Perfect Look FINDING THE PERFECT FRAME

Square Face Paul Smith You should try slightly round or oval frames that will smooth the edges and shape of your face. Take notice: slightly round but never round. This spring, try these by Paul Smith. paulsmith.co.uk

Diamond Face Prada If you have strong cheekbones and a narrow forehead and chin, the best fit for you are oval frames because they smooth the face contour. Try a dramatic look with these fabulous Prada shades. prada.com

Triangular Face Ray Ban If you have wide forehead and cheeks with a narrow chin the best frames for you are squared and oval designs in bold colors. Try these aviators for a perfect look. ray-ban.com

Rectangular Face DKNY Because there is a wide space between the forehead and the jaw, it is advisable to choose square frames that cover the upper part of the face. Also, choose intense colors that will minimize attention to the face shape. DKNY has great choices for you. dkny.com

Round Face Prada If you have a round face, try shades with natural curves that follow the round contour of the eye creating a square rather than a circle. Try to avoid straight lines or sharp edges. The best choices for you are thick and wide frames like these Prada. prada.com

Oval Face Oliver Peoples The lucky ones who have this face shape are encouraged to try different sizes and shapes, however the size of the shades should be proportional to the size of the face. A great option to try are these vintage Oliver People frames. oliverpeoples.com

Stefano Bemer

One Of the mOst acclaimed European bespoke shoe designers was Stefano Bemer, a man who truly represented the beauty and art of Firenze and its craft on each creation. He stated that the most important asset of footwear was inside the shoe, making shoes adapt to the user instead of being merely a simple accessory. On his Firenze shoe workshop, what Bemer himself baptized as “signature shoes” come to llife. Thanks to his lessons and legacy, this workshop continues to create shoes with the same passion and know-how. With expert ability and great attention for detail they search to fulfill every client’s desire. In order to create these shoes, the leather in use is previously treated to obtain the most out of it in terms of elasticity, longevity and comfort. Every part of it is hand cut and stitched with linen strings covered in bee wax and a 100% vegetable glue that guarantees the beauty of your shoes for a very long time. For their latest spring summer collection launched in Pitti Uomo, the starring characters are exotic leathers like antelope, ostrich, alligator and hippopotamus. Get yours on their iconic wood box with cobalt blue lid on top and a six pence coin inside honoring the old Scottish tradition of wishing luck and good fortune for the wise buyer. stefanobemer.com

Amber Stone

ENIGMATIC STONE AND POSITIVE ENERGY SOURCE

AMBER IS A PRECIOUS stone widely used to create fashion jewelry thanks to its natural beauty and the exclusivity of its limited sources. Unlike the diamond and other precious stones, this organic stone has a hue palette that runs from yellow to orange, depending of the color of the soil and rocks amidst which it is found. However, there is also a variety of high value among jewelers called blue amber. It was given this name because, when is lit with an ultraviolet light lamp, it reflects blue shades, but if you see it against the light the blue amber will show its customary orange. Mexico has some of the finest examples of amber stones, so during your trip don’t miss the opportunity to acquire a piece of amber jewelry that will give a unique touch to your outfit. museodelambar.com.mx

Mexican Silver MEXICAN TREASURE

Photos: Courtesy of Tane and Museo del Ambar.

THE BEAUTIFUL AND DISTINCTIVE Mexican silver is no longer just a piece of souvenir. New Mexican jewelry designers have brought the metal to the catwalk; many of them with designs of pronounced nationalism instilled with glamour, while others propose rather austere designs with a fashionista stroke in them. Meanwhile, the great houses of silver have been the main promoters of .925 silver as luxury pieces, as those were the vanguard designs that opened the door for silver’s worldwide fancy. Long gone are the crazy 30s when American William Spratling innovated silver jewelry in Taxco. 21st century’s Mexican fashion is giving the conservativeness of Mexican silver a new face. tane.com.mx

Pantera

WE LOVE HANDBAGS and if there’s a 100% Mexican brand that knows this, that’s Pantera. Founded in 2004 by sisters Claudia, Alejandra and Laura Laviada, it all started as a hobby; today their brand has achieved an international reputation that places Mexican design in the map of luxury brands. Pantera bags are made from the most exclusives materials: beautiful and exotic leather, with simple yet sophisticated patterns and a faultless design in each of its pieces that makes them stand apart. Carrying one of these bags will complement any outfit you wear as each of their creations is marked by exceptional quality, not only for the selection of leathers, but also for the handcraft process that brings each piece to match the functionality, price and distinct style of its models. All the bags are hand-made and during the preparation process, meeting of standards of the brand is verified, making each piece a unique and special product. The line is modern, but the

brand aims to create lasting and timeless pieces that will become a spectacular classic. For Pantera, environmental protection and the conservation of the species is very important, for that reason, all their exotic leathers come from strictly regulated and certified breeding centers. Its name reflects strength, something aggressive but feminine at the same time, giving the touch of state-of-the-art they want to convey.

Today the company also produces men accessories and housewares, but not only has its product offering expanded, its distribution as well: It has had a presence in the U.S. for some time now and with its first flagship store in Mexico, Pantera is looking to expand its offer with exceptionally personalized service, a gift table and a number of exclusive products, such as one-of-a-kind bags. pantera.com.mx

protEcting MExico’s wildlifE

InspIred by the bird that represents the Mexican nation, Jean Richard’s Royal Eagle pays homage to this magnificent creature of the Terrascope collection. On the days before the Spanish conquest, the eagle represents the light on Aztec’s mythology, today the Golden Eagle terrascope comes to life with and innovative, sporty and elegant design with a coussin kind of box: a broad rounded bevel of a very masculine and original fashion.

