THE PACKARD HOTEL
HAVANA, CUBA
THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF PRESERVING THE PAST
To revive the spirit of old Havana while being cognizant of realities that formed its image. The project was to design a 180 room hotel following Havana’s preservation codes and the international building code addressing the remains of the old Packard Hotel: the north facade, small loggia and townhomes. The final design implemented 196 hotel rooms including housing for staff, artist studios, cabaret and roof top bar and pool.

RIO APARTMENTS
Rio apartments are inspired by the Miami lifestyle, embracing the rich culture and outdoor interaction with the water. Removing the concrete slabs that currently reside throughout the site, and dividing the site into two zones; the marina and the residence. Creating a thoroughfare along the water to collaborate the simplicity of the marina and four white resident towers, allowing the new vibrant green landscape to prevail the new skyline of the site. Inviting a new independent community, and providing the convenience to the water in a spacious, open, and safe atmosphere.

CARAVAGGIO CULTURE CENTER
ROME, ITALY
To design a culture center dedicated to the works of Caravaggio in the Piazza della Rondinella in Campo Marzio in the heart of the city in Rome, Italy. Placing the building adjacent to the church of San Salvatore allows new views of the church at different points. Designing the buildings program based on natural light to reflect the works of Caravaggio, and using brick and travertine matching the surrounding buildings allows the center to complement the area while standing on its own.

The Sutro Baths burned down in 1966, but the ruins still remain in San Francisco, California. The objective was to design a wellness center with the decision to preserve the remains or build over them. The 200 sq. acres flourishes with natural landscape and terrain. The design was to enhance the remains with a natural swimming pool and building the wellness center in the terrain giving the spaces spectacular views of the bay.

FURNITURE SHOWROOM
The purpose of the project was to design a showroom in the Historic District of Providence, Rhode Island using energy efficient methods. The project specification requirements were that of zoning codes and program size including; mechanical rooms, offices, storage, restrooms and 16,000 sq. ft. of showroom space. We used various programs to study the energy efficiency of the site and building throughout the project. Furniture sets the tone for a space, a temporary layout that directs movement and mass. Anchoring the showroom with a design of fluidity and continuous flow from space to space, elevating the comfort, design, and balance of unique metal and natural features of furniture. Unifying the roots (floor, walls, ceiling), branches (use, design, energy), and leaves (furniture, design details). Using natural systems such as geothermal and solar designed as an off grid / zero net energy design.

NANTAHALA OUTDOOR CENTER
Originally designed in 1972, the Nantahala Outdoor Center flourishes during the summer with thousands of tourists between all ages. The objective of the project was to redesign the site plan and main boathouse to fit the needs of the program today. With the incorporation of more lodging, parking, retail space, storage and administrative space. The project builds upon the topographic form of the site and allows the river to formally shape the home campus. Many of the planned structures conform to the hillside such as the Amphitheater, Hotel, Cabins and Boathouse by moving the terrain and even exaggerating it to experience the mountain and water from different heights.

BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA
EMERGENCY RELEIF HOUSING FOR A CARRIBEEAN TOWN
The objective of this project was to design emergency relief housing for the Los Flores neighborhood in Barranquilla, Colombia. The program was designed within a recycled shipping container, which had to be elevated due to severe flooding in the area. The neighborhoods were visited to understand the poverty levels, local aesthetics and culture. We also toured Technoglass’s window and aluminum factories, and the shipping port to understand the strength and size of the shipping container. The design combines vernacular principles for low cost and efficient purposes. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT
