Perfume

 Bulgari introduces its new eau de parfum Mon Jasmin Noir, the latest revision of its dark and mysterious Jasmin Noir collection. Mon Jasmin Noir is a feminine fragrance that wishes to capture the essence of a young and seductive woman by enhancing the modern and seductive elements of a distinctly floral composition created by Olivier Polge and Sophie Labbe for the prestigious Bulgari house. Mon Jasmin Noir blends top notes of lily of the valley and citrus with a mixture of jasmine essences in its middle notes and base notes of musk, patchouli, cedar and nougat. The fragrance denotes and interprets a feminine essence that conceals a playful and mischievous character in a truly exceptional perfume. The Mon Jasmin Noir line consists of Eau de Parfum in quantities of 75ml, 50ml and 25ml purse spray, plus a bath and shower gel as well as a scintillating body lotion. The perfume comes in an elegant pearly white bottle with a gold cap and black satin ribbon. Bulgari, a now world-renowned Italian jewelry house, began as the small business of Sotirio

Bulgari a descendant of an ancient family of Greek silversmiths. Sotirio moved to Italy in the nineteenth century and opened his first precious silver objects shop in 1884 at the Via Sistina in Rome. Sotirio’s sons, Constantino and Gorgio developed an interest in precious stones, jewels and watches and inaugurated the Bulgari shop in Via Condotti that today remains the flagship store of the house. Over the years and decades, Bulgari has diversified beyond the world of high jewelry and watches into the realms of leather goods, accessories and even hotels and resorts in places like Milan or Bali. The first Bulgari fragrance came out in 1992: Eau Perfumée au Thé Vert and was followed by the creation and development of 10 more fragrances as well as the establishment of Bulgari Parfums, the Bulgari perfume house in Neuchâstel Switzerland. Mon Jasmin Noir is the latest development in the legacy of a prestigious jewelry house, turned parfumeur, turned successful international business in the world of luxury. bulgari.com

Giuliano Mazzouli

LA SIMPLICITTA MADE INTO AN ART FORM

GIULIANO MAZZUOLI is a creative designer and an inventor. Specifically, he is an inventor of beautiful objects that make life more pleasurable because they are invented with intelligence and created with passion. He has the right amount of lack of moderation to help him bring out his visionary capability while, at the same time, keeping his feet on the ground. It’s that sort of touch of genius that never gets to his head because it is always linked to a hand that works and an eye that knows how to care for the details. Mazzuoli knows the important thing is to go on without exaggerating too much. Mazzuoli started his career as a designer, making a quirky little agenda that boasted wavy lines and a very sophisticated printing process. After the agenda books he designed two pen lines. One the lines was inspired by workshop tools and the other by another of his inventions, his famous coffee machine, that he appropriately called Mokina. But what makes Giuliano Mazzuoli a coveted and innovative designer are his watches. The ‘Manometro’ watch is a design object with a stainless steel case. Mazzuoli has succeeded in having become a status symbol based on a word-of-mouth campaign led by celebrities and a list of exclusive retailers. His simple designs could well become design classics of the future. When asked about the particularities of his watch, Giuliano exclaims, “Someone said that there is nothing more difficult to design than simplicity, but one does not design simplicity.

It is encountered like the way I encountered the Manometro.” This instrument, designed without any useless ornaments, has a function, but it’s not only a watch, Manometro is a concept. “Life is air and fluids and a pressure gauge— “manometro” in Italian—measures its pressure, and it also measures time,” he explains. His other watch, the Contagiri is something out of the ordinary. The first thing that most

will notice about this timepiece is that it does not have a crown. In fact, this watch does not require a crown to be wound nor to set the time. Instead, the Contagiri watch has a lever similar to a gearshift by which one can carry out the functions usually accessible through a traditional crown. In the circular aperture, located at 6 o’clock on the dial, the Giuliano Mazzuoli logo marks the position of the gear on either 1 (indicating the position to wind the watch) and 2 (indicating the position to set the time). Its original and rather authentic motor sports inspired design displays the time the same way the RPMs are displayed on a car’s dashboard, with 12 hour markers starting from the bottom left (7 o’clock) to the bottom right (5 o’clock). The contagiri’s retrograde function allows the hour hand to flip back to the left hand side of the dial every twelve hours, making it very easy to read the time of day or night. Created in Italy and made in Switzerland, Giuliano Mazzuoli watches are produced in the best watchmaking workshops. They benefit from an experience and know-how that permits the brand to respond to even the most stringent quality requirements. Giuliano Mazzuoli dedicates a lot of passion to fine-tune the smallest functional and aesthetic details of his watches. “Whomever buys one of my watches,” says Giuliano, “does so not because he wants to be recognized, but for his own pleasure. They share with me the values of simplicity, originality, and ‘Italianess.’”

Instant Glamour NEVER BIG ENOUGH

Day or night, rain or shine, people wear sunglasses everyday with a flamboyant confidence that we would usually expect from veteran starlettes. I agree with these people though, sunglasses can instantly make anyone look much more alluring in a superstar sort of way. Each of the acetate styles on these pages are oversized, so as to grant a touch of Hollywood glamour.

Classic Winter A CLASSIC MASCULINE TAKE ON winter brings out those sartorial staples that have been dominating some of the designer collections this season. Top coats, camel blazers, turtlenecks and cardigans, tweed, boots, as well as goose feather vests undeneath your formal wear, are all sure-fire style elements that will help you look stylish and elegant during the last of the bleak months. WORLD CUP Defending champion, Germany’s Christian Ahlmann, returned to the scene of his 2010/2011 triumph to win the ninth qualifying round of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2011/2012 series at Leipzig, Germany . BY LOUISE PARKES. PHOTOS: KARL-HEINZ FRIELER/FEI.

H

ost-nation competitors filled the top-three places, but both the winner, and third-placed multiple champion Marcus Ehning, had to take a back seat in the aftermath as the spotlight shone brightly on rising star Katrin Eckermann who was pipped for pole position by only the narrowest of margins. The 21 year old from Muenster, who has just emerged at Senior level after a highly-successful career in Young Riders, produced a thrilling and polished performance to take runner-up spot and has put her name firmly on the German radar. She said afterwards that this competition will be her last indoor outing of the season as she has other plans for her lovely grey gelding “Carlson.” But everyone, including her German counterparts, agreed that this self-effacing young lady’s name will feature prominently in future years. A new German jumping star has announced her arrival.

