Jour d’Hermès GLOW FRAGANCE
SINCE 1951 when Edmond Roudnitska created his first fragrance for Hermès, the renowned French house has delighted the world with their unmistakable scents. The elegance Hermès prints in each of their perfumes has become hallmark of luxury perfumes worldwide. For 2013 the brand is honored with the launch of Jour d’Hermès, created by Jean-Claude Ellena, an absolute guarantee of satisfaction and hard work to higher sensory pleasure. As its name dictates, the combination of notes is designed to feel fresh and clean since the moment it touches your skin, the connotation “Jour” carries the idea of a fresh scent, airy, positive and full of light . Its notes are rhubarb, grapefruit and lemon citrus combination, clean and pure, characteristic of Jean-Claude’s nose. At the heart of the fragance, the gardenia flower works its magic, with an intense, elegant and engaging aroma, a true diva among the flowers which summits at a voluptuous, refined and of course feminine perfume.
In the background, the soft notes of vanilla and musk complete the combination of flavors, resulting in a distinctive perfume. To complete this ode to sensuality, the maison has entrusted Pierre Hardy with the design of the bottle and wrapper. Undoubtedly, a delicate piece was achieved, one inspired by the female body in clear, simple and glamorous crystal, topped by a white cap which highlights the golden emblem of Hermès. To the delight of his audience, the house has decided to make this a refillable bottle, so you can enjoy your fragrance at any time and place where there is a boutique brand without having to purchase a new bottle. No doubt, this perfume will become a favorite of the maison, a fragrance that embodies the freshness of spring; Jour d’Hermès is an graceful and sophisticated experience that will envelop your skin, a luminous and sensual floral scent. hermes.com

siness with the incorporation of the loafers to the brand. Thanks to him, these unique moccasins adorned the feet of celebrities such as Clark Gable, John Wayne or Fred Astaire still remains a fashion icon. This year Gucci is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the launch of its famous horsebit loafers. To commemorate this event, the Italian fashion house opened an exhibition at the Museum Gucci in Florence that chronicles the legacy of the moccasin. The exhibition showcases the origins of the shoe as well as portraits of famous from the fifties and sixties wearing them. It also shows how the shoe became part of the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1985. Another way to celebrate the six decades of its iconic loafer was with the introduc-
tion of its new line: 1953, the year that marks the birth of trendsetter par excellence. Frida Giannini, creative director of the brand, has decided to go back to the glamorous origins of this piece and merge technology adding a little creativity, to offer models with new and different materials, prints and colors. “The horsebit moccasin has lived many lives since its inception 60 years ago, gaining an important position in the wardrobe basic for both men and women alike. The reason for the double ring and the equestrian tool bar has been an icon that interlaces Gucci’s unique history with a modern attitude.” said Giannini. The anniversary transcends the Florentine celebrations to the windows of boutiques of the maison worldwide, showing an installation in the form of a cascade of colorful moccasins of the 1953 collection by Giannini.

