Maggots and blow fly in wound under jaw
4 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
SUMMER 2020
In veterinary text books from 200 years ago, when horses were vitally important to the economy and future of human civilisation, the large majority of the books focussed on the care of the feet and teeth of the horse – as both were considered highly important to the horse’s health at the time! And as we know now, feet and teeth STILL are highly important to both the short and long term health and performance of the horse!
So where else are we seeing movements of “Back to the future”??? Two examples are the use of honey in wound therapy, but also the use of maggots to help effectively heal wounds. There’s been several scientific papers over the past few decades on the use of medicinal maggot therapy in horses, and ALL showed remarkable results of successful outcomes on cases that would have otherwise been difficult to treat. Deep foot infections are especially amenable to maggot therapy because of the difficult access to much of the foot. Other types of problems include cuts to the legs, soft tissue abscesses and musculo-skeletal infections. The medicinal maggots are sourced from human hospitals such as North Shore Hospital in Sydney, where they send out 500-1000 germ free eggs from the green bottle fly, or Lucilia (Phaenicia) sericata, on a piece of sterile, germ free gauze. The gauze can be sutured in place to hold the maggots inside the wound as they hatch. Another layer of gauze is placed over the top to absorb the exudate fluid from the wound. Maggots can be used under casts or bandaged. The maggots feed on the dead tissue over 5-7 days, then leave the wound to develop into an adult fly. In the case of the foot, a shoe or stabilizing device if also used to ensure that the maggots are not squashed as the horse walks around etc. Sometimes other treatment modalities such as antibiotics are also used.

So how do the maggots work? They likely help in several ways: Debridement – removal of the dead, damaged or infected tissue, whilst not invading the healthy normal tissue and this all improves the healing ability of the remaining healthy tissue. An antiseptic effect – where they kill bacteria – especially if they are the true medicinal maggots which are bacteria free! The break down of biofilm which is a layer of sludge in many wounds that houses and protects from antiseptics the lives of many nasty bacteria. This way, they may also help in preventing the development of multi-drug-resistant bacteria (aka super bugs). A direct effect on stimulating the formation of fibrous body tissues and blood vessels, aiding in healing.
What can go wrong? It is important that bleeding has stopped before putting the maggots in, and there is no residual insecticide medication in the wound that may kill the maggots. Occasionally, the horse may get itchy or irritated by the feeling of the maggots crawling around. The maggots, if in the foot, could get squashed and killed as the horse walks, so sometimes a protective shoe or hole in the foot is needed.
If the wound is complicated by problems such as cancers, foreign bodies (wood, metal, glass etc), or dead/damaged bone (sequestrum) or tooth that needs to be physically removed by a veterinary surgeon.
Can we just use maggots that often arrive on wounds from the common blow fly The main risk of using naturally occurring maggots, is that the wound may already have some nasty infection in it, or the natural blow flies and maggots may be carrying a super bug of some kind, for example if they just were feeding on dog poo, before invading the wound etc. There is also speculation that some types of naturally occurring maggots may ingest normal healthy tissues. In humans, there is also the psychological effect on the patient that medicinal maggots are better. But in saying all that, the naturally occurring maggots can sometimes do a great job too and are free! So the next time you see maggots in a wound, maybe don’t be so grossed out and hope that they are doing their magic! About the Author Dr Oliver Liyou is an equine veterinarian based on the North Coast of NSW. He is a horse tragic as well and stands the stock horse stallion Bromac Aladar at his vet clinic EVDS.
E
When don’t they work? The work they do is usually completed within 7 days, and if they don’t work, then sometimes a second or even third batch of maggots is ordered to help complete the job.

Factors to be considered when selecting bedding are availability, cost, cleanness (free from dust and foreign material), effect on stable air quality and on the health of horses and people – because bedding material has a major affect on air quality, dust, ammonia, bacteria and toxins in stables, stalls and arenas.

So many bedding materials available – each with advantages and limitations. Wood-based beddings have inferior fluid and ammonia binding capacity but produce less dust. Straw pellets reduce ammonia levels and paper bedding is more absorbent and has lower aerial ammonia levels than sawdust bedding. Paper-based and wood-shaving bedding have a lower level of microbial contamination than straw and less moisture/urine accumulation than sawdust. Sawdust is less absorbent with more urine pooling on the floor and higher stable ammonia levels. Stable mattresses reduce the amount of airborne moulds. Confusing! Bedding material has been evaluated for properties such as dust production, moisture absorbency, impact upon equine behaviour and airborne contamination. Choice of bedding material is important especially for air quality and respiratory hygiene. Stables and stalls are bedded to absorb urine, moisture and gases and to increase the comfort, health and wellbeing of the horses. Good bedding creates a layer of insulation between the horse and a cold floor, pads the hard surface, prevents bruised and capped knees, elbows, hocks and hips, and helps keep horses clean. It also needs to be easy to handle and have good composting properties.

