‘ENVISIONING THE CITY’: DESIGN EXPLORATIONS OF THE FUTURE URBAN FORMS Studio instructors: Baykan Günay, Adnan Barlas, Müge Akkar Ercan, Olgu Çalışkan, Cansu Canaran, Duygu Cihanger

The scope of the 2015-2016 Urban Design Studio works was the future city forms. First and second semester students were assigned to develop their futurist thinking in the context of urbanism. Previous utopian and avant-garde discourses were examined through the several workshops and seminars.

http://mud.arch.metu.edu.tr/studio-works/2015-2016-i-envisioing-the-city-design-explorations-of-the-future-urban-forms-and-spaces/

Verbal description of the fictional spaces given in the selected utopian writings and the cinematic descriptions of the fictional spaces in selected movies were visualized to depict the possible forms of the new urban life.

23

Against the unadaptive and bulky systems of conventional building techniques, ‘The Cloud ’ manifests a dynamic spatial system of future collectivity via a mobile habitation complex composed of interlocking layers that are responsive to the internal and external environment.

WEAVING THE CITY THROUGH THE TORN URBAN FABRIC

UD755 PARAMETRIC URBAN DESIGN WEAVING THE CITY THROUGH THE TORN URBAN FABRIC Instructors: Dr. Olgu Çalışkan, Y. Baver Barut

2015-2016 PUD Studio makes an experimental project with an urbanistic intention of designing a large-scale urban fabric via the morphological codes to ensure internal diversity in typology and external continuity in form and structure. To that aim, a 150-hectar urban land remaining in a very node of transformation zone in Ataşehir, Istanbul is selected as the site for the design study. http://pud.arch.metu.edu.tr/2015-2016-spring/

INTERNATIONAL MARS CITY DESIGN COMPETITION, 2016 The design team carried out an intensive design research on the design possibilities of colonizing Mars for future planetary habitation. The project called Dasein suggested a colonization process composed of seven phases (i.e. anchoring, seeding, techno, extraction, production, socialization and civilization) requiring different time limits. In each phase, the pioneering teams and task forces were to act as the generators of the settlement. For each stage of the development, a specific spatial program was written along with the certain design parameters for modeling the formation of the Martian settlements. The settlements called the collectives were considered responsive to the harsh conditions of the planet in the way of adapting its formation in a gradual manner. http://mud.arch.metu.edu.tr/2016-i-mars-city-design-international-design-competition/

FUTURE I ZUKUNFT ANKARA, GOETHE INSTITUTE (2017) The exhibition titled ‘FUTURE ANKARA’ is organized with the institutional corporation of GOETHE Institut – Ankara in January 2017. With reference to the main title, the exhibition consisted of five thematic works presented in English, Turkish and German in the form of illustration panels, solid-models, installations and video animations. With the richness of the representational media, the exhibition aimed to generate a strong imagination on the future forms and spaces of human settlements in the context of Ankara. Though the authors of the works are all designers, the exposed materials in the exhibition were not design of a city. They were not artworks, either. They were basically urban speculations supported by the fundamental theory of spatial design. Having been open between 14-27 January 2017, the exhibition ‘Future Ankara’ received a serious attention and positive reaction from practitioners, students and the public. Design Team: Eren Efeoğlu, Ebru Şevik, Ecesu Eşmen, Mert Can Yılmaz, Süleyman Demirel, Duygu Kalkanlı, Berçem Kaya, Emre Karabacak, Y.
