xplore a world of creativity at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. No matter your age or level of experience, the classes and workshops offered at the Arts Center are just the ticket to expand
your horizons in the new year. Our staff of talented artists and educators will guide you as they share their expertise and passion for the arts in all its forms. Come, escape the gray days of winter, and journey into imagination!
WEEKEND WORKSHOPS Weekend workshops provide rare opportunities to work with exceptional artists from across the nation. Many are visiting artists-in-residence in the Arts Center’s well known Arts/Industry program or artists whose work is exhibited in the galleries. Workshops are designed to nourish your creativity, expand your skills, and support your own artistic practice in an energized studio environment. Special rates offered for college students. Call for more information. DRAWING IN GLASS WITH BETH LIPMAN Adults, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18 Investigate line and form using glass as your medium. Kiln forming is one of the most direct ways to draw in glass. Try your hand at traditional methods such as sgrafitto and enameling, and more experimental methods using torch working and graphite pencil. Participants will complete several projects. No experience necessary. Lipman is a glass artist who maintains her studio in Sheboygan Falls. Her work references seventeenthcentury still life paintings to express the fragility that exists in a world of excess. She has exhibited her work at the Museum of Glass, Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum, Gustavsbergs Konsthall in Sweden, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She was recently featured in an episode of Craft in America on PBS.
Tuition $110 ($93 member) Beth Lipman, Still Lifes in Glass (detail), October 26, 2003–February 15, 2004; installation view. Courtesy of the artist.
Conversations Between Two and Three Dimensions Adults, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10 Exhibition Artist-in-Residence Anna Hepler (ME) leads a day of exploration between two- and threedimensional work. Participants will use paper, plastic, tape, and direct methods of construction to create three-dimensional hollow forms that can be inflated. These forms will become the basis for a twodimensional investigation of drawing that can, in turn, become the blueprints for new sculptural forms. This cycle, repeated several times, is an exercise in translation and reveals the richness of working and thinking between materials, processes, and forms. Anna Hepler, who resides in Maine, is among five artists commissioned to create a work of art for The Line Unleashed, one of six exhibitions in The Drawing Season series. She received her M.F.A. from the UW-Madison in 1994 and has participated in many group and solo exhibitions. Most recently, her work has been shown at Suyama Space in Seattle and the Roswell Art Museum in Roswell, N.M. Her work is included in many public collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Gallery in London.
Tuition $110 ($93 member) Anna Hepler, The Great Haul, 2010; plastic, thread and staples; installation at The Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME. Courtesy of the artist.
COMING IN THE SPRING Through a special grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Arts Center is able to bring artists whose work is included in the exhibitions to Sheboygan for residencies. We will be offering additional Weekend Workshops later in the spring in conjunction with The Drawing Season exhibitions. If you would like to receive the latest updates regarding Weekend Workshops, contact Margaret Groff: mgroff@jmkac.org or 920-458-6144 x135. 2