The independent spirit combines resistance and sophistication in this water resistant timepiece. Another important aspect of this watch is that battery won’t be a problem since it is powered by an exclusive JR60 automatic movement with a power reserve of up to 42 hours. This piece pays homage to the Mexican symbol, and presents a satin-like finish touch on black above of a fine engraving of the most representative characteristics of this imposing

bird of prey. This awesome edition is limited to only 50 pieces each individually numbered including a black rubber strap, with a black fluted surfaced signed JR and a detachable lock. Jean Richard creates this magnificent piece to protect endangered wildlife by donating most of the profits to the Refugio Salvaje foundation, this way, new owners can helps such magnificent animals in a very fashionable way. jeanrichard.com

RECENTLY, THE TRADITION AND MYSTICISM of the Wixårica people are reflected in everyday objects, for example in beautiful shoes made for today’s cosmopolitan woman who looks for exclusive designs with a unique identity. The exquisite bead design and current fabrics follow ancestral patterns, elaborated designs and bright colors that turn folk art into a statement of fashion and style. Inspired by the magic and beauty of Huichol art, the famous women footwear designer Christian Louboutin made the Mexibeads shoes: pumps that, like Huichol jewelry, tightly embed small chaquira beads to create stunning images, combined with precious knitting and valued style which radiate glamor in every step. ANCIENT MEXICAN CIVILIZATIONS

THE LARGE AMOUNT OF SYMBOLS in Mexican indigenous writing systems, their architecture and extraordinary knowledge about the universe, are some of the characteristics that motivated Montegrappa to create this limited collection. The Ancient Mexican Civilizations collection includes the Aztec sun god engraved on the pen’s body, representing a cyclical system of the time resulting from observing the movement of the stars and the changes in their environment. Inspired by ancient and vigorous pre-Columbian cultures located in Mexican territory, it consists of a collection of pens with a patented system by Montegrappa incorporating the piston filling mechanism. A detail that makes them unique is their clip, shaped after the sword used by Mayan priests to deliver their offerings to the gods. This collection’s 18K gold caps and deposits points are hand-engraved. montegrappa.com

T.E.A.M. Israel: Building a Dream Team and Cultivating a Community

A

ll athletes have a dream. It’s that vision that drives them to reach their potential. For a small but determined group of focused equestrians, that dream extends beyond a singular goal. Thinking big but taking one step at a time, T.E.A.M. Israel is making strides in the equestrian world. The Equine Athletics Mission Israel (T.E.A.M. Israel) is a non-profit organization dedicated to building, cultivating, improving and evolving an equestrian culture for Israel. Growing this dream into a solid mission and creating a new foundation takes tremendous focus, follow-through and forethought. Having a name that spells out a bold venture by a unified team, the initial aspects involved commitment from several individuals, including Kate Levy. Kate was kind enough to take some time to talk with Equ about this athletic mission.

speaking of t.e.a.M. you built a teaM of riders to represent israel in the fei nations Cup in wellington this year. was that the first tiMe an israeli teaM rode in a nations Cup? Yes it was the first time a team represented Israel in any equestrian sport. So it was a remarkable event and we are really proud of it. As CEO of T.E.A.M. Israel I thought it was vital to have a Nations Cup team for this effort. The Foundation needed a lynchpin to bring everyone together and make it tangible. We had our launch event the evening prior. That was a great way to spark interest, and send off the Team. We all felt a tremendous sense of Israeli National Pride.

Can you provide a bit of history about you as a rider and how you got involved in t.e.a.M. israel?

tell us the story of putting a nations Cup teaM together in less than a week. both riders and horses. pretty unbelievable.

I’ve had my own training business for many years, including buying and selling horses. I rode on U.S. Teams, competed in World Cup Finals and was an alternate for the 2008 Olympics. Danielle Goldstein is a good friend. This is her dream. The project she was starting with T.E.A.M. Israel tapped my passion for horses and Israel. I was mentoring her a bit last year and in November she offered me the position of T.E.A.M. Israel CEO.

That feat was truly amazing. We had very little time and it seemed like an impossible task. When we decided to build this team in January – we only had Danielle. The fact that we almost had a full team of four when we had never had a team was big. Unfortunately one rider couldn’t participate, so we ended up with three. Elad Yaniv came all the way from Israel to compete in the Nations Cup with Danielle’s urging.

Joshua Tabor, who has a business in Texas, was competing on the Ocala circuit and agreed to join us.

And the horses? Most riders competing in the Nations Cup have their own horses that they compete with on a regular basis. Danielle and her fantastic horse Charisma were ready to go but our other team members, Joshua and Elad, didn’t have horses ready to compete at this level. Finding and ‘renting’ grand prix horses for a weekend for riders that the horse owners didn’t know was difficult. Well-known and wonderful horsemen Nelson Pessoa and owner Uri Mansur as well as Ivan Rakowsky and Javier Berganza stepped up by offering the use of Zamillus Again and C Quito. The horses were both incredible. Honestly I would have these horses in my barn in a heartbeat. I was so honored and impressed to see all these people coming together to make certain we had a team at the 11th hour. It was amazing and unforgettable.

FINDING THE PERFECT SWIMSUIT for the next vacations, a fabulous weekend getaway or chilling by the pool, has proven to be a problem for many men out there. During a holiday in India, the acclaimed photographer Adam Brown realized this and decided to create a comfortable and sophisticated swimwear brand for men. This inspiration became the brilliant idea of standing out by creating tailored fit pieces as a practical and smart choice that you can swim in and still look way better than with the average bathing suit. Fantastic creations that will help you look fabulous along the way. By using quick dry fabrics of a very light weight, these garments are elaborated as tailored fit shorts, with novelty designs created to satisfy manly taste. Orlebar Brown mixes fashio-

nable prints with classic fits of artisanal quality creating sophisticated swimwear with a unique cut that stands out in both comfort and style.

