INTRODUCTION For this assignment we are supposed to create a new design concept to implement into the Learning Resource Center (LRC) of the College Lane Campus at the Hertfordshire University. We were given a brief by the LRC to carefully scrutinize and think of while coming up with our ideas. The brief mainly suggested that we focus on the ground floor of the LRC and that we assist in providing a costed design for enhancing the key spaces within that space. We were to take into account the existing spaces and necessities of the current ground floor such as dynamic group study spaces, computing facilities, quiet spaces and also think about that the space might need to be used for student registration twice each year. Using all the information given I moved into planning my ideas of creating new spaces within the existing space.

5

DESIGN STATEMENT As a designer in a world of constant consumption I want to try to work with as much sustainable resources as possible. This could be the reuse of old material or old products, and if using any new furniture I prefer to look into brands that work a lot to reduce their environmental impact, and also since the brief in this suggest us to be as costed as possible I thought of designing and producing objects out of sustainable, reused material. By doing so I am able to create as much as possible by using very little resources and by doing so I want to show that one can do much without producing much new things or spending a lot of money.

6

DESIGN CONCEPT Thinking of my goals as a designer together with this given brief I wanted to look further into creating spaces within spaces using as little resources as possible. I began by doing a space planning of the area and analyzed how much space each area needed. I also did a smaller survey where I asked students and staff of the university of what they liked and did not like about the LRC and what they thought was good and what could be enhanced. I then did some research to see if there were any possibilities where I could find a company that already worked with collecting recycled materials that could then be used for production of new objects. I did come across a company called TerraCycle, who is a company that recycle absolutely everything and I thought of the possibility to collaborate with them to collect old objects and materials so that we then could create spaces with found materials – reduce, reuse, recycle

7

TERRACYCLE Looking further into how one could work with them I found out that they already are working with different parties to find new ways of using their waste, solves for it and then works with a brand to drive value and equity. They also offer tailored programs to a brand’s needs by customizing the levels of operational support. This claims that with the help of TerraCycle a larger scale program could manage to collect and recycle materials such as wood and cardboard that then could be used for creating new objects for this design project.

«TerraCycle is Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the non-recyclable. Whether it’s coffee capsules from your home, pens from a school, or plastic gloves from a manufacturing facility, TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste. We partner with individual collectors such as yourself, as well as major consumer product companies, retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, and small businesses across 20 different countries. With your help, we are able to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfills and incinerators each month.»

8

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE For this project I wanted to look into materials that if wasted, they are able to become something new or be burnt for energy purpose without causing much environmental imprint. I therefore looked into materials such as wood, timber and cardboard paper. I have earlier been very inspired by other designers such as Kengo Kuma and Shigeru Ban whom both work with both to create steady, sustainable construction using natural materials only. I will not in this project compare myself in any way to these very much established, great architects, but would like to show how I can in a smaller scale adapt the same principles and ideas into a minor project of my own.

9

10 FIRST PIN UP

In my first design proposal I had created spaces with both bespoken and generic design. I had also worked in a lot of color into my concept to make the area more playful. After I got my feedback I decided all these things had to change in certain ways. I felt that my concept was not cohesive anymore thus I decided to go over the layout again and also look through my choices of materials again. The biggest problem I had before my first pin up was to create a good, logical floor plan using my furniture and also to use the materials and colors in a consistent system. In the first proposal I had a lot of different solutions for seating, something I felt went away from my original idea of creating spaces with as little resources as possible, so this was something I felt I needed to work on further. On the right hand side I have included my first design proposal, with pictures showing my first ideas. I personally felt that it was a little bit messy, so the feedback was very rewarding and helpful to use while working further on my concept.

CONCEPT

In my concept I want to challenge the space and sustainability of the LRC. I wanted to use the space to create more space by giving the illusion of smaller creative spaces within the given area. By doing so we can create a more even flow of people and their usage of the different aspects of the LRC ground floor. Also for my design I have chosen to use less new material and rather look at ways to create new objects out of reused or recycled material, like the paper cylinders or the wood used to create tables and study pods. To a certain extent new furniture are involved in creating the more colorful and playful space too. Keeping this in mind the brand chosen takes a fairly serious standing point when it comes to production and sustainability.

Feedback shows I have managed to create a space out of recycled material, and that my booths also will help with noise mitigation. Good to be reminded to credit precedential work by other artists.

RECEIVED FEEDBACK

COMMENT

SOLUTION

Keeping this feedback in mind, I wanted to use the idea of study booths further. This will help further with noise mitigation and also create separate spaces for group study alternatives. These will also be on wheels, thus flexible and mobile.

It is always nice to get only positive comments on once work, but I do prefer constructive feedback

We learn from our mistakes. It is a good thing to create, and fail and recreate and succeed. The definition of insanity is to expect a different result by doing the same thin over and over again - Einstein

Again good to see that people understand my design concept. It seems people understand the goal of using recycled material and that it is also possible to do so. Again the creation of spaces seems obvious to the observer.