Watches from
WESTIME LA JOLLA ARE READY FOR HIGH GEAR
LOOK PAST THE SHEER DIFFERENCE IN SCALE, and it is easy to see why mechanical watches and luxury cars often share the same fan base. After all, both are complicated machines, made from hundreds of intricate parts, representing cutting-edge innovation with respect for tradition. Three watch brands in particular pay tribute to their friends in the automotive realm with timepieces that any car lover will covet. Audemars Piguet, Hublot and Richard Mille are available at Westime La Jolla, 1227 Prospect Street, (858) 4592222. Below are three of our favorite automotiveinspired models from these great watchmakers.
2 titanium (1,000 pieces), 18K pink gold (500), and platinum (100). The 44-mm watch features a tachymetre scale around the dial, with blue and red stars between the 12 and 1 positions representing Schumacher’s seven victories for teams Benetton and Ferrari. Additionally, galvanic chronograph counters feature raised frames like the dashboard of a high-performance car, and the Cermet octagonal bezel is secured with eight automotive-style domed and inset nuts. For the first time ever in a Royal Oak Offshore, the date display on this limited edition appears in red. 2. HUBLOT BIG BANG FERRARI RED MAGIC CARBON
1. AUDEMARS PIGUET ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE CHRONOGRAPH MICHAEL SCHUMACHER
With a record seven world championship titles, the most pole positions and points scored in the history of Formula 1, Michael Schumacher is widely regarded as the greatest race car driver of all time. When Audemars Piguet prepared to create a limited edition watch that would bear his name, Schumacher personally worked with AP’s chief artistic officer on the finest design details. The result is a beautiful Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph with subtle automotive touches, available in
Hublot is the official timekeeper and watchmaker of Ferrari, and it produces a series of watches dedicated to the great race car manufacturer from Maranello, Italy. The new Big Bang Ferrari Red Magic Carbon reflects the hallmarks of Ferrari’s famous style: ultra-light forged carbon fiber is used for the 45.5 mm watch case; a red tint is chemically incorporated into the sapphire crystal; and the strap is made from supple schedoni leather stitched onto black rubber. Ferrari fans will also enjoy spotting such subtle design cues as the Ferrari prancing horse emblem applied on the dial; chronograph
3 pushers featuring the hand-lacquered Ferrari logo in red; and an oscillating rotor imitating the shape of a wheel rim. Big Bang Ferrari watches are also available in ceramic, titanium, and gold. 3. RICHARD MILLE RM 036 TOURBILLON G-SENSOR JEAN TODT
The world of automobiles is a constant source of inspiration for Richard Mille, who applies the same R&D processes to the design of his timepieces as are found in Formula 1 race car design. The new RM 036 Tourbillon G-Sensor Jean Todt was developed to offer a tangible solution to road safety problems. Richard Mille teamed with Jean Todt, the head of Formula 1 racing and his charity “FIA Action For Road Safety” on this 15-piece limited edition. The titanium watch incorporates a handwound tourbillon movement that features hours, minutes and seconds combined with a brand new complication: a mechanical G-sensor. This mechanism visually displays the number of Gs accumulated by the wearer during rapid decelerations (think of the force you feel while driving fast around a corner). A scale at 12 o’clock on the dial indicates whether the deceleration is safe (green zone) or critical (red zone) for the driver.

A MAN WITH A LEATHER JACKET IS A MAN WITH A STORY
LIKE MANY WARDROBE staples, the leather jacket was created out of functionality. The first leather flight jackets were bulky, often featuring shearling-lined collars and lapels to protect World War II flyboys from the elements. The leather jacket has since become as essential in fashion as the little black dress, abandoning practical use in favor of a sartorial importance fueled by pop culture and evolving trends. In our first collection, we present our take on those iconic and classic styles. We sought to design the perfect balance between elegance and durability. The result is a beautiful series of 4 distinctive models. Each one starts with the finest natural lambskin. The shades and veins of the lamb make for a look that only real leather can deliver. The different lengths, collars and styles make for a unique addition to any wardrobe. The finishing touch is our orange thread sewed by hand by true artists of the craft. J.L. Rocha jackets and shoes are the result of 3 generations of Mexican heritage. A member of the Rocha family oversees every step of the process. From our family to yours, here is to the beginning of a great adventure. joseluisrocha.com

LONGINES
Global Champions Tour
Top: Awards ceremony at Chantilly 2013 CSI5*.
T
he stars and stripes have waved a few times during the 2013 Longines Global Champions Tour (GCT) with three wins by American riders and seven U.S. top ten finishes in the GCT competitions to date. The tour began in May 2013 and heads toward a culmination in Doha, Quatar in November 2013. With thirteen stops along the way, the GCT not only showcases the highest caliber of show jumping competition, but some of the most fascinating and vibrant spots on the globe.
THE WINNING BEGAN IN WIESBADEN. Laura Kraut and her steadfast mount Cedric galloped to the first U.S. victory of the 2013 GCT in the Wiesbaden 2013 CSIO 5* in Wiesbaden, Germany on May 18, 2013. The starting field of 50 entries vied for the top spot over a course designed by
Frank Rothenberger. With a starting list that mirrored an Olympic games roster, taking the win was no easy feat. “It is Cedric’s fourth win on the Global Tour and I am very proud of him. We have a long way to go, but I am just pleased to start off as strong as I have, “ said Kraut. Edwina Tops-Alexander of Australia rode Cevo Itot du Château to a close second place behind Kraut and Cedric. Missing the mark by only .23 seconds it came down to the wire for the leading ladies of Wiesbaden. Hans-Dieter Dreher of Germany won the third place honor for the home team with his mount Magnus Romeo. Dreher exhibited another clean jump-off round, but crossed the timers a little over a second slower than Tops-Alexander. Set on the Rhine River in Southwest Germany, Wiesbaden is considered one of the oldest spa towns in Europe. The