DIDN’T HOLD BACK Course designer, Frank Rothenberger, didn’t hold back on the challenge he set for the 37 starters. Big, bold oxers with back bars that stretched many horses to the limit were the order of the day, and while poles fell all around the arena it was the triple combination at fence four and the double at fence eight, quickly followed by a massive oxer at nine, that took the heaviest toll. The latter line proved tricky as, having opened horses up over a series of oxers, Rothenberger asked for maximum control over the double of tall verticals which had a tight two-stride distance inside before pushing to the next. It was here that Frenchman Olivier Guillon’s round came, literally, unstuck when the 13 year old “Lord de Theize” appeared to catch the falling top pole at the second element of the double between his front legs and pitched forward, firing his rider from the saddle. Three others decided to retire, but 13 jumped clear to go into the jump-off against the clock. There were gasps of disbelief however when reigning FEI European Champion and newly-crowned No 1 rider on the Rolex Rankings, Rolf-Goran Bengtsson, didn’t join them after picking up an uncharacteristic single time fault with his 2008 Olympic silver medal winning

AHLMANN POINTED OUT THAT HE WAS NOT AT ALL SURPRISED AT ECKERMANN’S SUCCESS. “KATRIN IS A VERY STRONG RIDER. I ALWAYS KNEW THAT SHE COULD COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.” partner, “Ninja la Silla.” The course indeed demanded a consistent rate of speed, and somehow the Swedish rider, who has hardly put a foot wrong in recent months, had simply miscalculated that in an otherwise sublime roun.

FASCINATING TEST The jump-off track was another fascinating test, with temperament playing a big role as obedience and rideability would be key to success. Sweden’s Henrik von Eckerman, who had produced a masterful opening effort with Hans Gunther Winkler’s elegant “Allerdings,” set the pace with a clear run in 43.02 seconds and it always looked good enough for a strong finishing spot. With seven of the 15 German starters through to the timed round, it was Florian Meyer zu Hartum who was next to go with “Heidegirl Wichenstein CH,” but three fences on the floor put paid to their chances and then Eckermann entered the arena. Her father, Karl, bought the grey gelding “Carlson” as a yearling, and Katrin has competed the horse throughout his career. Their absolute belief in each other was abundantly evident as the horse and rider attacked the course with courage and conviction, the wide Rolex oxer three fences

from home followed by a sharp turn to the penultimate vertical before the long gallop down to the final vertical and a racing finish that broke the beam in 40.77 seconds to reset the parameters. Two horses later however, Ahlmann squeezed ahead when the horse with which he took the 2010/2011 Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping title at the same venue last April took a slightly tighter line to the third-last to stop the clock on 40.66 seconds. And that would be as quick as it could get. Angelica Augustsson’s speedy mare, “Mic Mac du Tillard,” ducked out at the second fence during the Swedish rider’s tour of the track, but Marcus Ehning’s clear with “Sabrina” in 40.86 seconds would be good enough for third. Ireland’s Billy Twomey steered the ever-reliable “Tinka’s Serenade” into fourth when faultfree in 41.73 seconds but the home crowd were disappointed when their favorite, Ludger Beerbaum who was last to go, brought “Gotha" home in the leisurely time of 52.24 seconds after hitting the triple bar early on the course. There were plenty of smiling German faces in the aftermath however.

UNDERSTATEMENT “I like it here in Leipzig!” said Ahlmann in something of an understatement. His track record at the venue is a particularly pleasing one, and his performances throughout the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final last year were exemplary. It was Eckermann who stole the post-competition limelight however, and Ahlmann pointed out that he was not at all surprised at her success. For Eckermann it was a very special afternoon indeed. She works for former German jumping star Hendrik Snoek and is trained by former German Chef d’Equipe Kurt Gravemeier. She already has a career-record that would be the envy of many. Last year she finished second to Ludger Beerbaum in the battle for the prestigious title of German Rider of the Year, and she followed the Individual silver and team gold medal won at the Young Rider European Championships in 2010 with Individual bronze last summer. She has developed a powerful relationship with the 11 year old Carlson during their time together. She now has her sights set on a strong outdoor season.

Mysterious moments The Millenary 4101 asserts itself as the perfect expression of Audemars Piguet. This model with its oval calibre exercises a persistent fascination testifying to the fact that the Manufacture in Le Brassus has once again superseded existing design codes and defied the laws of technology in order to master and even transcend these technical constraints.

An Official Watch of Formula 1™, the Hublot F1™ King Power Ceramic is the fruit of a close and ongoing collaboration between the teams of Formula One and Hublot. Many features of its design are visibly inspired by the world of Formula 1, combining the finest know-how and manufacturing processes at the cutting edge of research and use of hi-tech materials. hublot.com

The Cosmograph Daytona by Rolex was designed as the ultimate timing tool for drivers in endurance races. While the central sweep seconds hand allows an accurate reading of 1/8 second, the two counters at 9 and 3 o’clock respectively measure time in hour and minute increments, allowing the driver to map his course times accurately and determine how he must drive in order to achieve victory. rolex.com

Ski Gear SKI SEASON HAS BEGUN. Those of us who had the opportunity to go skiing to places such as Vail, got to see first hand what global warming is doing to our climate: there wasn’t much snow anywhere to be found! However, the surprise didn’t end there, because there was a lack of snow only thirty percent of the mountain was open—meaning that all those thousands of people who usually spread around a bunch of mountains ended up skiing together in the same spot. This is why we have decided to showcase some of the latest in protective ski gear, so you do not end up visiting the hospital when falling in snowless patches. This ski season you might encounter a variety of rough terrain conditions such as rocks, all sorts of shrubs, icy patches and crowds of people, making it virtually impossible to keep safe without wearing a helmet. Wearing a helmet might not seem exactly hot; this is why I got my hands on this bamboo helmet by Bogner. This will become your favorite ski item and will change the way you think about safety on the slopes. This helmet has a variety of advantages starting with its adjustability to all sizes, ventilation at the top that can be opened or closed depending on the weather, detachable ear paths, and best of all, it’s so light that you will forget that you are even wearing a helmet. As we mentioned in a previous issue, ski boots are worth spending a lot of money on, since they are essential to staying comfortable at all times and having full control over all of your leg movements with your skis. These bright orange Fulltilt boots are light and easy to maneuver in, and needless to say, add a lot of style to your ski outfit. Visibility in the mountain changes drastically during the day making it difficult to decide what type of goggles to wear. We need a light pair of goggles that allow us to have a clear visibility of everything in front of us. This Poc goggles have the lens on the outside of the frame to grant you with a wider field view, while the PC cylinders provide you with the best optical quality. People usually don’t give much thought to gloves and purchase them based on their color preferences. BAD idea!!! If you simply buy the first gloves that you stumble upon, your fingers will suffer the consequences of your decision and will end up as a bunch of little numbed ice sticks. You don’t have to worry anymore, though. We found out that these Race Tec 12 gloves, used by many professional skiers have adequate protection inside and out, keeping your hands safe from any unforeseen event in the mountains.

Fur Coats

Photos: Hugo Boss, Dennis Basso, Emilio Pucci, and Roberto Cavalli.

SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST ONE WAY TO KEEP WARM

IT’S ABOUT TIME TO TAKE out those fur coats you have stored in your closet, or make a call to have them taken from the special freezers where they rest during the hot months, in the purest New York style. Or even better, it’s time to buy a new coat! We know that wearing furs can stir up controversy in certain places or social circles, but that doesn’t prevent the fur business from growing. People still want to feel and wear this luxurious garment: it’s not only a piece of cloth but a way of life. To tell the difference in quality between several kinds of coats, it is important to understand first the differences between natural and synthetic furs. To begin with, “fur” is a loose term applied to a wide range of garments or coats that may contain a mixture of synthetic materials, and various animal products. Many women love to enjoy the feeling of real pelt, while others prefer synthetic products that set off their fashion style. The most popular animals used for coat making are fox, muskrat, rab-

bit, mink, chinchilla, beaver and, of course, luxurious sable, fit for a queen. Faux fur coats can look and feel as real as the others, but at a fraction of the cost. However, synthetic products often lack some of the characteristics of real mink, such as skin growth pattern, agreeable texture and, more importantly, their characteristic shiny hair. Other differences between mink and faux furs are a little bit subtler, that are not perceptible to the naked eye. One that can be noticed only by the experts is the seam pattern inside the coats. This is because coats are made of small fur strips that are sewn diagonally to form long and narrow bands. Mink coats contain thousands of little seams hidden by the maker of these garments. We hope that these tips can help you buy an amazing fur coat that will leave everyone speechless. Remember this one simple rule: little girls wear coats—real women wear furs!

“I’m lucky enough to have clIents that are expectIng surprIses, expectIng all the tIme new models.”

What Would you say that makes your job exiting? First of all, it is the fact that I don’t go into volume. This allows me to escape from commercial aspects. When you go into volume you must go into a lot of compromises in your creation, because you tend to work with the mass. I’m lucky enough to have clients that are expecting surprises, expecting all the time new models. Besides, when you have a limited volume you can afford to develop extraordinary products, because at the end you know your clients will buy the pieces and enjoy the pieces. That is one of the very interesting aspects of the high-end market, that is to say, you really have no limits: the more you open up to the world the more fields of development you have! We are successful, but not because we follow what the market dictates, but the other way round.

tell us a little about nadal’s collaboration in creating the rm 035

Founder of Richard Mille

Richard Mille is founder and CEO of the eponymous Richard Mille brand. He began his succesful executive career in Mauboussin, only to later start his own company in 2001. Equ Lifestyle held a lively chat with the man behind one of the most innovative watchmaking firms of the moment.

What is your philosophy of life? To do what I like. When I was young my mother was always telling life would be difficult for be because I only do the things I like. Work is not a problem for me, but I like to work with the people I love. When I launched the brand, I refused to work with people I didn’t like, even when they offered me fantastic distribution possibilities, etc. I’m lucky enough to work with the people I like at the factory, subcontractors and distribution, its true we have a very deep friendship which is in the world of today something a little bit nuts.

What is then your favorite occupation? I have plenty of occupations and many hobbies. I can work on my garden, I love to take care of my cars, I love to work, I love to take care of my children, I have seven children... So, yes, everything that I do is a pleasure... including sex, of course.

Richard Mille

Originally, Nadal didn’t want to hear anything about watches. He loves watches, but he didn’t want to wear a watch during his matches. So I had two objectives: first, to develop a proper product for him, and second, to have Nadal wear this product during his matches. We had to design a timepiece with three characteristics: it had to be a very light watch, very comfortable watch under any condition, and it had to be extremely resistant to shocks. I love to put my products in danger— it’s one part of my legitimacy—so Nadal ended up breaking five or six prototypes; but if I had not done it this way, it would have been impossible for me to reach this level of excellence.

Solo Ski Machine

The mosT amazing personal watercraft on the face of the planet is waiting for you. Say goodbye to no-show drivers for good. Now you have the destiny to go it alone. For years, self-service water skiing and wake boarding had been only a dream. The desire for the power and control to be the driver, spotter and skier is now a reality. Solo is your own personal ski machine. Always ready whenever you are. With little practice, driving the Solo becomes second nature. Easy push buttons in the patented tow handle allow you complete control of the craft simply by moving your thumbs. Every function from turning, acceleration, stopping, horn and kill are quick and intuitive movements. Whether you’re a champion slalom skier or a beginning wakeboarder, Solo will definitely put a smile on your face. From family fun on inner tubes, to barefooting for your friends, this will be the most fun you’ve had on the water in years. And Solo attracts a crowd. Don’t be surprised if you get a lot of second glances, or the neighbors suddenly become your best friends. Solo was developed following decades of research and engineering to bring you the safest, most

high performance ski machine possible. The gutsy 70 HP Jet Pump Axial Flow engine can tear up the water like no other. Speed, torque and EPA come together in an engine quieter than most conventional two stroke engines. It’s so powerful and reliable you could close your eyes and imagine there’s a tournament boat right in front of you. It’s truly amazing. As if all this wasn’t enough, the 2012 model has gone wireless so that you can now use your favorite off-the-shelf handle and tow rope. A “clamshell” with the controls clamps on to the center of your favorite handle and communicates via Bluetooth to a small device the size of a matchbook that’s embedded in your custom Solo ski vest which, in turn, communicates to the boat wirelessly. The ski vest pod also features GPS and remote retrieval; if you fall, the boat will track back to you at an idle speed. When it

senses a distance between you and the bow of the boat of 10 inches, the engine shuts down and the boat will drift right up to you. Solo 2012 also comes equipped with a ski/wakeboard rack. Cut through virgin water at 6 a.m. anytime, who’s stopping you? Solo is the hottest new innovation in personal watercraft to come along in years. Solo sets a whole new standard for fun on the water. It’s the go anywhere –go anytime personal watercraft of the future, here today. Give this little hummer a try!

