REFLECTION
Acoustics- A Co-working office is a place dedicated to productivity and collaboration. It is imperative to have a comfortable acoustic environment that is designed for focus oriented tasks, which involves managing noise from building mechanics, background noise and white noise. To overcome these acoustical challenges, I have utilized acoustical panels and baffles to the walls and ceiling planes of the conference room and private offices as a means of sound absorption. In open the open area work stations I’ve used a white felt application to the ceiling detail that is hidden on the upper-side of the triangular panels. This is an effective solution, and it aesthetically pleasing. From a design perspective, I’ve chosen materials that will absorb sounds, like carpeting in the and soft seating so that the fabric absorbs sounds. Accessibility & ergonomics: This is a shared space, with constantly renewed clients. There is no way of telling who will be using the space and what their abilities are. Therefore, Ive designed the Communitech offices under the principles of universal design to ensure a flexible space that can be used to its fullest extent by the widest range of people. All the corridors within the space have been designed to a minimum of 5 feet in width to accommodate wheelchair access. Ology height adjustable desks by Steelcase have been combined with upstage desking systems by Teknion making all the workstations accessible for a wheelchair or scooter to use. The dark floor material contrasts with the white wall finish to show a clear path to any user that may have visual impairments. Zoning: In any office it is critical to have designated task areas that promote a specific work behavior. In Communitech I’ve categorizes the programme into three different zones; social creative and designated work. I’ve arranged the office such that social areas are separated from focus areas to control the acoustics of the spaces and minimize distractions. To counter act this I’ve arranged small breakout spaces within focus areas to allow for employees to take a step away from their desk. Creative, collaborative areas have been oriented closer to social zones to promote a positive and productive work behavior.