DON’T BREATHE BEDDING
Air quality is affected by bacteria, fungi, viruses, mites, allergens and airborne particulate matter (APM) – the particles in air that can penetrate the respiratory system and cause harmful effects. The amount of APM in stable and arena air affects the amount of secretions in the windpipe and lungs. The aim of stable management is to keep APM as low as possible. The main sources of APM in horse stables are bedding, feed (forage and concentrated feed), hair, skin and manure – with bedding and feed the major sources. Rolling and crushing grains
SUMMER 2020
increases small particles from 19 to 202% whereas cleaning and sieving reduces small particles. Pelleted and steam-flaked feeds produce very low amounts of small particles and adding oil, water or molasses reduces small particles by up to 90%. Airflow is critical to reducing APM in stables. High, open airy stables reduce the amount of APM in the breathing zone of horses. Horses in enclosed stables with high walls separating the stalls, closed windows and little airflow have 4 x as much mucous in their windpipe. Weather also influences the amount of APM – hot, dry days increase APM and mucus production. High rates of APM and poor ventilation lead to an explosion of APM concentration in the stables. This increases further during sweeping, bringing in bedding and mucking-out. The composition of the APM also changes during mucking-out, with an increase in fungal spores and toxins. Sweeping leads to a 5-fold increase in toxins and APM in the breathing zone of stable workers and horses for several hours. Wearing a mask and taking horses out of the stables, moistening the corridors before sweeping and opening doors and windows, reduces APM. Stable cleaning activities also affect air quality in the riding arena if the two are connected. Connecting doors left open while mucking out and refilling of bedding in horse stalls lead to rise in arena concentration of airborne moulds by 2753% If a riding arena is connected to the stables, the doors should be closed while stables are mucked-out and swept. Riding in arenas also produces large amounts of both small and large particulates. During the canter and gallop horses move up to 1200 litres of air per minute, compared to around 60 litres at rest. This increase in air intake = increased intake of airborne contaminants. Trotting and galloping disperse the highest APM concentrations in the air of the arena. Riding instructors too are affected by air quality and have a significantly higher rate of diagnosis for chronic bronchitis and asthma than the general population – up to 40% of instructors working indoors experience chronic bronchitis, compared to only 26% of outdoor instructors. Crumb rubber from recycled tyres can significantly reduce APM in indoor arenas when applied over the existing sand surface. The effect is the same whether the depth of rubber is 4 or 7.5cm. Rubber flooring, foam flooring, pure sands and moist or wet footing materials generate the lowest concentrations of APM.
is an innovative, effective and safe topical spray for minor skin conditions such as mud fever, greasy heel and thrush. May help with Queensland itch as there is often a bacterial or fungal component. Simply spray directly to the site of infection. No need to remove scabs.
“I meant to message you and give you a big thank you - I got a bottle from you and it’s fantastic! I have tried everything for my sensitive chestnut mare including steroids friom the vet. She’s been struggling with QLD Itch since we moved north, and the area on her chest and around her udder were constant scabs. I really wish I had taken a photo, because in only a few days its gone, not reduced, gone!. Awesome product, thank you!” “This product is awesome, not only is it natural and totally safe, but it actually works...! “Amazing stuff, a must for the tack room”
Wood shavings produce 38% and straw pellets 63% less APM than wheat straw, making them well-suited for horses with allergies, respiratory infections or chronic respiratory disorders or conditions. Bedding material such as hemp or linen shives are often recommended as dust-reduced alternative beddings, but studies have found they produce significantly higher APM than wheat straw, wood shavings, straw pellets and shredded paper/cardboard. PAPER Recycled paper has been investigated for stable bedding. Printed paper (eg newspapers and phone books – if you can find any!) had no effect on heavy metal or trace element toxicity. Paper bedding was also more absorbent and had a lower usage rate compared to straw and wood shavings. The phone book paper bedding was more absorbent, had a cleaner appearance and lower aerial ammonia levels