Since its first release back in 2007, the unparalleled Orlebar Brown collections are both modern and classic, and have taken artisanal fit and work to a whole new level in swimwear fashion leaving all competition behind. Described by their creator as “not a swim short, but a short you can swim in” they are the perfect mix of stylish, sporty and swim wear you can use indoors or outside at the beach and still look casual and fashionable. Temazcal

Skin care iS alwayS at the top of the list of things we wish we could pay more attention to. There are treatments, like the one presented in this issue of Equ, which no only focuses on the outside part of the body but is also responsible for the integral relieve of our body and mind. The Temazcal is an ancient treatment based on the use of steam as a method of relaxation and purification. This treatment is done in small volcanic rock dome rooms, separate from the main house. The snug temazcal emulates the womb so one somehow regresses to the most pleasant time in one’s life. Red-hot volcanic stones are sprinkled with water in order to obtain steam; this can be combined with infusions of medicinal herbs which in turn are absorbed by our body.

To begin with, this treatment is a good way to improve our respiratory system because the steam opens its tracts, eliminating possible contaminants that impair their function. Subsequently, the steam plus the infusions open the skin pores and help us to quickly remove impurities through sweat. This will help us to have a much more luminous, smoother skin in better conditions. But this treatment is not only this, as the properties of the steams and the state that surrounds us inside the Temazcal will make for an absolute relaxation, helping us to calm down and avoid the problems stress causes to our body everyday. As you can see, the Temazcal is an excellent option to improve your entire body. melia.com

T

he only American among six Official Photographers invited to cover the CHI Al Shaqab 2014, an international equestrian competition in March of this year, was Californian Amy McCool, owner of McCool Photography. Through her lens and her journal we have the pleasure of seeing and experiencing more about the Qatar culture as well as its burgeoning equestrian scene.

In Amy’s words . . . Upon arrival I was assigned a driver who was at my disposal. Whenever I chose, an E-Class Mercedes would appear at the Ritz, my hotel, to whisk me around the city. And a fortunate circumstance that proved to be, as driving (or going along for the ride) in Doha is not for the faint of heart. Qataris drive aggressively at a breakneck pace, making the frequent roundabouts mixed with road construction more like a Nascar obstacle course!

I had gorgeous views of the Marina and The Pearl Qatar from my hotel room. I could also see a dozen high rises in the process of ‘rising’. There is a large amount of construction going on all over Doha, apparently in preparation for the 2022 World Cup. A dazzling country that exudes wealth, Qataris enjoy that bounty in myriad ways. With the nation’s abiding respect for schooling, every student in Qatar is offered a free university education, all the way through the PhD level. And if a student wishes to study outside of the country, he or she may do so, and Qatar will pay the costs. Students have only to meet their own responsibilities by keeping a respectable grade-point average.

The Facilities Early in my stay I was given a tour of the magnificent Al Shaqab. A beautifully designed equestrian center with multiple amenities, the Breeding Facility is impec-

cable, complete with a pool and a jacuzzi for the horses. My Qatari friend and tour guide told me that to breed a mare to one of the Al Shaqab stallions, if you are a Qatari national, is free of charge. The bloodlines and conformation of the mare will be examined by Al Shaqab to determine which stallion is best suited for her. Equine arranged marriages! My tour also included the Riding Academy, a beautiful new state of the art complex with a lovely indoor arena that features plush seating for spectators, and a classroom equipped with a Dressage Simulator. As the grand doors of the Riding Academy Stable opened, I loved seeing a long aisle lined with small happy ponies in beautifully designed stalls that were just their size.

The Fashion It was surprising to see how important fashion is to the women of Qatar. Despite the long black cloak, the abaya, that they are required to wear over their clothing, their accessories are tres chic. Most Qatari women also cover their hair with a scarf called the hijab, and the more conservative women wear the burqa that covers the face as well. The men wear the traditional long cloak called the throbe, always white and scrupulously clean. Because it’s inappropriate to photograph a Qatari woman’s face, I was unable to capture the woman, also a photographer, standing next to me shooting the horse show. She was wearing beautiful high heels, and she had a stunning gold and black leather purse slung over one shoulder, with her Canon camera on the other. I felt decidedly underdressed in my North Face jacket and Columbia SPF shirt! I find this country and the people to be fascinating.

The Work When all of the photographers had arrived, we were given an official briefing, and each of us was assigned to a particular discipline according to our preference. Since I have extensive experience with dressage, I was given that assignment. Dressage didn’t start until the third day of competition, so I had a few days to have fun and shoot whatever I chose.

There were hundreds of media shooters, and Al Shaqab hired four international photographers in addition to those on staff, to cover the event. The images from the six of us who were Official Photographers were uploaded throughout the day to an online image bank for Press and Media downloading. Every morning at the hotel, I would open the local newspaper, the Gulf News, to find our images from the day before displayed on the entire back page of the sports section on lovely glossy paper.

Amazing Arabs Because it’s something that I have never seen, a highlight for me was the Desert and the FEI Endurance Ride. The horses that do this are utterly amazing. The long course is roughly 100 miles in deep sand -- truly incredible. I had a 4:00am wake-up call to make the hour’s drive out to the desert for the start of the race, but this morning’s driver was the only slow one that I had all week, and we didn’t make it. There was no Mercedes this time -- just a 4x4 Land Cruiser. We did get there in time to see the horses come in from the first loop (30km), and I was completely in awe! For the last twelve years, I have known I was doing what I was meant to do, because I am literally brought to tears at least once at every horse show I shoot. For this one

it was watching the horses as they came in after that first lap showing incredible heart. There isn’t a place on earth that I would rather have been at that moment, than in the Qatari Desert shooting these amazing Arabian horses.

What A Week Unfortunately a week was too short to squeeze in everything that I wanted to do. My future husband, who lives in the Caribbean, met me in Qatar, and he piqued my curiosity about camel racing. In 2006 Qatar banned child jockeys, so remote control robotic jockeys now ‘ride’ the camels. What fun it would have been to shoot that! Another thing that I had wanted to do was to swim in the Persian Gulf. The sand is lovely, and the water a stunning turquoise color. It didn’t fit in the agenda this trip, but it will be top on the list when I return.

F

or this special Mexico issue, there is nothing better than the Mexican elixir known as tequila. A wild spirit that is part of every Mexican celebration. Enjoy it sip by sip and discover a strong, round flavor in your palate.

SPIRIT José Cuervo Platino

Is the first ultra premium silver tequila of the Private Reserve collection by the Cuervo family house. A limited edition inspired by the 200 years tradition of the firm, this is a versatile tequila to be tasted straight or on the rocks. Its notes are of boiled agave, fresh and elegant. Subtle on the palate, Its great balance makes for a perfect appetizer.

Gran Patrón Burdeos Anejo A unique creation, Gran Patrón tequila is matured for 12 months in American and French barrels. After the first aging it is placed to age for a second time in Bordeaux barrels where grand cru wines have matured. Its bouquet evokes asparagus, baked bread, subtle notes of vanilla and tobaco leaves. On the palate it is delicious with subtle notes of honey and a satiny and spicy texture.

Tequila Herradura Selección Suprema One of the most eccentric tequilas made for true connoisseurs. Because of its four-year aging, it is classified in the extra-aged tequilas category. Highly exalted, with aromas of rose petals, vanilla, cinnamon and citrus, it preserves its essential aroma of agave. In palate it offers a complex taste to boiled agave and dried fruits. It’s delightful for its delicate taste with creamy and toasty notes.

La Casa Azul

Feet, what do i need you For when i have wings to Fly?

Built to acclaim the style, talent, originality and beauty of Frida Kahlo, this magical place is a magnificent temple where the spirit of the most prestigious female painters Mexico developed into a legend. What makes this place so special is that this is the place where the artist was born, lived and died. As soon as you get inside La Casa Azul, you are immediately transported to Frida’s universe and you’ll find some of her iconic pieces like “Viva la vida” or “Frida and the caesarean operation”, you also be able to appreciate old diaries, mirrors, dresses, her bed, her bedroom and the artist’s ashes and remains.

If you are lucky enough to visit this place, you’ll come to understand the profound relationship between Frida, her work and her house; her whole creative universe was there. Located in 247 Londres street in Coyoacán, one of the most picturesque and charming neighboorhoods in Mexico City, La Casa Azul became a museum back in 1958, only four years after the death of the renowned artist. This house has a history of its own: it became the place to be for the bohemian clique of the city back in the 1930s and 40s. There she shared her life with Diego Rivera, even after their divorce, when he moved into a separate room;

today we can find part of his prehispanic pieces collection there. La Casa Azul was the heart and soul of Frida’s work, it became a cultural symbol of the city and also revealed several facets of Frida iconic style including her tehuana dresses, her Shalimar perfume, colorful shawls as a token of the love she felt for her country, a love she professed on the color of her wardrobe, her brushstrokes and all the elements of the one of a kind and irreplaceable Frida Kahlo. An American in Baarlo

American Lauren Hester takes us from the Netherlands to Spain

MARCH 2014: One week Out fROM tHe sHOw in OlivA, spAin . . . My days begin at about 7:15am with a nice breakfast, while watching the news with my roommates, Petronella Andersson (from Sweden) and Asta Torokvei (from Canada). Petronella is one of the main in-

ternational riders for Stal Hendrix, and Asta, like me, is a client of Emile and rides with him. Work in the stable begins at 8:00am, and since our apartment is just above the stable, I have a very short walk to work. This apartment was my home in the Netherlands during my stay from May to October of 2012, and again since my arrival in April of 2013. The day started with my 11-year-old mare Abigail. I always tack up my first horse while my groom Jasmine Groth (Jassu) cleans the stalls. We started out with basic flat work for about ten minutes, and then Luc Steeghs (an employee of Stal Hendrix for more than 20 years) arrived to give me a dressage lesson. Looking ahead to the show one week away, I jumped Daister (Danny), the newest member of Hester Equestrian. He’s only six, but already showing a lot of talent; I’m extremely excited about him. Athena was next, and I jumped her as well. When we practice at home we normally jump a basic course, not too big; to keep the horses

T

wenty-six year old Lauren Hester is pursuing the dream of becoming an internationally acclaimed show jumper. Choosing to train in the Netherlands with Emile Hendrix and staff meant leaving her familiar American lifestyle behind. As glorious and glamorous as that may sound, the path is paved with long days, hard work, and adjusting to life far from home. With international aspirations in mind, Lauren also runs Hester Equestrian. She manages a group of horses, building a solid string for her show jumping goals; but also develops young horses. Over the last five years, Hester Equestrian has sold a handful of talented mounts to riders in various disciplines from show jumping to hunters to dressage. The young yet driven American has a routine that keeps both Lauren and her horses in top shape for competition. Equ asked Lauren to write about life at home in Holland as well as on the road. In Lauren’s words… I live in an extraordinarily small town in the Netherlands called Baarlo, so tiny it’s difficult to find on a map.

