NEW YORK CITY IS KNOWN FOR ITS YOUNG, VIBRANT, FAST-PACED LIFESTYLE. THIS PROJECT INCLUDED A SITE VISIT TO MANHATTAN, WHICH PROVED TO BE THE MOST VALUABLE DESIGN TOOL. WHEN DESIGNING AN ENTIRE CITY BLOCK, IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE CITY IN WHICH THE BLOCK IS PLACED.

THE AREA SURROUNDING THIS RESIDENTIAL AND EDUCATIONAL BLOCK IS LOCATED IS VERY YOUNG AND UPCOMING, SO MY PARTNER AND I TOOK WHAT THE AREA HAD TO OFFER INTO ACCOUNT AND CREATED A SPACE THAT OFFERED WITH WHAT IT LACKED.
ZONING LAWS ALSO
HAD TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT AND THUS THE STRONG UNIFORMLY HEIGHTENED STREET WALL WAS BORN.
THE NODES OF THE PROJECT
WERE DISTRIBUTED AND EACH GIVEN A DIFFERENT MATERIALITY AND LANGUAGE OF CONSTRUCTION TO ESTALISH SEPARATE ENTITIES.

THE
UNIFICATION OF THE PROJECT IS THE CENTRAL COURTYARD WHICH OF-
FERS AMPLE EXTERIOR SPACE TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE BLOCK.
THERE ARE
THREE PLAZAS CORRELATING TO MAIN ENTRIES FROM THE STREET THAT ARE DISTINGUISHED IN LANDSCAPING AND ELEVATION.
THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
HAS A MESH SKIN TO AFFORD STUDENTS PRIVACY WHILE ACCESSING THE MOST DAYLIGHT DURING SCHOOL OPERATING HOURS.
ADJACENT TO THE SCHOOL IS
A PLANETARIUM THAT IS CONSTRUCTED OF THE SAME SPYDER CONNECTION GLASS CURTAIN WALL AS THE SCHOOL, BUT IT IS NOT COVERED BY THE SKIN TO SET IT APART. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY THROUGH GATHERING SPACES, LIGHT, AND ACCESSIBLE CIRCULATION.

TOWER ALLOWS FOR AN EXPLORATION OF VERTI-
CALITY, ANCHORAGE, AND INTERSECTION.
THE PRO-
GRAM CONSISTS OF A MUSIC SCHOOL THAT INCLUDES PRACTICE ROOMS, LIBRARIES, AND CONCERT HALLS.
DISTRIBUTION
OF THE PROGRAM THROUGHOUT THE
VERTICAL ARMATURE IS ONE EXAMPLE OF THE USE OF ANCHORAGE IN THE PROJECT.
THE
PROGRAMMATIC
PIECES ARE NESTLED INTO THE ARMATURE AND USE IT AS AN ANCHOR OF VERTICAL CIRCULATION.
HIERAR-
CHY OF THE SPACES WORKS RADIALLY RATHER THAN LINEARLY, WITH THE LARGER SPACES NESTLED INTO THE MIDPOINT.
REPEATED JOINT STYLE UNIFIES THE
PROJECT AND REFLECTS A RHYTHM THAT WAS SET THROUGH EARLIER DIAGRAMMATIC EXPLORATION.

YEAR 3| REDISTRIBUTION FLORIDIAN LANDSCAPE IS THE CONTEXT OF THIS PROJECT. THE SITE IS THE LARGEST FACTOR ALONG WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LANGUAGE FOR HOW THE GROUND AND CONSTRUCT MEET AND INTERACT.
THE IDEA BEHIND
REDISTRIBUTION IS THAT THE CONSTRUCT CAN EXIST WITHOUT DESTROYING THE ESTABLISHED NATURE THERE.
THIS
PROJECT IS SUSPENDED ABOVE THE GROUND WITH
STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS METICULOUSLY AND ARTFULLY PENETRATING THE GROUND.

A WILDERNESS RESEARCH COMPLEX, THE PROGRAM INCLUDES RESIDENCES AND CLASSROOMS, WHILE THE CIVIC SIDE INCLUDES EXHIBITION SPACES AND MUSEUMS TO DISPLAY THE RESEARCH. INTERCONNECTION BETWEEN THESE PROGRAMS WAS KEY IN DEVELOPING A COHESIVE PROJECT.
THE
PROJECT SEEKS TO
BECOME ONE WITH THE LANDSCAPE, NOT CHANGING IT BUT MERELY REDISTRIBUTING IT.