than the sawdust bedding. Horses housed on phone book paper had a dustier outward appearance, but skin health was not affected. Pelleted newspaper keeps the hair coat cleaner than shavings and is easier to compost. The main advantage of phone book/recycled paper is its high absorbency of urine which allows for easy removal of urine spots and reduced ammonia levels in the stable/stall air – it can however form clumps of ‘paper mache’ and pack into the hooves. WOOD PRODUCTS – wood pellets have several benefits with higher microbial purity and improved endoscopy results when compared to shavings, saw dust, pelleted and chopped wood. Dust-free, untreated pine shavings have some anti-bacterial effects and are resistant to several equine ‘germs’. Different bedding types have different levels of contamination by bacteria that can cause diseases in horses. One of the key aspects of disease control is reducing exposure to pathogens. In the stable this means ‘clean’ bedding. Hygiene and water holding capacity is of particular importance, as excess moisture from urine in the bedding can contribute to foot problems and ammonia. There are some studies dealing with the effects of bedding materials on the behaviour and wellbeing of the horse. Use of any bedding other than straw was associated with a higher incidence of stereotypic activities (wood chewing, weaving, wind-sucking). Time spent lying down doesn’t differ between straw, sawdust, husk or fibre, but re-using bedding reduces lying down and can impact welfare and hygiene. Damp bedding is an ideal medium for survival of several equine diseases – including strangles and fungi that infect the skin and hooves. Pine bedding presented with significantly less bacterial growth when compared to other commonly used equine bedding substrates, including hemp and straw. Pine shavings have the lowest bacterial growth and the highest moisture-holding capacity - absorbing and retaining more urine and for up to 24 hours compared to straw bedding which absorbed urine for only 8 hours. As well as affecting the horse’s
respiratory tract, allergens and other irritants can compromise the horse’s overall performance. Poor quality stable air may reduce exercise tolerance in horses that appear completely normal at rest. We’re always looking for alternate bedding materials that will help to keep stable and stall surfaces dry, pathogen levels low and reduce ammonia levels – all in a cost-effective manner. High ammonia in horse stalls can be a predisposing cause of foal pneumonia, and certain natural defence mechanisms of the horse’ s respiratory system can be inhibited by exposure to ammonia. Foals and horses that spend a lot of time lying down are exposed to much higher levels of ammonia in their breathing zone as they are closer to the ammonia source (urine and manure). Choose the bedding for each horse especially if your horse has a clinical problem, is young or has a wound or skin problem. APM concentration varies widely in forage and bedding according to type and manufacturing process. Ask the manufacturer for details on hygiene, moisture holding capacity and whether it has been ‘treated’ with or contains any chemicals.

Correcting equine facial asymmetry using cranial bone releases Dr. Angelique Barbara M.S., D.C.
Cranial Anatomy The cranium of the horse is made of flat bones that articulate with each other through joints called sutures. These sutures allow the bones to move slightly leading to a slight expansion and contraction as the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) is pumped through the cranium. The movement of these bones is the basis for craniosacral therapy.
Cranial Bone Misalignments The cranial bones can become “jammed” due to trauma/injury or the process of traveling through the birth canal when the horse is born. When the bones shift and become “stuck” in this position, it will lead to decreased movement of the bones as the CSF is pumped through the cranium. This can ultimately lead to symptoms such as head aches, difficulty concentrating, runny eyes or nose, head shaking and other behaviors. Visually, it can be noted as asymmetry in the face.
Re-aligning the Bones The cranial bones can be brought back in to proper alignment using specific craniosacral techniques to release the bones. Chronic misalignments will often take multiple sessions to resolve fully. Most horses will begin to show a decrease in symptoms following the first session.
Looking for Asymmetries A good way to check for asymmetries is to take a picture of the horse’s head when standing directly in front of them. You can then draw a line vertically from the mid section of the top of their head (by the poll) to the middle of their upper lip/nose. Next draw horizontal lines connecting the top of each eye and the top of each nostril.

