Concept Statement

An open, peaceful living environment for aging and less able-bodied adults is needed, especially for those that are a part of a community that requires a sense of security and acceptance. The design for Out in the Open LGBT Assisted Living will therefore be based on the concept of stability. Flat, horizontal lines and planes as well as a connection to nature will be used to give a strong impression of this idea for residence. The main visual elements will be horizontal lines and planes visible in the millwork, wayfinding, and layout of the overall space. The repetition of this, combined with thick walls throughout the space, will give an impression of unity and strength. Nature will be incorporated as a focal point in many areas as well, especially as many residence become less able to venture outside of the facility. This will be accommodated with the use of natural light and outdoor elements made for indoor use- tall windows stretching from wall-towall and glass accordion doors will look onto the patio; a skylight will highlight an indoor pond and garden; and a small garden by the quiet areas will remind residence of a backyard or secluded space they would like to spend their time in. The goal of Out in the Open LGBT Assisted Living is to not only provide a warm environment from within, but to connect to the LGBT community from beyond the walls of the facility. Self-expression and individuality should be promoted in a safe space, and LGBT art will be featured in common areas to keep a strong connection and sense of belonging to a supportive community.