historic Schlosspark Wiesbaden-Biebrich painted the backdrop of the third leg of GCT competition. A royal residence built in 1702; Schlosspark Wiesbaden-Biebrich has been home to some of the oldest and most traditional horse shows in Europe. Its no wonder the competition brings in nearly 70,000 spectators, and continues to attract some of the best show jumping competition in the world. From Wiesbaden it was on to London and Cannes for the horses and riders of the GCT. Laura Kraut and Cedric put in a top ten finish for the U.S. in London, and Kraut again rode to a top ten finish in Cannes, that time aboard Jubilee d’Ouilly.
TOAST TO CRISTALLO IN MONTE CARLO. Cristallo and American rider Richard Spooner were the stars in Monte Carlo. With the only fault free round in the jump-off, Spooner rode the veteran Cristallo to the top of the forty-six-entry starter list in the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Monaco on June 29, 2013, the sixth leg of the GCT. William Funnell of the United Kingdom had the fastest jump-off time by almost six seconds, but an unfortunate four faults left him with a second place finish aboard his mount Billy Congo. Edwina Tops-Alexander was in the top three again, but this time riding Guccio. The duo had an unlucky 7 faults in the jump-off to leave them with the third place honor in Monte Carlo. Staged among the Port d’Hercule and the Prince’s Palace, this leg of the GCT was the place to be, and be seen. While the VIP area was filled with actors and royalty galore, all eyes were on the top horse and rider combinations in the world, which were again competing to better their position on the GCT ranking list, vying for the bonus at the end of the tour. The captivating and unparalleled Riviera, made famous by its yacht-filled harbor and depiction on the big screen, makes a spectacular setting for competitors, spectators, friends and families to revel in the thrills of GCT show jumping competition.
CORTES C TOOK CHANTILLY BY STORM. American rider Beezie Madden aboard Abigail Wexner’s Cortes C took France by storm on July 20, 2013 in the Chantilly 2013 CSIO 5*. The successful duo bested a starting field of forty-seven horse and rider combinations through two rounds of competition and a jump-off culminating in a faultless effort.
Top: Beezie Madden & Cortes C in Chantilly Middle: Christian Ahlmann & Codex One. Bottom: Laura Kraut & Cedric in Wiesbaden.
"My horse was fantastic…I am in a lucky spot in my career. I have some fantastic horses. It will be a goal to be number one,” said Madden in the press conference, currently ranked in the top three in the world.

German rider Christian Ahlmann, who is currently leading the overall GCT ranking list, finished in second riding Codex One. Ahlmann and Codex One also put in a fault-free effort, however almost two seconds slower then the winners, Madden and Cortes C. No stranger to top show jumping competition, the United Kingdom’s Scott Brash rode Hello Sanctos to the third place finish in Chantilly. In another faultless series of rounds, Brash and Hello Sanctos crossed the timers just behind Ahlmann for the final spot on the podium. The essence of Chantilly, located just north of Paris, is the horse. Fittingly, the fabulous GCT competition is held before the Chateau de Chantilly and the magnificent Grand Stables, built in the 18th century by the grandson of Louis XIV. This mesmerizing backdrop is a perfect blend of beauty, history, and horses, ideal for a worldclass show jumping event. In August it is on to Valkenswaard for the GCT competitors. With only five more stops on the road to the crowning of the winner of the 2013 GCT, German Christian Ahlmann leads the race, however, Luciana Diniz of Portugal and American Laura Kraut trail close behind. An amazing spectacle of the world’s best show jumping, the 2013 Longines Global Champions Tour is also a fascinating sampling of some of the world’s most wonderful cities and destinations. Equ wishes the best of luck to all GCT competitors as they travel towards Doha in November. For those who cannot attend the 2013 Longines Global Champions Tour in person, Eurosport offers live streaming of the events.

