The African American Coloring and Activity Book is one of the best ways to foster creativity and fun! The benefits of the African American Coloring and Activity book are Self-expression - coloring on a blank "canvas" (piece of paper), is a way for children and adults alike to express themselves. You can tell a lot about the way a person is feeling by the images that they draw, the colors that they use, etc. It is important to give children and adults a chance to express themselves, and not all children or adults express themselves through words and through writing, many use art. There are many other ways to use this book, below is a small list of what this book can be used for. Therapy - for many people (myself included) coloring is therapeutic. Regardless of whether it's scribbling, or coloring the "best picture ever", coloring can be a way to de-stress, after a busy morning at work or students active day. This book is great for winding down, and calming down, after the stresses of a day. Coordination and Building motor skills - Many of the motions involved in making art, such as holding a paintbrush or scribbling with a crayon, are essential to the growth of fine motor skills. According to the National Institutes of Health. Decision Making: According to a report by Americans for the Arts, art education strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The experience of making decisions and choices in the course of creating art carries over into other parts of life. Visual Learning: Drawing, coloring and book activities all develop visual-spatial skills, which are more important than ever. Even toddlers know how to operate a smart phone or tablet, which means that even before they can read, kids are taking in visual information. Focus - Paying attention to a single task for a length of time is necessary for coloring, drawing and book activities and for all sorts of things throughout one's life. Art education teaches students how to interpret, criticize, and use visual information, and how to choose colors and make choices based on it. Inventiveness: When kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art, they develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives. “Art is a way to encourage the process and the experience of thinking and making things better! Cultural Awareness: Teaching children to recognize images an artist creates in portraying a subject helps all people understand the concept of diversity. Improved Academic Performance: Studies show that there is a correlation between art and other achievement. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people and adults who participate regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. You can also find other art work, books, printable posters, puzzles and cards for your kids to color and give to friends and family on special occasions. The aim of this coloring book project is to draw images for young people to learn black history, while coloring the expressionistic portraits that are in an abstract style. I set out to draw portraits that convey personality, imagination and emotion through the use of lines and images. I picked up my first pencil when I was four at St. Joseph AME church in Durham North Carolina. That is when my passion for art began as my grandmother put a pencil in my hand to keep me quiet during Sunday morning services.

I immediately fell in love with all the details that go into creating an art portrait: The composition, lighting, contrast between my subjects and the background. Portraits has always been a special part of my artwork, especially historical moments and personalities. It is truly a pleasure to capture the bond between bold lines, the love between peoples faces, shapes and the excitement of the expression. The black line establishes a dynamic surreal quality, suggests notions of excitement and freedom, and formally unifies the objects in each image; the lines provide clues to content and interpretation. I tell all people to draw what they feel inside because no one can express what a person feels inside, so express yourself! Thank you for purchasing this coloring book, I hope it inspires young people to search for knowledge and to draw! Eric Kelly III
