frequently asked QUESTIONS Altamaha Technical College and Okefenokee Technical College will be merged effective July 1, 2014, under a plan adopted in early August by the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia. Why are the two colleges merging? The main campuses of OTC and ATC are relatively close. Merging will allow our students to have more opportunities, while we maintain a concentrated focus on building a workforce that keeps our communities strong. Merging also makes sense financially, saving the taxpayers of Georgia hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Have any of the mergers resulted in the closure of campuses? The mergers did not result in the closings of any campuses or college facilities. How will the merger affect the availability of instructional programs? The merger is an important decision made in the face of major state budget reductions. Mergers have protected faculty positions and kept instructors in the classrooms during a period of declining appropriations and record enrollment growth for the TCSG. How will the ATC/OTC merger save money? The primary cost-saving result of the mergers is the elimination of some upper-level administrative positions, including presidents and vice presidents, whose jobs were made unnecessary by the consolidation of colleges. Most faculty and staff positions have remained unaffected. How will students benefit from the merger? TCSG students now enjoy the advantage of greater sharing of the merged colleges’ program resources along with expanded access to instructors and technology.

6 | OKEFENOKEE TECHNICAL COLLEGE

How quickly will the two colleges merge? The Altamaha Technical College and Okefenokee Technical College merger is scheduled to be effective July 1, 2014. However, there are issues to resolve before a merger can occur, including accreditation, college workforce plans, the merging of technical college, adult education and workforce training programs, PeopleSoft and banner consolidations, and much more. How will this change my classes? For the better! Consolidating the two colleges into one will create one of the largest two-year colleges in Georgia. You will have access to exceptional instructors, programs and technology in 13 counties: Appling, Bacon, Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Clinch, Glynn, Jeff Davis, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne. Will the name of my college change because of the merger? Yes. Effective July 1, 2014, the merged institution will be known as Coastal Pines Technical College. Where will I graduate from if I finish before the merger is complete? If you finish before July 1, 2014, at OTC, your graduation institution will be OTC. Likewise, if you finish before July 1, 2014, at ATC, your graduation institution will be ATC. If I graduate before the merger is complete, will the change in college names be confusing for my future employers? It is quite common for colleges to merge or change names as time goes by. This will not affect your status as a graduate in the community. Both ATC

Can You a Good Deal?

If you could take colleges classes and be awarded both high school credit and college credit, wouldn’t that be a deal too good to miss?

sweet

Okefenokee Technical College has a partnership with most high schools that allows you the opportunity to simultaneously work toward completion of a high school diploma and earn college credit.

DUAL ENROLLMENT: using HOPE to earn dual college and high school credits

ACCEL: funds to pursue an associate or baccalaureate degree while in high school

High school students can take one or more courses from Okefenokee Technical College using HOPE grant monies. Under dual enrollment, students receive simultaneous course credits that count toward high school graduation and future postsecondary education.

ACCEL is a financial aid program for education that’s funded by the Georgia Lottery and administered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission. ACCEL provides funding that allows Georgia high school students to take coursework leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree from a TCSG college or other eligible postsecondary institution in Georgia. Courses pursued by students under this program must come from the approved course directory which is provided to the state’s high school counselors. Courses are available only in the areas of the core graduation requirements for college preparatory students: English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Foreign Language.

Best of all, all hours paid by HOPE under a dual enrollment program do not count toward the total HOPE scholarship or grant hours that Georgia students can use after high school for their undergraduate studies!

How do I know if these courses are right for me or if OTC offers courses at my high school? For more information, contact your local OTC Student Affairs Coordinators listed below. Kate Bussey (912) 632-2355 E-mail: kbussey@okefenokeetech.edu Serving Bacon, Pierce, and Ware Counties