He is considered to be one of the most famous and influential designers ever: Tom Ford has an art major in history from University of New York. Of course, that was before he found his true calling: fashion. That’s why he moved to Paris to be the head creative director for Yves Saint-Laurent; then to Milan, where he was the milestone to rescue Gucci, the company that went from losing 30 million a year to earning over 160 in over two years, all thanks to this young American. Ford arrived to Gucci as a women’s apparel designer. He grew on gigantic steps and soon became head design director for the company, assuming responsibility for the creation of every product of the firm, aside from the company image, the publicity campaigns and the stores design. Ford reinvented the shopping experience creating the store/disco; now that trend is long gone. However, after some disagreements with the board directors at Gucci, the Texan packed his bags and said goodbye in 2004. A year later, after his dramatic exit from Gucci, Ford announced the birth of Tom Ford, the brand. Under the wing of his former CEO at Gucci, Domenico de Sole, he decided to triumph and consolidate his name as a prestigious brand. He opened a store at 845 Madison Avenue in New York. Today, this place is considered as the holy land for all of his followers; there, they are surrounded by a magnificent chic decoration, similar to the one he has in his London residence and a second floor with three private lounges where
they can drink champagne as an Italian tailor takes their measurements. In this fashion gallery, Ford works as a guide through an extensive men-only journey through classic fits, diamond cufflinks, ebony frames for shades or flamboyant boots. To place a cherry on top of that pie, Ford launched an exquisite line of perfumes like Private Blend, with a distinctive Azure Lime scent; this Eau de Parfum captures the smooth and glamorous side of life in Mustique, a small “I DON’T WANT island on the Eastern Caribbean. Glenlivet XXV
NEARLY 500 MILLION YEARS AGO, the Scottish Highlands originated from volcanic explosions. Millions of years later, retreating glaciers gouged out the glens with vast rivers of melted snow smoothing the granite. The region now called Glenlivet had been created. A wild, primeval place surrounded by mountains, its location guaranteed its seclusion. In time, the glen as we know it today took shape. Only the icy waters of the River Livet –or “smooth-flowing one”– softened its bleak contours. Nature had created the perfect environment for producing whisky. The Glenlivet XXV is a tribute to the scene of its origin as well as the skill of the craftsmen involved in its creation. With 25 years of aging, the new distillate intense, fruity and floral produces a sublime and intense whiskey of character as powerful as it is stylish. theglenlivet.com

Destination Keeneland!
The Glamorous Fall Racing Season in Lexington
Top: SOLD! At Keeneland Yearling Sale
Wealth from around the World assembles in lexington Rumor has it that there is more wealth represented at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale than at any other place and time in the world. Widely acknowledged as the premier marketplace to buy and sell budding racehorses, this sale - the world’s largest - runs for two weeks. The finest thoroughbred yearlings in the industry are available here, and buyers assemble from every continent to vie for ownership of the next great racehorse. And adding to the intrigue, no one agrees upon, and of course can only speculate, which yearling might be a Triple Crown contender.
a bit of Keeneland history At its inception, Keeneland’s founders envisioned that it would serve as a sales facility as well as a race course. But it wasn’t until rail transportation was restricted during World War II and yearlings were no longer able to travel to Saratoga Springs, that the first sale was held
in 1943 under a tent in the Keeneland paddock. In the years since, Lexington has become to the Thoroughbred industry what Augusta is to golf or Hollywood is to film. Located in the heart of Central Kentucky’s bluegrass region, Keeneland is a rare combination of highstakes commerce, genteel sporting tradition, and remarkable innovations, and truly the pulse point for the racing industry. The property that is now Keeneland was deeded to the Keene family in 1783, and near the turn of the twentieth century, Jack Keene began construction on the Keene homestead. No detail was too small as he built his dream with memories of the architecture that he had fallen in love with during his years as a horse trainer in Russia. Sadly, the Depression hit him hard, and in 1935 he was forced to abandon his quest and sell the partially built mansion with its training track and stables. Purchased by the newly formed Keeneland Association, the mansion was converted to what is still the clubhouse. Today, Keeneland’s land base has grown from 147 acres to a 1,038-acre complex that includes a race course, sales pavilion, and 57 barns.

A THOROUGHBRED YEARLING’S PATH TO KEENELAND The path to Keeneland is a long and arduous one for the young Thoroughbred. Entries are open to all, and following the deadline, the first screening process begins. Each pedigree is reviewed and ranked according to quality. Keeneland then sends out knowledgeable and experienced representatives to visit the best of the yearlings and evaluate them on the basis of conformation, stride, and general health and grace. Finally, the yearlings are ranked from most desirable to least desirable, with the best of the best assigned to the first four days of the sale. These, about 950 in number, will be catalogued in a single book and sold in daytime sessions beginning at noon each day. The remainder of the yearlings will be sold during the second week, in sessions beginning at 10:00 am each day, with two sessions to a catalogue. By the end of the 2012 sale, 3604 yearlings had gone through the pavilion in eleven days. Once catalogued, the yearlings are assigned to a barn and arrive at the sales grounds two to three days prior to their sale date. These young horses will be under constant scrutiny during the days before they enter the pavilion, as buyers from over fifty countries stream past and request a showing, which means that the horse comes out of the stall and is walked around a small oval, under the critical gaze of a potential buyer or buyer’s agent. Those who lead the yearlings for the showings are carefully chosen. They must have a soft hand on the lead shank, and be relaxed yet formal in their demeanor. After a while, their young charges often succumb to the fatigue and tension of days of showing, and the handlers must be adept at helping the horse remain calm and quiet, allowing potential buyers to feel its spine and legs. In addition to being skilled horsemen/women, the handlers must also be the right size: not so tall that they dwarf the yearling, nor so small that the yearling appears ungraceful. In the repository are digital x-rays of all four legs, and an endoscopic examination, placed there as a condition for arrival at the sales grounds, and available for viewing by the veterinarians of potential buyers. While perfect x-rays are not uncommon, they are certainly difficult to accomplish, and much sought-after.
Sheikh Mo, and his brother Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, known as Sheikh Hamdan, have built their own broodmare bands and racing stables in Dubai and around the world. They both have their own successful farms in Lexington: Darley, owned by Sheikh Mo, and Shadwell Farm, owned by Sheikh Hamdan. Each of the Sheikhs brings his own 747 jet to the Bluegrass Airport across the street from Keeneland. The twin planes with the United Arab Emirates logos are a familiar sight parked side by side on the tarmac. Since planes of this size are not cleared by the FAA to land at Bluegrass Airport, each has to pay a hefty parking fee in the form of a fine. British royalty too, is frequently represented at the sale; the queen keeps horses at Will Farish’s Lane’s End Farm in Lexington. The city in all its thoroughbred finery reaches out to entertain its guests with exclusive events at Keeneland for buyers and sellers, a lovely buffet in the clubhouse the first week of the sale, a barbecue at