AFTER
An additional horizontal line at the bottom of the lips can also be drawn. If the lines are all perpendicular to each other (create 90 degree angles) then the horse’s skull is symmetrical. If 90 degree angles are not found, then asymmetry due to shifting of the cranial bones is present.
Checking for Changes After releasing the appropriate cranial bones, you should then take another picture of the horse’s head and re-draw the lines to determine if improvement has been made.
Cranial Bone Releases - 2nd Session The kinesiology tape was left on another 24 hours (48 hours total) and then was removed before the second craniosacral session. During the second session, a sacral and tail release was performed before releasing the cranial bones. The picture above shows the results after the cranial bone releases were performed. Note a drastic improvement in the nasal and lip lines.
Follow up This horse is experiencing a decrease in symptoms and an improvement in attitude. She will continue with monthly craniosacral sessions at this time to further improve facial symmetry, reduce the reoccurrence of symptoms and improve proper function. Special thanks to Mary Beth Nunes on her assistance in performing the primary CST session! Want to learn more about CST and the cranial bone releases? This picture shows the results of drastically improved nasal and lip lines after 48 hours with kinesiology tape removed and the 2nd session of cranial bone releases performed.

Protein in the horse’s diet what you need to know
Photo: Dave Taylor
While total protein is usually easily met (or exceeded) in the average horse, the important amino acids may not be if the diet is predominantly lower quality grass or hay, but this can be solved by careful addition of good quality protein sources.
www.gutzbusta.com.au 14 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
SUMMER 2020
Firstly, we need to understand exactly what protein does in the body. While everyone knows that protein is important for building muscles, it actually has a role in regulating almost every process in the body. Proteins are found in all cells and are the most common, and varied, type of biological molecule. Enzymes, hormones, antibodies, muscle fibres, the lens of the eye, keratin in the hoof and many other substances are all proteins. Proteins can have a regulatory function, such as an enzyme or hormone which regulates a physiological process, or have a structural function, such as keratin or muscle proteins, which provide protection, connection and strength. How can one molecule do so many things? Proteins are made from smaller “building blocks” - the amino acids. There are 20 commonly found amino acids, which have different biochemical properties. Proteins are built by joining anywhere between 100 and several thousand amino acids. The final structure and function of the end protein is determined by which amino acids are used, in what order, and how they interact with each other. Amino acids can attract or repel each other within the chain, causing the protein to fold and twist, which creates different functions in the body. As the body builds each protein from scratch, it is important that we have the right amino acids available. Some of these can actually be produced by the horse, but there 10 that must be in the diet – the essential amino acids. The two most important amino acids to consider in the horses diet as lysine and methionine – they are known as “limiting amino acids”, Approximate Protein Content of because without enough of Common Feedstuffs them, correct proteins cannot Grass hay 10% be built, no matter how much of the other amino acids are Lucerne hay 20% present. Oaten hay 9%
Beet pulp 10% This leads us to the idea of protein quality (and ends the Flaxseed meal 33% biochemistry lesson!). Good Soybean meal 50% quality protein has all 10 Oats 14% essential amino acids, in the Rice bran 15% right proportions to synthesise Vegetable oil 0% all the proteins needed in (data from NRC 2007) the body. Grass, and grass hays, are generally quite low in lysine and methionine, but many common horse feeds such as cereal grains, beet pulp, flaxseed meal and legumes such as lucerne or soybean meal contain higher amounts. Scientific research (NRC) has so far only determined the exact requirements for lysine in the horse, however Dr Juliet Getty recommends a ratio of 3:1 lysine:methionine. Lucerne, flaxseed meal and soybean meals all fall nicely into this balance, and are feeds to consider for adding good quality protein. But what about these percentages of crude protein the feed manufacturers list on the back of the bag? 10, 14, 16% are commonly seen, but the truth is, a mature horse in light work only needs 700g of protein in his diet. This works out to be as low as 6-7% of his total feed intake. As even the lowest quality grass and hays have protein levels around 8%, and lucerne hay around 20%, most horses are consuming more than enough protein. Horses in heavy work need a little more, but this is easily provided by the concentrates they consume to provide additional energy, so there is no need to add high protein feed. Lactating mares need the most of any class of horse, up to 14% of their total intake, which makes sense as they are busy producing all the milk proteins the foal needs EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
If most diets actually contain excess protein – is this a bad thing? Should you be trying to reduce the protein levels in the diet? The short answer is no, but it depends! Generally, excess protein is well tolerated by healthy horses, and the excess amino acids are metabolised into energy sources (this is not a particularly efficient way of producing energy however, so protein should not be fed to increase condition or energy levels). his metabolism occurs in the liver, and excess nitrogen is excreted T through the kidneys – so only horses with liver or kidney problems may experience issues from too much protein. Urination is also increased, which can lead to dehydration if not enough water is provided, and can also create increased ammonia fumes in stabled situations, which can cause respiratory irritation. So while excess protein isn’t usually damaging to the horse, it’s not necessary and may put extra strain on the body.