fit for jumping. This has been a very mild winter, so I rode Warinde B (Ella) outside, and ended by riding Wender (Jack) in the woods. My riding is usually finished by about 1:00pm, and I have lunch and then go to the gym. Yesterday I ran five miles and used the rowing machine for thirty minutes. After I showered I met a friend for dinner and a movie. The movies here are all in English with Dutch subtitles, as are many of our American shows on TV. At home in California I was used to an early dinner and a 10:00pm bedtime. Here there is no chance for that; we usually don’t eat before 7:00pm, and I’m lucky if I’m in bed by 11:00pm. After our big night out bedtime was after midnight. That is late for me! No sleeping in though, at 7:15am the alarm went off and it was time to get ready for work. My riding plan started with Abigail again, and after her strong flatwork session yesterday, she jumped amazingly well today. Next I jumped Ella and Jack; all are feeling ready to go to Spain and compete. I rode both Athena and Danny outside. After riding, lunch was my usual omelet for some good protein, and I was off to the gym. As I write this, Asta and I are driving to Emmers, a tack shop in Belgium that’s about 45 minutes away, to pick up some last-minute gear for Spain. Since we were in the city (Emmers is in Hamont, Belgium) we met a couple of friends for sushi.

On tO Spain . . . The horses arrived in Spain at 7:00am on Saturday morning, and as soon as I heard they were there, I threw on my clothes and headed to the show grounds. They were all tired from the 16 plus hour journey, as was my groom Jassu, so we gave them breakfast and some water and allowed them to rest for a bit. Jassu went back to the lorry (horse truck) to get some sleep.

After a few hours, I came back to hand walk all of the horses and let them see the show grounds. This show is part of the Mediterranean Tour, so you can take the horses to the beach and ride them in the sea. I’m excited to see how they will react to the water and the beach; I have a strong feeling that most of them will be quite afraid of the water! On Sunday I helped feed and water the horses while Jassu cleaned their stalls, and then I started riding. They had been on the truck for so long that I mostly just stretched them out and let them relax. Then on Monday it was back to their regular workouts. Tuesday was a show day for the young horses. Danny showed in the six-year-old class and had a clear round. Since this was a clear round class, everybody that went clear won a little money. On Wednesday Danny showed again, and once again had a clear round. He’s our little superstar! This was his first opportunity to jump the open water, and he did it like a pro. Thursday is the first show day for the big kids, and it will be busy! Jack is showing in the Gold Tour 1.35m, Ella in the Gold Tour 1.40m, Abigail in the Gold Tour 1.45m Ranking class, and Danny in the young horse final. Athena shows in the Silver Tour 1.40 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A nice way to wrap up this excerpt of my life on the road is to have a fabulous day in the show ring. I just finished showing, and I’m really happy with the results. Warinde B (Ella) won the 1.40 with 70 in the class. Wender (Jack) was 2nd in the 1.35 out of 70 plus. Abigail was 4th in Ranking Grand Prix. The victories were even more special because my mom is here visiting form California this week. She cried when they played the Star Spangled Banner during the awards ceremony. I’m glad she was here to see it. To top off a great first week here, Abigail and I finished up 6th in the Grand Prix out of 64 with 23 in the jump-off. We’ll be here in Spain for two more weeks. Feeling really proud of the horses this week. Let’s see what the next two weeks bring…

erretti redefines the concept of luxury with the timeless charm of its new model, its excellent performance characteristics in terms of navigation, top speed, outstanding technical solutions and the highest safety standards. Equ presents to you this innovation that will capture your interest immediately because of its minutely renovated profile, making it a truly distinctive and sophisticated model. Its exterior shape is characterized by new, aerodynamic elements without precedents: the windows of the three cabins below deck have merged– the master stateroom, guest cabin and the VIP cabin- so, unlike previous models, this setup lets more natural light in.

The simple instruments aboard go hand in hand with absolute comfort and usability, unmistakable hallmarks of the brand, offering solutions that make the dreams of proprietary worldwide reality. A team of architects and designers has been extensively redesigning all the yacht through a detailed study that led to the se-

lection of new materials, new color tones and consequently new colors and an interesting blend of textures resulting in a more brilliant, dynamic and highly refined style. All the furniture is made in Silver Oak, oak wood in a silver gray hue that offers a discret and elegant pattern of stripes. For example in the center of the cabin, a large

allowing a large tender to be stowed on the stern platform rather than on the flybridge or in a garage without the need for a crane. That obviously frees up a generous amount of extra space on the flybridge sundeck, and it also means the engines can be sited right at the stern, in Ferretti’s preferred configuration, coupled to drive gearboxes. The 650 has a top speed of 33 knots (38 mph) with the larger 1150 mhp Caterpillar C18 engines installed, and will cruise at 30 knots for 9 hours on full tanks giving her a range of 270 nm. The standard engines are 1015 mhp Caterpillar C18s, which give a top speed of 30.5 knots and cruising range of 290 nm. ferretti-yachts.com

Silver Oak table is fixed, complemented by a sofa and four free standing chairs. This new project is inspired by the Ferretti 620, one of the best selling lines from which some of the most widely appreciated features have been inherited, such as the waterline or the distribution below deck. Perhaps the most significant feature of the new 650 is also one of the most practical: a lifting stern platform. Designed and built to Ferretti’s famously exacting high standards, the platform lowers into the water a full metre at the press of a button, enabling a tender of up to 3.2 m long to be effortlessly launched and recovered. It’s a beautifully convenient solution to a perennial problem:

ith the most advanced engineering, the most beautiful design and the finest materials, Aston Martin has created the greatest car in its long history and Equ Lifestyle magazine has it for you in this issue. We introduce you to the most impressive and desirable Aston Martin: the Vanquish. This supersport car can easily reach an incredible speed up to 183 mph and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.1 secs. Today, the Vanquish is one of the most technologically advanced cars. With an elegant

and sleek profile, this automotive masterpiece is an icon of the most advanced engineering feats. Its design is overwhelming: it has an inferior splitter in carbon fiber, material that is also used in the side sills and rear diffuser area. And this last zone points to another family member, the Aston Martin One-77 thanks to its curved LED headlights and stylized curves. The heart of this imposing car is a 6-liter 12-cylinder V engine. The resulting horsepower –565 BHP– and staggering strength-to-weight ratio reach very inter-