THE
PROGRAM IS ABLE TO BE COMPLETELY SUSPENDED AND YET STILL
CONNECTED THROUGH THE USE OF RAMPS AND WALKWAYS.
ONE OF THE EFFORTS OF THE PROJECT WAS TO UTILIZE A UNIVERSAL DESIGN MENTALITY AND CREATE A PROJECT THAT WAS EQUALLY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL PEOPLE. UNIVERSAL DESIGN VARIES FROM ACCESSIBILITY BECAUSE IT IS A CONSCIOUS PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS FROM THE BEGINNING, SEEKING TO DESIGN WITHOUT EXCLUSIONS OR EXCEPTIONS. THEREFORE, THIS PROJECT USES RAMPS RATHER THAN STAIRS WITH ARTICULATED PASSAGEWAYS SO THAT ALL THE OCCUPANTS ARE EXPERIENCING THE PROJECT EQUALLY.

INTERVENTION MUST ESTABLISH CONNECTIONS
AND ENTRIES WITHOUT CONTEXTUAL INFORMANTS.
STUDIES
LEADING TO
PROJECT LOOKED AT THE PATTERNS OF SAND COLLECTION AND DISPERSION THROUGH A SERIES OF WATERCOLORS. FORM OF THE DESERT COMPLEX.
THESE
OBSERVATIONS LED TO THE
JOINTS AND CONSTRUCTION FLOWS FROM
ONE MOMENT TO ANOTHER, WHILE ENVELOPING A COURTYARD THAT IS PROTECTED FROM THE WIND AND SAND.
THE CONSTRUCTION FOCUSES ON
LIGHT AND MANIPULATING IT IN A CONDITION WHERE SUNLIGHT IS NOT SCARCE.

ADVANCED DIGITAL PROJECT FOCUSES ON USING THE TOOLS OF
RHINO AND GRASSHOPPER IN CREATING A PAVILION INTERVENTION FOR THE
UNIVERSITY
OF
FLORIDA ARCHITECTURE
BUILDING.
THE
TRELLIS
INTERVENTION USES AN INTERLOCKING WAFFLING CONSTRUCTION THAT ALLOWS FOR EITHER LIGHT OR SHADE, DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF DAY.
THE
UPPER TRELLIS IS A GARDEN THAT HAS VEGETATION GROWING IN
SOME OF THE WAFFLE SQUARES TO PROVIDE THE BUILDING WITH GREENERY AND FRESH AIR.

YEAR 2| MAYAN MERGENCE OF ASTRONOMY AND ARCHITECTURE THE CONTEXT FOR THIS PROJECT IS THE MAYAN RUINS OF UXMAL, A ONCE THRIVING METROPOLIS OF COMMERCE AND RESEARCH. UXMAL RUINS WERE DESIGNED WITH A HIGHER PURPOSE. THIS PROJECT STUDIED ONE FORMER STRUCTURE IN PARTICULAR CALLED THE GOVERNOR’S PALACE. ITS ORIENTATION ALLOWED FOR A ONCE IN EVERY EIGHT YEARS VIEW OF VENUS. AN INTERVENTION WAS DESIGNED TO CREATE SPACES OF VARYING PRIVACY THAT TOOK CUES FROM THE DETAIL ORIENTED DESIGN OF THE MAYANS.

THIS DIAGRAMMATIC STUDY CHALLENGES NOTIONS OF SPACE AND BOUNDARY THROUGH A MULTI-POINT PERSPECTIVE. THIS PERSPECTIVAL WAS DELINEATED FROM SIX IMAGES OF VARIOUS SPACES AROUND CAMPUS. THE IMAGES ARE MERELY CONTEXTUAL INDICATORS THAT ANCHOR THE VARYING SHIFTS AND INTERSECTIONS. SPACES ARE SEPARATE AND YET CONNECTED THROUGH TECTONIC ELEMENTS BREAKING THROUGH BOUNDARIES.

SUMMER|HISTORIC REVIEW BOARD INTERNSHIP: PINE GARDENS BROUCHURE THIS PROJECT WAS DONE UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF SARAH WARD AT THE HISTORIC REVIEW BOARD OF SAVANNAH. PINE GARDENS IS A SMALL NEIGHBORHOOD THAT IS SEEKING HISTORIC DISTRICT RECOGNITION.