SHEIKHS, STARS & ROYALTY As one might expect, the September sale at Keeneland is conducted against a backdrop of wealth and glamour, drawing a lionshare of royalty and celebrities. Over the last three decades the two ruling Sheikhs of Dubai have been frequent buyers at the top of the market. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, known at the sales as

Lexington’s restaurants, most notably Debbie Long’s Dudley’s on Short, prepare to welcome sales guests spilling out of Keeneland each evening.
July 18-21, 2013: Keeneland ConCours d’eleganCe - a gathering of exotiC automobiles The galas and glamour begin before the sale. Keeneland presents the Keeneland Concours d’Elegance, a showcase of high-end antique cars beautifully restored and on display while competing for Best of Show, from July 18th - 21st. In close proximity to the juried automobiles, is the Paddock Challenge where hundreds of car enthusiasts from around the region pay a fee to park their sports cars in designated ‘name brand’ paddocks - Alfa Romeos, Cobras, Corvettes, Ferraris, Jaguars, Lotuses, Maseratis, Mini-Coopers, Mustangs, Porsches, and many others - compete to raise money. All profits from the Concours benefit the University of Kentucky Childrens‘ Hospital.
september 10-21, 2013: the september sale The September Sale, held in a state-of-the-art pavilion with plush theater seating for 650, has come a long way since 1943. Adjacent to the pavilion is a 13,000-square-foot walking ring that features a copper, clerestory roof for lighting and ventilation, and rubber pavers for sure-footedness; and there’s a 5,000-square-foot space for the world’s first-ever digital x-ray repository for horses.

As the September Yearling Sale draws to a close, preparation begins for the Fall Race Meet. Coordinated exactly one month before the Breeders‘ Cup Races at the Santa Anita Race Course in California, Keeneland’s opening weekend is filled with Grade I, II, and III stakes races that serve as “prep races” for the Breeders‘ Cup. Named the Fall Stars weekend, chic race-goers will be anything but demure as they cheer on some of the best of racing’s stars. A fine ending to the fall season.

SHOW JUMPING STARS SHINE
Top: For consistency in the 1.60m division, Beezie Madden was awarded the CN North American Championship.
K
nown as North America’s #1 host for fine horse sport, Spruce Meadows is on the calendar for a multitude of show jumpers as well as thousands of spectators each year. As an example, during the first week of the series over 86,000 people walked through the gates, with 36,000 attending on Sunday. Winning came in twos – either two in one day, consecutive days or two years in a tow - for top U.S. riders Madden, Ward, Farrington, Howard and Kessler at the outstanding Spruce Meadows summer series in Calgary, Canada.
MADDEN MAKES IT TWO Elizabeth Madden, known in show jumping circles as Beezie, led the victory gallop in two competitions on two different horses in the International Ring at the National, the first of a series of Spruce Meadows Summer Tournaments. Already a decorated show jumper, including Olympic Gold Medals, forty-nine-year old Madden is having a fantastic year. In the
late spring she won the prestigious Rolex FEI Show Jumping World Cup Finals in Gothenburg, Sweden aboard Abigail Wexner’s Simon. Over the summer season, she split her time between Spruce Meadows and Europe, hopping across the pond to help the Americans earn a close second to Germany in the Nations Cup in Rotterdam_ as well as earning an impressive win at the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix in Chantilly, France riding the Wexner’s Cortes C. In the $35,000 RBC Capital Markets Cup she claimed the victory on Amadora, despite adding a stride to the last jump. “For sure to the last fence I got a little Edward Scissorhands-ish there!” Madden laughed. She won this class last year with another mount, Mademoiselle. The $35,000 ATCO Energy Solutions Cup had a field of 62 competitors, and Madden rode Wrigley to the win. While Madden just started on Wrigley this year, she knows the mare quite well. She described, “Wrigley started very late in her career. She's had a couple of foals. She wasn't even broke to ride until she was five years old. She is a little green for what she's done, but she's game.”