The bodywork is unique: you can see how the front headlights with very angular shapes make a tribute to the typically grilled flank characteristic of Aston Martin. The chest is made of titanium grids that give a sporty look. The carbon fiber details are in all panels of the car, leading to reduce the overall weight in about 30 kilos, making it much lighter than other models. The Aston Martin Vanquish chassis is made of aluminum united by adhesives derived from aerospace industry while using the Aston Martin VH architecture that achieves high levels of rigidity and strength. Inside are the rather high bridge console

and leather details. And here is a curious manufacturing piece of trivia: dressing the inside of each Vanquish takes about 70 hours as this is fully hand-made. We finish by saying that the Vanquish has a complete security system, so to drive one of this motorized jewels not only do you feel comfortable, but you also feel more protected with the guarantee of supreme quality that Aston Martin offers you. astonmartin.comw

The exterior design of this precious automobile contains prominent symbols of Jaguar, like the hood, which has defined these cars since the 1960s, creating a characteristic trademark. Aerodynamic efficiency is the essence of the F-Type, and this concept is integrated in the fluid form of the body to provide lower levels of elevation and guarantee excellent stability at high speeds. The technology applied to this convertible allows the soft top to fold rapidly, maintaining the lines of this automobile esthetically balanced. Also, the fabric it is made of nowadays is thicker, offering better soundproof and waterproof qualities. That is how Jaguar keeps surprising us with new generations of cars, improving each model with the most innovative techniques to offer you the best car ever. jaguar.com

The ‘A’s’ Have It Ashlee Bond Clarke and Andre Thieme Christen the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping

S

peed. Scope. Guts. Talent. To earn a jewel from the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping, horse and rider alike must have their ‘A’ game on that day. California-girl Ashlee Bond Clarke and native German Andre Thieme were both on the top of their game when they jumped to win two of the richest prizes in the sport.

A ComebACk TAle The tale of Bond Clarke, of Hidden Hills, California, and her fiery chestnut mare Chela LS is somewhat of a Cinderella story. Despite a setback last fall, the pair is destined for greatness. She purchased the coming ten-year-old horse from Simon Nizri last July. A concussion at the Los Angeles National sidelined her in early November, and she admits that just being in the show ring at all was sweet. During the first week of HITS Thermal in January Bond Clarke rode to an “icing on the cake” grand prix win aboard the talented mare. The class was the first return for Bond Clarke and Chela LS. “I was happy just to be back in the tack competing again,” she said. “Considering what happened to me, Thermal was such a positive experience.”

With her equine partner of a lifetime, Cadett 7, now retired, Bond Clarke admits that she and Chela LS are developing a similar relationship. “She has big shoes to fill, but she is beyond careful, naturally fast and super smart. If I get her focused and keep myself in check, she is game for anything.” Photos: Courtesy of of HITS Press: Thermal -Flying Horse Photography, Ocala - ESI Photography

07/04/14 11:05

It was game on for Chela LS and Bond Clarke on March 16th, the date of the first leg of the HITS Triple Crown and the final day of the HITS Thermal Circuit. The pair rode last in an order of go that resembled a ‘who’s who’ of international show jumping with horse and rider accolades throughout the list. Not only did they have the enviable last draw, they went clean. With eight talented teams returning to compete for the top prizes, including Olympians Beezie Madden, Rodrigo Pessoa and Rich Fellers, it was the 2013 Zoetis Million winner Nayel Nassar and Bond Clarke who were last to go. The twenty-something youngsters gave the crowd two jump-off rides to remember. Nassar piloted his own Lordan to a clean and neat round to take the lead right before Bond Clarke entered the ring, putting the speed and stride of Chela LS to the test. Bond Clarke admits that she had to keep her nerves and her emotions in check when entering the ring for the jump-off. She was, however, a picture of poise and control to the thousands of spectators that looked on as she topped a star-studded field to win the historic event. “It has taken some time for that win to sink in,” she said. “It was the biggest track I have ridden on Chela, but she comes out every day wanting to win. It’s been all about finding that partnership and I think we have found it.” “Ashlee and I were joking about going one-two earlier in the week and if there’s anyone I don’t mind losing to, it’s her,” said Nassar after the class. Worth mentioning, a cross-country trip proved well worth the effort for Kirsten Coe of Royal Palm Beach, Florida as she piloted Baronez, owned by Ilan Ferder, Lovsta Stuteri and Tal Milstein to third.

Doubling Down On March 24th Andre Thieme became the second rider in HITS history to win two $1 million grand prix classes and the first to be victorious in the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix at HITS Ocala. After a commanding performance aboard his 10-year-old mare Contanga 3 under the lights of the all-new Ocala Horse Properties Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd, Thieme of Plau am See, returned to Germany $350,000 richer. Thieme also joined the likes of American master McLain Ward, who won the first Zoetis Million