Protein is one of the most misunderstood topics in the equine nutrition world – does my horse need more protein? Is too much bad? Feed companies do not always help by listing feeds by total protein content by percentage (often listed as CP% - crude protein percent), suggesting a certain percent is needed, or that more is always better. Better understanding this important nutrient requires a brief dip into biochemistry (I know, not everyone’s fave…), but it will be worth your while!

NOURISHING OUR SENIOR HORSES:

SUMMER 2020
Spirit, Strength & Longevity By Amy Snow & Nancy Zidonis As the years go on, our senior horses become dear to our hearts. We have shared so many good times and a few hardships along the way, to be sure. They are special. It might be time to retire them from active duty, but you are not going to let them go. It’s hard to watch their beautiful bones become more visible, the hairs around their muzzle turn grey, and the hitch in their step. The loss of status in the herd can be tough on a oncecommanding presence among his cohorts. The boss mare of younger years takes her demotion to a lower rank pretty hard. Horses often struggle to find their place within the herd, which can dampen their spirits. It’s not easy to see the light go out of their eye when their spirit is broken. Watching their muscle tone diminish and their spine and hip bones become more prominent isn’t fun to see. This once vibrant creature that sailed over jumps with ease will now to be more comfortable as a pasture mate. The good thing is that she is still here!

We all wish for amazing longevity for our special older horses. We want our horses to be among us for as long as they can be. They may not have the vigor of years gone by, but there’s history between us and that makes them special.

Aging is inevitable and yet there are ways you can help your beloved senior horse age gracefully. The more you can support them during this period of their lives, the longer you will have them to love. In Chinese medicine there are caring, gentle methods of nourishing your senior horse’s spirit, strength, and longevity.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Chinese medicine has a lot to offer us in supporting the health and wellbeing of our elder horses. By promoting the harmonious flow of chi, blood and other vital substances within the horse’s body, you can help them through these latter years in comfort. There are specific acupressure points, called “acupoints,” that address and enhance the spirit as your aging horse adjusts to her changing status within the herd. There are acupoints known to increase the flow of chi and blood to nourish and strengthen the horse’s muscles. Having our horses live healthfully and comfortably as they age is the goal, and there are acupoints that can help that happen.
Elder Horse’s Spirit
In Chinese medicine the emotions impact the horse’s entire being. The ancient Chinese saying, “The spirit is housed in the heart and revealed in the eyes,” couldn’t be truer for horses. When we see a horse with dull, absent-looking eyes, we know the animal is suffering. An aging horse is bound to lose status in the herd. The older horse can experience a wide variety of emotions during the adjustment period, from fear and anxiety to resignation and withdrawal. Offer your elder hors an acupressure session that can help calm the spirit, clear the mind, and nourish spirit. EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
17
Strengthening Muscles
Muscle tone and mass decrease with age; that’s the way it is. However, there are acupoints that enhance the circulation of energy and nourishing blood to the horse’s muscles, helping to sustain and build strength even as the horse ages. Two actions must occur to accomplish this. First, the horse’s digestive system must be able to break down the ingested forage into bioavailable nutrients, and second, the horse’s vascular system must be able to circulate nutrient-rich blood to the muscles.
Equine Longevity
Living a long time is one thing. Living a long time in good health is another. We all wish for our senior horses to live long and well. Chinese medicine is known for its attention to longevity. The ancient Chinese doctors knew that longevity is dependent on a robust flow of life-promoting energy (chi), blood, and the circulation and balance of all the vital substances needed to nourish the body. This is a tall order but there are acupoints known to enhance longevity that have been used for thousands of years.
The acupoints selected for strengthening muscles and sustaining muscle tone acupressure session focuses on supporting digestion and blood circulation.

SUMMER 2020
Between current conventional medicine and ancient Chinese medicine, we have the opportunity to enjoy our senior horses longer than ever before. These elders have nourished our lives so it feels good to offer them acupressure sessions that help them feel their best. We know our caring nourishes us both.

