a Little Golden Book
Manifesto For my book covers, I chose to re-design three books from the Little Golden Book series, as I grew up collecting them and enjoyed reading them throughout my childhood. The three books I chose were Peter Pan and Wendy, Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland. For my re-design I kept the classic gold spine as it is the trademark for the Little Golden Books. Also, if my books were to be printed they would be hard cover as the originals are. The books don’t have many pages so they need a hard cover to be sturdy.
colour pallet for this book. For the typography I went for a more blocky type as I thought it suited the story, although I added serifs and swirls to keep it looking friendly. The ‘and’ is smaller and a different font then the names as this capitalizes the names more. Surrounding the typography is small graphics relating to the story. The red feather on top of the P is from Peter Pan’s hat, with the silhouettes of Peter, Wendy, John and Michael flying at the bottom, and a red dotted line to tie everything together.
For each book I chose to sketch out my typography design and vectorise them. These are childrens books so I thought it would be best if they were bright and colourful, and bright colours are best to be done digitally to get the full effect. The back covers for each book are pretty simple to keep the attention on the front cover, they also feature colours that link to the front of the book.
SLEEPING BEAUTY Sleeping Beauty is a princess story, so I tried to keep it looking as princess-y as possible. For the colour pallet I went with pastel blue, pink, white and a hint of gold. The blue represents Aurora’s blue dress she wears, the pink as she is also seen in a pink dress, white to keep the white type trend going in the books and the hint of gold to compliment the gold spine. The typography is thin, with a delicate and detailed look to it. I also decided to exaggerate the typography with delicate swirls that branch off, I thought this would help with the princess vibe.
PETER PAN AND WENDY For Peter Pan and Wendy, I chose to use colours and graphics that relates to the storyline, as I also did for the other two books. Green, red and white is the main
Also, there’s Aurora’s tiara that acts as the dot on the I, which I thought was a nice touch. ALICE IN WONDERLAND Alice in Wonderland has a bit of a trippy vibe to the story, so I tried to make my typography the same. I originally thought it would be appropriate to make the main colours blue and white to link to Alice’s dress, however this would clash with the Sleeping Beauty book cover. So instead, I chose purples and pink, this relates more to the Cheshire cat. The typography is a bit more creative than the other two covers, with swirls and the letters interacting with eachother. I also added a few small graphics to help this cover link with the other covers. There is a pair of rabbit ears, ‘drink me’ and ‘eat me’ tags, playing cards, a clock that acts as the I’s dot and pink dotted lines at the end of each swirl to represent the Cheshire cat’s tail.