Again, I will stick to the idea of using recycled material and the use of spaces (booths) to create further, more flexible spaces.

I was glad to hear that people noticed the use of color. I wanted to create a more playful space by putting color on to simple things, such as painting walls or using colorful furniture.

By using more color on walls and some pieces of furniture I am able to create more seemingly drastic changes with simple solutions.

I was glad to hear that people notices the integrated curve in my design. Also how the layout is carefully created by placing furniture around the area to create nice, clear passages through the entire space.

The curve for me works as a natural creator of a passage in that upper corner. It creates an excitement amongst the otherwise straight lines, and the use of paper cylinders to reduce noise becomes even more useful in this way.

I have not really integrated a plant wall in my design, but the paper cylinders are combined with plants in one of my inspirational boards. I am not sure what a wendy house is.

I will look further into maybe integrating more plants into my “village to draw further association with an outdoor environment. With the usage of more study booths I am succeeding in giving people the feeling of a minor village.

Like one of the above it is helpful to see how people get the concept and idea of creating spaces with simple solutions without overcrowding or using to many groups of furniture.

Again the thing I focused most on after receiving my feedback was to create an even more clear layout with clear passages without overcrowding or losing too much space.

Again someone notices the outdoor feeling. This is helpful since it shows that my concept seems to be on the right track. The Village is developing.

I will continue in using my booths to create more spaces with in the existing space. This is helpful since the smaller huts gives the illusion of more private spaces within the already open area.

SOLUTION

I would not say that the solution is advanced even though it might seem to be. Yet if someone thinks that something seems difficult or uncomfortable it is worth looking over it again.

I will look over the choice of furniture and maybe remove some types to create a more cohesive pattern of furniture.

I understand that this is something people would want and need, luckily we have “The Key where student can go to find a calm space where they can pray

The Key

Tents do have a pitch just like my study houses, so this might be the worng guess but still shows association to my idea of creating houses.

I will continue using my pitched houses since people are noticing the design of them

Light is important for creating a good environment for reading and studying, especially in a space open 24/7.

I will not integrate new light in the space since the light in the LRC are fluorescent and creates a good feeling of daylight. I will though integrate light into my study booths so they do not become too dark.

Signage is definitely worth thinking about since the space is quite large. Also this feedback reminded me of creating more single/Silent study spaces.

I will showcase a new navigation system, integrated on signs and in the floor. Another room will be separated only for the purpose of silent studying. I also believe that more of the study houses will help with creating more private spaces.

I wanted to create an inviting design and a believable concept, but not overdo it. Thus it seems realistic to kill some darlings.

I will reduce the use of color in certain areas. By only putting it on some walls, and by reducing the use of very colorful furniture.

14 FEEDBACK

I did get a lot of good feedback from fellow colleagues and was pleased to see that I had succeeded on many of the aspects I was focusing on. The idea of creating new products out of old material was very popular, and my study huts are good for noise mitigation, and they also creates good spaces for private studying. The color scheme was met with divided meanings, some thought it looked nice some mentioned that I should be more careful in using too much color not to create distraction. The generic furniture I chose for this project are the Joy and Stay series from Italian interior brand Cavaletti. Cavaletti has been looking for solutions to reduce the cost of the supply chain, minimizing waste generated and investing process improvements. The company believe in a better world and invests in the awareness of employees for proper separation of waste generated, and the dissemination of this knowledge. This corresponds good with my idea of choosing products that has minimal effect on the environment, yet some thought they seemed uncomfortable so I did decide to reduce my choice of products from four to three. This also helps with the reduce of costs for the final proposal.

15

FURTHERMORE After reading through my feedback I am glad to see that many notices my design, and also understands my concept. It seems more realistic to create solutions with the help of already existing material, and reuse it instead of buying or creating something new. By using TerraCycle as a third party, in collecting material the idea of creating new things out of old material not only becomes realistic but also creates a concept in itself. I like to receive constructive criticism and will use it to go over and clear up my ideas and on the way kill some darlings. Luckily the goal of my idea seemed to be on the right track, and the feedback helped in moving into step two to create the finished solution to my proposal. Further on I will present my finished moodboard, present my final materials and bespoken design before moving to show the final design.

16 MOOD

The feeling I want to achieve with my design, is a warm atmosphere using light colors and natural materials. I want people to walk in to the LRC and experience a bright warm feeling as you do when in the summer sun. I believe that a bright, warm daylight helps with concentrating on reading and studying and by letting the light from the void reach trough the space using ambient color such as white will help with the light experience. To avoid to much reflection inside the space I want to use more non ambient materials such as wood on reading and seating surfaces.

17 INSPIRATION

I was inspired by spatial furniture such as study booths similar to small houses which helps with the association of a village concept. Furthermore I was very inspired by the straight lines occurring in the vertical paper tubes and the pitches on the roofs of houses. All these combined helps in creating a space defined by lines. Materials such as different types of wood like, pine and chipboards and cardboard tubes will help further in creating a warm natural environment. To correspond with these materials I want to use clear, yet warm tones of color from the main tones of the color specter such as blue, green, yellow and orange.