Divine Dining

Despite its Distance from the nearest ocean, Vail, Colorado, has just become the perfect place to find some of the best sushi around. Super-chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa’s newest creation, Matsuhisa Vail, is the 29th restaurant in his sushi empire. The chef proprietor opened his first Matsuhisa restaurant in Southern California in 1987, introducing Americans to his brand of Japanese cuisine, heavily influenced by years spent in Peru and Argentina. The fusion proved a success and, in 1994, the chef opened another restaurant, Nobu, in New York City with business partner and actor Robert DeNiro. Now Nobus and Matsuhisas dot the globe, including a location in Beverly Hills, Aspen, Mykonos and Athens, Greece, just to name a few. Kitchen Manager Sean Baek makes Nobu’s vision come to life daily at the Vail location. “There’s no

limit to our sky,” Baek says with conviction. “With the ingredients in our kitchen we can come up with anything. We want to not only give guests a Nobu experience, but an even better, refocused one.” An experienced sushi chef and veteran of both the Aspen Matsuhisa and the three-star French restaurant Joel Rubuchon in Las Vegas, Baek’s influences come more from French cuisine and his own Korean heritage. In fact, his mentor was the first Korean Iron Chef, so look for touches such as Korean root vegetables and mushrooms in his cooking. “One thing I absolutely want to do is show people in this town something new, some different food,” he says enthusiastically. The extensive menu includes everything from hot and cold appetizers to salads, soups and sashimi to noodle dishes, rolled sushi, an extensive selection of tempura and a long list of specialties and full-

fledged entrées. A Nobu-inspired dining experience wouldn’t be complete without the well-known miso black cod, which is marinated in miso for 48 hours before being broiled. The servers at Matsuhisa recommend that if you plan to make sushi part of your meal, you should order it as a final course. The pure, delicate flavors of Maguro, Saba, and a California roll are just the rest your palate will need. Desserts include mochi ice cream, a coconut banana spring roll, a fruit plate, and a Bento Box dessert that includes a hot chocolate soufflé with two sauces and a side of green-tea ice cream. You can try delicious cold sakes, but champagne is also another great option to pair with your dinner. Matsuhisa is located in the lobby of the Solaris Residences, near the new high-tech bowling alleys of Bõl Vail and the digital movie screens of Cinebistro.

New Blue Label

JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL, in collaboration with Porsche Design Studio, proudly present three collectible pieces that wish to portray the stylish way in which whisky is enjoyed in the twenty-first century: this is German high design working along side the pinnacle of the British distillery tradition. Johnathan Driver, Johnnie Walker Blue Label worldwide ambassador and Christian Schwamkrug, design director and adjoined general director of Porsche Design Studio, are the creative minds behind the project. How did this collaboration come about? Schwamkrug says, “Johnnie Walker had the initiative to approach Porsche Design, taking in consideration its forty year design experience, to work with them. Johnnie Walker and Porsche Design Studio share the same values in terms of heritage, style and excellence.” Johnnie Walker

Blue Label is about to turn two hundred years old in 2020, for which their iconic square bottle with slanted label has been re-designed, Driver tells us: “Let’s not forget that we are living in the twenty-first century, in a world that is changing fast. We came to realize that we had to change our classic design.” That image of the British gentleman drinking blue label in the solitude of his private library, no longer represents the people who enjoy Blue Label nowadays. It’s here where the three collectible pieces come into the picture and are available for purchase. The Limited Edition Cube is an aluminum and blue leather rectangle with a diagonal opening that on its inside holds a bottle of Blue Label, metal ice tweezers, four glasses and an ice bucket. The Chiller can carry a bottle of Blue Label and its cap can also be used as an ice bucket. The Private VIP Bar is a 2.2 m hydraulic contraption, which opens automatically to reveal various Blue label bottles, glasses, ice bucket and other necessary tools. Its official launch is scheduled for July this year.

The Nations Cup:

Competition with Representation The $75,000 FEI Nations Cup: In a two round competition, teams of four riders compete in ‘four lines’—first rider for each team, second rider and so on through the fourth rider. The round from each team that accumulates the highest number of faults is ‘dropped’ and not added to the total score. In this particular class, teams return in reverse order—highest to lowest number of faults— in ‘three lines’, so only three riders from each team return and no score is dropped in the second round. The team with the lowest total faults earns the Nations Cup victory.

S

how jumping is often an individual sport. The contender that is fastest with the least number of faults wins. Not a simple feat, a grand prix often involves two rounds of strategically placed technical challenges that both horse and rider must mentally and physically clear. It is that duo doing their best on that day. Competing in a Nations Cup adds several interesting layers to this typical show jumping scenario. Horse and rider duos compete on a team of four, not individually. The teams are carefully picked by a chef d’equipe (team captain). In FEI Nations Cups this chosen group represents their country. Now apply the above pressure of technical challenges, add riding on behalf of your team as well as your country, plus thousands of cheering patriotic spectators and the result is a highly charged competition.

NATIONS CUP BRINGS THE WORLD TO WELLINGTON Bottom: Nation Cup teams stand for their countries, WEF 2011.

On Friday, March 2nd, 2012, G&C Farm presents the $75,000 FEI Nations Cup at the world-renowned FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). The only competition of its kind in the United States, horses and riders from all over the world compete in this unique format for one evening. An audience made up of a host of different nationalities wave flags, dress up and go crazy for their country.

We asked four riders from around the world about their experiences in a competition of this kind – Olympic Gold Medalist Beezie Madden of the United States, Jennifer Crooks who rides for Ireland, Paulo Santana from Brazil and Australian Harley Brown. The competitors we spoke with all jumped at the opportunity to compete in a Nations Cup and represent their country. As Beezie Madden expressed, “Riding on the Nations Cup definitely brings out a sense of pride. Just being selected for the team is an honor. Then going out there with the flag on the saddle pad and hopefully hearing the National Anthem when you win brings out the chills.” The American team felt those very chills at the 2011 FEI Nations Cup. Jennifer Crooks was on the Irish Team at WEF last year and then went on to Europe to compete in six more Nations Cups last year. “Riding for your country is a huge honor and very different than riding as an individual in a grand prix. You get close to your team – you watch, you’re very involved – everyone supports each other. It’s very exciting.” The Irish Team with Crooks on board tasted victory at the Nations Cup in Copenhagen last year. Many of the world’s top riders traveled to WEF with their eyes on the 2012 Olympics in London. This FEI Nations Cup is one

opportunity for chefs d’equipe to see how a team works together, how a rider performs under this kind of pressure. It’s an ideal time to consider who may be an Olympic candidate. Paulo Santana explained the importance for Brazil. “Especially this year, our federation is really focused on bringing a competitive team to the Olympics under the supervision of Jean Maurice Bonneau, former coach of the French Team. He is trying all kinds of team formations during the process before the games. I am proud to be chosen to be part of the team in this Nations Cup competition.” Last year’s class was the first time Australia had fielded a team in the Nations Cup at WEF. Harley Brown, who now lives and competes on the West Coast, showed the East Coast and Australia what his horse Cassiato can do. “It is fabulous to ride for your country. That was my Nations Cup debut, and I’ll be back this year. Chef Stephen Lamb is looking to build a good team. We head to Europe for our trials shortly after WEF is over.”

Brown sees the ups and downs. “Last year was really cool because one of the boys on the team was a friend from childhood that I hadn’t seen in awhile. This year the riders are all from the same area in Australia and we all grew up together. That said, there is definitely a lot of team pressure. You don’t want three fellow members and a chef angry at you – you want to do well and not be the weak link.” Santana and Madden both reiterated the intensity of the pressure and the potential reward. “It certainly makes your job as a rider a truly important task because you carry with you the thought that if you don’t do your job you will let your people down and no one wants that. It is a lot of pressure, but on the other hand makes the flavor of the victory that much sweeter,” explains Santana. And Madden states, “Representing your country is an honor that comes with a lot of pressure. It is nerve wracking while it is happening, and everyone is always glad when it’s over. But it can be the most satisfying experience you will ever have.”