Madden is second in the All-Time Money Won List at Spruce Meadows, and her two wins helped inch her toward first place, currently held by Canadian Olympic Gold medalist Eric Lamaze.
WARD’S WINS KEEP ON COMING As if winning twice in one week weren’t enough for Ward during the first tournament of the 2013 Spruce Meadows season; he made it twice in one day during the third week of competition. McLain Ward got right to business upon his arrival in Calgary for the 2013 Spruce Meadows series of tournaments. During the first day of FEI competition at the ‘National’ Ward took home the top prize in the Enbridge Cup. With a starting field of ninety-nine entries chalked full of the world’s best competitors, it could have been anyone’s time to shine. However, it was Ward who ended up on top with a quick pace of 64.310 seconds and fault free round aboard the Grand Road Partners entry Super Trooper De Ness. Ward made it two for two during the second day of FEI competition at the National with a win in the ATCO Pipelines Cup, but this time aboard Zander, an entry owned by McLain Ward and Grant Road Partners. During the third tournament, Canada One CSI-W4*, Ward upped the ante and won two classes in the same day. First, Ward and Wannahave, owned by The Wannahave Group, sped to a narrow victory in the $33,000 AKITA Drilling Cup. The speedy duo just barely secured the win over young rider Wilton Porter aboard Radio City (Gotham Entreprizes, owner), by 0.078 of a second. Next Ward rode Zander to the win in the $33,000 Cargill Cup. Another speed formatted class, this time with fifty-five entries. Ward commented about his strategy, “Zander’s really coming along well. I didn’t want to run him off his feet today. He has a really big stride and it was a course where a big stride could come in handy in a lot of lines.”
FARRINGTON FLIES TO VICTORY The highlight of the 'National' Tournament was the $400,000 CN Reliability Grand Prix, CSI-W 5*, and it was Kent Farrington (USA) and Uceko who took home the winner's share for the second year in a row. Entering the ring as reigning champions of the competition, Farrington and Uceko, owned by RCG Farm, picked up a quick pace
going to the first jump and never looked back. Although he stands under 16 hands, Farrington said Uceko rides like a “very large horse.” He described, “He actually goes best in big venues like here. He has a massive stride and he's probably the smallest horse in the class, but he has the biggest stride. He's pretty unique like that. He has exceptionally long legs for his body. I think that's why his gallop is so big.” During the Continental CSIO 5* Tournament Farrington and the RCG Farm’s Uceko did it again in the $200,000 CN Performance Grand Prix CSI-W. Farrington blazed an uncatchable trail returning half way through the six-man jump-off. “It was more about sticking to my own strategy (and) using my horse’s strengths, which are his bravery and his great gallop. I just let him open up right from the start and didn’t let up,” stated Farrington about his approach to the jump-off. Farrington’s time was over two seconds faster than the second place Reed Kessler aboard her own Cylana. Farrington is happy with his reliable partner. “Right now in his career, he's basically learned everything there is to learn. Now it's my job as a rider and a horseman to manage his career, to pick the right venues and the right classes to aim him towards so I can make his career last as long as possible. With as much money as there is now in the sport, it's a matter of managing horses so that they can be at their best when it counts,” he said.