18 MATERIALS

As mentioned earlier I am looking to produce new products using recycled material. I found a company called TerraCycle that works in recycling different kinds of material, and I thought of partnering up with them to manage to collect different kinds of used wood that could then be collected and used to produce new material. Another positive thing of using this sort ot material is that it can be used again in different forms without causing much damage on the environment. Paper tubes was also something I was inspired to use. Famous architects such as Kengo Kuma and Shigeru Ban are both common users of this product to create spaces, thus I found them helpful for dividing the space and also help with noise mitigation since it is a fairly soft material. For other fixings such as the walls I have chosen light, natural colors such as grey and white with a yellow base to create warm tones. I also want to integrate a striped wallpaper to enhance the use of my color specter. The straight lines in the wallpaper will help further in defining my spaces. I also want to warm up the light enviroment using bright colors. I have chosen to use blue, green, yellow and orange for walls, fixings and furniture. The NCS codes are carefully chosen out to match one another in tones, whitenss and blackness. See spreadsheet on the next page for more info. The floor in the LRC is currently a blue wall to wall carpet. I would like to see this removed and replaced with a light grey terrazzo floor. Terrazzo is famous for is softness in comparison to pure concrete and is commonly used in larger institutions such as schools or hospitals since it is nicer to stand and walk on in comparison to, for example concrete. A thing worth to mention are the lighting in the LRC. I have not created any new light fixings for this project, instead I kept the existing light since I have mainly focused on the spaces. Although I would see to change the lighting system to LED instead of regular fluorescent lighting since this saves a lot more energy. Also LED has much more longevity than regular lights.

AREA DISPOSITION In the design brief it is mentioned that the LRC might have to be used for student registration two times each year. This will create a massive flow of people through the room for some period of time and thus demands a flexible space. I therefore thought to create a layout were spaces are clearly defined yet flexible to change. As mentioned I want to create simple furniture that will be used throughout the space, these also needs to be flexible enough to move around for different purposes such as the student registration period. The tables are of simple, square or rectangular shape so that they can be lined up and the study huts would be constructed with wheels so that they can be easily moved around the space for different purposes.

AREA DISPOSITION In the second plan on the right hand side I am showing one example of how the same amount of furniture, even more, can work in the same space yet for the purpose of student registration. For this event I have mainly focused on the open areas yet kept some rooms closed of for studying since this is the main purpose of the LRC. For example the technology suite and the silent study room are kept as they were for students to come and use the facilities while a possible registration process takes place. In the open area I have moved the more comfortable furniture closer to the entrance for students to wait around in while waiting. Further in I have lined up furniture for the staff to register new students. The same amount of study booths are still in the same space just moved around to keep the same amount of seating’s. Close to the exit area I have created a space where newly registered students can move to collect items such as information and of course their UH Hoodie.

The study huts that I have created are of simple rectangular shape, with a pitched roof to mimic a smaller house. These ones have an opening in one end and a wall in the other to create a more private space for group study purposes. These will have integrated electrical outputs for computers, and are also equipped with a screen for students to connect their work too, in case a group need to go through work together. In the ceiling a LED light strip is integrated for a good reading environment.

28 NAVIGATION

Since I wanted to define the areas of the LRC using color and lines and came up with the idea to integrate colored lines into the floor to lead students to their area of choice. Whether they need to use the computers in the technology suites, meet friends in “The Village or use the media preparation alcove they can simply follow the colored lines on the floor. I also did a rough draft of how the signs could appear, to help with understanding the different colors more closely. The sign on the right hand side shows the different areas in color, and each color represent the lines in the floor. I did two different propositions, one on hardwood for associating with the rest of the materials used, and another one could be cut in a foil machine and then placed on an illuminated sign at the entrance.

30

SUMMARY Before I chose to go into the field of interior design I had a background in retail design and visual merchandising. An industry that very much effect the environment in a significantly depraved way. I therefore wanted to explore more of the aspects surrounding sustainability and use that knowledge to challenge the industry and our throwaway culture. For this design I have created and idea to enhance and improve the existing learning resource center on College Lane Campus at Hertfordshire university. To answer best to the clients’ brief in the aspects of costs and flexibility I saw it as the best solution to create new products, specifically for the LRC, using recycled materials only. By teaming up with TerraCycle, the British company whom works only to collect and recycle all sorts of material, I did find this to be very much possible to accomplish. Also, for this concept specifically I wanted to create an environment with natural elements to create an outdoor, communal-like atmosphere. The phrase “Village” caught my attention, as one of the expressions’ components are; to create an aesthetically pleasing home-like atmosphere using the physical environment to convey communal values. By using natural materials, reused for new purpose just like the earth reinforces with the philosophy of cradle to cradle and exploring colours, lines and minor huts to define my spaces I feel that my village is complete.