INCLUDES HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD, ALONG WITH A DRIVING TOUR TO ATTRACT INTEREST.

Architectural Examples The Pine Gardens community is an early example of a subdivision, much like the ones we know today; however, the architectural variation within the house type is something we do not see much of anymore. The neighborhood exhibits the "Victory Cottage" style that was prominent in WWII era construction. Each house, though nestled in a largely uniform residential row, has its own character.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD WAS ORIGINALLY CONSTRUCTED AS HOUSING FOR WWII SHIPBUILDERS. THE HOMES ARE SMALL VICTORY COTTAGE STYLE HOMES WITH THREE MAIN VARIANTS TO THE DESIGN OF THE ENTRY (PICTURED BELOW).
FOUR OF THE COMMUNITY’S LANDMARKS WERE CHOSEN TO BE
HIGHLIGHTED ON THE TOUR: TWO CHURCHES, A SCHOOL, AND A FIRE STATION (PICTURED RIGHT).
THE
PROJECT CONCLUDED WITH A PRESS INTERVIEW AND INFORMATION FAIR TO ATTRACT PUBLIC
INTEREST, WHERE THE BROCHURE WAS FEATURED AS A MAIN INFORMATIONAL SOURCE.

LIGHT IS ELEMENTAL AND ELEGANT. THIS LAMP REVERBERATES THOSE QUALITIES WITH SIMPLE MATERIALS THAT ALLOW IT TO ILLUMINATE WITH SOFT DIFFUSED LIGHT, THE GOAL BEING TO CREATE A QUALITY THAT IS AS ELEMENTAL AND ELEGANT AS LIGHT ITSELF. PICTURED LEFT IS AN ATMOSPHERE THAT THE LAMP WAS INSPIRED BY AND COULD POSSIBLY OCCUPY.

FIRM: DAWSON ARCHITECTS AT DAWSON ARCHITECTS, I HELD A THREE SUMMER LONG INTERNSHIP WHERE I WAS GIVEN A VARIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND DEVELOP MY PROFESSIONAL SKILL. THE SAMPLED PROJECTS HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLE OF MANY PROJECTS I WAS ABLE TO WORK ON UNDER THE OTHER DESIGNERS IN THE FIRM. AT BELFORD’S, I WAS TASKED WITH MEASURING, PHOTOGRAPHING, AND DRAWING DETAILED AS-BUILTS OF THE EXISTING

BUILDING THAT THE ARCHITECTS WOULD USE AS THEY DEVELOPED THEIR DESIGNS.
EACH SUMMER, I WOULD MEASURE 6-8 BUILDINGS AND DELIVER 4-6 AS-BUILTS. THIS WAS GREAT TRAINING IN BOTH AUTOCAD AND UNDERSTANDING THE PROFESSIONAL PROCESS. SITE PLANS WERE MY MAIN CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCAD DORM PROJECT. IN ORDER TO CREATE THIS SITE PLAN, I HAD TO COMMUNICATE WITH MY COWORKERS TO PULL TOGETHER A COHESIVE SITE PLAN BETWEEN ALL THE ARCHITECTS WORKING ON THE PROJECT. THE GROOVER RESIDENCE WAS THE FIRST PROJECT THAT I DID INDEPENDENTLY AT THE FIRM. MY RESPONSIBILITIES WERE TO MEET WITH THE CLIENT, MEASURE THE EXISTING HOUSE AND PROVIDE FLOOR PLANS AND ELEVATIONS.

VERTICAL ASSEMBLAGE IS NESTLED ALONGSIDE THE NEW YORK CITY HIGH LINE PARK AND DRAWS MUCH OF ITS INSPIRATION FROM THE ELEVATED PARK. THE MATERIALITY AND CONTEXTUAL APPROPRIATENESS WERE IMPORTANT FACTORS IN THE DESIGN OF THIS HOTEL.
THE FORM ALLOWS FOR MAXIMUM VIEWS WHILE THE
LOUVERED SKIN STILL AFFORDS OCCUPANTS PRIVACY. THE DESIGN REACTS BOTH TO THE PARK AND TO THE STREET IN AN ARTFUL WAY.

