EXPERIMENTS IN DRAWING with Carol Emmons

Adults Saturday, April 14 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Ages 14–Adult Saturday, July 28 Time: 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Engage in a day of dialogue and design as Dave Eppley shares his knowledge of site-specific art and his process of evaluating and activating space. Participants will be taken on a lively visual journey as they explore the complexity of architectural interiors. Dave will instruct participants in seeing details that are meant to go unnoticed and will give them an opportunity to learn his particular medium— brightly colored sign vinyl.

Drawing, one of the oldest and most basic visual forms, embraces a variety of processes and can generate works of great complexity. With The Line Unleashed and other examples as a backdrop, participants will explore diverse drawing techniques and approaches. In hands-on experiments with black and white media, each person will create their own book of samples.

Dave’s commissioned gallery installation, Loom, is now on view at the Arts Center. He has also created site-specific installations in public schools in Brooklyn and the Bloomberg Tower in New York. His work has been exhibited at the deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Boston. He has participated in the prestigious Workspace Residency in Lower Manhattan and lectures widely on the topic of site-specific installations. Dave also teaches for the Joan Mitchell Foundation in New York City. No experience is necessary for this workshop David Eppley, Loom (installation), 2012; vinyl tape. Courtesy of the artist.

Connecting Communities This innovative program brings superb artists into the community to collaborate on original artistic endeavors. Teens and adults are invited to participate in two exceptional projects beginning in May and continuing into the fall—storytelling with the fabulous Ex Fabula and the creation of urban art with the remarkable Wooster Collective.

Ex Fabula

Ex Fabula Workshop: Story. Stage. You!

Everyone has a story to tell, and this dynamic collaboration with Milwaukeebased Ex Fabula brings the power of storytelling to Sheboygan. Be part of a fascinating community narrative this summer as Ex Fabula’s founders lead workshops, host neighborhood story slams, and invite participants to share moments from their lives at Arts Center events throughout the season. The saga concludes in October with a cross-cultural, intergenerational storytelling spectacular that will include music!

Wooster Collective Art need not be confined to museums and galleries. Throughout the summer, New York City-based Wooster Collective will bring to Sheboygan talented artists who will work with community members to view the cityscape as a canvas for public art and share their expertise through hands-on workshops and collaborative projects.

Wooster Collective Salon: The Cityscape as Canvas Ages 16–adult Saturday, May 19, 1:00–4:00 p.m. Since 2001, Wooster Collective’s Marc and Sara Schiller (NY) have been showcasing and celebrating works of art created by notable street artists from around the world. Join Marc and Sara for an overview of street art and conversation about the value of this public art form and its potential for community expression.

($15/$12 member, $8 student)

Ages 16–adult Saturday, May 5 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Explore the strength of the spoken word and the stories we tell. Perfect your storytelling prowess as members of Ex Fabula share their stories, lead storytelling exercises, and discuss the relevance of storytelling today. Come ready to craft your tale and be a star of the story slam. Participation is FREE, but registration is required. Call the Arts Center or visit the website and click on the “Residencies” tab.

Wooster Collective Workshops Street artists selected by Wooster Collective’s Marc and Sara Schiller bring their expertise to the Arts Center and share their enthusiasm for urban art in a series of in-depth two-day workshops. Must be age 16 or older to participate.

Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29 Time: 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Skilled portraitist Gabriel Specter (NY) creates larger-than-life, wheat-paste murals of the people who are often overlooked in urban communities. Specter will work with participants to gather personal stories, to create portraits, and to apply the portraits in selected locations around the Arts Center.

($60/$51 member) Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28 Time: 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Chris Stain (NY) will teach the art of the stencil in this engaging workshop. Stain’s large-scale urban murals often portray, with dignity and respect, those people we often forget or fail even to notice. Workshop participants will learn to cut stencil selfportraits and apply these portraits to paper and selected sites around the Arts Center.