THE PRESSURE Madden learned early on how things can go. “My first chance to be on a Nations Cup was in 1987 at the Spruce Meadows Masters. I was very excited to be on the team and George Morris was the chef d’equipe. I had a fall in the schooling area just before I was supposed to be in the ring for the first round, so I ended up in a big rush to get to the in-gate. Everyone, including George, was yelling at me to get up to the gate. Once in the ring I proceeded to have the second fence of an already intimidating course down. I thought I was in for a basketball score, but finished with four faults. I went clear in the second round and the team won! So although it got off to a very shaky start, my first experience was a good one.” Experiencing both the highs and the lows of a Nations Cup class, Crooks recalls, “When you have a clean ride everyone is so excited. Winning is a thrill. Then when you have a bad day - everyone has bad days and we all get that – you feel horrible. Even though we had a great show, I was so upset with my mistake to the triple in Copenhagen. I had my only two rails there and it was the last jump. I can still picture the mistake and how I could’ve avoided it. I have to say that no matter what the outcome, the team was super supportive.”

HOME IS WHERE YOU MAKE IT Interestingly every individual we interviewed is based in the United States. Madden grew up on the east coast and had equestrian aspirations from a young age. She and her husband John own a farm in Cazenovia, New York. The Crooks, Jennifer and her husband Mike, own Stella Farms in Sandpoint, Idaho. Along with their equestrian pursuits, they have twelve children. Two grown and off on their own, the remaining clan, of which seven are adopted, range in age from 3-18. Brown and his wife Olivia have two young children and live in southern California. After a decade in the states, Brown has grown to love California. Santana and his wife Jennifer have two young children. They are based in Wellington and Paulo couldn’t be happier. “I really enjoy being here and having the chance to practice with and compete against the best in the world. Wellington is the center of show jumping. Being based here is a great opportunity for me, my family and my foreign clients.”

is a phenomenal horseman and very involved. He watched me at Spruce Meadows in the 1.6m and again at WEF last year and then I was asked to join the team. I planned my year around the Nations Cups and it was wonderful. Hickstead was my favorite show. I jumped two clean rounds there. It was the best feeling ever.” Madden said without question that “representing my country was definitely part of the reason I wanted to be a top rider. When I grew up it was probably the dream of every young rider.” After the United States had a very disappointing showing at the 2010 Nations Cup competition portion of the WEG, followed by inconsistent performances in the FEI Nations Cup Top League last summer, Madden and many other Americans are taking a step back to look at the role of patriotism in our sport. It seems abundantly clear that this country needs to rethink the importance of being a part of a team. Madden continued, “The Nations Cup is very important for our sport for national pride, but more importantly, for keeping our sport in the Olympic Games. Without the team competition, we might be in danger of getting our sport dropped from the Olympics. That would be a disaster for our sport. I sincerely hope that we can realign everyone’s dream again for the future of our sport and the good of our country.” In this Olympic year we wish every Nation the very best in all competition with representation.

"RepResenting my countRy was definitely paRt of the Reason i wanted to be a top RideR." beezie madden

DREAMS COME TRUE Crooks had a dream. “When I started to ride at the grand prix level about ten years ago – I decided I wanted to ride for Ireland. I had posters of Eddie Macken on the wall, I was an Irish horse history buff, and I was committed. Of course it takes a great horse to compete at this level. Now that I have SF Uryadi, I am on the radar. Our chef, Robert Splaine,

Steinway & Lyngdorf

LETS BE HONEST ABOUT THIS, every man and boy loves to have killer speakers for great music or action packed movies. However, we hope you understand that aesthetics and functionality are in no feud, and that you should consider both when it comes to buying good speakers and

sound systems. Before you go out and buy a stereo with neon lights and hardware pieces that seem to have come out of Optimus Prime, we would like you to consider a sounder option: the Steinway & Lyngdorf C series. No kids allowed. This is adult shopping at its best.

In a sober black lacquer and gold accents finish, the C series will remind you of that black and gold watch you have recently bought. In reality its finish is reminiscent of the Steinway & Sons pianos. But the finish can be customized in a great and exquisite range of classic and personalized features with the above mentioned accents in gold or chrome. Fusing superior craftsmanship with state of the art technology and a superb design, the C series shares de same emblematic linage as the Model D sound system and retains those landmark features of Steinway & Lyngdorf products, such as the Fully Digital Amplification and Room Perfect correction system. The C series comprises two dipole speakers, a pair of Boundary Woofers a head unit and the same round remote control found in the D Model. The C series has a vivid, captivating and intimate sound that is excellent for any type of music. It is compatible with a Surround Sound processor—by adding up extra Steinway & Lyngdorf speakers and amplifiers—for its Home Theater modality. Now you are ready to listen to Jimmy Hendrix in a proper manner or organize that Spaghetti Western marathon you have been planning for months! steinwaylyngdorf.com

urban bicycle

Created as a solution to the congested ways of urban living, the YikeBike provides an aesthetically pleasing and fun mode of transportation for urban city dwellers. Similar in purpose as a Segway, but designed in a totally different manner, the YikeBike is touted as the “cooler” way to get around. Developed by a group of entrepreneurs, engineers and dreamers, they all wanted to create something that would provide the simplest way to get around, with the smallest wheel, that would provide a stable, safe and comfortable ride, as well as being small enough to travel anywhere in a populated city. The result is the YikeBike, a modern take on the old school unicycle, which utilizes state-of-the-art technology, industrial design and a new and unique way of getting around. While it may look as if it’s a children’s toy, the YikeBike is anything but. You sit on it as you would a chair, and place your feet on pedals that sit on each side of the 20-inch large front wheel. Its handlebars are to your sides and also act as handbrakes (stopping power comes by electric anti-skid and regenerative brakes that will yield you and the YikeBike on nearly any surface). While it may look uncomfortable at first, it’s only natural that you’d put your hands down to your sides when sitting in an upright position that the YikeBike requires in order to safely and properly ride one.

