Painting: Personal Directions This class is geared to intermediate/advanced level students who have a sense of commitment to painting and seek a personal direction that fulfills their identity as painters— perfect for individuals interested in building a body of work around a unifying theme, idea, technique or process or for those who need help developing a focus of investigation. Pings, Tweets and Diggs: Understanding the World of Social Networking Course #: SB 500 Social networking tools are changing the way we live, work and connect with one another. Class discussions, presentations, readings and examples of emerging technologies and media bring greater understanding of the issues and practice of social media. Those who complete this course will know how to use blogs, tags, social networks, Twitter and Flickr productively, and have a framework for understanding and evaluating new social media tools and platforms. The Drawn Portrait Course #: SB This class will foster confidence in portrait drawing through an understanding of the basic anatomical structure of the human head, and observational techniques. Painting: Decoding Color This course gives basic lessons in primary, secondary and complementary colors, and teaches students how to break down a color as it relates to acrylic paint. Introduction to Studio Lighting Course #: SB 505 This course introduces the basic use and theory of artificial light, from the first incandescent light to today’s effects of strobe lighting. Portrait lighting will be emphasized. This is not a darkroom class. Drawing Techniques and Strategies Course #: SB 503 This class reviews the basics of drawing and engages students with a variety of drawing tools and techniques that will advance them to the next level of drawing competency. Introduction to Photoshop for Cameras Course #: SB 504 This introductory course in Adobe Photoshop gives students the basic skills needed for photo retouching, image enhancing and manipulation, and color correction. Participants should have a basic understanding of photography, color theory, illustration and the commercial printing process. Prerequisite: Working knowledge of the Macintosh operating system. Welding Course #: SB 514 This introductory studio course teaches students to manipulate steel into sculptural forms with heat and fire. Instruction in oxy-acetylene welding includes basic cutting and welding processes as well as important safety procedures. Sorry, no outside lab time is available. MIAD Open Figure Drawing Course #: SB 507 Tuesdays, 7-10 p.m. September 14-November 23 (No session on October 12) This is an opportunity to draw from a live model without instruction. One model provides a variety of quick and sustained poses. Participants can choose to preregister: $50 for 10 sessions, or pay $6 per session at the door.

TEACHER LICENSING MIAD is approved by the WI Dept. of Public Instruction to award non-matriculating credits for the purpose of teacher license renewal. MIAD is a 4-year degree granting college. Official transcripts may be requested from MIAD’s Registrar’s Office. Credits are awarded based on NASAD recommended equivalencies. • Creative Educators Institute awards 3 non-matriculating undergraduate credits for successful completion of the intensive summer studio program. • Professional Developer and Skill Builder Classes award non-matriculating credit based on 22.5 hours = 1 credit. MIAD alumni are leaders at area arts and education organizations.

Photography’s 20/20 Vision: The Humanity of the Moment Course #: PD403 “There is one thing a great photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment….realism is not enough — there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph.” Robert Frank Two premier educational resources, MIAD and the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM), collaborate to foster the advanced photographer’s development of a personal vision. Coinciding with The Milwaukee Art Museum’s exhibition, “Street Seens” (January 30-April 25), this course examines important historical trends in 20th and 21st century photography, and how those trends have impacted individual approaches to making photographs. Prerequisites: Pre-existing skill base and SLR Digital Camera. Instructor: Paul Calhoun Saturdays, 9-noon January 9-April 17, 15 sessions

The Structure of Narrative in Print and Artists’ Books Course #: PD402 Narrative form, both linear and non-linear, is explored through the intertwining relationship of imagery and text in artists’ books. A body of work emerges as participants create multiple prints and book structures using relief and monotype printmaking techniques, Xerox transfer and Japanese stab bindings. The classroom will become an ad agency, and the student will work as part of a creative team by developing an ad campaign for a new product. Prerequisites: Basic high school art skills.

Photography: Portrait Photography Grades 10-12 (PLACE HOLDER TEXT) Course #PC 117A 9 a.m.-noon Tuition: $255 This course is directed towards the individual considering a career in advertising. The classroom will become an ad agency, and the student will work as part of a creative team by developing an ad campaign for a new product. Prerequisites: Basic high school art skills. Prerequisites: Digital camera with minimum of 3 megapixals.

Figure Drawing — Grades 10-12 Course #PC 101A (a.m.) or Course #PC 101B (p.m.) 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. Tuition: $165 This course offers an introduction to drawing the human form. Students work from unclothed models. Instruction develops drawing skills and provides figurative work for portfolio development. A supply list will be sent to registrants. Prerequisites: Basic high school art skills. Parental consent required for students under 18 years of age.

Beginning Drawing for the Portfolio Grades 10-12 Course #PC 102A (a.m.) or Course #PC 102B (p.m.) 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. Tuition: $165 Instructors guide students in developing observational drawing and sighting techniques, design/composition skills and creative problem solving. Since a portfolio develops over time, students should expect this class to serve as one of the many steps they take in creating a strong portfolio for admission to a school of art or design. A supply list will be sent to registrants.


Career Exploration Advertising — Grades 9-12 Course #PC 110B 9 a.m.-noon Tuition: $165 This course is directed towards the individual considering a career in advertising. The classroom will become an ad agency, and the student will work as part of a creative team by developing an ad campaign for a new product. Prerequisites: Basic high school art skills.

Creating the Scholarship-Level Portfolio Grades 11-12 Course #PC 100A 9 a.m.-noon Tuition: $255 Relying on technical skill and product output is insufficient to create a portfolio that makes one’s work stand out among a pool of applicants. Students strengthen their portfolios through assignments, group collaborations, workshops on photo and digital documentation, slide presentations and weekly discussions to improve critique skills and the ability to communicate ideas. Drawing from the unclothed model is included in the studio work. Prerequisites: Must be a junior or senior working at an advanced level. Parental consent required for students under 18 years of age. MIAD Pre-College program support has been provided by generous grants from the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and Milwaukee Partnership for the Arts.


MIAD’S ADULT LEARNING POLICY STATEMENT Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Class sizes are kept small to facilitate individual instruction. Early registration is strongly recommended. A minimum number of registrations (usually 8) must be received for a class to be held. Class tuition and fees must be paid in full to guarantee enrollment in a course.

Cancellation/Withdrawal If MIAD’s Adult Learning Program cancels a class, your fee will be refunded in full. If a student wishes to drop a class, a refund, minus a $15 processing fee for each class, is granted if notification of withdrawal is received three business days prior to the first class meeting. Refunds will not be granted after that time.

Registration Confirmation A letter of confirmation and supply lists from the Adult Learning Office will follow receipt of a completed registration.

Gift Certificates Gift certificates are available year round in the amount you specify. The recipient can choose from any course and has up to a year from the date of purchase to use the gift. Please contact the Adult Learning office for more details.

Professional Development Plan The Creative Educators Institute is specifically designed to clearly connect to all 10 of the WI State Teacher Standards. Most importantly: • Knowledge and skills gained in studios and workshops are easily transferable to the High School curriculum.

• Creative Educators Institute awards 3 non-matriculating undergraduate credits for successful completion of the intensive summer studio program.

• Documentation for Professional Development goals is clearly provided through Educators’ Exchange (an online resource for lesson plans, projects and workshop ideas), professionally applicable social media skills, portfolio development and a body of work that showcases teacher acquisition of skill and conceptual development.

• Professional Developer and Skill Builder Classes award nonmatriculating credit based on 22.5 hours = 1 credit.

• An elective workshop that assists teachers in reflective writing about their professional development experience.