HOORAY FOR HOWARD The final day of the Spruce Meadows 'National' Tournament featured the need for speed and stamina, most especially in the $175,000 Nexen Cup Derby. A Derby is a class of a different caliber. Riders attempt to tackle the same difficult and demanding course of 25 obstacles every year, which includes ditches, open water, banks, a grob and a steep hill. With just one rail, Leslie Howard (USA) and Lennox Lewis 2 took their second victory in the $175,000 Nexen Cup Derby. Howard described Lennox Lewis as the quintessential derby horse. “He's
[ August / September ] 77

been in the top of the derbies every year since I've been doing them, probably four or five years,” she said. “He's just a great derby horse. He's easy to ride and he's very brave. He's not hard on himself. He never jumps too exuberantly; he doesn't get too excited about anything. He's just a very steady Eddie. That's a great attribute in a derby horse.” The highlight of the Canada One Tournament, the $100,000 ESSO Challenge 1.60m CSI-W, was an exciting finish for Leslie Howard and Tic Tac, who took the top prize. With 32 entries and a seven horse jump-off, Howard had the prime position as last to go. Last year's ESSO Challenge winners, Ashlee Bond (USA) and Cadett 7, tried to make two in a row but they had four faults and finished fifth. Howard and Tic Tac, owned by Jane Clark, made a very quick turn back from fences two to three and went on to stay smooth and quick. They finished clear and fast for the win. “He's scopey, careful, and getting nicer and nicer to ride all the time. He's a great competitor. When he goes in the ring, he tries harder than he does outside the ring, which is the biggest quality of a show horse. It was just getting to know his moves and he had to know my moves.” With a win today, Howard gained points to qualify for the FEI World Cup Finals. “Obviously I'd love to go. I haven't been in probably 10 years. I'm starting to pack my bags!” she said with a smile.
KESSLER KICKS IT UP After eight second place finishes during the Spruce Meadows Summer Tournaments, it was now nineteen-year-old Kessler’s turn to score her two victories, two days in a row. “All of my horses have been jumping so well. I've been pretty consistent. You can't com-
plain too much, being second is great. But eventually it's a hair disheartening that you can't win one!” she remarked. The skies darkened as the $50,000 Lafarge Cup began and the class continued in driving rain. Only two of the 24 entries were clear, Reed Kessler and Lauren Tisbo, the two riders who competed in a jump-off in the $35,000 PwC Cup, went against each other once again. However, this time it was on their newer mounts. Kessler and Wolf S, owned by Iron Works Partners, drew the unenviable first position in the jump-off. Kessler was riding for that all-important clear round and she did just that. Tisbo and Catharina 9, owned by Tequestrian Farms LLC, were next in. They pulled a rail at jump 10b for four faults and the runner-up position. The following day, horses contested one of the biggest tracks of the summer series, the $200,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup. A test of scope and stamina, the top twelve placings were determined after two rounds. A solid 35 entries competed in the first round, and the top 12 returned for the second round. With only one horse and rider double clean, the winner was decided without a jump-off. Kessler said that her win yesterday helped with her confidence going into today's competition, even though it was on a different horse. Cylana knows when she's a winner too. “She knows when she has won. Cylana is smarter than 90% of humans I have ever met,” Reed laughed. “This feels amazing,” Kessler related. “This is the biggest win of my career so far, (and) it's my first five star win. We have knocked on the door a couple of times with some second places, but it feels great to nail one down.”

A.O.C, LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA The sunny city of Los Angeles awaits your visit to charm you with a restaurant that set the trend of sophisticated small plates. Among soft lighting, high ceilings, friendly and efficient staff, and a friendly atmosphere, you can choose between their long wine bar or the main hall, where chefs work their magic with prime ingredients. This bar with its mainly Mediterranean cuisine is a gift from Suzanne Goin to California. There are about fifty wines by the glass and many more by the bottle, all carefully chosen. An escarole lettuce salad, anchovies and mustard vinaigrette is our recommendation, cod au gratin simply a delicacy.

JEAN GEORGES The Zagat guide can’t be wrong: this restaurant is the jewel of Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s empire. The restaurant offers the very best in fine dining; JeanGeorges presents an exquisitely prepared cuisine, mixing different influences: French, American and Asian, making dishes that have been recognized by the New York Times and three Michelin stars as well. The stunning décor, adorned with large windows overlooking Central Park, was designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen. The service is impeccable, there is a special menu with three fixed-price dishes, and two tasting menus of six plates: the first one consists of the chef’ selected dishes, the other with seasonal ingredients. 1 Central Park West, New York, NY 10023 212-299-3900 jean-georges.com
MENTON BOSTON Named one of the best fine dining restaurants in Boston, Menton is an excellent choice for a demanding palate. The success of this place, no doubt, is the artful blend of French technique and Italian soul of its kitchen, authored by Barbara Lynch. Our recommendation: langoustines with peas and pickled rhubarb. simply delicious! The decoration is dominated by gray, silver and black, accompanied by French linens, German porcelain and Murano glass, radiating genuine elegance. It offers several beautiful spaces to eat, a 60-seat room, the chef’s table with 12 seats and a private dining room for 45 people, ideal spaces for special events.