With its one-kilowatt electric motor that emits zero emissions, you’ll also leave no carbon footprint, making it a great alternative to a motorcycle or car. But don’t expect to be a speed demon on a YikeBike because it tops out at 14.3 mph, just enough speed to get you cruising the city. Its LiFEPO4 rechargeable battery allows for a 6.2-mile range and has a 120-minute recharge time with a standard charger, but an optional fast charger drops the time to only 50 minutes. However, if you add another battery pack, you can get 12.4 miles and two additional battery packs ups the range to 18.6 miles on a single charge. An advanced LED light system is always on so that you can be seen at all times, day and night. Just like any other bike, turning lights, brake lights, rear lights, turning signals and hazard lights are standard features on the YikeBike. Originally created out of carbon fiber components back when it was unveiled in 2010, it weighed only 22 pounds, which made it the lightest electric bike in the planet. But because it had a carbon fiber frame, the price tag made it run about $4,000. As a way to make it available to the masses, a new, more affordable option is now available. The YikeBike Fusion may be

lower priced, but design and quality have not been comprised. Whether you like the lighter carbon fiber option or want the more budget-friendly Fusion, there are also a multitude of accessories and options, such as a variety of colors to choose from (red, silver, white, green and blue thus far); a specifically designed storage bag; extender and replacement batteries; and fast chargers. yikebike.com

2003 in the legendary Brazilian Court hotel, which had been entirely renovated and transformed into condominium suites that featured luxury hotel services. “When I discovered The Brazilian Court Hotel in Palm Beach I knew it would be a charming, sunny setting for a wonderful southern version of Café Boulud,” explains Chef-Owner Daniel Boulud. The Brazilian Court, a Palm Beach landmark, possessing 1920’s Spanish style architecture and beautifully landscaped interior courtyards, is in the heart of Palm Beach and just a few steps away from the famed Worth Avenue. This distinctive setting and its sophisticated international clientele merited a restaurant with world-class reputation, such as New York’s Café Boulud. Now celebrating its ninth anniversary, Café Boulud Palm Beach has garnered much local and national acclaim, including Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence,” four stars in the Forbes Mobil Travel Guide, Best Overall Restaurant and Most Romantic meal awards from Palm Beacher Magazine, among others. Café Boulud’s menu parallels that of its sister restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and reflects the chef’s four culinary muses: La Tradition, classic French cuisine; La Saison cooking in harmony with the sea-

sons; Le Potager named for the French vegetable garden, and Le Voyage, Daniel Boulud’s interpretation of various world cuisines. At lunchtime, the Palm Beach landscape lends itself to the enjoyment of a more casual menu: savor sandwiches, classic Bistro fare and a delectable Sunday brunch. On the weekends, islanders frequent the restaurant to enjoy luscious cocktails and the live entertainment that spills out into the garden courtyards in the evenings, making the terrace at Café Boulud one of the hottest spots in town. In regards to the dessert menu, Daniel and Pastry Chef Arnaud Chavigny worked together to create dishes that harmoniously

adhere to the menu’s four muses. Traditional selections re-visited from a contemporary point of view might include classic favorites such as tart tatin or île flottante. Seasonal desserts focus on lighter offerings inspired by the orchard’s bounty, such as fragrant sorbets, poached fruits and fruit tarts. This little nook in the heart of Palm Beach has patiently earned its place under the sun. Café Boulud is certainly a gem of a restaurant, one you should not forget to visit next time you find yourself in Palm Beach. 301 Australian Avenue Palm Beach, FL 33480 danielnyc.com

THE SENSOGLOVE teaches you the right way to hold the club. SensoGlove is the first and only golf glove with built-in sensors that constantly reads the pressure of your grip. Practicing with SensoGlove will teach you the correct grip pressure for a smooth, consistent swing that delivers greater distance, enhanced precision and lower scores! Maintaining a lighter grip pressure is regularly discussed by all the professional golfers and teaching pros. The trouble is it’s difficult to learn exactly what they mean by a light grip pressure and most golfers end up swinging with a death grip. Every golfer wants to hit the ball far and the natural instinct is to swing harder and faster. But trying to swing with more power causes a death grip, creating tension in the hands, wrists, arms and shoulders. The result is a less than smooth swing and, even worse, tightened muscles. Tight muscles result in slower—not faster—club head speed. SensoGlove’s built-in digital computer actively monitors your grip with sensors placed strategically throughout the glove, providing instant feedback at all the points of your swing. Made of high-quality cabretta leather, you can use SensoGlove anywhere… backyard practice, on the driving range or during a practice round. SensoGlove will teach you the best grip!

Journal of… SpiRiTS

Jason Barry Barry Estates

Jason & Catherine Barry Ranked # 1 Team in San Diego County and #20 in the Nation in The Wall Street Journal for 2010 Residential Real Estate Sales. what is it that attraCts you the most about real estate?

I initially got into real estate because I needed money after my car was stolen while attending UCSD. My parents, Dan and Catherine suggested real estate sales. No one wanted to entrust their million dollar home to a 20 something kid so I worked every open house I could and did everything and anything my mother suggested. On one cold call occasion I was verbally abused, again, by a seller who finished his tirade complaining about his faulty irrigation system, I thought, “finally an opening!” I grabbed a gardener and headed over to help Dr. Martin fix his problem. I acquired my first listing and after having Dr. Martin cancel multiple times, I finally closed escrow. What a great experience! My motto was to take everything on; I thought I was invincible. Now we are fortunate in that we have to be selective with our business.

It’s the challenge to maintain our #1 position in San Diego, selling more high-end real estate than anyone else. It is also the satisfaction in completing transactions in which my clients become good friends.

By remaining very committed and developing new sales strategies. When most of the real estate businesses scaled back we took the opportunity to push our marketing and sales to new levels. As a result our market share increased even more over the last years.

what would you Consider to be the greatest Challenge that you have faCed as a realtor?

what plaCe would you reCommend as the ideal destination anywhere in the world?

Learning how to transform bad situations into good ones. Initially it was learning that a “No” from buyers and sellers doesn’t always really mean “No.” Everyone wants to say “Yes,” it was a challenge to learn how to help create situations in which everyone feels good to say “Yes.” Now my greatest challenge is balancing family life with work.

Rancho Santa Fe and Del Mar, where you find the best amenities, weather, people and real estate.

what would you Consider is the ideal property? Any property that makes your wife happy– I’m kidding–, any property that meets most of a buyer’s criteria and simply feels good.

how have you managed to Cope in these times of eConomiC hardship?

tell us a little bit about your hobbies and interests. Watching any sport or activity my four children are engaged in. I love to engage

what has been the best and worst experienCe in your Career? One of my best experiences in real estate was in 1996 when I was financially broke. I was working with buyers from Australia who ended up buying an Estate Home and it was my first multi-million dollar sale. When I found out the seller accepted my buyer’s counter offer I was so excited that I remember driving in my car and breaking the sound barrier, singing along to every song that played on the radio. Another great experience was selling a $20 Million dollar Estate to a friend, from a friend and everyone felt great with the outcome. Ironically my worst experiences were all beneficial because I learned how to deal with incredibly bad situations. When I first got into real estate a very good client, who became a very good friend, advised me to use a every bad situation and find the opportunity in it.

summer brings a massive treat under its arm: two weeks packed with sporting competitions that will begin on July 27th 2012, with a splendid opening ceremony, and will come to a close on August 12th 2012 when the olympic flame is finally extinguished. We highly recomend that you visit London during these incredible two weeks! London was designated as the olympic host for 2012 on July 6th 2005. The cities it competed against to host this year’s games were tough rivals: New York, Moscow, Paris and Madrid. The London bid won in a tight vote, it came on top with only 54 votes over the 50 given to Paris.London has previously held the Olympic Games in 1908 and in

1948. It is now the third time that the British capital hosts the Olympics. The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games has been comissioned to Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, who will try to make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity of a show in London’s newly built Olympic Stadium, especially constructed for the 2012 games. The construction of the above mentioned stadium has been one of the most ecofriendly and enviromantally sound projects in the world. The building was constructed with 75% less steel than what would normally have been used for a building like this. A low carbon concrete made from industrial waste was also employed for the construc-

Talking about the weather is a national pastime and source of fascination. The climate is hugely unpredictable, oscillating between heavy rain and scorching sunshine within the space of minutes.