THE REAL CAUSE OF
LAMINITIS The year 2020 will be marked by what we all now know as the Global Pandemic of Covid-19. It is the year that many Australians came out of long-term drought and their horses, for the first time in years, have serious cases of laminitis. Those accustomed to dealing with sensitive horses are already on watch, locking up their horses and working hard to ensure that their beloved horses are safe from the dangers of fresh grasses! Over the years I have helped many owners design diets that prevent laminitis, as well as help thousands of owners rehabilitate their horses from serious chronic debilitating founder. My understanding of the process of laminitis, its pathogenesis and management has evolved, not only due to my direct experience in practice, but also as more research has come to the fore. Many of my suggestions have over the years challenged commonly held practices, which are now becoming more widely accepted. For example, I have never agreed with the practice of feeding out lucerne hay as a good feed for the laminitic horse or pony. Studies are now confirming this rationale. I always remember my vet (a good friend and mentor of mine from when I was very young!) saying to “watch him!” as the best advice for prevention. But what was I watching for?! Thankfully, now I know! It is my experience now that EVERY horse or pony, in varying degrees, is susceptible to laminitis. Watching your horse for early signs is very important!
The early warning signs are: • Weepy Eye - every case • Sluggish - every case • Hard, engorged crest (not in every case) • Overweight and fat pads (not in every case) • ‘Sooky’ behaviour - every case • Sensitive to walk on hard ground - every case • Reluctant to stride out on the arena • Irregularity of stride – every case • Shifts weight – back to front, rests back feet, front feet • Mild lameness on one side - every case • Gets worse after a hard run or work on the arena - every case • Lame on a circle – every case • Laying down for short periods more frequently • Heat in feet - every case

Scientific research for the presence of oedema in horses with laminitis A Scottish researcher named Susan Kempson was one of the first to identify a new theory of the initial event in the pathogenesis of laminitis. Up until the presentation of Susan’s research it was assumed that laminitis was caused by the restriction of blood to the laminae by the AVA’s (AVA’s are vessels that connect an artery to a vein and act as shunts to bypass the capillary bed). Susan’s theory proposes that the primary event in Laminitis is actually the formation of Oedema with in the foot. This occurs when excess fluid accumulates in the extra cellular spaces of the tissue, due to either abnormal leakage or fluid from plasma (like a systemic inflammatory response) to the interstitial spaces, or when there is failure for the lymphatic system to return fluid from these spaces back to the blood. Image of horse with laminitis
Image of horse with pedal bone penetration
But what causes this increased permeability? • Toxins • Immune reactions • Bacterial infections • Vitamin C deficiency • Trauma • Mineral-corticoid excess • Acute kidney failure • Liver disease causing a decrease in plasma proteins. • Gut problems – worm damage and chemical use causing leaky gut syndrome
Treatment program There will be in every case of laminitis the need to get rid of the cause (toxin) and help restore normality to the GIT and the metabolism.

This involves: • Locking up the horse from fresh green grass • Feeding as per my recommended diet • Feeding herbs to detox the system (McDowells Infect-a-clear) • Supporting gut health (McDowells Equigesta-Pre) • Natural Pain relief and moving Oedema (McDowells Alleviate) • Regular hoof care (bare foot is best) + McDowells Hoof Heal oil • Deep bedding for standing • and if exercising your horse, do so in sand arenas or on grass. Conditions like Insulin Resistance and Cushing’s can also be supported with herbs. I suggest extra support with specific formulations like McDowells Metabolic-S and McDowells Cushing-S to help with endocrine balance and improve the horses ability to regulate its own blood sugar. Usually in 10 days you will see a marked improvement if you have caught the condition in time. If you have been dealing with a chronic long-term case then it is best to discuss with me the rehabilitation process for the metabolism in depth. About the Author – Catherine McDowell Medicine of Mother Nature… I was first introduced to the concept of Herbal Lore when I was very young. I think one of the earliest influences I can remember was from my grandparents, who were very traditional Bathurst farmers of the well known Cox family. My grandfather had the “people’s home library” which was a compendium of all kinds of home cures. Herbal Medicine is, at its core, studying nature and the humanities. It’s about observing our diet, our environment and how we respond. Keeping a balance is difficult in the modern era as we are no longer interacting with our environment in the same way as we may have done even as little as a 100 years ago. As a Dorothy Hall graduate working along side the well known Robert McDowell for many years and furthering my education with Dennis Stewart, I have developed my own unique application of herbal remedies. Working primarily with animals (Horses and Dogs) has been the most rewarding. Having seen herbs work so well in so many cases has proven to me time and again the under-utilised power of herbal medicine. It is heartening to see now Vets, and some Medical Doctors seeing the traditional application of herbs as useful. My comprehensive service includes free animal consultations 24/7 via my web site, and face to face consultation at 61 Corporation Avenue, Bathurst NSW 2795.

