, previously unthinkable in a country like Seychelles that imports 99 percent of its goods. With only 25 cottages guaranteeing a sense of privacy and
seclusion, and local charm crafted into every facet of the hotel (furniture and flooring are made from the island’s fast-growing casuarina trees), it’s easy to see why in today’s world, the island of Denis makes for a far more luxurious escape than a luxury resort would know what to do with. I was there on a consignment commissioned by Vogue Paris, to document the historical changes in the islands, while still maintaining a focus on fashion.