Where to stay tion. The stadium is architectural proof of London 2012’s comittment to sutainability and the motto: “reduce, reuse, recycle.” When not at the Olympic Games you should go for a saunter through Hyde Park, London’s largest park. Open to the public since 1637, this park is home to many sport clubs, amongst them, the Serpentine Swimming Club—whose members swim in the Serpentine lake every day regardless of the weather conditions. During the Olympics the park will host the marathon swimming events as well as the Triathlon. Hyde Park will also hold, musical events, theater performances and movie festivals all through the summer. Up next we would like to give you some information on two of our favorite lodging selections for London this summer: the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and the classic Dorchester.

One of the capital’s most distinguished hotels created with luxurious English elegance. The Dorchester is a highly fashionable address in London.

Breathtaking views over Hyde Park are offered from most of the sumptuous suites, along with a level of refined luxury that only something of u n co m p ro m i s i n g quality can achieve. The hotel has also enjoyed a reputation as a political meeting place for celebrated statesmen. Members of the Royal Family have always been frequent guests of the hotel—Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the late Princess Margaret first learned to dance here; and more recently The Royal Family were in attendance at the pre-wedding gala party in the iconic Ballroom on the eve of The Royal Wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. A unique partnership with the Halcyon Gallery allows for original artwork to be

showcased throughout The Royal Suite. These pieces, including an Isis Sculpture in the living room which mimics the one in Hyde Park, and original artwork by Chagall, Renoir and Degas, will be exchanged regularly and guests will also have the opportunity to purchase any desired artwork.

THE DORCHESTER For 75 years, The Dorchester Hotel has welcomed celebrities, world leaders and society with gracious style and provides the ultimate London address for visitors wanting to stay in the heart of this dynamic city. Strategically located in London’s exclusive Mayfair on Park Lane (between Marble Arch and Hyde Park Corner), The Dorchester is within easy access to London’s most exclusive shopping areas, including New Bond Street, Old Bond Street and Knightsbridge. Oxford Street and Piccadilly are also close by. Many of London’s main attractions, including the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and Big

and most welcoming teams. The Dorchester’s new ballroom has opened after an extensive renovation. The major reworking however was carried out to the staircase making it grander and much more welcoming with Art-Deco inspired bronze finish balustrade. New chandeliers and completely restored wall sconses now make this space brighter and grander than before. The Dorchester Spa was reopened in 2009 after a complete transformation. Exuding 1930s Art Deco glamour, combined with a contemporary edge, design is inspired by the iconic British style of The Dorchester. The spa also features nine spacious and sound-proof treatment rooms including two double suites, a manicure-pedicure suite, a sleek relaxation room, male and female aromatic steam rooms and male and female experience showers.

Ben, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the London Eye and the Tower of London are easily accessible. Just a two-minute walk from Hyde Park Corner underground station, The Dorchester is within minutes of London’s West End theatres, as well as the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and the English National Opera House at the London Coliseum. The Dorchester offers rooms of exceptional grace and comfort, all providing views over Hyde Park or the hotel’s landscaped terraces. The suites range in size from the Junior and Stanhope Suites to the generous Dorchester Suites and the famous Oliver Messel Suite. Bathrooms are welcoming and spacious, offering an exceptional combination of style and function. They are predominantly made in Italian marble and designed in the classic art deco style—echoing the hotel’s 1930s origins. Known collectively as the ‘roof suites’, the Audley, Terrace and Harlequin are discretely reminiscent of the Hollywood glamour long associated with the hotel. The design of these suites emulates the style in which The Dorchester was originally built in the 1930’s while remaining fresh, modern and luxurious. All three roof suites have large outside terraces, which enjoy unrivalled views over London. The award winning restaurants and bars at The Dorchester are run by London’s best

hen it comes to showcasing great city destinations, without falling in Parisian or Roman platitudes, Istanbul is probably one of the most emblematic choices out there. The head of three empires, Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman, and home to Greeks, Persians and Crusaders, Istanbul is Europe’s Muslim capital and its third most densely populated city. This metropolis boasts its ideal location on the Bosphorus stretch, making it a strategic bridge between Europe and Asia. The idea that a sophisticated traveler should overlook Istanbul is almost unforgivable. If the city, its culture and history are not enough to entice you to visit (don’t worry, we won’t hold it against you later) there is another reason for you to drop by, Ciragan Palace Kempinski. Situated on the European bank of the Bosphorus (the old quaint part of Istanbul) between the districts of Berksitas and Ortakoy, the Ciragan emulates the luxury of Ottoman Sultans in a five star ambience, being the first Turkish member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Ciragan Palace Kempinski comprises 313 rooms, 20 suites in its hotel and 11 in its historic palace. The latter come with 24-hour butler service as well as a helicopter landing pad and a private entrance

to your suite. The Sultan Suite, according to the hotel, is one of the larges in Europe at 376 square meters. It has a 180 panoramic view of the Bosphorous stretch; a private sauna and even an LCD screen TV in the bathroom. The hotel has a Spa and hammam, Turkish massage service, infinity pool and first-rate sport facilities. There are five restaurants that can seat from 90 to 200 people and a Bar at Ciragan Palace. Culinary options range from international fare and afternoon tea at the Gazebo lounge; traditional Ottoman and Turkish cuisine at the Tugra Restaurant; Sunday brunch at Laledan and fresh seafood, to grill specialties at the Ciragan Bosphorous Barbecue. The Fumoir Bar holds a sophisticated ambiance with an Eastern backdrop and serves excellent cognacs, whiskeys, wines and champagnes, as well as offering a wide selection of good cigars. You can also enjoy top-notch cocktails while listening to a live Jazz band or book one of its private rooms if intimacy is what you desire. If unparalleled luxury and a cosmopolitan vibe seem to suit you, so will Istambul. Ciragan Caddesi 32, Besiktas, 34349, Istanbul Ph: 90 212 326 4646 kempinski.com/en/istanbul

A

visit to Beijing China promises to be a once in a lifetime magical experience that encompasses antiquity as well as modernity. Beijing is a city that fuses its millenary culture with an industrialized vanguard society. Beijing goes back all the way to the first millennium B.C. It has been rebuilt several times throughout its history. It could be stated that the heart of the city is The Forbidden City and from this heart Beijing displays—in urban concentric rings, a design reminiscent of the Ming dynasty—the different stages of urbanization undergone by the city. Old Beijing, with its temples, palaces and narrow alleyways constitute the second city ring and around this historic downtown you can find modern Beijing with its skyscrapers. In the northeast of downtown Beijing, fifteen kilometers away from The Forbidden City, lies an intimate niche of peace and tranquility adjacent to the old imperial Summer Palace; this is à man at the Summer Palace, Beijing. This resort comprises the original dwellings where the palace guests awaiting an audience with empress Dowager Cixi would stay.