Shattered by 2020? The Happiness Trap author, Dr Russ Harris, has some essential tips for rebounding in the New Year. For many 2020 has been a year in which the best made plans were laid waste, sometimes with devastating personal and professional consequences,, The question is; once reality has ‘slapped’ us, what can we do to rebound, grieve our losses and begin making a meaningful recovery? Dr Russ Harris is one of Australia’s most respected self-help authors. His book The Happiness Trap has sold more than a million copies around the world and been translated into more than 30 languages. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, having trained over 40,000 health practitioners in the approach. He has worked with The World Health Organisation helping refugees to come to terms with the devastating circumstances in which they find themselves. This work was repurposed by The WHO earlier this year to help people come to terms with COVID 19. It is fair to say then that Russ is well placed to offer useful advice on how to pick up the shattered pieces and move into the new year with a sense of purpose, no matter how much of a blow this past few months has dealt us. Russ has just released a new edition of his book The Reality Slap, which is full of practical advice for how to cope well and find meaning and fulfilment in the face of loss and crisis. The content draws heavily on the work he did for the World Health Organisation, which has been proven to be effective, even in such extreme cases as those who left everything behind. Of course, global pandemic aside. ‘reality slaps’ can take many forms, from the death of a loved one or loss of a job to a serious illness, or the ending of a significant relationship. And whatever form it takes, it hurts! In such circumstances, the tools we use to cope with everyday disappointments are just not enough to get us through.

The Complete Pain Management and Tissue Repair System When cells are damaged through injury, the body’s biocurrent is disrupted in that area, preventing the production of ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate), critical for all healthy cellular functions, including repair. ATP is the pump that drives this vital process.
Kick starts tissue repair
Reduces inflammation
Manages pain
ArcEquine introduces a biocurrent, triggering the body to start the repair at a time it is least able to do so. The horse feels absolutely no sensation.
A quicker repair means a stronger repair, less chance of an injury re-occurring and less scarring through working fast with softer tissue.
ArcEquine manages pain by repairing tissue, this reduces inflammation, which is how the body perceives pain. A drug free, non-invasive and wearable way.
ArcEquine has become an essential part of our daily routine. All my horses are top Athletes and ArcEquine helps them to recover quicker from competition runs, training sessions, long distance travel as well as improving their overall wellbeing. My team and I wouldn’t be without it. Andrew Hoy

The Inside Becomes the Outside
I have been looking into the power of beliefs. What I am observing is that whatever a person believes, they somehow make reality. This is especially true when working with horses. If you feel you cannot do something with a horse, then really, it is best to not even begin until you have moved the cannot. Our intention is a powerful thing, and if we believe we cannot do something then we are right. The horses can always pick up on what we are thinking, sometimes I think they can read minds! So, if we are about to do something we are not sure of, before we commence, we need to change our thinking to ‘I can’. This is a hugely important thing for both the horse and the person. We are much more likely to succeed if we do this. An example of this is something I saw with a person picking up a horse’s hooves recently. The woman was sure she could not do this, and when she went to pick up the hoof her hand was stiff and controlling to which the horse objected to and reacted by kicking out. This of course scared her and validated her fear of picking up the hoof. I then went to the same hoof and picked it up knowing that I can, my hand and arm were soft. The horse repeated the kick out with me, but I did not fight, just moved with the hoof then calmly brought it back to where I wanted. The horse felt the change in energy immediately and stood there with the hoof in my hand easily. The woman’s ‘I cannot’ became a reality and so did mine. We talked about changing her mental belief which allowed her to go back to the hoof and pick it up with confidence and a relaxed hand. The horse obliged without a problem. This is not just about skill. Horses most definitely perceive our thoughts, energy and intentions, their empathy skills are huge compared to ours. A horse will fit into whatever we believe. This idea can be confronting. It means we must take responsibility for what is happening. We prefer to blame others for our problems and issues, the government, our parents, our horse…. It is so much more comfortable if someone else is at fault. Then we can complain about them and try to change them, but we can remain the same. When we take responsibility for our own reality, we must do some work, on ourselves, and make changes. This is uncomfortable on several fronts. First it means admitting that what we are currently doing may not be the best way, then we must think about and research alternatives and finally we change what we are doing and how we do it. The last step is the hardest for many. All animals are creatures of habit and we are no exception. It can be extremely hard to change things we do in the external world, and even harder to change what is on the inside. But this is what is needed to move forward with horses. There is something about horses that pushes peoples buttons, makes them look at parts of themselves they would rather not. But at the end of the day, if we have a horse in the paddock then some part of us has chosen this journey. The take home message is to look at your beliefs and see if they are limiting you. If they are then maybe pull them out and see if you want to keep them. If you choose to keep them that is your call, but if you choose to grow and change, you will find your horses doing the same right along beside you.

