MEASURED DRAWING OF A CROISSANT How to measure a Croissant? To measure a Croissant, before the croissant starts to shrink (around one day after the bakery), put the fresh croissant on to a platform. With the help of T-square and ruler, perpendicularly mark down the label of its two sides (both length and width) to transfer the 3D measurement into 2D measurement. In terms of the height, the method is to cut the section of the hightest part and lay it down, then use the same process above to measure it.

In plan and elevation views drawing, pencil shading is mainly used to tell the surface looking due to different extent of softness. As well as the geometrical measurement helps to give a direct impression
To draw the holes structure of section view costs time due to its complex distribution and shape. Through section views, the inside structure and frame can be seen in a vivid way.
A gird with 45 degrees vertical axis is in work to demonstrate a three-dimensional space. Firstly three separated section slice was drawn, then they are connected smoothly to build up the body of croissant.
On the tracing paper on top of section views, grids are created to measure their length and width. The axonometric view is based on the outline of the shape of three section cuts. Footstep is 10mm for both vertical and horizontal axies, with origin located from right hand side.

NEW MARIO WORLD
The making of new Mario world. With two segaments combined, the characters are put into the free space in between them. Different shade level on the hill and box body aims to contrast the different light angels. The landmarks are arranged almost to the vertical direction so that they can be fitting to the 3D world. As well as the orange stairs, it is designed to emphasis the sense of three dimensional sketch in terms of vertical levels.

Preparation Place the Mario world at an angle of 45 degrees in order to create a visual effect of three dimensional perspective sketch. (pencils as sketching tools)
Converting 2D to 3D. Based on the edge of each geometry pattern, line out a pair of parallel straights lines as the boundarys. The longer the lines are leaded, the further the object is from the 2D view.
Two half pieces of Mario World. Perspectively, two parts of Mario world were finished, one of which is the front view and the other one is the back view.
In the hand drawing, both general information and details are demonstrated such as Mario--the character and the representation of plants. One thing which is in need to improve is the illustration of three dimensional blocks, especially the base of blocks should be trimed more.

Finalisation. To finalise the work, put two pieces of half Mario world together, use another layer on top to trace.
PAPER LANDSCAPE
The making of new landscape For the 3D panelling part, I tried to use three types of panels with different height and shape to capture the aesthetic feature of my initial surface given. My landscape has higher altitude at both sides and lower altitude in the middle. Therefore, the taller panels are located at both ends of the landscape. Furthermore, tall panels also go with the land where it goes upwards a bit since the whole surface is not flat. Three types of 2D panels are applied to show the 2D variation, they are distributed randomly on the surface.

Above is the view from the other side of the same landscape area as the one on the right hand side.
This is a photo of a group of 3D panels at the edge of the landscape. They were rolled up to be the tallest 3D panel. Each one of them is enclosed by four flat triangular surfaces, forming a pyramid shape. The top part (four caps) was kept to elevate the height of the panel even further, hence they are set to be upright rather thanfolded or bended. In front of them there are 3D panels with a smaller height. From this angle, a sense of aesthetic height decreasing could be detected.

Initial Landscape. The initial landscape has higher altitude at both ends, as well as some slight fluctuation of land spreading at edges. It is a relatively featured aestheic overall.
Mesh with 2D variation. This image is the mesh of the surface with 2D panelling variation. On the surface there are three types of 2D pattern: triangle-shape, diamond-shape and the mix of triangles with straight lines.
3D Panels. Three types of 3D panels are based on the shape of pyramids, with different sizes of cutting peremetres on top. From left to right it represents the height from large to small.
This is a view of the downside the model. This sketch is aiming to demonstrate the fabrication process and method applied. Between every two segments of the rolled panels, tabs are connected by PVA glue and strengthened with masking tape. In the drawing the masking tape has not been taken off since some of the PVA glue does not work well to stick the tab together effectively.

Final Digital Edition. The final model contains 53 3D panels and 47 2D panels. Geographycal arrangement of 3D panels are referred to the initial altitude variation.
INVISIBLE CITY
Cites & THE DEAD MELANIA My city---Melania, is a city filled with complex trasition from live to dead, apart from several permenantly existing characters, all other roles keep changing and swapping identities with each other. Furthermore, there is a variety of emotion communication and division, such as anger, relax, intense and aggression. The general impression it has delivered out is complexity and unstability. Character Symbols are arranged in their regional area, reflecting different time-spaces taking place. Linemark for dark and light is polylines attracted by points, which ended up as a 2D-3D combined linework, aiming to form a wall shape. The geometrical size of character symbols matches directly with the amount of people. As well as the camera position are located 1600 in height. Stories taking place in different time slots make up the basic frame of spatial arrangement. Through the whole isometric illustration, my intention is to show clearly how different parts of plot are arranged in the same space, as well as the emphasis on linework. For example, the closed linework for passage of time refers to the permenantly existing characters and

In this scene every single character is ever lasting, regardless of the whole changing envionment, this feature is the reason this perspective has been chosen. Another feature is that all roles are in pairs, so there are both regional story(between each pair of characters) and general plot(the whole view capture). It contains both light mood (nurse and stepdaughter) and heavy mood (the others). A trangular vault and two strips of curves were to show the space boundary

a group of people
In this perspective view, an extra character is created--the fortuneteller (the female on the right hand side). She is defined as a permanent role to provide another view of the whole city (apart from Maco Polo), but she literally knows what is going on. On the left hand side, the dark shadow is generated by the sunlight angle, which also matches the unknown identity of the group of people. There are mountains and clouds in the background to help to show a wider eyesight viewing.

REFLECTION
From the lecture contents, first of all, I got an impression that how representation work and contribute to the process of design. For example, representation can be demonstrated in forms of symbolism, form, spatial arrangement etc. Secondly, the design concept has a close relationship with society and history. This aspect has been reflected on the impact from lifestyle on architecture, landscape and urban design. For me personnally, this subject is really practical and useful, throughout four modules and portfolio edition, my skills in software digital design as well as hand fabrication have been enhanced hugely. It also taught me to be creatice always, especially in module three and four, where individual design and idea almost dominates the main process of work. While using software such as Illustrator, Rhino and Photoshop, I got to understand how to make some basic geometry model and product such as panelling tools for 2D and 3D panels. In module one and two, I learnt skills of formal drawing such as tracing and creating axonometric view by using grids and outline. Another general point I would like to make is that studying FOD: Representation let me learn to be patience and have a good time management. Most of the modules cost quite an amount of time and are consistant straight from the last one. However, if work has been divided into everyday plan, the process having to be excuted per day is not going to be urbearable. Throught the whole semester, my module 2 is not successful. Module 2---Mario World is mostly based on hand drawing skills (converting 2D to 3D, axonometric view) and linework practice (the use of Illustrator for tracing and colouring). Without any foundation in hand drawing, I came across with huge disadvantages when drawing Mario World by hand, which I think could only be improved by keeping practising. Another reason is the time management. I have made amendments to improve drawing in module two and retook photo as well as photoshopping to improve the image quality throughtout all modules.
