Appearance Llamas are unique looking animals. Llamas are a lot smaller than camels. They are 5 to 6 feet tall (2 meters), they weigh about 400 pounds (181kg). Baby llamas are called “Crias, they weigh about 25 pounds (11 kg). Llamas look similar to camels, Llamas hold their necks upright just like camels, llamas only have two toes on each foot. The thick coat of fur on llamas could be white, brown, black or mixed colors. As you can see, llamas are very different than other animals.

These are what llamas eat.

Food Llamas are herbivores that means they only eat plants. Llamas eat leaves, weeds, grass and hay. They have an interesting way to eat their food; llamas use their lower teeth and lips to grab those grasses. Then, they use their back teeth to chew on their food. Llamas have 3 parts of their stomachs. After swallowing and chewing, the food goes down to the 1st part of their stomach. Then, it comes back up to their mouth. The food that comes back up to their mouth is called cud. Llamas chew their cud again and then they go into the 2nd part of their stomach. They repeat the same step until it reaches the 3rd part of their stomach. Finally they digest their food. This is how llamas eat their food.

Habitat Llamas once lived in the Andes Mountains, Chile and Peru in South America. Some llamas live with sheep or goat farms in South America; llamas are very good at guarding sheep and goats from coyotes and wolves. Llamas have unique adaptations that help them live in the Andes Mountains. They also have special hooves comparing to other animals that helps them walk on the rocky mountain that they call home. For example, llamas have special blood that helps them breathe the thin air on the mountains where they live. Now, most llamas live in zoos.

Behaviors Llamas only make sounds, or weird actions if they are in special mood. For example, they spit if they're mad or scared, but they mostly spit on other llamas instead of people. Llamas like to be with each other, this is why llamas call out if they see danger. They help each other if one of them is in danger, they hum when they are unhappy or hot. Mother llamas also hum to their babies. If you see a llama in South America, they would most likely be in herds. Llamas are calm, gentle and quiet animals, because of that; people use them as pack animals in some places where they don't have cars.