in 2010 with Sapphire, and jumped to a win again in 2012 aboard Antares F. Thieme claimed his first million-dollar victory in 2011 and maintains that his return to familiar territory was a plotted one. “I planned my whole trip to the U.S. around these two $1 million classes,” said Thieme after finishing 19th in the AIG Million. “I wasn’t quite as lucky in California, so I was really hoping that it would work out this time. The pressure was on, but the result was perfect.” Thieme capped the 2013 Ocala Circuit with a win in the $100,000 Sullivan GMC Truck Grand Prix; and he was in the ribbons several times this winter on the road to qualifying for the Great American Million. Kent Farrington, who hails from Wellington, Florida, proved that Bernardo Cabral’s track could be jumped from the fifth spot in the order as he returned first in the jump-off. After finishing 11th in the AIG Million with Amalaya Investments’ Willow, Farrington was determined to climb the ranks in the Great American Million; so he made Thieme work for his win. Thieme was the only double clear round after four jumped off, but one feisty pair still remained. Bond Clarke and Chela LS, a force to be reckoned with as noted above, were again the last to go in a fivehorse jump-off. Certainly riding high from their AIG Million win a week before, Bond Clarke and her exuberant mare were poised for a repeat. “I knew there was a lot of speed coming behind me, so I definitely had to put some pressure on,” Thieme said after watching the start of the jump-off. When Thieme watched a rail fall for Bond Clarke, he let out a cheer of excitement while standing at the in-gate. “I knew she had the speed, but I realized in that moment that I had won the class. Maybe I was a little too loud,” he joked. “I think she realized during the jump-off that she had to give a touch more to really get me, and that’s when her rail came down.” Notably, Coe found herself in the top three again with Baronez to the same spot as in last week’s AIG Million. “It’s really a dream,” she said. “Just to have these $1 million classes is amazing for our sport. Then to have a horse jump clean two weeks in a row is really something special.”

Thieme recalled that when he won the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix in 2011, his goal for the prize was to build his family a home. Three years later, Thieme says that his goals haven’t changed. “I started building the house and it turned out more expensive than I planned, so it’s still going straight to the house,” he concluded with a smile.

on The horizon With the conclusion of the AIG and Great American Millions and one leg remaining in the first-ever Triple Crown of Show Jumping, HITS President and CEO Struzzieri is encouraged by the attention the classes have received. “Horse sport fans flocked to these two events and made the atmosphere electric,” he said. “These were also the strongest fields we have seen in these million dollar classes.”

Embraer Phenom 300 Flying ComFort redeFined

EmbraEr’s work is supportEd by pioneers of aeronautics in Brazil whose work dates back to the early XVIII century. The father of Brazilian aviation, Alberto Santos-Dumont is renown for being the first person to perform a controlled flight in a motor air vehicle in 1898, among several other important achievements. Following the steps of Santos-Dumont, many other great aviation pioneers and entrepreneurs made Embraer an aeronautics leader. Their vision gave way to the development of modern Brazilian aviation industry. The Embraer roots in aviation are strong and deep. They are the third largest airplane manufacturer in the world and a leader in aerospace technology and innovation. Embraer has succesfully delivered thousands of executive, commercial and defense aircrafts in more than 40 years and is currently operating in over 90 countries. The Phenom 300 has been the biggest achievement for Embraer: it can be thought of as the best product with the highest quality that can be rendered in a light aircraft of this size.

Designed in conjunction with the renowned firm BMW Design works, the interior is very elegant and minimalist with clean lines, muted colors and open spaces to give the illusion of a larger space. The major attributes of this innovative design are the windows, larger than those in most mid-size aircraft and placed strategically. Between each seat there is a large oval window with a built-in screen. The 300 is designed to last and to be more

profitable along the way. It is projected to yield 28000 cycles or 35000 hours, equivalent to about 30 years of flying about 1200 hours per year. It is a light airplane with a central hall lit by the oval light concept. Embraer has maximized comfort of the cabin with vast dimensions and minimalist seats that slide toward the center of the room and recline almost entirely creating a cozy place to sleep. It’s the best of the best. embraer.com

Steeplechasing:

An Equestrian Rite of Spring By Pamela Maley

A

s the spring flowers raise their cheery heads, the alluring world of steeplechasing is also blossoming in anticipation of the season. Glad to shed the trappings of winter, horse lovers revel in these rites of spring as they turn out in festive attire with gourmet picnics, to watch skilled jockeys on ultra-fit horses engage in heart-stopping no-holds-barred hurdle races.

SOUTHERN ROOTS The National Steeplechase Association has carded (steeplechasespeak for ‘scheduled’) 19 meets for the 2014 season, with purses totaling more than $5 million. The races follow spring up the east coast, and then move south again in the fall. The season opened with the Aiken (SC) Spring Races on Saturday, March 22, followed a week later by the Carolina Cup in nearby Camden, with sixteen more meets until the final Colonial Cup, again in Camden, on November 15th. The Carolina Cup race meeting is a time honored and well-established South Carolina tradition. As one of the premier social events of the season, the race holds the National Steeplechase Association attendance record of more than 71,000 fans from throughout the southeast. Each of the races has its own long history and special cachet, with the unique flavor of love and admiration for the horse as a common thread. Jonathan Sheppard, steeplechasing’s leading trainer, aptly states, “We all have a passion for the sport. It's long hours, often for very meager rewards. We still keep doing it, so there’s got to be something

that’s holding us all together. And I think that is the animal -- they’re noble beasts. We love them.”

ATTIRE ATTENTION The Aiken races begin with the annual ‘Blossoms and Bow Ties Garden Party Gala’ on the race course the night before, giving a peek into the elegance of this equestrian sport. On race day, the village of shops is a much-anticipated part of the experience along with the tremendous tent parties and tailgating. As steeplechase fans prepared for the Carolina Cup, attention invariably turned to ‘what-to-wear’. Invitations suggest dresses and sunhats for women, and bowties and sport coats for men, calling up images of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Local boutique owners point out “strapless dresses are among the most popular for the Cup, with coral and mint the colors currently in favor.” And, of course, a fabulous hat is a must-have on race day.

