Master Thesis in Architecture

Abstract Radical innovation, technological leaps and finding new modes of thinking is today common ambitions by

practitioners and academia in architecture. This endeavour is also incentivised by state funding and support. However, it is probably the building of everyday objects that has the most impact on people’s daily lives. This conflict was the starting point of the thesis, and the aim is to expand the discourse on designing sustainable buildings. The first part of the thesis contains the theoretical framework. A connection is made between our accelerating culture, late capitalism and the ideology of innovation. As an alternative, a case is made for a rooted architecture that strives for continuity. But building for a long life brings an interesting paradox: the most certain part of a building’s life is the constant change. Therefore, different kinds of longevity needs to be addressed, from both cultural and technical aspects. This part of the thesis ends with seven criteria for a maintainable building: 1. Continuity, 2. Roughness, 3. Restrained weathering, 4. Soft joinery, 5. Small modules, 6. Forgiving detailing, and 7. General spaces. The second part of the thesis tries these principles out in a proof-of-concept building. It is located in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the site of a parking garage from 1972. The program accepts commercial spaces on first and second floor with residential units on top. The surroundings are characterised by notable brick buildings from the early 20th century and the project attempts a continuation of the load bearing brick building tradition through a revival of the diaphragm wall. It is necessary to phrase and think about long term implications of the built environment. Today we praise the innovators as the heroes of society and our hope for the future. But is it not the ability to persist in the long run that makes a society sustainable? Exploring an architectural culture of maintenance, or long-term-ness, is an important part of the thesis.

Venice, Nostalgia and infrastructure

First semester of LABA studio dealt with the territorial scale. Urban design from regional scale to city scale. The projects turned into a book, Venice Lessions. Our project was for a light rail line across the lagoona.

Regenerative baths in the venetian arsenale

Venice is an enclave. You travel to it on singular lines by train or boat, and arrive into a new setting. The Venetian Arsenale can be described as an enclave within this enclave. Once it was the industrial powerhouse of the Venetian Republic, with warships turned out by the week. The mighty wall surrounding it has a clear boundary, with distinct openings, gates and portholes. The outset of this project is this. Venice as urbis stays as an island in form, and makes use of that uniqueness. It is a social machine that works differently than other cities. It is under a crisis, a slow one, not of drowning or erosion, but one of stagnancy and dangerous monofunctionalism. If Venice is a destination, then so should the Arsenale be. The workshops here were built with the mightiest spans in wood the 14th century technology could master – the enclosing building limited the size of the ships that could be produced, and bigger meant better. These platforms can now be reused for programs of considerable size. Regenerative Baths in the Venetian Arsenale

Due to its lack of space, and overly touristic program, Venice has a very low proportion of daily recreation. Today, it has two public swimming pools. One is in Sant’Alvise, in the north-west part of Venice, and one in western Giudecca. This means an inhabitant of Castello, the most residential part of today’s Venice, needs to travel to the opposite corners of this formerly isotropic city to access them. Therefore a public bath house is here proposed. To act as a service to the Arsenale and its largely white collar workforce, the project will also contain a cafeteria. The slabs stops some distance from the western façade and turns the interior space into a public thoroughfare, with an opening towards the lagoon as attractor. Venice 1:30000

An agroecological campus for Korsberga. Abstract Today, many of our agricultural practices are unsustainable. We exhaust the soil, we loose diversity through the

use of mono-cropping and we introduce novel chemicals into our nature. These practices are often maintained by the argument that it is the only rational way to produce food for our ever growing population. This project tries to challenge this position. It is done via a proof of concept farm, proposed to be an agricultural campus. It is a space for both learning and farming, but the practices are general and can be applicable in all farming. The project bridges landscape and building design territory and tries to find principles applicable to both. This project is divided into two parts. (I) First a theoretical one, where terms and definitions are explained and the academical framework is set. It looks at the problems facing agriculture today and establishes a main vision for the project, which is to scale up agroecology. It also provides some suggested solutions to the problems, including no-till and intercropping practices. It also looks at parcelling of agricultural fields and proposes a set of morphological principles on how to in the future shape the landscape. (II) Secondly the Agricultural campus is presented. The program is argued for and defined in a technical and spatial way. An argument is made on why rural buildings and farm buildings especially can be used as a reference for many different projects. After that, the different qualities of the building is further presented in plan, section and detail. Material qualities are presented in rendered perspectives.

Bachelor Thesis. Underground train station for Korsvägen, Gothenburg

The Västlänken project is designed to solve a regional and national problem of transportation. I started my project with the ambition to look at what added qualities it could give the urban landscape and it’s citizens. To give these public places a character, I chose to work with the station as a profane version of religious space. The large scale infrastructure projects of today are huge investments from society which will be active for a long time, and these monumental aesthetics are there to remind us of our place in time and culture. After sketching by physical model and figuring out that I could have changes in structure to correspond to changes in flows of people and of program, I worked with Rhino and Grasshopper to create a script which connected a series of dots with arches. In the end, the project explores and looks at one way to create public space that is poetic and calm in the demanding and very technical context of an underground station.

The proposed structure sits in the middle of an urban leftover: a part of a city block that was torn down and left as parking space. It has no program, nor description. It is an unknown. Two paths converge into one chamber, and the gaze is eventually drawn upwards, where nature announces its presence.

It is made from the material of the forest, but it is not the forest, it is an artifact. The technique is borrowed from traditional boatbuilding, where planks overlap and join together to make the structure rigid. The ancient qualities of nature is reduced into notions such as ecosystem services. So what does one search for when traversing the forest? More important than mushrooms, berries and all the produce it has to offer is the emotional experience, the feeling of unknowing.

Today we spend most of our time in cities. We are born, raised, live, work and will eventually die in urban environments. The natural environment and our fundamental dependency on it is something understood abstractly, in graphs and statistics. It has been disenchanted and incorporated into the modernist framework.
