SEOUL wr i te n by @ wi th p h ot o tak e n f r o m G o o g l e .c o m

This city is the world’s 14th largest city and second largest metropolitan area by its population. It is also home to over half of all South Koreans along with 678,102 international residents. Seoul is surrounded by mountains, the tallest being Mt. Bukhan, the world’s most visited national park per square foot. Seoul is by far South Korea’s largest city and one of East Asia’s financial and cultural epicenters. A fascinating blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge digital technology, home to endless street food vendors and vast nightlife districts, an extraordinarily highpressure educational system and serene Buddhist temples, a trend-setting youth culture and often crushing conformism, extraordinary architecture and endless monotonous rows of grey apartment buildings, Seoul is a city filled with stark contrasts. The birthplace of K-pop and the Korean Wave, Seoul received over 10 million international visitors in 2014, making it the world’s 9th most visited city and 4th largest earner in tourism.

경복궁

GYEONGBOKGUNG

People also called it Gyeongbokgung Palace or Gyeongbok Palace, was the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty. Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace is also commonly referred to as the Northern Palace because its location is furthest north when compared to the neighboring palaces of Changdeokgung (Eastern Palace) and Gyeongheegung (Western Palace) Palace. Gyeongbokgung Palace is arguably the most beautiful, and remains the largest of all five palaces. The premises were once destroyed by fire during the Imjinwaeran War (Japanese Invasion, 1592-1598). However, all of the palace buildings were later restored under the leadership of Heungseondaewongun during the reign of King Gojong (1852-1919). Remarkably, the most representative edifices of the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeonghoe-ru Pavilion and Hyangwonjeong Pond, have remained relatively intact. Woldae and the sculptures of Geunjeongjeon (The Royal Audience Chamber) represent past sculptures of contemporary art. 161, Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, +82-2-3700-3904, royalpalace.go.kr, Open 09:00-17:00, Adults 3,000 KRW Children 1,500 KRW

TRICK EYE MUSEUM

The Trickeye Museum is an art gallery with paintings created using ‘trompe l’oeil’ techniques that give each 2D art piece the illusion of being in 3D, which first opened its doors in 2010 at the heart of culture and art – Hongdae, Seoul. Trick Eye With 700 thousand visitors worldwide in 2014, the museum is loved by a wide spectrum of people; it is also the first optical illusion museum that is recognized by audiences as the number 1 museum out of all the attractions in Seoul on TripAdvisor. Instead of merely viewing paintings (as in a typical art gallery) visitors can interact with the paintings, posing themselves just right so that they look as if they are part of the original work. To ensure that even its busiest patrons have time to enjoy the fun, the museum stays open each day until 9PM, making it a popular date and hang-out place. 20, Hongik-ro 3-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Adults 15,000 KRW Children & Youth 12,000 KRW, 09:00-21:00, +82-2-3144-6300, http://www.trickeye.com/

CHEONGGYECHEON STREAM & PLAZA Cheonggyecheon is a 10.9 km (7.0 miles) long, modern public recreation space in downtown Seoul, South Korea. The massive urban renewal project is on the site of a stream that flowed before the rapid post-war economic development caused it to be covered by transportation infrastructure. Cheonggye Plaza roughly covers an area of 2,500 square meters, and is located at the starting point of Cheonggyecheon Stream. After the completion of Cheonggye Plaza, Seoul Metropolitan Government designated the area as a vehicle-free zone on holidays, providing more leisure space for pedestrians. STREET STYLE wr i te n by @ wi th p h ot o tak e n f r o m G o o g l e .c o m

It is actually still Asian Typical Style. When it comes to Asian Typical Style, mostly are feminine style, like mini skirts, bright colors, etc. In Korean street style, monochromatic dressing reigns supreme, but pops of color are encouraged. Shell-top Adidas are the It-Shoe. Layering becomes an art form of mixing different materials and textures. Inspiration seems to be drawn from around the world, from the flannel shirts and beanies of grunge to the denim overalls and Birkenstocks of normcore. But somehow, Koreans still always seem to be ahead of the curve. Here are some photos of Korean Street Style.