THE STEEPLE-TO-STEEPLE CHASE Steeplechasing has its origins in foxhunting, and began in 17th century Ireland, soon spreading to England, and making its way to the United States in the mid-1800s. As the hunting season wound down in the spring, one foxhunter probably challenged another, saying, “My horse can outrun your horse,” and steeplechasing was born. Since church steeples were tall enough to be seen in the distance, horses and riders would race from steeple to steeple, across the countryside and over fences, hedges, ditches, and streams. Even today, many of the steeplechases are closely tied to the local

Hunt Clubs, with members of the Hunt making up the large group of volunteers that it takes to organize the meet. Often there is a time set aside on race day for the Master of Hounds to parade the pack, to the delight of the spectators. Remember the young and striking Elizabeth Taylor in the 1944 movie ‘National Velvet?‘ Her focus in the film was the Grand National Steeplechase, which was first held at Aintree in England in 1839, and is still the international centerpiece of the steeplechasing world. This incredible race, now run at a distance of 4 1/2 miles with 30 towering fences, has always held a special fascination and challenge for Americans. Families bearing such well-known names as DuPont, Mellon, Vanderbilt, Whitney, Widener, Clark, and Phipps have raced horses over fences and continue to do so today. While the beauty and thrills of flat racing are found at tracks in big cities, steeplechasing is a country sport, usually conducted over natural terrain against a lush natural backdrop.

often needed in a flat race, as the horse is actually airborne for about twenty feet over each jump, and must be guided into it accurately. At the Carolina Cup in Camden, the final race of a thrilling 2013 season, two athletic young Irish jockeys, Paddy Young and Darren Nagle, were tied for Leading Rider. And their trainers, Young rode for Sheppard and Nagle for Fisher, were battling it out for Leading Trainer. At the close of the day, Young narrowly edged out Nagle for Leading Rider, and Jonathan Sheppard and Jack Fisher tied for Leading Trainer. Says Paddy, “Some people think of steeplechasing as an extreme sport, very dangerous. But we grew up foxhunting and steeplechasing. We’ve done it all our lives. At the end of the race, though, you will see us pat the horse, maybe rub his ears. That’s our way of saying thank you. It means a lot to us to ask them to do what they do.”

The equine elemenT All steeplechasers are thoroughbreds, and most begin their careers racing on the flat. In order to transition to steeplechasing, the horse must possess the ability to jump fences at a breathtakingly fast pace, and the stamina to carry speed for two or more miles. All sanctioned meets use National Fences, obstacles that consist of a steel frame stuffed with plastic ‘brush,’ with a green canvas roll on the ground on the take-off side. The jumps are 52 inches high (four feet, four inches), and the horse’s legs can ‘brush through’ the top. Steeplechasers jump the fence in stride, allowing them to maintain their speed upon landing, much like human hurdlers in track and field. The other form of steeplechasing is the timber race, in which horses jump over solid rail fences that can reach up to five feet in height. This type of race demands that the horse jump in an arc, unlike the hurdle racers. And because of the nature of the jump, even though the timber is built to break, the danger increases, as hitting the fence can take a lot out of horse and jockey, adding to the heart-pounding apprehension as spectators watch the horses thundering by.

a Fashionably Thrilling Time At most steeplechases, a spectator can stand close to the action, watching the race near the fence, feeling and hearing the energy of horse and rider as they gallop over the jump, usually several at once -- truly a thrill. As the horses approach, an official can often be heard decrying, “Horses on course, horses on course!” to warn spectators to clear the way. Time to plan a country outing. Don your chic sundress and unique headdress, sport coat and khakis, plan an elegant picnic, uncork the wine, and enjoy the pageantry and unsurpassed thrills of steeplechase racing! For a closer look at the magic of steeplechasing: nationalsteeplechase.com

The human elemenT This is a sport in which an enthralling race and an elegant social scene converge. But behind all that, many hours of hard work and skilled training combine to produce the spectacle that is steeplechasing. Late in the 1960s Jonathan Sheppard entered the sport as a trainer for George Strawbridge’s Augustin Stables. To this day, the partnership endures, and year after year he has been the sport’s leading trainer. But another star is rising. Jack Fisher, who in 2013 tied his venerable gentlemanly rival in number of wins, certainly represents the future of the sport. It’s the responsibility of the jockey to help the horse relax and focus on the jump ahead. Steeplechasing requires more control than is

In Memoriam spirits

Carlos Gracida

Equ magazinE honors the memory of a great man, life example and invaluable jewel of the Mexican sport, great model of tenacity and passion, recognized as the best polo player in Mexican history: Carlos Gracida. Carlos started playing when he was only five years old and started competing at the age of ten, reaching a 10-goal handicap at 25. Carlos Gracida was the only player in the history of this sport to win the so called Grand Slam on three occasions; that is, he won the triple crown of Argentinian polo: the Palermo open, Hurlingham and Tortugas championships, as well as the U.S. Open and the British Open Gold Club.

As a coach and master of this sport, he taught great personalities such as the British princes William and Harry, Sylvester Stallone, Constantine II king of Greece or prince Talal of Jordan. Queen Isabel II of England declared that Carlos Gracida was her favorite polo player. Winner of The Player of the Year five times, he remained at the highest level for more than three decades and preserved the maximum degree of 10 goals for 15 years, a feat that earned him respect internationally. This sportsman’s untimely departure has shocked the world of national polo, in which he was recognized as its greatest figure but

also for his passion and work to promote this discipline, in which he won a bronze Olympic medal for Mexico in Paris. Carlos was part of a polo passionate family. His father Guillermo was himself a polo legend in Mexico, his brother –Guillermo, too– has reached the top score of 10 goals and his cousin Roberto is nowadays one of the best of the country. He was recognized in the Polo Hall of Fame in 2012 and will be remembered as an endearing person with a great personality who today becomes a sport legend in Mexico. Rest in peace, Carlos Gracida.