THE VENETIAN ROOM The architecture of this restaurant is breathtaking: it seems to be an actual European palace; the Venetian Room goes back in time to Renaissance Venice. A giant copper dome will welcome you to this sumptuous restaurant, dark wood furniture makes perfect contrast to the elaborate carpets and crystal chandeliers hanging all around the room. Service is a priority in this place; the waiters will treat you as royalty. You can choose one of the private cabinet and spend a romantic evening with that special person. The food is delicious: you can start with a lobster cream, followed by fillet mignon served with roasted potatoes and truffles in a reduction of red wine; for dessert, enjoy the classic Grand Marnier Soufflé. 8101 World Center Dr, Orlando, FL 32821, 407-238-8060

Eduardo Menezes
Successful show jumper, seller of top horses & family man On a path to international stardom, Brazilian Eduardo Menezes now calls Southern California home. Equ spoke with him in-between one of his many recent grand prix wins and just a few days before his son was born. When did you knoW that you Wanted to become a professional shoW jumper? I was always passionate about horses. I learned to write the word ‘cavalo’ (horse in Portuguese) before I learned to write my name. My father was friends with the General and knew that I loved riding. He told my dad that he would teach me how to ride jumping horses. And so it began… I think I always knew from the day I started jumping that I was in love. I didn’t know about being a professional until later. When I was 14 I told my parents that I was going to be a rider, they were very nice about it. My parents are super supportive. So after I finished high school I went to ride in Belgium. They told me to try it for two years and if I loved it to keep pursuing it. If not, then I could come home.
can you name some of the recent highlights in your career? We’ve sold some great horses– grand prix horses such as Avargo, Semira de Saulieu, Calypso, Barla – to name a few. I’ve had a good year so far – I’ve won four grand prix classes, was second in the $100,000 class and placed in several others. Fortunately, I have a nice group of horses right now, all going well. So I’ll keep working hard at winning! And my wife Leticia and I are about to have our first baby.
hoW did you meet your Wife?
Initially, I spent six months in Belgium. Then I was hired to work with Elisa Fernandez, Neal Shapiro’s wife, at the Monterrey Club in Monterrey, Mexico After two years there, I wanted t go back to Europe, so I worked in France for another two years. When I was twenty-three I returned to Mexico. Soon after I started a business with Enrique Gonzales and after almost nine years we still work together. We have a great relationship. I competed in the states for the first time in 2004. After that season, we would compete for about a month in the states and/or Spruce Meadows almost every year, usually in the summer. In 2010 Carlos Hank, one of our client’s, invited me to come to the states with his family. Enrique and I had already discussed having a part of our business here. The original plan was to come for one year with a good group of competition horses, build up the business here, create more awareness for our sale horses, extend our network. After awhile we realized that things were going well, we were winning and selling, so by winter 2011 we decided to stay in the states.
I met my wife in Mexico City. She is from the same city as me in Brazil – funny isn’t it? We didn’t know each other there.
your career goals? Everything I do is because I want to go to the Olympics. This is something I think about every day when I wake up – this is what I aim for. I competed in the 2011 FEI World Cup Finals, which was a great experience. But to date I’ve not been ready – the moment hasn’t been right. I think now I have a good group of horses and I have a dream that includes the World Equestrian Games in France and the Olympics in my home country. With my results here in the states, I got an invitation from the Brazilian coach to be on a Nations Cup Team for Brazil. I couldn’t go to Bratislava (August 1-4, 2013) because the dates were too close to the birth of our son, so I’m planning to go to Arezzzo and Barcelona (both in September 2013), and then Wellington in the winter of 2014.

Young Riders Rally The NAJYRC – North American Junior / Young Rider Championships is the premier equestrian competition in North America for riders, ages 14-21. Considered a significant stepping stone, many of North America’s finest equestrians who went on to represent their country on Olympic, World Championship and Nations Cup teams got their first taste of International experience at NAJYRC. This year equestrians came from the United States (divided by Zones 1-10), Canada and Mexico, to vie for team and individual FEI medals. Pictured here is a taste of the superb show jumping. In the NAYRC (Young Rider) Team Competition Chloe Reid, Kate Morrison and Catherine Tyree earned a Bronze Medal with only three on their team. Morrison went on to win Bronze in the Individuals. Nine teams started in Round 1 of the NAJC (Junior) Team Competition. The final total of eight faults overall earned Zone 2 (NJ, NY, PA) the Gold Medal. After two rounds Team Mexico tied with Zone 4 (AL, FL, GA, MS, SC, TN), resulting in a jump-off, which Mexico dominated to earn Silver.
