Our concept is based on scents that provoke a happy memory from the past. We see our product being sold as a gift with an element of personalization, taking inspiration from capturing a message in a bottle. For example we would target a mother sending her daughter to university with a gift that creates an emotional connection with a memory from home.

The form of our product will be a room diffuser; this will serve as a constant reminder to the happy memories alongside making an attractive room decoration. An example of a memory trigging scent we want to produce would be ‘Grandma’s house’. This will be the typical smell of log burners, Sunday roasts and apple pies.

For our product, we believe that there will be two types of consumers seeing as it is more likely to be bought as a gift for someone. This means that it will need to appeal to both the buyer (parent/mother) and the user (child/student). All university students create a homely atmosphere to their room in their own personal way, therefore we intend to play on the emotional connection/bond between a mother and daughter and the feelings associated with a child leaving home to start their new beginning in a new place. We need to ensure that we’re appealing to the uni student through the scent and packaging of the fragrance, but also with the ‘memory’ being the connecting factor that unites both consumers.

We believe that our main competitors are ‘I hate perfume’ and ‘the library of fragrance’. Both of these brands create perfumes with very unique and specific smells and are based in New York. ‘The library of fragrance’ bases their scents on unusual objects, such as ‘play-doh’. We want to differ our product and take this further by branching into the European market with a home fragrance that creates an atmosphere based on location.

The idea for our bottle has developed from the well-known theme of a message in a bottle. As our concept is so unique, we want our bottle and packaging to reflect this through factors such as texture, to create a shabby chic style.

Alongside our bottle, in order to make our product unique we want to add a personalized element by providing the buyer with a note to express their message or emotions e.g. ‘good luck at university’ to place inside the bottle. We want our bottle to be transparent glass so the message can be clearly seen. The message will be held up by a piece of string where the color can be altered depending on the fragrance also. The copy style we wish to incorporate will be typewriter, as we want it to compliment our neutral color pallet and incorporate our personalization aspects into the overall design of our product.
