when I think of Belliche products. From a start-up course in Texas to a UniSey phytomedicine course, Ingrid Saurer, founder and creator of Belliche has grown her company while remaining committed to local sourcing and production. Her guided journey was a whirlwind of right place, right time and niche opportunities that have shaped and guided her to the extensive range of products she offers discerning consumers in the Seychelles today. Where did the name Belliche come from? Belliche is really a family affair and when I had the initial idea it was to develop a business that could work around my family. I have 3 kids; Lylie, Mischa and Bella which makes Belliche an amalgamation of their names. And now Belliche is like a 4th child! Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts! For art is not a

The artist is an exalted craftsman. In rare moments of inspiration, transcending the consciousness of his will, the grace of heaven may cause his work to blossom into art. But proficiency in a craft is essential to every artist. Therein lays the prime source of creative imagination.’ Walter Gropius* Founder of the Bauhaus School in Weimer

xclusivity, sustainability and a laid-back approach to luxury are the core philosophies woven into each and every aspect
of Denis Private Island’s remarkable resort. These principles are no less evident in the excellent gastronomic fare available at the island’s celebrated restaurant, where “fine-dining” refers to more than just table service: arguably some of the finest produce and freshest ingredients available in the country are grown or reared on-site at the island’s own farm and served in one of the most exceptional settings in Seychelles. The Denis Island team of hand-picked chefs are well-versed in enhancing the natural flavours of island-fresh produce with unexpected combinations that are both visually satiating and tastefully tantalising. The results are frequently transcendent. Not to be overlooked is the bounty of impressive specimens of pelagic and reef fish yielded by the comparatively un-fished waters of Seychelles’ northern islands. This oceanic harvest is celebrated each week at the restaurant’s eagerly anticipated Japanese night, which showcases the resort’s 'sea-to-table' approach with a splendid display of ocean-fresh sushi and sashimi that never fails to delight. As a woman in a position of leadership, she often felt that she had to work harder to prove herself more so than a male manager. Coming from the globally recognized leading financial city of London, Mr Roberts transferred the knowledge that he had acquired from the highly evolved insurance market and harmonised it with local knowledge, creating a perfect balance of flexible insurance options to cater for many individuals and their different demands. Becoming a new emerging insurance company in Seychelles wasn’t without its challenges, but with their strong team and professional approaches, it is no wonder that they are known as the market disruptors amongst their competitors. Falcon Insurance has always sought to offer highly developed cover and service to high net worth individuals while remaining embedded in their local roots, aiming to provide the same quality cover for the local community. THE MYSTERIES OF THE FABULOUS COCO-DE-MER By Glynn Burridge 66 67
I
recall as if it were yesterday my first fateful encounter with that most iconic member of Seychelles’ flora & fauna, the fabulous
coco-de-mer. It was during a burning hot summer on the south coast of Iran when my travelling companion and I had stopped outside of a café in some dusty, mud-caked village to stretch our legs after a long journey in the car. We had just bought a couple of Cokes when we were stopped in our tracks by a dervish, a member of an itinerant sufi religious order, looking for some charity. He strode up to us purposefully wearing the strangest of objects slung about his neck: the hollowed out bowl of what appeared to me to be some kind of hardened gourd, elaborately carved and inlaid in places with what might have been pieces of sea shell. Later, I would recognise it as half of a coco-de-mer nut hollowed out to become a kashgool or dervish’s begging bowl. Fascinated by the ensemble of this bedraggled, Islamic version of John the Baptist and the exquisite bowl he bore - I remember questioning him about it as I fumbled for some loose coins to deposit in it. To this very day, I remember his reply. “This, young sir, is one half of a nut that grows on a mighty tree on the ocean floor.”

MANTA RAY RESEARCH with Blue Safari Seychelles, ICS and the Manta Trust 72 73

onservation is at the heart of Blue Safari Seychelles and a collaboration between Island Conservation Society (ICS)
and the Manta Trust, enables researchers the opportunity to collect data which contributes towards answering basic questions of these beautiful, globally threatened species. Every week guests are invited for a ‘Manta Experience’ and to see the rays first hand. Participants receive a presentation about the project, feeding, ecology and biology of the creatures before heading out on the boat to find the resident population of Reef Manta Rays (Mobula alfredi) present in and around the St Francois lagoon. Their inhouse Marine Biologist looks for clues such as tidal movements, weather and current lines which collect plankton, the food source for these gentle giants, and once the Mantas have been spotted the guests are briefed again on safe interactions and how to collect identification photos. Members of the activities team are on-hand to assist with data collection and in addition to the photos of the ventral markings which are unique to each individual Manta, much like our fingerprints, they also collect data on sex, size, location, behaviour and injuries. The programme whose two main targets are to remove the alien species and rehabilitate the natural flora and fauna have had remarkable success with restoring over 60 hectares of native forest which has welcomed home a number of species, one of which the Seychelles White Eye who at one point had a known population of only 25 birds and now boasts over 150 on North Island alone, which homes the second largest population of the endemic bird. Seychelles has been at the heart of the foundation since it first started almost 20 years ago. With such abundant biodiversity and beauty, Seychelles has naturally been a focus of the foundation’s efforts to conserve our natural world. Starting with whale shark and education projects on Mahé, the SOSF now has its own research centre on D’Arros Island in the Amirantes, which studies everything from corals to the sharks, rays and turtles that call D’Arros and the neighbouring St Joseph Atoll home. The Save Our Seas Foundation D’Arros Research Centre (SOSF-DRC) also hosts educational camps, helping engage local students with the natural wonders on their doorstep. The beauty and marine biodiversity at these islands are astounding. “The waters around St Joseph and D’Arros host some of the most intact marine ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean region,” says world-renowned turtle researcher and SOSF project leader Dr Jeanne Mortimer.