DO & DONTS Some Dos that you should do while you are in Seoul are When you go shopping in small counters or in the street, don’t forget to bargain, because like all the Asian people, the Koreans are also fond of bargaining. Therefore, the business people, give a higher price, expecting that you will ask for some discounts, later. You should also do learn about Korean, its people, its culture and its history as much as you can, before you actually go there. Because korean isnt a latin language you should learn a bit before you go there. In other hand, the Donts that you shouldnt do is don’t call a person over with your palm facing up because Koreans consider this a rude way to ask someone to come over. The reasoning behind why it’s rude seems to differ on who is asked, but the majority seem to answer that it is the way dogs and other animals are called. The next is when talking to other person, don’t point your finger or hand towards him or her; it is considered impolite. Another donts is don’t take a seat on the first half of the bus for the reason These special seats are designated for senior citizens, handicapped, and pregnant women. Elderly folk reign supreme in South Korea. It is a fact of life in the land of morning calm that all foreigners need to learn and accept no matter how difficult or unfair it may seem.

TIPS & TRICK There is a small trick if you want to travel from Seoul to Busan for free is The Visit Korea Committee offers free shuttle buses for those that want to see more than just Seoul. All it requires is a reservation 10 days in advance as well as a passport or alien registration card. And if you’re headed for Jeonju, we recommend booking a food tour with O’ngo Food Communications (aka Seouleats.com). This is also an

Goa Rangko Flores, Beauty in Disguise If you ever read my blog, you must have known about Goa Haji Mangku which have crystal clear water that I have visited before. And this time, I found the same kind of beauty hidden deep in the land of Flores. Goa Rangko itself is just found since about 4-5 months ago and it’s not a typical tourist destination. We all know that many amazing places in Indonesia which haven’t been touched and officially managed by government, like Goa Rangko. I’m actually in doubt to share about this place, it’s not that I’m being stingy, but I’m afraid that troops of people called “all-of-asudden-traveler” going there just to get good feeds for their instagram without preserving the nature.

When I went there yesterday, fortunately I found no waste in the cave. Everything seems clean though there might be a vandalism that wrote “akbar” on a stone. “Dear akbar, for God’s sake it’s not cool!”. The more people come, surely it will affect the cleanliness and clarity of water which happened to be the belle of this place. Imagine how stuffy it can be if it’s full of people or that bluish crystal clear water will turn cloudy because of many people swim there and hundreds of cigarette stub thrown away by irresponsible people. Pffttt.. over-exploitation is not good. Well, let’s talk about responsibility, as well as we hide something, it will eventually be discovered soon. The solution is to remind ourself and our friends to take care the nature so that the beauty remains. Please be a responsible traveler and leave only footprints ! Goa Rangko itself is located in Rangko Village, about 40 minutes from Labuan Bajo by motorcycle or car. Then we have to sail across the sea through the dock about 20 minutes to get to Goa Rangko. If we come around 09.00-10.00 am, we can see Gusung Island that appears in the middle of the sea, nevertheless after 11.00 am, this sand bar will slightly dissapear because of high tides. You should be careful when swimming in Goa Rangko, try to only swim at the bright area, because atmosphere at the other dark side of the cave is mystically different. It is said that there’s still carnivorous cave snake hiding behind stones that likes to eat fishes, crabs, and so on. Tremble my nerves a bit. HOW TO GET THERE - You can rent motorcycle with rider for around IDR 100.000-200.000 from Labuan Bajo, just ask the local. Try not to go on rainy season, because the road will be bumpy. - When arrive in Rangko Village, you should take the boat ride and cost around IDR 250.000 - 350.000/boat in return. - Once you arrive at the beach, you need to walk for 5 minutes to reach the cave. - There is no toilet to change your clothes after swimming, you need to ask to local people if you need it.

35

| Er ig o A p r il Ed ition

WHEN’S THE BEST TIME - The best time to get here is around 12.00 am - 02.00 pm, because at that time, the sunlight perfectly shines into the cave which makes the water looks even more crystal clear. PS : All pictures captured by Samsung NX30, this trip is sponsored by Samsung Indonesia for NX Trip Flores. Other pictures can be seen on instagram with hashtag #NXTripFlores Cheers, kadekarini