THE ULTIMATE PADDOCK CLEANER The Paddock Blade was invented in the United Kingdom in 2013 to help ease the back-breaking task of keeping paddocks clean and parasite free. A single horse manures as much as 20kg per day, that’s 140kg of poo a week! As much as we love our fourlegged friends, they certainly make it hard work picking up after them. While a lot of people continue to slave after their horses with a rake and wheelbarrow, more and more horse-owners are investing in a paddock cleaner to collect the manure for them, saving their spare time, their backs, and ultimately their bank accounts. There are a few different tools to make paddock cleaning easy, but the easiest and most cost-effective cleaner is the
Paddock Blade, a towable manure collector. Paddock Blade is a steel tray with universal tow loop so that it can be towed behind a car, ATV or ride-on mower. It has been specifically designed to collect manure while being towed, at the same time coping with the rough and uneven ground of a horse paddock. The Paddock Blade paddock cleaner holds about three times as much as your large, 100L wheelbarrow, so depending on the size of your paddocks you can have the job done from start to finish in 10-
30 minutes instead of 2-3 hours. The design was brought to Australia by Jake Fowler in 2016 and it has quickly become Australia’s most popular paddock cleaner. Breeders and trainers and operators of agistment and hobby farms have declared their delight in the time and effort they save by using Paddock Blade. Paddock Blade Australia is extremely proud to announce our newest sponsor, awardwinning horsemanship master, Guy McLean. Paddock Blade
Australia takes pride in contributing to the creation of a close-knit, professional and uplifting equestrian community full of individuals who have a strong love for horses. Our new relationship with Guy McLean is just another way for us to ensure the creation and support of such a community. Guy believes in always placing the horse before the man; he places a strong emphasis on listening to what the horse needs and wants. Quite simply, Guy’s approach to horsemanship is to treat your horse the way you want to be treated. “I have based my entire career on quality, common sense, and durability and I see these exact same attributes in the ‘Paddock Blade’.”

New Sports Romance Novel Shines a Light on Royalty and Polo For lovers of horses, relatable characters and hope! We all witnessed the fairy tale romance of Prince Frederick and Australia’s very own Mary, but what will happen when a disenchanted prince meets Frankie, a stubborn, strong Australian farmgirl? Newly released novel, Get Off Your High Horse, is a royal romance with a difference. Readers are given a glimpse into royal life through Crown Prince Sebastian, and are taken on a unique journey into the sport of polo in Australia. The mixture of horses, Australian culture and history allows the author, Cynthia Terelst, to share her love of horses, and Australia, with the world. The polo setting in Australia is different to that around the world, evolving from farmers playing the game in their dusty paddocks in Victoria. It is simplified and much more intimate. The spectators can get a close up look at the players and the horses. Players come from around the world to participate, even rich patrons and royalty, as depicted in Get Off Your High Horse. Overall, it is no longer an exclusive game and is truly a spectator sport. Get Off Your High Horse allows readers to get a glimpse of the workings of the game, not only on game day but at the stables as well. In Get Off Your High Horse, Terelst embraces her writing motto share a little bit of history, some Australian scenery and a whole lotta love, by acquainting readers with Aboriginal history. She’s found that overseas readers are often surprised about this part of Australia’s past. Terelst also shines a light on her hometown of Maryborough when the characters visit the birthplace of P.L. Travers, author of Mary Poppins. “Romance readers are voracious. And they never want to read the same thing twice. For that reason, I like to put little twists into the everyday romance tropes,” Terelst says. “In Get Off Your High Horse, readers go from being immersed in the sport of kings to Australian farm life – two vastly different lifestyles. And just for fun, I add a little angst and humour.” Cynthia Terelst is an emerging Australian author based in regional Queensland, where the sun shines 283 days a year. She is a project officer by day and a writer by night. Cynthia’s mother introduced her to a lifelong love of reading, for which she will be forever grateful. With love for the written word instilled in her, she wrote her first picture book at the age of 8, about her lost cat, Fluffy.
Get Off Your High Horse is available in both eBook and paperback (8x5, 276 pages, ISBN: 978-0-6487294-2-6) through Amazon. Aust - https://www.amazon.com.au/ dp/B089Y1NDN9