PERSONAL STATEMENT ARCHITECTURE IS THE BEAUTIFUL RESULT OF THE DESIGN PROCESS BOLSTERED WITH HARD WORK. IT IS A CREATIVE PROFESSION THAT’S THIS PROFESSION AND THIS MAJOR HAVE GIVEN ME A CRITICAL APPRECIATION FOR MY SURROUNDINGS AND PROVIDED ME WITH A CONSTRUCTIVE, ARTISTIC OUTLET FOR BENEFITING SOCIETY. MY PASSION FOR ARCHITECTURE HAS BEEN REALIZED THROUGH MY EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MY PERSONAL TRAITS.
PRODUCT NOT ONLY EVOKES EMOTION, BUT PROFITS THE PUBLIC AS WELL.
MY EDUCATION IN DESIGN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA HAS BEEN RIGOROUS AND EYE OPENING. EVERY PRECONCEIVED NOTION I HAD ABOUT THE SPATIAL DESIGN PROCESS WAS TRANSFORMED INTO AN ACUTE UNDERSTANDING OF DETAIL, JOINTS, AND THE COMPONENTS THAT MAKE UP THE OVERALL DESIGN. THAT CONCEPT IS SOMETHING THAT I WILL CARRY FORWARD WITH ME, THE IDEA THAT EVERY STRUCTURE IS COMPRISED OF PARTS THAT RANGE IN SIZE BUT NOT IN IMPORTANCE, AN IDEA THAT SPEAKS TO THE DESIGN ITSELF AS WELL AS THE PROCESS FROM WHICH IT IS CREATED. IN ADDITION TO DESIGN EDUCATION, I HAVE BEEN PRIVILEGED WITH A VARIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK PROFESSIONALLY IN MY FUTURE FIELD. IN MY THREE SUMMERS OF INTERNING, I HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE REAL WORLD DESIGN PROCESS AND DISCOVERED THAT THE NEAT TIMELINE OF DESIGN SCHOOL IS NOT ALWAYS PRESENT IN THE FIELD. TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU MUST STAY ONE STEP AHEAD. TIME MANAGEMENT AND DEPENDABILITY ARE TWO IMPORTANT TRAITS THAT I DEVELOPED WHILE INTERNING. LAST SUMMER, I HAD THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO DO A BRIEF INTERNSHIP WITH THE HISTORIC REVIEW BOARD OF SAVANNAH, GA. I WAS ASSIGNED A LESSER-KNOWN HISTORIC COMMUNITY AND TASKED WITH PROVIDING THEM SOME PROPAGANDA TO ATTRACT TOURISM. I CREATED A WALKING TOUR BROCHURE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT LANDMARKS, ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES, AND HISTORICAL DATA. WHEN I PRESENTED THIS BROCHURE TO THE LEADERS OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD COMMITTEE, THEIR APPRECIATION TOOK ME BY SURPRISE. I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT MADE PEOPLE HAPPY AND GAVE THEM HOPE WHEN NO ONE HAD TAKEN THEIR LITTLE NEIGHBORHOOD SERIOUSLY THUS FAR. THESE EXPERIENCES SOLIDIFIED FOR ME THAT I AM IN THE RIGHT FIELD. I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH OVER THE LAST THREE AND HALF YEARS. FROM CALCULATING SOUND ABSORPTION RATES OF MATERIALS TO YET IT IS THE WAY THIS MAJOR HAS SHAPED ME AS A PERSON THAT MAKES ME MOST PROUD. WHEN I ENTERED THE FIRST YEAR AT UF, I WAS INEXPERIENCED SPEAKING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE, A PROCRASTINATOR, AND NEVER HAD TO WORK VERY HARD FOR A GOOD GRADE. DESIGN HAS SHAPED ME INTO SOMEONE WHO CAN ARTICULATE IDEAS ABOUT MY WORK IN FRONT OF OTHERS AND ACCEPT CRITICISM. IT HAS TRAINED ME TO BE EFFICIENT WITH MY TIME, AS IT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS. LASTLY, TECTONIC DESIGN, MY BREADTH OF KNOWLEDGE HAS EXPANDED GREATLY.
ARCHITECTURE HAS TAUGHT ME THE MEANING OF HARD WORK AND THAT IT DOES NOT ALWAYS PAY OFF IMMEDIATELY OR THE WAY WE THINK IT SHOULD, BUT IT IS ALWAYS REWARDING IN THE END.