Built in 1750, the Summer Palace was the summer retreat for the members of the Qing dynasty. Today, the Summer Palace comprises 209 hectares that encompass various palaces, gardens and other classical architectonic structures. Áman at the Summer Palace has eight rooms and 25 suites, and around a central patio of the resort, crossed by regal pathways and enchanting gardens you can find 10 more rooms and seven suites that boast greater spaciousness. The whole aesthetic of the hotel goes back to China’s imperial past and its construction, decoration and furniture were made with traditional and local materials. The resort houses four restaurants were you can enjoy culinary options that range from light lunches at The Lounge, Franco-Japanese food at Naoki; western style grill at The Grill, to Chinese imperial and Cantonese food at The Chinese Restaurant. The hotel also has a bar, music pavilion, spa, a spectacular 25-meter indoor pool, gym, library, boutique and a theater with thirty-seven leather seats. 15 Gongmenqian Street, Summer Palace, Beijing, PRC 100091 Ph: 86 10 5987 9999 amanresorts.com/amanatsummerpalace

Rambagh Palace India

From the home of the queen’s favourite handmaiden, to royal guesthouse and hunting lodge, and later as the residence of the Maharaja, this ‘Jewel of Jaipur’ has stepped gracefully through many royal transitions.

A

trip to Rambagh Palace is a truly romantic affair. It is best to plan a stay at this amazing palace with the intention of celebrating truly special occasions—such as anniversaries, honeymoons and jubilees—since this is a truly special place. However, an impromptu visit with the person you met yesterday at a bar and with whom you have fallen helplessly in love, should not be completely dismissed. Displaying great opulence and exquisite luxury in considerable quantities, Rambagh Palace in Jaipur Rajasthan, India is an architectonic jewel in whose walls converge a rich monarchic tradition with the history of an outstanding country and its millenary culture. Built in 1835, Rambagh was originally the residence of the queen’s favorite handmaiden. Afterwards it became a guesthouse and a hunting lodge. This manor house was named Rambagh in honor of the reigning monarch of the time Sawai Ram Sing II. His grandson, Sawai Man Sing was housed at Rambagh upon his ascension in 1910 and it also became his residence after a stay in England where he completed his studies at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich UK. Sawai Man Sing came back from England with the intention of transforming Rambagh into the magnificent palace that it is today. Rambagh Palace

became the official residence of the Jaipur Maharaja in 1925 and the 1930s were a decade of splendor for this palace. In 1947, as a consequence of the independence of India, Rambagh became the house of the government of Rajasthan. Although it functioned as an official and royal residence for a while, in 1952 Rambagh palace was transformed into the high-end hotel it is today and was administered by the royal family until 1972 when it became part of the Taj Hotel Resorts family. To stay at Rambagh is incredible. The rooms and suites are works of art with silk cushions and bedspreads in gold and silver brocade. They are functional restoration pieces equipped with Wi Fi, satellite television and an extensive room service menu. Rambagh Palace has many traditional and international culinary options in its three restaurants: Suavarna Mahal, The Rajput Room and The Verandah. You can also drink a gin and tonic at the legendary Polo Bar or a cocktail at the hip Steam Lounge. How about a game of elephant Polo? almilla is one of Mexico’s most elegant resorts and one of the first to have opened up in Los Cabos. It is one of the few authentically Mexican properties in the tourist strip next to the Sea of Cortez. Reopened as a One&Only in 2004, this resort extends over 100 hectares that are situated next to one of the few beach stretches in Los Cabos where it is safe to go for a swim. Palmilla boasts an agreeable Mexican hacienda style architecture with lime washed walls, red tiled roofs and forged iron railings that stand underneath the shade of lush palm trees and the warm rays of the sun. Each one of its 172 rooms has a spectacular view of the Sea of Cortez, so does its signature Jack Nicklaus golf course. Palmilla also comprises a tennis club, a spa and children and adult only swimming pools. Palmilla’s Mexican style architecture has its apotheosis in its outstanding Villa Cortéz, a 790 square meter hacienda that was erected in a sandy cove in 2008. Its charming and hospitable patio entrance leads you through wooden doors unto the villas’ office, gym, spa area, suite, a 5.9-meter screen private movie theater and also the main house that holds 3 additional guest rooms. house you can access the pool, patio and palapa areas that are big enough to hold a grand fiesta for which 12 staff members at your service will gladly cater your guests. Under the wing of a maitre d’, the staff is qualified to serve dinner next to an outside bonfire, teach you how to use the scooters or help you use the bronze telescopes in the patio to observe the Los Cabos star filled night sky. Besides its vibrant and festive atmosphere, Palmilla possesses the enough tranquility and harmony to foster romance or rekindle the fire in an anniversary trip that might require seclusion and privacy. However, the intensity that characterizes a stay in Los Cabos can never be undermined. It is this intensity that makes visitors return to Los Cabos, as well as Palmilla, over and over again. Picture Perfect On the next four pages we present Memories of 2011 and Wellington 2012. Capturing the moments of triumph—the kiss, the pat, the hug, the smiles and clearing the puissance wall... These images not only keep the memories alive but also remind us what an incredible animal the horse truly is. How lucky we are to have them as a part of our lives and how we should cherish every detail. The 2012 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival is well underway. From world ranking classes to Olympic Trials, high performance hunters to derbies at night, the season is hot in Wellington. With strong international flavor, the riders who’ve flocked here are in for plenty of great sport. Come on down to Wellington where the weather is good, the social scene is superb and the competition is out of this world.

1. SKYDIVING will give you the ultimate rush! The closest you’ll ever be to actually having wings and flying through the sky like a bird.

We are always making lists in our heads, or gadgets, of the tasks we want to do in regards to our everyday utilitarian chores at work and at home. However, we would like to propose a different kind of list, one that has ten exiting activities that will change your perspective on life in an unexpected manner. Why not give them a try!
