Designer's statement Inspired by the roots of graphic design, one may find that to truly understand visual communication, one must start at the beginning. As a graphic designer, the goal is to find a solution, even when the problem is complex and murky. Although the passage to the answer may be treacherous, one must persist, conceptualizing and visualizing each step of the way. The solution is most rewarding when the answer is simple, beautiful, and concrete.
SEA LEGs WINe Sea Legs is a winery based in San Francisco that emphasizes the feel and style of the city. With a modern-nautical style, Sea Legs captures the essence of having a glass of wine while walking on the beach, smelling the salty air and hearing waves crashing against the rocks. The final package design is developed around the idea of San Francisco and what it has to offer. Hand-made lettering and iconography were utilized to create a feeling that is true to the city.
push magazine Push Magazine combines the aesthetics of the popular high fashion magazines, and the abrasive attitude of street skateboarding magazines. The unique combination results in an experimental magazine that is part fashion and part skateboarding. Inspired by Emigre’s avant-garde layout and typography, the pages of Push Magazine utilize abstract and experimental design, yet remain aesthetically appealing.
MÚI CHOCOLATe company MÚI, meaning flavor or scent in Vietnamese, is a Vietnamese-American chocolate company that specializes in artisan chocolates influenced by traditional flavors. With both American and Vietnamese influence, MÚI wants to create chocolates that are recognizable but adventurous to new eaters of Vietnamese cuisine. The final package design utilizes a pattern inspired by traditional Vietnamese clothing, as well as clean typography, resulting in a contemporary Vietnamese style.
CANON ANNUAL REPORT Canon corporate is known leaders in cutting-edge camera and video equipment. They take pride in their products and also the spirit of professionalism that makes them such an admirable and successful company. The goal was to create an annual report that reflects the excellence and professionalism that Canon embodies. This annual report combines clean typography with images of Canon’s classic cameras. The design is a revitalization of clean and classical style.
core board game Core is a futuristic race to the finish, based on the idea of the classic children’s game, King of the Hill. The goal of the project was to create a completely functional board game that children to young adults could play and enjoy, involving problem-solving skills and strategy. Inspired by the minimal futurism of the iconic movie TRON, Core is futuristically styled with basic geometric shapes, bright luminescent colors, clean typography and iconography design. Constructing the board game allowed for the utilization of craftsmanship skills and experimentation with materials such as acrylic and light, which illuminates the playing field.
SĂźN corporate identity SĂœN, French for sound, produces high end audio equipment, specializing in personal listening headphones and ear buds. SĂœN is a conceptualized company that was created to demonstrate branding development and experimentation. The objective was to fully develop a cohesive branding identity, which includes a stationery system and a corporate standards manual. The result is an innovative brand with modern design.
sfc first exposures Founded in 1974, SF Camerawork is a non-profit arts and education organization whose mission is to support the work of emerging photographers and new ideas in the photographic arts. The task was to create a conceptual campaign that follows SFC’s First Exposures, which serves the underprivileged youth of San Francisco. Continuing with the idea of First Exposures, the campaign aims to promote photography to teens and young adults. With this goal in mind, the pieces utilize clean typography, bright colors, and fun imagery.
The Guerrilla Campaign aims to draw the target audiences into the gallery space, by implementing disposable cameras through out the city. The bright colors will catch the eye of by –passers who will read and learn about the campaign as well as SFC’s First Exposure program. Once picked up, one may read about the guerrilla campaign, which asks the by–passer, “Who are you as a local?” and to take a photo of themselves. Once the photo has been taken, they will have read that the photo will be part of a gallery installation at SFC. At the end of the campaign SFC will hold a gallery exhibition, where those by –passers will attend to view the result of the campaign as well as learn about the First Exposure program.
glasses infographic The goal for Moments in the History of Eye Glasses was to create two deliverables that focus on the topic of eye wear; a video infographic and a poster. The motion graphic focuses on the evolution of eye glasses and famous glasses that have been worn in history. To keep the idea of vision in mind, the project utilizes subtle colors, which are easier on the eyes. The combination of clean vector images and typography ties the project together to create both an entertaining and informational experience for the viewers. The poster is a flat adaptation of the motion graphic, which also utilizes clean text, vector images, and a subtle color palette.
MESSR cosmetics Messr (messieur), French for gentleman or mister, is a cosmetics company that sells high-end mens grooming products. Messr aims to provide products that guarantee the best shave and are made from the highest quality materials. The final packaging utilizes a black and gold color scheme and clean typography, resulting in a product line that embodies a dapper, clean, and high-end look and feel.
ZAHA HADID Exhibition Zaha Hadid is one of the greatest female architects of 21st century. Her work ranges from architecture to high fashion. Land Sea Sky creatively categorizes her vast range of work into three categories: Land, Sea and Sky. The objective was to create a conceptual exhibition, with an exhibition book, print ephemeras, and accessory collateral, that captures Hadid’s iconic designs. Overall, the pieces utilizes clean abstract design, a trademark of Hadid’s work.
STELLASPHERE feSTIVAL The Stellasphere is a 3-day festival that combines learning about astronomy with performances by some of the greatest electronic dance music artists of today; Justice, Calvin Harris, and Daft Punk. The objective was to design a website and mobile application that will promote, entertain, and inform potential event-goers. To achieve this, the website captures the theme of space, and utilizes a dynamic background. To complement the space theme, the site is designed to be clean and modern, by utilizing a minimal color palette and clean sans serif typefaces.
