WEEKEND WORKSHOPS Weekend workshops provide rare opportunities to work with exceptional visiting artists from across the nation, many of whom are residents in the Arts Center’s highly competitive Arts/Industry program. MEMORY THEATRES: EXPLORING ART AND MEMORY
Beth Lipman, Still Lifes In Glass, 2003–2004; glass
GLASS + KILN: THE SURVEY Adults, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Saturday–Sunday, September 17–18 Nationally renowned glass artist Beth Lipman (WI) will teach kiln-forming glass techniques, which are among the most expressive and easiest in the medium. Participants will learn to fuse (melting pieces of flat glass together) and slump (sagging glass into or over molds). Glass cutting, firing cycles, and cold working (grinding and polishing) will be discussed. Participants will complete several projects. No glass experience is required. FALL CLASSES FOR ADULTS AND TEENS CERAMIC RELIQUARY SCULPTURES Ages 14–adult, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Thursdays, September 22–October 20 Create a sculpture, reliquary, or other vessel to house your memories. Use a variety of techniques to commemorate a relationship, place, or event. Your piece can be embellished with personal artifacts after firing is completed. Adults, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 1 Join artist Gina Litherland (WI) in this unique, mixed-media workshop based on depicting personal memories in painting, collage, and assemblage. The class will begin with a brief discussion of memory techniques such as “memory theatres” and how contemporary artists use visual imagery to conjure memories. Participants may bring objects, photographs, or souvenirs to create their own works. Instructor: Gina Litherland Tuition: $110 ($93 member)
CERAMICS FOR THE ABSOLUTE BEGINNER Ages 14–adult, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Tuesdays, September 27–October 25 Discover the endless possibilities of working in the most traditional methods of building with clay: wheel throwing as well as slab and coil construction. Make both functional and sculptural ceramics. A variety of decorative and finishing techniques using clay and glazes will also be covered. Instructor: Pat Robison Tuition: $120 ($102 member)

AUTUMN SOUPS AND BREADS Ages 14–adult, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Tuesdays, September 27 and October 4 Nothing is more appetizing than homemade breads and soups. Learn unique recipes using fresh autumn ingredients. Instructor: Marilyn Montemayor Tuition: $54 ($46 member)

BEGINNING METALSMITHING Ages 14–adult, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Tuesdays, October 11–November 15 Beginning students will explore the fundamentals of metalsmithing, including sawing, filing, forging, texturing, and soldering. Each student will design and fabricate several jewelry projects. Practice metals are included in tuition. Experienced metalsmithers are welcome. TORCH–FIRED ENAMELING Ages 14–adult, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 23 Learn how to apply, layer, and fuse enamel to metal through the use of a handheld propane torch. Participants will enamel a variety of elements to use in the creation of a bracelet, pendant, or earrings. This is a great way to add color to your metalwork! FRENCH COOKING Ages 14–adult, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Tuesdays, November 1 and 8 Food lovers will savor this unique gastronomic experience of French cuisine. Embrace the age-old tradition of charcuterie and learn the techniques to create a delightful array of fine delicacies including beef bourguignonne, cassoulet, and pâté. CREATIVE HOLIDAY COOKING BÛCHE DE NOËL (YULE LOG) Ages 14–adult, 12:30–2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 11 Applauded as one of the best traditional French desserts, bûche de Noël, also known as Yule log, serves as a great alternative to holiday cookies. Learn to make this special dessert and celebrate the holidays with flair! Instructor: Marilyn Montemayor Tuition: $27 ($23 member)
EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSES Discover the value of the arts and creativity in this series of classes designed especially for young children and their families. Classes will be held in our spacious preschool classrooms.
BABY ART TIME Up to 2 years of age (with an adult) 10:00–11:00 a.m. Fridays, October 14 and 21 Make memories with your baby in this new class as you experiment with clay, paint, and more, and stroll through the galleries for inspiration. HOLIDAY BALLROOM DANCE EVENT
These classes offer hands-on learning experiences in the visual arts for older children and young teens. They are designed to teach creative thinking, encourage self-expression, and nurture positive creative energy.

VISUAL MEMORY JOURNALS Ages 11–14, 1:00–3:00 p.m. Saturdays, November 5–19 Discover the fun of creating your own journal! Participants will learn a variety of journaling techniques to convey memories using mixed media, altered personal photos, added color, collage, and text to complement handmade memory journals. with National Rhythm Champion Suzana Gossett Ages 14–Adult Sunday, December 11, 1:00–4:00 p.m. Practice your moves in a variety of ballroom styles such as fox-trot, salsa, swing, tango, and waltz. Watch dance demonstrations and special exhibitions by Suzana Gossett. Meet new people, socialize, and mix it up with other dancers. This is the perfect opportunity to dress up and treat yourself to an enchanting afternoon of style and elegance on the dance floor. Ballroom Dance Event admission: $10 ($8 member) Susan Alby will teach an introductory lesson at noon, prior to the event. ($5 per person)

YOUTH DANCE Begins week of September 12 Students develop confidence in their physical, social, performance, and creative skills in these funfilled classes culminating in a stellar springtime performance on the Arts Center’s stage. Students work in small classes with dedicated instructors September through May, ensuring that attention is paid to their individual skill development. Many classes have live musical accompaniment. Mini and Pre-Ballet classes instill a love of dance in children ages three to six by introducing creative movement, rhythm, and ballet class etiquette. Ballet I and II emphasize the foundations of ballet while including rhythm, coordination, and barre work. Ballet III, IV, and Advanced Ballet/ Modern include an introduction to modern dance techniques to broaden the young dancer’s repertoire.

YOUTH DANCE REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT Dance students may register and pay for either the entire September through May dance year or per semester. Students who register and pay for the entire year receive a 10% tuition discount. To ensure your child’s place for second semester, second semester payments must be made on or before January 6, 2012. For additional information or questions regarding class placement and registration, call Marisa Underhill at 920-458-6144 x129. If a class does not meet minimum enrollment, it may be rescheduled or canceled. Tuition is nonrefundable except in the event of class cancellation or serious injury or illness. Requests for refunds or credits due to injury or illness must be made in writing and accompanied by a doctor’s certificate. Refunds and credits will be prorated. A $25 registration and recital fee is incorporated into all tuition and is nonrefundable unless a class is canceled. Rehearsals and the spring dance recitals will take place in May. One DVD of the spring recital will be given to each dance participant. There will be a costume fee of approximately $35 for the spring dance recital. 5
PRESCHOOL The Arts Center Preschool offers children an early learning experience that emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and the development of fundamental skills through an arts-based curriculum. Students have amazing opportunities to visit the galleries, attend performances, and work with visual and performing guest artists. The Preschool is state licensed, and the curriculum aligns with the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards. The 2011–2012 school year begins Tuesday, September 6.

GUIDED TOURS OF THE EXHIBITIONS THROUGH December Enter the extraordinary world of HIDING PLACES: MEMORY IN THE ARTS and explore the exhibitions with a knowledgeable guide. Tours can be scheduled for groups of ten or more (from preschool through senior) and are designed to meet the needs and interests of the group, whether beginning art viewers or experienced art collectors. Visits can include a hands-on artmaking activity and a tour of the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden, part of the Arts Center’s unique collection of works by artist environment builders.
